BREMERTON — Third-degree assault charges against a 32-year-old man are pending in connection with the Motel 6 explosion Aug. 18, 2015. That day around 7:54 p.m., Cencom, the emergency dispatch services, received a call advising of a gas leak at the motel. “The manager of the motel, Tonya Hinds, reported there was a broken main outside and gas was blowing everywhere,” wrote Officer Jordan Ejde in the report. “Another caller advised someone had busted it and was leaving

in an old white GMC pickup truck.” Ejde said that he arrived on the scene and did not see a pickup truck, but blocked off the roadway near 11th Street and Adele Avenue, then contacted the firefighters already on the scene. The firefighters informed him that there was a serious leak on the main gas line, and that the motel was being evacuated. “I was approximately 50 feet away from the leak when I observed the easternmost end of Motel 6 ignite into a fiery explosion,” Ejde wrote. “I can’t remember if I was pushed or dived to SEE MOTEL EXPLOSION, A6

Library and Central Stage Theatre team up for building projects BY CHRIS TUCKER CTUCKER@CENTRALKITSAPREPORTER.COM

SILVERDALE — A new $4.5 million community theater could be built by 2018 just north of where the new Silverdale library is planned to be built near Bucklin Hill Bridge. Kitsap Regional Library and Cen-

tral Stage Theatre of County Kitsap announced last month that they would enter a formal partnership for a development plan at the corner of Bucklin Bridge Road and Blaine Avenue. KRL Director Jill Jean was excited about the collaboration. “I don’t often engage in hyperbole, and I don’t know if I believe in cosmic

forces, but I totally believe that sometimes the stars do align and bring people together … to create extraordinary projects,” Jean said. CSTOCK approached the library with the idea about two years ago. The groups realized not only did they like one another, but that they had similar goals.

“There is an energy to this partnership that we think is very special and unique,” Jean said. The groups planned to meet in January to formalize a memorandum of understanding. The library hopes to build a SEE LIBRARY CSTOCK, A6

4-H told to leave Kitsap County Fairgrounds Both parties working toward formal agreement to resume partnership BY MICHELLE BEAHM MBEAHM@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

BREMERTON — The archery club had to take an unscheduled break after the 4-H program was asked to leave the Kitsap County Fairgrounds at the start of 2016. “4-H has had a presence at the fairgrounds a number of years without charge,” said county administrator Karen Goon.

The program, a part of Washington State University Extension’s youth and family program unit, has been partnering with Kitsap County for years. “We kind of got to a point where we needed to do a formal agreement to deal with issues that might arise,” Goon said. “We wanted to have an agreement between WSU and the county that talked about how we would handle claims and indemnification.” Indemnification is a clause identifying which party is liable for injuries, loss or damages. Doreen Hauser-Lindstrom, WSU’s youth and family program director, said, “It really looks at making sure that all youth and volunteers and adults that work with the 4-H and youth development program are safe, and also

that the county is safe, and WSU. “The lawyers are busy working, trying to come to an agreement about the indemnification issue,” she added. Goon said that partially due to holiday vacations, the groups “weren’t able to pull it together before the first of the year.” “I am confident that we’ll be able to work through and resolve the issue so that our 4-H youth can be active on the Kitsap County Fairgrounds,” said Hauser-Lindstrom. She added that the lawyers have been in discussions since December 2015, and she doesn’t know when an agreement might be reached. “We definitely want the best for both parties, and it’s a partnership,” she said. “Extension is a

Bremerton man charged with murder BY CHRIS TUCKER CTUCKER@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

