Suicide is a symptom of an illness BY MICHELLE BEAHM MBEAHM@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

BREMERTON — When it comes to suicide, “Sometimes, the warning signs are not big, flashy, blatant signs,” said Kelly Schwab, program supervisor of the Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas. “Sometimes, they’re pretty small things that can be hard to notice, and that’s

something else to be aware of.” The Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas helps people in Kitsap and the surrounding area with suicidal thoughts, or who know others with suicidal thoughts. Their 24-hour hotlines are 360-479-3033 for Kitsap or Clallam counties, 360-385-0321 for Jefferson County or 1-800-843-4793. The first three quarters of 2015 have

shown a record number of deaths by suicide happened in Kitsap County, a total of 52. (The numbers from the end of the year have yet to be tallied.) Schwab said part of the increase could have to do with population increase in the area, “but nationwide, there is a trend right now.” “Suicide is becoming more common,” he said, “the rates are going up.”

But, Schwab said, “Suicide is a symptom of a mental health condition or a health condition.” He said it’s not unlike asthmatics dying from an asthma attack; dying by suicide is a symptom of an illness. “The way the mind works on it, once a person starts thinking about suicide, they can be trapped into thinking that suicide is the only way, they have to die, and they have no choice in the matter,” Schwab said. “It’s at that point that a person makes that attempt.

BREMERTON — Dale Williams, retired Navy and father of three Bremerton School District students, just wanted to help kids and make sure they’re safe when he joined the district’s Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) volunteer program. Watch D.O.G.S. is a volunteer program for dads and other positive male role models that works to support education and safety within schools. A national program, it has a presence in more than 5,148 schools in 47 states, according to the Watch D.O.G.S. website (www.fathers.com/watchdogs); it was brought to Bremerton by teacher — and father — Matt Taran about seven years ago. When Taran was teaching at Crownhill Elementary and was vice president of the PTA, he attended a state PTA convention featuring the program. “It was really eye opening,” Taran said. “I remember coming out of it and I said to my wife right away, ‘We’ve got to get this program at our district.’ ” Crownhill Elementary was the first school in the district to implement the Watch D.O.G.S. program, but it soon snowballed. Now most elementary schools and the middle school have the program, and the high school has a similar one called Guiding Knights, SEE WATCH D.O.G.S., A9

Wedding expo for local couples BY MICHELLE BEAHM MBEAHM@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

BREMERTON — Most engagements happen during the holiday season, between November and Valentine’s Day, according to Paula Lowe, publisher of Wedding and Events Magazine. Lowe said many of them get engaged in December. That makes Saturday, Jan. 31, a great day to hold the West Sound Wedding Show in Bremerton’s Kitsap Conference Center. “The most popular time to get married, especially in the northwest, is between May and September, so the wedding professionals get really booked up,” Lowe said, “so it’s important to get them booked as soon as possible.” The West Sound Wedding Show will host more than 50 wedding professionals and range