BREMERTON — There will be no happy new year for a Bremerton man who now faces first-degree murder charges related to the case of a missing Tracyton-area man. Robert Lee “Bubba” Pry, 29, of Bremerton, had been earlier charged with robbery in the first degree, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm. The Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney added murder charges Dec. 31. Pry’s total bail is now $1.1 million. Pry also is being held on a no-bail charge of escape from community custody. Pry is connected to the ongoing case of the robbery of

had a “no trespassing” sign as well as a sign indicating the road was monitored by video cameras. Hood is missing and was last seen by his caretaker at his residence Dec. 16. Pry denied any involvement in the robbery but told investigators he did use a phone in an attempt to access Hood’s bank account. Pry’s girlfriend, Ocean Aarib Wilson, 19, of Federal Way, was charged with rendering criminal assistance in the first degree and contempt of court. Her bail was set at $50,000. Wilson told investigators that Pry and another man went to Hood’s home on Dec. 17, knocked Hood out, tied Hood up and burglarized his home. The men told Wilson that Hood was still breathing when they left him. Hood’s check books, financial documents, wallet, some cash and several rifles were

missing from the home. KCSO arrested Pry and other people at a Tracyton Boulevard residence Dec. 22. Hood’s checks, financial papers and several firearms were found at the location. Others who were charged in the case include: Alisha Gail Small, 33, of Bremerton, was charged with possessing stolen property in the second degree, with $5,000 bail. Joshua Owen Rodgers Jones, 26, was booked on robbery in the first degree, with $1 million bail. Miranda Elizabeth Bond, 25, was booked on suspicion of rendering criminal assistance, with $100,000 bail. Bond also was booked on an outstanding warrant for escape from community custody. Robert Lavalle Davis, 47, of East Bremerton, was charged with robbery in the first degree and rendering criminal assistance in the first degree. Total bail was set at $500,000. Davis

We’re all working to make sure that we can move forward.” “I’m hoping we can wrap this up pretty quickly,” Goon said. “I know everyone is invested in having them back and doing their activities there.” This allegedly started in March of 2015, when the county requested a formal lease outlining legal and liability issues. In November, the county allegedly contacted the program again, saying if a formal agreement was not reached by the end of the year, the 4-H program would need to vacate the fairgrounds.

Body found near Belfair Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office detectives discovered the body of an unidentified elderly person inside a container in the back yard of a residence in the 300 block of NE Santa Maria Lane, south of Belfair Dec. 30. The container was turned over to the Kitsap County coroner and transported to the Kitsap County Morgue, KCSO Deputy Scott Wilson said. Wilson said the coroner would open the container, remove the body and process it for evidence. The gender and identity of the person will also be determined. The body is believed by sheriff ’s investigators to be connected to the missing man case. Confirmation and public release of the identity of the remains is on hold, pending family notification.

Cruz arrested in South Kitsap The sixth person connected to the case, Arnold Mafnas Cruz, surrendered to deputies Jan. 1. Cruz had a warrant on a charge of rendering criminal assistance in the first degree, with bail set at $500,000. According to a Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office statement, Cruz, 47, spoke with an employee at a business in the 6700 block of Bethel Road SE, south of Port Orchard, at 3:50 a.m. and requested that the employe call 911. Cruz then identified himself and told the employee that he was wanted by law enforcement and that he wished to voluntarily surrender. Deputies conducted a tactical approach to the business and took custody of Cruz without incident around 4:15 a.m. Cruz was unarmed. He was taken to Kitsap County Jail and booked for rendering criminal assistance in the first degree. No other suspects are wanted by investigators.

Burning smell brings firefighters to cooler A burning smell from a partially melted plastic cooler that had been left next to a heater caught the attention of Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue firefighters during a morning medical call Dec. 30. Firefighters from CKFR Station 41 were leaving a medical call at a private residence when they smelled something burning. They discovered the homeowner had two plastic coolers stored just inches from a wall heater. The back side of one of the coolers had begun to melt as a result. The coolers were moved and the occupant was advised. CKFR has a few cold weather safety tips: n Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, such as the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater. n Have a three-foot “kid-free

zone” around open fires and space heaters. n Never use an oven to heat a home. n Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. n Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. n Always use the right kind of fuel, as specified by the manufacturer, for fuel-burning space heaters. n Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from the home. n Test smoke alarms monthly. — Edited by Chris Tucker

Reversing the loss of State Patrol troopers That the Washington State Patrol was losing officers to better-paying jobs with police and sheriff departments across the state has become clear in recent years. The State Patrol is authorized for 690 trooper positions, but currently only 580 are filled. And the drain of troopers, with ranks thinning more quickly than the patrol can add new hires, could reduce it to a force of as few as 250 by 2026 if current trends were to continue. But trooper pay isn’t the only factor, according to a recently released study prepared for legislators that surveyed and interviewed current and former troopers and analyzed other data. “There is no one fix. You cannot pay your way out of it,” former Sacramento police chief Rick Braziel, a member of the team preparing the study, said. The report found that while better pay elsewhere was an incentive to leave, it was dissatisfaction among troopers with their workload, working conditions and with the agency’s management that was prompting troopers to look elsewhere in the first place. While 90 percent of current troopers surveyed reported dissatisfaction with their pay and benefits, 90 percent were also unhappy with management. Among current troopers, 64 percent said they would not encourage anyone to join the State Patrol, and 79 percent of former troopers in the survey also would advise against working for the agency. The report found a range of reasons for troopers’ on-the-job displeasure, among them: Management that is more concerned with the number of citations rather than on outcomes, such as fewer traffic deaths; A lack of communication between troopers in the field and their leadership; An increased workload because of the unfilled positions; A shift rotation that requires troopers, regardless of seniority, to work 56 days on the day shift, then 56 days on the night shift; and Out-of-date and uncomfortable uniforms, made of wool and last redesigned more than 50 years ago. The report shows where work is needed and who’s responsible for taking the lead. While few express dissatisfaction with State Patrol Chief John Batiste, the report is clear that patrol leadership should evaluate its own performance, shift its focus to outcomes rather than numbers and identify changes in management and working conditions that will improve its standing with its troopers and those looking to join its ranks.

Why we still love snow Until I moved to Maine in 2008, when I was 31-years old, I had never seen more than a few inches of snow, and then, only when on vacation. I had a lot to learn, like: Why would anyone rake anything off their roof (“It looks so pretty with snow on it!”), and why don’t people in the North use ice in their drinks (they just put the glass of soda in the snow for a few minutes)? But the biggest thing I had to learn was that for people who deal with winter — and in particular, snow — on a yearly basis, the weather is something like a competitor. And it’s a worthy one at that. “It’s coming,” my new neighbors told me that September, when the temperature dropped and we still hadn’t unpacked our moving boxes. “What’s coming?” “When the leaves all fall off the trees,” one of them said, “you’ll know. It’s out there.” I was terrified. I grew up, and still frequent, a part of the country where Man has largely dominated nature. In the heart of Washington, D.C., for instance, everything that your eye can behold was made by Man. The buildings, the monuments, the sidewalks, the Metro and even the Mall, with its cherry trees, were all built, planted or planned by men. And outside of a few minor earthquakes and hurricanes that have usually petered out by the time they get that far inland, Man keeps nature at bay. The rare “snowpocalypse” that Mother Nature throws in for fun, and

Navy Wise

Sarah Smiley which temporarily shuts down the city, is an anomaly; something to scratch your head at and then carry on as soon as the millions of cars heat up the roadways. It’s easy to understand why humans in D.C. walk so briskly and confidently. They are the ruling class there. And so one of the first things I noticed in Maine was the respect, bordering on amused fear, that people have for the weather. After all these hundreds of years, Man is still fighting the elements up here. And for me, that’s what made me fall in love with the North. The process is truly fascinating. Just like my neighbor said, when the leaves all drop, you know it’s time. Mother Nature is about to release her dogs in the form of bitter cold and piles of snow. And we humans have not yet really figured out how to manage that. We go out each morning with our plastic shovels and four-wheel drive and