from photographers to florists, caterers to venues, and “everything they need for their wedding,” Lowe said. The event is in its sixth year being hosted by the Wedding and Events Magazine, but has been an annual feature for more than 25 years, according to Lowe. “It pays for the brides and grooms to come to a local wedding expo,” Lowe said. “If they go outside Kitsap County, they often have to pay a travel fee.” But at this event, nearly all the vendors are local (and the ones that aren’t are nearby or travel a lot, Lowe said), and, as a side benefit, many have worked together numerous times. “Your wedding will go smoothly, because it’s people who have worked together before,” Lowe said. selected merchandise, and then exited the store through the rear emergency exit with a cart full of items. An alarm went off as she opened the door. The woman then went to Chamber’s vehicle, which was parked behind the store. Chambers allegedly helped the woman load the stolen merchandise into the back seat and the two then fled in the car, with Chambers driving. Although it was dark out, the car’s headlights were left off as Chambers sped through heavy traffic. He passed several vehicles on the right shoulder as the two approached the intersection of Bethel Road and Lund Avenue. Chambers blew through a red light and made a right turn onto Lund Avenue. Police stopped the car, but the woman ran off. Chambers was arrested without incident. “When questioned about the female suspect, he continuously provided false information,” the report stated. The stolen merchandise was returned to the store. Bail was set at $50,000. A 29-year-old Puyallup woman was charged with DUI and driving while license suspended or revoked. A Washington State Patrol trooper pulled the woman over at the intersection of Silverdale Way and Bucklin Hill Road Jan. 6 after observing the woman swerving her Dodge Ram pickup truck across the road. The woman smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes, according to the report. The woman failed a field sobriety test and was arrested. She vomited in the trooper’s car while on the way to jail. Her BAC was .188 and she had one prior DUI. The trooper wrote that the woman vomited so much that the patrol vehicle needed to be professionally cleaned. A 49-year-old Bremerton man was charged with theft in the third degree and reckless driving after he allegedly stole $260 worth of merchandise from the Bremerton Walmart Dec. 29. An employee confronted the man in the parking lot and asked him to return to the store. The man ran off, but the employee grabbed the cart full of merchandise. The man jumped into a small pickup truck and drove backward toward the employee and struck the shopping cart. He then sped off, but was later arrested. Robert J. “Little” Gould Jr., 41, of Bremerton, was charged with residential burglary. He is 6 foot 3 inches tall. A 21-year-old Bremerton woman was charged with DUI after she crashed her car into a ditch along Fairgrounds Road around 12:07 a.m. Jan. 6.

“I’m drunk,” the woman said, according to a Washington State Patrol report. “I tried to turn around. I’m drunk. It’s stupid,” she said. The woman allegedly drank four or five shots of vodka earlier. She had a BAC of 0.2. Troy Steven Hilger, 52, of Bremerton, was charged with delivery of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine. Hilger allegedly told police he uses methamphetamine for “energy.” Alan Edward Bodine, 53, of Bremerton, was charged with child molestation in the first degree. Bail was set at $100,000. Brandon R. Stephenson, 26, of Bremerton, was charged with two counts of identity theft in the second degree. Stephenson used an alias and allegedly used another person’s credit card information to make more than $3,000 worth of charges at various stores. A 32-year-old Bremerton woman was charged with driving while license suspended or revoked and resisting arrest. The woman allegedly drove 40 mph in a 60 mph zone of State Route 3 in a weaving manner. A Washington State Patrol trooper pulled her over, approached the vehicle on the passenger side and saw the woman was texting. The woman refused to provide identification or registration, wouldn’t tell the trooper her name and would not exit the vehicle when asked to do so. A second trooper determined her name. “I advised (the woman) she was under arrest for her suspended license and to exit the car. Again she refused to get out of the car. She told me I couldn’t arrest her,” the trooper wrote. Bail was set at $10,000. Coreena Danielle Pottruff, 32, of Bremerton, was charged with possession of stolen mail and stolen property. Pottruff allegedly drove around Fir Avenue Jan. 17 in a red SUV and stole mail from mailboxes. A deputy pulled her over and could see mail from various locations inside the SUV. A search warrant was obtained and 207 pieces of mail belonging to 78 different addresses was recovered. A 38-year-old Bremerton man was charged with DUI and hit-and-run after he crashed his car into another car at Warren Avenue and Sixth Sixth Street in Bremerton Jan. 9. The man sped off, but BPD found the man’s car nearby with steam coming from under the damaged hood and arrested him. The man’s BAC was .185. — Compiled by Chris Tucker

Gorst explosion renders one man unconscious, injured BY CHRIS TUCKER CTUCKER@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

GORST — An explosion knocked a man unconscious as he was cleaning up his welding work area at Viking Fence around 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 11. Coworkers and firefighters with South Kitsap Fire and Rescue tended to the man, who was later transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma. According to SKFR, employees at the company stated the man had been welding earlier but was in the process of cleaning up the work area. The welder was a metal inert gas type system, with no explosive chemicals being used. The

employees said that they heard a loud explosion and felt a type of shock wave and then found the man on the ground. There was a small rag about the size of a dishrag that was on fire approximately 20 feet from the man. Employees used a dry chemical extinguisher that was on site to extinguish the fire. Anticipating a possible structure fire at first, SKFR sent three fire engines, a ladder truck and several personnel. The first arriving unit confirmed there was no structure fire. Viking Fence is located at 3015 State Route 3, just south of Bremerton. The state Department of Labor and Industries will investigate the cause of the explosion.

Pickup driver crashes into school bus, cited for speeding BY CHRIS TUCKER CTUCKER@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

BREMERTON — The driver of a pickup truck who was hauling a load of bark in a trailer was cited for driving too fast for conditions after he crashed into Mercedes sedan and a school bus around 4:06 p.m. Jan. 12. According to the Washington State Patrol, Steven G. Brett, 63, of Bremerton, was cited for driving too fast for conditions. Brett was northbound on State Route 3, about one mile south of Bremerton, and approaching the intersection with Lake Flora Road in a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck. Just ahead of him, a southbound yellow 2016 Bluebird school bus was stopped with its lights and stop sign paddles activated. A northbound 2000 Mercedes sedan was stopped for the bus. Brett allegedly swerved over the center line, causing the trailer to begin oscillating back and

forth. The trailer struck the Mercedes and the school bus causing the bus to go into a ditch. The load of bark in the trailer spilled all over the highway. The trailer was totaled, but the truck itself was driven from the scene. Responding aid crews checked the 13 children riding in the school bus. One child was transported to Harrison Medical Center as a precaution. The driver of the school bus, a 52-year-old Port Orchard woman, was injured and taken to Harrison Medical Center. The bus had reportable damage and was towed from the scene. Brett and the driver of the Mercedes, who was also from Bremerton, were not injured. The Mercedes had reportable damage and was driven from the scene. All three motorists were wearing seat belts. The WSP stated driver inattention was also a factor in the crash.

Drivers of the Ford and the Honda stopped

for traffic in front of them, but the driver of the Dodge pickup truck was driving too fast and collided with the Ford, which in turn hit the Honda. The driver of the Ford, a 54-year-old Port Orchard woman, was injured and treated at the scene. The other two motorists were not injured. All three people involved were wearing seat belts. The driver of the Dodge, a 36-year-old Bremerton man, was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

State should pass law allowing dental therapists The state Legislature should pass a law allowing the licensing of dental therapists. In Alaska, Maine, Minnesota and the Swinomish Reservation, dental therapists provide basic preventive and restorative treatment to children and adults, and extractions of primary (baby) teeth under the supervision of a dentist. Dental therapists work primarily in areas that serve low-income, uninsured and underserved populations, or in areas where there are shortages of dental health professionals. Washington state legislators have failed to approve earlier legislation. They should do so now. Here’s why. One, Medicaid’s paltry dental-insurance reimbursement program. Few dentists — only three in 10 in Washington — accept Medicaid dental payments. The reasons are straight-forward: the government medical-care program pays just a fraction of the cost of dental procedures. A Seattle Times report this week says that a typical dental cleaning costs more than $100. But Washington’s state-administered Medicaid plan only reimburses dentists $24 of that charge. For dentists, that’s not a self-sustaining business model. And for patients, that’s just another barrier to proper care. Since about 1.7 million people in this state receive Medicaid, it’s a crisis that’s metastasizing. Of those subscribers who are adults, only 17 percent receive dental care, according to the Times. Those who can find a dentist are fortunate since only three out of 10 providers here accept Medicaid for adults. It’s a dilemma for dentists. Many have helped uninsured and underinsured with discounted services. They understand the value of preventative dental care. Unfortunately, two groups that represent dental-care providers aren’t doing their part to develop a workable, affordable solution. The American Dental Association (ADA) and Washington State Dental Association have fought — successfully the past five years — to derail what could be a partial solution to the crisis: licensing dental therapists in this state. In Washington, dental therapists are barred from working on patients. The solution, according to the state dental association: increase Medicaid payments. However, there’s evidence that dental therapists boost dental-practice revenues while providing services to those needing care. The few states that license dental therapists say patients getting needed care make fewer trips to the emergency room, have fewer chronic conditions and have less need for expensive dental care. And patient backlogs have shrunk. It’s time for the dental associations to take a broader view.