think we are at least winning a battle, even as we know we will surely lose the war. Winter, it seems, is the sibling we playfully (or not) battle each holiday, but we still hope he will return for another round next year. Which is why everyone seemed to be losing their mind when winter made its presence a little later than normal this year. “Christmas with green grass?” we asked. “Is that all you’ve got, Winter?” Walking without ice grippers on our shoes in late-December? And I thought I knew you, Winter. We were like the dog who gets a little anxious and naughty when he thinks he has the run of the house. Because, honestly, he likes a little authority and control. I mean, he doesn’t know how you’re bringing home that kibble each night, right? He needs you! And we needed winter. We were alone in the mansion and our reflector poles along the driveway seemed to be mocking us. The salt waiting in the garage just seemed a little sad. And we put on our coats, dressing for the fight. But our opponent never showed. You see, when you live in a place like Washington, D.C., you can believe Man is invincible. There is nothing that a little asphalt and electricity can’t take care of to keep Man’s world going. Even in winter. But in Maine, we — okay, maybe it’s just me — relish the yearly reminder that we may inhabit this world, but we SEE SMILEY SNOW, A4

ingly innocuous routine and steal a car. The only effort expended is to cruise through neighborhoods and look for vehicles with engines running and with no one behind the wheel. Within a matter of seconds the thief can drive the car away, with no forced entry, hotwiring or carjacking required. These types of thefts typically take place in residential areas along the curbs, or even in the owner’s driveway. Thieves also are known to watch convenience stores and wait for a driver to leave a car running for a moment. The solution to this problem is obvious: Don’t provide criminals with an easy opportunity to steal a vehicle. The best course of action is to bundle up and remain with the vehicle while it warms up, or to at least lock the idling vehicle using the valet key or remote start. — Edited by Chris Tucker

SILVERDALE — The Silverdale Community Center may have closed its doors to the public, but the building provided one more service before its demolition in February: Central Kitsap Firefighters used the structure this week to conduct training on air management during a simulated structure fire. Built in 1958, the Silverdale Billie Eder Community Center has significant water damage and its poor condition has made it a liability risk. It is estimated that it would cost more than $700,000 to repair the building. It is located at 9729 Silverdale Way NW. During the exercise, firefighters focused on monitoring their air supply and knowing when to exit a structure with enough air left in their pack for them to get out safely.

CKFR welcomed the opportunity to work in a location other than the training tower at the Kitsap Readiness Center, or at CKFRs Station 41. While the towers are important, they have a somewhat sterile environment. But a structure like the community center provided more of a “real-life” scenario with a complicated layout. While there was no “live fire” during the training, structure fire conditions were simulated. “Firefighters will work on moving hose and keeping themselves oriented while tracking their air supply and planning their safe exit,” said Brett Twomey, chief of training and safety for CKFR. CKFR would like to thank the County Parks Department for allowing access to building.

Sections of Clear Creek Trail to be closed SILVERDALE – Two or three sections of the Clear Creek Trail will be closed in the spring of 2016. Floodplain restoration will begin in April and close the southern section from the barricades on Schold Road to Highway 303. The twin culverts on the bike trail south past Ellie the Elephant and Geri the Giraffe to Silverdale Way will also be closed. The other trail closure will be for the Duwe’ic Treatment Wetland project, also around April. The section that will be closed will be on the west side of the creek from Ridgetop Boulevard to the pedestrian bridge. The east side trail will not be affected by this. Both of these projects are on county property and are made possible by tax dollars paid to Kitsap County Surface and Stormwater Management and via grants. The third possible closure is the hospital trail. Harrison Medical Center is expanding in Silverdale and has allowed the Clear Creek Trail to build on their property. Adjustments will have to be made to accommodate new buildings.

Coroner’s Office receives accreditation KITSAP – The International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners recently announced that the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office has received accreditation by the association. The Kitsap County Coroner’s Office self submitted to this process for the purpose of ensuring the operating policies, procedures and practices are within international guidelines. The Kitsap County Coroner’s Office was subjected to review of 130 standards including administrative, forensic, investigative and facility review. The IAC&ME requires 100 percent compliance of mandatory standards and 90 percent of all applicable standards. “When an agency elects to subject themselves to this process it clearly indicates their desire to stand to peer review and demonstrates to the public and stakeholders a strong desire to provide excellence in service provision,” according to a spokesperson from IAC&ME. “We are very excited and proud to have met this goal,” said Tony Stewart, chief deputy coroner. “Throughout the process we discovered that we have been

doing most things the right way all along. The accreditation affirms this and presented some opportunities to incorporate additional best management practices in our operation,” Stewart said. “The process involved many hours ensuring our policies were up-to-date. It also allowed us to implement new training and procedures to improve the performance of our operations,” said County Coroner Greg Sandstrom. “Through the work of all our staff, and Tony’s diligence, we were able to meet these standard in only five months.” Kitsap County is one of only 26 counties nationwide to obtain this accreditation.

the ground. I remember feeling small pieces of debris hitting me in the back as I went to the ground. “I scrambled along the ground into a yard to get further away from the blast. I looked back and observed the easternmost section of the Motel had been destroyed in the explosion. Debris was scattered everywhere and smoke was billowing in the air.” Ejde said he couldn’t see the gas company employee or the firefighters, and he didn’t remember a bang when the explosion occurred. “In hindsight I realized I was dazed by the explosion,” Ejde wrote. The Bremerton Police Department released a certificate of probable cause on Jan. 6 with the results of an investigation and a recommendation that the class C felony charges be placed. According to the report, the man allegedly responsible for the leak was helping his daughter climb out a window of the Motel 6 and get over a fence while standing on the gas

meter, which broke under his weight. The man’s juvenile daughter is identified by the initial ”F.” in the report. According to Detective Crystal Gray, the man “wanted to talk about what occurred at Motel 6” after being read his Miranda Rights. “(He) stated his 17-year-old daughter F. told him about one month ago that she was pregnant,” Gray wrote. The reason they were at the motel was because after F. told her mother that she was pregnant after being raped in California, her mother “was extremely angry and argued with F. and slapped her and told her to get out of the house.” The man said he’d been in prison at the time of the rape and “was not there for her,” so he “stated that this time, he was going to be there for her and help her through this.” After being kicked out, F. went with her father to stay in the Motel 6 to “let her mom calm down.” However, according to the report, her mom kept calling to find her daughter, leading the man to help his daughter

10,000-square-foot new library with 40 parking spaces. The library did a feasibility study to see how the $7 million library might be funded. CSTO CK President Brandon Myers said it made sense for CSTOCK to partner with the library. Myers said Silverdale had an “identity crisis.” “Growing up here, I always thought the heart of Silverdale was the mall,” but he wanted to bring culture and the arts front-and-center. The Silverdale Community Center, which has been CSTOCK’s home until recently, has been deemed unsafe and will be torn down by February. CSTOCK is now operating out of Central Kitsap Middle School. Myers said he’d like to ensure that CSTOCK finds a permanent home and expands on what the group has been doing for the past 30 years. A sustainable business model was also needed, he said. Myers envisioned a 200-seat theater with classroom space, a commercial kitchen and parking. Myers said it could cost $800,000 for the land for the theater, plus $3.3 million for construction and $400,000 for development. That would bring total theater costs to $4.5 million. They hope to have the building constructed by 2018. CSTOCK has raised $283,000 so far.

began efforts to resuscitate the driver and were able to detect a heartbeat. The woman was transported to Harrison Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