More four-year degree programs coming to OC As a 2015 Aspen Prize finalist, Olympic College was recognized as one of the top 10 community colleges in the nation, which places us in the top 1 percent nationally. We look to build on that distinction in 2016 through the expansion of programs and partnerships that are preparing the next generation of skilled workers, and industry and community leaders in Kitsap and Mason counties. OC currently offers bachelor degree programs in nursing, computer information systems and organizational leadership and technical management (OLTM). The OLTM program launched this fall with a full cohort of 24 students. Many of the students in this program are Puget Sound Naval Shipyard employees who earned their associate degrees with OC through our industry-leading apprenticeship program. The OLTM program allows students to earn the academic credentials they need to fill management positions that are being vacated by baby boomers who are leaving the workforce. Opportunities for place-bound students to earn bachelor’s degrees locally will increase in 2016 thanks to partnership programs with local universities. Washington State University, which offers a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at our Bremerton campus, will add an electrical engineering program that will help to fill a growing need for engineers locally. At our Poulsbo campus, Western Washington University will expand its offerings to include a cyber-se-

My Turn

David Mitchell curity bachelor’s degree. This program provides yet another opportunity for students to earn their associate degree at OC, then transfer into a highly sought-after program without having to leave Kitsap County. In addition to cyber security, which is expected to launch next fall, WWU also offers degrees in education, human resources, environmental science/policy and business administration at our Bremerton and Poulsbo campuses. Mason County residents will also have more educational opportunities thanks to our partnership with the Mason Transit Authority. Later this year, we will begin offering culinary courses in the state-of-the art commercial kitchen in the Transit-Community Center. OC Shelton will also offer computer classes in the center’s computer lab. OC has the second-largest population of veterans, active duty and

dependents of any college in the state. Thanks to a $320,000 federal grant, we will establish a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success aimed at increasing enrollment and degree completion for veterans. While the landscape of program offerings at OC changes, so too does the physical landscape with the ongoing construction of the College Instruction Center. The building, which is scheduled for completion in 2017, includes new homes for art, music and theater programs, as well as a 276-seat theater that will draw the community to our Bremerton campus for events like the Olympic Jazz Festival. The building also includes space for the physical therapy program, some nursing programs, simulation labs and high-tech active learning classrooms. We remain committed to promoting diversity both in the classroom and in our workforce. In 2015, we hired our first vice president for equity and inclusion, Cheryl Nuñez, who brings extensive experience developing and leading strategic diversity plans in higher education. Our goal is to close the access and opportunity gaps for all of our citizens. This coming year promises continued growth and increased opportunities for OC students in Kitsap and Mason counties to achieve their academic and professional goals. — Dr. David Mitchell is president of Olympic College

My friend Leslie and I tied shoestrings to our bike handlebars and pretended we were riding horses. We made trails in the woods behind my house. either. Sadly, we just couldn’t see our bikes as horses anymore. The real world was pressing in. Still, those experiences we had in elementary school surely contributed to our more formalized education in intangible ways. Some homework after dinner didn’t interfere with that. Today’s kids have this backwards. We put them in the organized sports pipeline at 2- and 3-years old, shuttling them to and from soccer multiple times a week before they’ve even started school. In grade school, they join more teams and are practicing many nights of the week. A lot of these kids are burned out on sports and activities by the time they get to junior high, which is precisely the time their childhood drive to “play” typically ends, and it makes sense to occupy a teenager’s time with sports, activities, and, yes, homework. Again, I don’t have the answer about whether homework is beneficial to learning. I don’t know if it’s worthwhile. What I do know is that children shouldn’t be “too busy” for pretty much anything. And if that’s the only thing we have against homework, we need to ask ourselves why. Indeed, to blame a child’s stress level on 30-minutes of homework because it interferes with sports and other structured activities might be less about meeting educational goals and more about uncovering a bigger problem.

Olympic outpaces Kingston 61-46 BY JOHNNY WALKER CORRESPONDENT

CENTRAL KITSAP — The Olympic Trojans resolved any question Friday night about whether they had a desire to return to state competition. The team that shared the league 2A title with North Kitsap in 2014-15 and earned sixth place at state was now a relative third place in the league with dwindling opportunities. Every game counted and in 32 minutes, a test of resolve would give the answer. The Kingston Buccaneers came out strong on their home court in the first quarter, hitting easily from the outside and building a quick lead. But the first quarter 14-9 margin soon stalled against the more aggressive Bremerton team and didn’t come back. At the final buzzer, the Trojans rode home with a 46-61 win that kept their hopes alive at number three in the Olympic 2A League (6-6, 3-2 league), leaving the Buccaneers at fifth (4-6, 1-2). “Kingston came out hot, fired up and ready to go,” said Olympic Head Coach Devin Huff. “They always shoot the ball

well and are well disciplined. We had to change defense on the fly and knock down shots. I’m very proud of our defensive effort. For us to hold Kingston to 46 points was pretty solid.” But solid didn’t really take hold until after the half, when Kingston was only down by one point, 27-28. “Coming out of the locker room, we needed to do a better job controlling the tempo and moving the ball up and down the court,” Huff said. “We could have easily said it wasn’t our night but we rebounded better and took care of the ball. That opened up opportunities.” The opportunities for the Trojans included holding back the Buccaneer offense led by Kingston Junior Andrew Shaw, who racked up 18 total points. In contrast, the Trojans were able improve on rebounds and counter with Juniors Chase Matheny for 18 points, Tyler Yost for 17 and Senior Mikhail Hayes with 11. Kingston’s other top shooters were Juniors Liam Young at 9 and Gavin Veilleux with 7. “Olympic is a great team. They always have incredibly tough and intense play-

ers,” said Kingston Head Coach Ben Wisniewski. “The game got more physical and we didn’t match their intensity. Our aggressiveness went away and we didn’t stay in attack mode. As a result, they were able to make more of their plays in the third and fourth quarter.” Relative experience in varsity competition may have also been a factor. According to the team rosters, Olympic had eight seniors, three juniors, and only one sophomore listed. Kingston’s bench was younger with two seniors, seven juniors, and two sophomores. “Losing to Olympic puts us in the hole,” said Wisniewski, “but its nothing we can’t overcome. It isn’t physical conditioning, it is a mentality of keeping the same energy and intensity all the time. We can absolutely get where we need to be in the top of the standings.” Kingston meets Olympic again Jan. 29 at Olympic High School. “Kingston has a very good coach and they are disciplined,” Huff said, thinking about the rematch. “He’ll adjust. It will be a dog fight.”

Kingston High School’s Andrew Shaw (14) led the Buccaneer offense against the Olympic Trojans Friday night, shooting 18 points during the league game. Olympic prevailed 61-46.