“In April of this past year, we’ve had very positive results shared with our board of trustees and we were able to move forward to put money down on the property,” Jean said. During the “quiet phase” of their capital campaign, the library spoke with a person with ties to the art community on Bainbridge Island. “We wanted to talk about the possibility of art in a new Silverdale library. And the person we spoke to was so interested in the project that they said, ‘Come back with a proposal. I am interested in more than just the art. I want to talk to you about the whole project.’ ” “Needless to say, we were very excited about this. Especially for what I believe is a historic gesture: To have someone from Bainbridge Island support a project that is entirely outside of that area. “This project truly resonated with this donor.” Jean said that on Nov. 25, the library was able to take possession of the new property. KRL plans to sell the current Silverdale library building eventually. “This has been 40 years in the making ... but we are feeling truly pleased with where we are at.” KRL Foundation Director Jaime Forsyth was also pleased with plans for what she called a “wonderful,

“I was approximately 50 feet away from the leak when I observed the easternmost end of Motel 6 ignite into a fiery explosion ... I can’t remember if I was pushed or dived to the ground. I remember feeling small pieces of debris hitting me in the back as I went to the ground.” – Bremerton Police Officer Jordan Edje get out through a window. “I advised (him) that we saw his daughter being helped by two subjects to get out the window on security video at Motel 6,” Gray wrote. “I asked (him) who owns a white Suburban. (He) stated he did.” He said he parked the Suburban at the Shur-Kleen Carwash on the nearby corner of Wilbert and 11th. “(He) stated he was the one who helped F. down from the window,” Gray continued. “(He) stated F. was hanging from the air conditioner and he got up onto a gray box, which was the gas meter. (He) stated he did not know what it was.” According to the man, F. never

stepped on or touched the gas meter, though he did hold her while helping her get down and then over the fence. He said his friend, the second subject seen helping F. through the window, merely caught F.’s bag and then went to the Suburban. After they exited the motel, the man said he noticed nearby neighbors watching them. “As they ran by, he heard a hissing-type noise kind of like a tire going flat,” Gray wrote. “He thought it was the neighbors going ‘Psst,’ but did not pay attention.” Gray said the investigation showed that the man caused the pipe to break due to him standing on the gas meter,

which was placed in a location to prevent people from standing on it. “(He) was aware that the pipe broke and took no steps to notify anyone,” Gray wrote. “Due to (his) negligence, this led to the gas company employee, firefighters and police officers to be in the ‘blast zone’ during the explosion, causing injuries.” Larry Jennings, with the gas company, was one of the people injured in the explosion. Ejde wrote in his report that Jennings was trapped under the debris by the explosion and covered in severe burns. According to Gray’s report, he was taken to the ICU Burn Center at Harborview Medical Center, and was “constantly treated throughout the night,” according to Detective Beau Ayers’ statement. “He came close to death several times, but was able to pull through,” Ayers wrote. “Jennings is expected to recover, but has a long and difficult road with many hurdles yet to overcome prior to his recovery.” — Editor’s note: The name of the man is being withheld until charges are filed.

A conceptual floor plan for a new Silverdale library shows a community room, adult and childrens book collections, a lobby, a program area, a maker space, computer space, a study room and staff area. iconic library” in the center of Silverdale. Forsyth said the project resonated with people. It could have high ceilings, lots of light, meeting space and “maker spaces” where people could create things instead of only consuming information. “Everybody knows Silverdale is this vital, thriving, expanding center of retail. But yet, there isn’t that place that’s the iconic community place. A lot of people look at libraries as representing a community’s investment in itself. Right now, the (current library) building in Silverdale does not match the thriving vitality of the rest of the community.” Forsyth said such a library is part of what attracts families to an area. Early plans for the library called for a small coffee shop to be inside, but Forsyth said that was no longer likely. “We realized that the community needs more meeting space more than it needs coffee. Well, some people might argue,” she said. There are other coffee shops in the surrounding area.