RENTON — Just about everything in the Seattle Seahawks’ 10-9 wild-card playoff victory over the Vikings on Sunday was unique, and Seattle head coach Pete Carroll was reveling in that uniqueness the day after. “There was just something about this game that made it really special” Carrol said said Monday at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. “It was a unique opportunity all the way through to the very end of it.” Perhaps the most unique aspect of the game was the weather. The minus-6 degrees at kickoff tied the record for the third-coldest playoff game in NFL history. But while the prospect of playing and coaching in those conditions would make most shudder, for Carroll, it made the experience all the more exhilarating. “I had a blast,” Carroll said. “It was so much

fun, because it was just so crazy. Everything about it is just crazy. The preparation part of it, the mental side of it that everybody was dealing with to get right so that they can be at their best, you could feel it and see it. “There was big energy about that with our players and our coaches, too, because they didn’t want to succumb to it, they didn’t want to give in to it, and nobody did. So there was a real uplifted kind of emotion about just taking on the challenge and not being overwhelmed by the elements. So the whole thing was fun.” The ending was also unusual. Seattle’s season seemed done and dusted when the Vikings lined up for a chip-shot 27-yard field goal with 26 seconds to play in the game. However, Minnesota kicker Blair Walsh pulled the kick wide left, much to the disbelief of all who were watching. “It was a very fortunate victory for us,” Carroll admitted. “We played really good football and did a lot of cool stuff, but we were fortunate to CASHIER: TO APPLY DISCOUNT TYPE NUMBER BELOW.

win it, and on we go.” Walsh had made field goals of 22, 43 and 47 yards earlier in the game. On the 47-yarder, which came late in the third quarter, Seattle’s Richard Sherman came rushing around the end and was within a fingernail’s length of getting a piece of the kick. Could the memory of Sherman nearly making the block have played a part in Walsh missing the kick to win the game? “The final kick was kicked much faster than the other kicks,” Carroll said. “I’d need to give you the times, but it was considerably faster. So

for whatever reason they sped up their mechanism, Sherm couldn’t have been closer (on the third field goal), we can’t figure out how he didn’t get it. So they went quite a bit faster. I don’t know, you’d have to ask them, but that fact is in there.” The Seahawks under Carroll have also become that unique team that has no problem with falling behind in playoff games. Cascade Warbirds has teamed with Galvin Flight Service at Boeing Field in Seattle to provide scholarship recipients with tuition, books and supplies, and two introductory instructional flights. The ground school portion comprises classroom lectures, visual presentations, group

discussions, practical exercises and field trips over a period of approximately 55 hours. Classes generally meet two weeknights per week for two-anda-half hours and one Saturday per week for four hours over a period of six weeks. Successful completion of this private pilot ground school will qualify a student to take the FAA private pilot written exam. Seattle is 5-2 in playoff games in which it has trailed by nine or more points. The rest of the NFL is 6-41. It’s a remarkable stat, one that suggests an uncommon resilience in these Seahawks. “I saw that stat, too, today and I didn’t know it, but I couldn’t be more proud of that,” Carroll said. “We’ve pulled off some pretty exciting finishes, and we’ve been part of the other end of it, too. But for the most part we’ve done it really well. “It’s a really good thing to know about yourself when you’re going into these games,” he went on. “I may have mentioned to the guys we’re not out of the game, there’s still time. Whatever it takes, 1:52 PM the offense or the defense, to get it going

of which will be matched to the student. The first flight will occur part way through the ground school, based on the instructor’s recommendation, and the second flight will occur after the successful completion of the ground school course. Each flight will include a preflight briefing, actual taxi and runway procedures, introduction to radio communications, the take-off, a series of in-flight maneuvers, the return and landing and post-flight pro-

again. There’s a spark just waiting to happen to get us rolling, and we’re going to keep playing like that.” A little less unique was the continued excellent play by Seattle’s defense. Seattle held Minnesota to 183 yards of offense, and it was the third time in the past six games the Seahawks did not allow the opposing offense into the ends zone. The defense was particularly stout against Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Peterson, the NFL’s rushing champion, was held to just 45 yards on 23 carries. It was the second time this season Seattle bottled up Peterson. He was held to a mere 18 yards on eight carries when the teams played during the regular season, a game won by Seattle 38-7. “It’s really the discipline that they’ve played with,” Carroll said about why Seattle was able to shut Peterson down twice. “Both games were basically the same. It’s