or many peoples, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream is still alive. And his leadership of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s continues to inspire movements around the world. Living Voices touring company will perform “The Right to Dream” in honor of the Rev. Dr. King, 11 a.m. Jan. 13 at the Naval Undersea Museum. This is the 23rd year the Naval Undersea Warfare Center

(NUWC) Keyport’s Black Employment Program has hosted this event. Capt. Francis Spencer, commanding officer of NUWC Keyport, will be the master of ceremonies. The performance recreates a student’s coming of age during the civil rights movement spurred by Dr. King in the 1960s, and features a single actor interfacing with slides and recorded narration. The ceremony is open to the public and does not require base

access. NUWC Keyport has provided technical capabilities that support America’s dominance in the undersea domain for more than 100 years. The joys of winter bird watching in Kitsap W

hen the weather outside is frightful, winter bird watching can be delightful. Our tidal estuaries, sheltered inlets and seedfilled feeders are irresistible to many species of wintering birds. It’s a special time for avid birdwatchers, when our waterways bustle with birds from the frozen Arctic and boreal forests of the far north. It’s also a special time for those with well-tended backyard feeders. Even in their subdued winter hues these fleeting bursts of life make colorful and fascinating neighbors.

KITSAP BIRDING

Look for a Townsend’s Warbler at your backyard feeder.

By GENE BULLOCK

Bird watching is one of America’s fastest growing hobbies. According to National Audubon, some 47 million U.S. bird watchers spend $40 billion a year on bird watching. In Washington State alone, wildlife viewing and photography add more than $7 billion a year to State and local economies. Audubon encourages backyard bird feeding, but there are risks involved (dependency is not one of them). One of the major

Don Willott / Courtesy

risks is that bird feeders encourage birds to crowd together and spread diseases. If feeders are not kept clean, seed can

become contaminated with Salmonella. The first indication may be sick and dying birds. When that happens, feeders should

be thoroughly cleaned and taken down for a week or two until sick birds stop coming back and re-infecting feeder surfaces. After washing surfaces with soap and water, they can be sanitized with a 10 percent bleach solution and then rinsed and dried. Audubon encourages responsible bird feeding because it’s a great way to connect people — and especially kids — with

nature. For Audubon it’s also about building an active political constituency for birds. We want to swell the ranks of their devoted friends because people want to save what they love. Many of our birds are in trouble, and urgently need friends who care enough to do what’s necessary to protect them. Bird watching is more than a hobby for many of us. We’re passionate about birds and we love to share our wonder and fascination with these amazing creatures. And we hope our passion is contagious, because it can change the way you look at the world around you. — Gene Bullock is newsletter editor for Kitsap Audubon. Contact him at genebullock@comcast.net

did this by compiling a list that included all the top wines we tasted under blind conditions — meaning we didn’t know who made the wine or what the price was until after the wine was evaluated and rated. Here are eight of our favorite wines from 2015. While not all of them are available anymore, you might still contact the wineries or your favorite wine merchants to see what might still be around. Also consider purchasing upcoming releases of the same wines to see how well they compare. ■ Passing Time 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $75: Our wine of the year is the inaugural vintage of this Woodinville winery co-owned by retired NFL quarterbacks Damon Huard and Dan Marino and winemaker Chris Peterson. Aromas and flavors of roasted coffee, black cherry, cocoa powder and blackstrap molasses help make this an instant classic. This wine has long been sold out, but sign up for future releases on the Passing Time website. (14.5 percent alcohol) ■ DeLille Cellars 2013 Chaleur Estate Blanc, Columbia Valley, $38: This classic white blend of Sèmillon and Sauvignon Blanc has produced a stunning wine with aromas and flavors