the discipline to understand the scheme that we play and the schemes that they use in their running game, just being patient and tough when you have to be, being physical at the line of scrimmage and being really well coordinated because it takes all of that to keep him from breaking out. The one time we make a mistake he gets 12 yards. I thought it was a tremendous illustration of what it takes to play great run defense against a really excellent football player. It was play after play after play of continuing to do the right thing. That’s how it goes. It’s not just how tough you are or how fast you run or anything, you have to do things right and the guys are doing a great job of that.” — Check out Nick Patterson’s Seattle Sidelines blog at www.heraldnet.com/seattlesidelines, and follow him on Twitter at @ NickHPatterson.

SUICIDE CONTINUED FROM A1

“What I’m trying to really emphasize is, we’re talking about a symptom of an illness, and not a choice. And it is a treatable illness.” He said that around 900 to 1,000 people call the clinic for help every month, at the clinic is not the only resource available to those with suicidal thoughts, or for people who think their loved ones or even just acquaintances may have those thoughts. Schwab said that other than the clinic, people in Kitsap can find help at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255), Teen Link Crisis Center (206-461-4922), the Kitsap Mental Health’s 24-hour Crisis Response Team (360-373-3425) and

though the high school version is for men and women who want to be positive role models. But Watch D.O.G.S. is “just focused on creating a welcoming avenue for dads to get involved in their children’s education, in whatever capacity was most comfortable for them,” said Taran, who now teaches at View Ridge Elementary in Bremerton. “Most men are uncomfortable when they think about being involved in their child’s education,” he added, “uncomfortable in coming into the classroom and spending time in the school. “It’s usually women in here … It’s just not always the most inviting environment, so Watch D.O.G.S. was a program really focused on getting more dads involved.” Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers are only asked to commit a single day in the school year, but ideally, Taran said, they would come back over and over again. “The more time they spend here, the more time they get to create those relationships, and those relationships are wonderful,” Taran said. Williams has been volunteering with Watch D.O.G.S. for five years now. With two children attending View Ridge Elementary, and one in middle school, he splits his time between the two schools. emergency rooms or with medical health professionals. To get help for a loved one, Schwab said there are “three basic options: they can either try to get the person to talk with us or a mental health professional; they can get the person to go to the emergency room or call 911; or they can try to stay with the person until the crises pass.” He added that one of the biggest things a person can do for someone with suicidal thoughts is to give them a chance to talk. “Which means that, if they are going to do that, they have to be willing to listen to what the person needs to talk about, even though it can be kind of scary or hard to listen to at times,” Schwab said. “Just letting the person know that you’re comfortable to talk about whatever they need to

talk about, and then being willing to ask direct questions.” He said it’s important to ask direct questions like, “Are you thinking of suicide? Do you have a plan on how you would kill yourself? Do you have the means to kill yourself? Do you know when you are planning on doing it?” He added that if they have the means, to try to convince them to let you hang on to their means, “and then going back to the same three options, trying to get them connected to help so they can work on the further issues.” For people who just want to help, the Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas is run by volunteers. To volunteer, call the clinic at 360-479-3033 or visit the website, crisisclinicothepeninsulas. org. The process includes an inter-