of starfruit, lemon pepper, apple and chalk dust. It is a luscious and complex wine. (13.2 percent alcohol) ■ Penner-Ash Wine Cellars 2012 Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton, $65: Our favorite Pinot Noir is from a legendary Oregon producer using some of the best grapes in the Willamette Valley. Notes of black currant, plum, cinnamon and espresso are backed by elegant tannins and beautiful acidity. A great wine from a legendary vintage. (14.2 percent alcohol) ■ Woodward Canyon Winery 2012 Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $99: Owner Rick Small and winemaker Kevin Mott crafted one of the great wines of the stunning 2012 vintage in this classic red that offers enchanting aromas and flavors of black licorice, sarsaparilla, dark chocolate, ripe plum and crushed black walnut. Drink now or cellar for up to two decades. (14.8 percent alcohol) ■ Owen Roe 2012 Red Willow Vineyard Chapel Block Syrah, Yakima Valley, $55: Longtime Northwest winemaker David O’Reilly has moved his winery to the Yakima Valley specifically to be close to grapes such as Red Willow Syrah. This is an expressive red with notes of blueberry, boysenberry, chocolate, pomegranate, cured meat and buttered toast. A See WINES, Page 7

Hood Winery 2014 Dry Riesling, Columbia Gorge, $20: Perhaps the best Riesling we tasted in 2015 was from this small Hood River winery. Aromas of Granny Smith apple and lime zest lead to flavors of pear, lemon and Graham cracker pie crust. Bracing acidity is like a sheet of ice across the palate. (12.2 percent alcohol) ■ Palencia Winery 2014 Albariño, Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley, $18: Albariño, a white Spanish variety, is gaining a toehold in the Northwest, and this example from a Walla Walla winery is one of the best around. Aromas and flavors of apple, pear, spice and honeydew melon are backed by stunning acidity perfect for enjoying with shellfish. (13 percent alcohol)

too many ambitious flowers when it comes to frills and color. Yet some of the most inconspicuous winter flowers are not so quiet in the odor department. They are well worth a spot in the garden. Winter fragrance is on hand with the deciduous winter honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima). Not much to look at most of the year, every winter the shrub rewards you with white flowers oozing with honeysuckle scent. You can tell by some of its other common names

■ Maloney Wines 2012 Elephant Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Rattlesnake Hills, $65: Cornell grad Josh Maloney went from red winemaker for Chateau Ste. Michelle to head winemaker for Milbrandt Vineyards and now has his own side project with this smalllot Cabernet Sauvignon. This inaugural release is superb, thanks to aromas and flavors of plum reduc-

— fragrant honeysuckle, January jasmine, kissme-at-the-gate, and sweet breath of spring — it has a fragrant reputation. I’ve seen this shrub planted as an informal hedge and it makes fantastic scaffolding for small clematis to grow through to liven up the hedge with some color during the warmer months. Another shrub that has little going for it the rest of the year is wintersweet. In late January, when it opens up its dangling, bell-shaped flowers you

tion sauce, black licorice, milk chocolate, vanilla, molasses and alder smoke. It’s backed by muscular tannins that will pair well with a juicy steak or age for a decade or more. The Edge of the Earth

From “Three Postcard Poemsâ€? Gary V. Anderson Slept in true light. No ambient here on shore of Lake Superior. This morning of mosquitoes, then warblers — blackthroated blue, yellow-rumped. No song equal to hermit thrush last night. Then northern lights. Wish you were here.

I know I am not a bird. Or an aeroplane. Or a river. Or an estuary. Or the ocean. But I am.

Compounded into the proof of who I am. It’s a destiny. This is my work. Daily in its making. Meanings that have yet to break the ground of my knowing, but seeds planted in the promise of a full bloom-crescendo of moments that flourish like life with a purpose.

In addition, she is working with a Washington state legislator to change the laws for hobby distillers. “Craft Distilling” includes a summary of the proposal Miller has submitted on the state and federal levels. Miller lives with her husband, David, on their off-grid farm in the foothills near Sequim. She writes and blogs about homesteading and self-reliance, and speaks at events around the country. She is also the author of “Pure Poultry: Living Well with Heritage Chickens, Turkeys and Ducks.”