“The way the mind works on it, once a person starts thinking about suicide, they can be trapped into thinking that suicide is the only way, they have to die, and they have no choice in the matter. It’s at that point that a person makes that attempt.” – Kelly Schwab, Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas (360-479-3033) view, background check and training, which includes about 33 classroom hours and 10 observation and practical training hours. After the training is complete, volunteers are asked for a one-year commitment of one fourhour shift per week, and either an overnight or weekend shift a month. Schwab said, “It really comes down to the three basics of … being willing to ask directly, are you thinking of suicide, do you have a plan; listening

to the person; and then making sure that some action is taken to help the situation, so the person is connected to help.” For more information, visit cri sisclinicofthepeninsulas.org. “I always feel like I make a difference, everytime I come in here. That’s why I keep coming back every week. How much more of a difference can I make today?” – Dale Williams, Watch D.O.G.S. volunteer the middle school, they already have that relationship of trust and safety. What the volunteers do with their time varies on the school. Sometimes, the dads will work with students oneon-one, or in small groups, to help foster an understanding of a subject being taught in class that day. Or, they could be asked to work with students who may have behavioral issues. Taran said he’s asked Williams to work with students and “show that being physical isn’t the way to necessarily answer our problems,” Taran said. Williams said that in many of those cases, the student is acting out because “they don’t have their father here, because they’re either out to sea or they’re working somewhere else that’s not in the home, or they’re not even in they picture.” “Me being retired Navy, I know exactly what they’re talking about, where they’re coming from,” Williams said. “So I kind of relate to them, say, ‘I used to do that, I know what you’re going through. I know it’s hard, but just keep in mind, he will come back.’ Then they turn it all around.” Taran said, “It’s just nice for them to start to be able to develop this relationship with someone else who they know cares about them, and who’s

kind of been in the same boat, and understands.” But the program is also about safety. Williams said at the middle school, he mostly walks around campus, making sure the doors that are supposed to be locked are, providing a deterrent against fighting just by being in the proximity and other things like that. “I got involved because I wanted to help my kids, and be with the other kids and help them as well, because I know that when you’re gone for so long and you see kids failing all the time, you see it on the news all the time, how kids are getting in trouble,” Williams said. “Guns in school, drugs, all that. “I felt … I could deter that, just by me being there,” he said. “And if I’m in the classroom, I can help the teachers, help the kids, any way they need me to. So that’s why I got involved.” Taran said it’s a very rewarding program, for both the students and the volunteers. “I think you get so much more out of it than what’s put in,” Taran said. “Not to demean or take away from what you put in, because what you put in is huge. But I think what you get out of it and what the kids get out of it is so much more.” To get involved in the Watch

Hospice thrift store closes Jan. 31 Bremerton accountant firms merge BREMERTON — The Hospice of Kitsap County Thrift Store will stop taking donations this week and will close Jan. 31. In anticipation of the closure, the store will hold a clearance sale to sell the remaining merchandise. The Thrift Store, located at 301 Pacific Ave., in Bremerton, was not part of MultiCare’s purchase of Hospice of Kitsap County. “We appreciate the dedication of the employees and volunteers who ran this store and we thank them for their service,” said Kevin Turner, executive director of Hospice of Kitsap County. The store, which opened

in 2014, had supported Hospice of Kitsap County operations. MultiCare is focused on improving and expanding the hospice services. Keeping the Thrift Store would divide attention from that priority. MultiCare purchased Hospice of Kitsap County Operating in December under the name of MultiCare Hospice. The transition will be complete on Feb. 1. MultiCare Hospice will work to expand access to hospice resources in Kitsap County. Hospice of Kitsap County has nearly 50 employees and more than 60 volunteers. Dog’s love inspires effort to help others Operation Holiday Starr BY PETER O'CAIN Kitsap Weekly

K

INGSTON — Starr was a people dog. So much so that Toni Houck, the 12-year-old Dachshund's owner, would let her go on sleepovers at other people’s houses. Starr ruptured a disc in her back while playing in early November. Following the injury, her quality of life was not good and a decision had to be made. “After many vet visits, I had to make the dreaded decision to put her to sleep after it was concluded that she wouldn’t get better,” Houck said. Houck rescues horses that are wild or bound for slaughter. When one of them dies, she likes to honor them by doing something for animals. But Starr was such a people dog, Houck decided to do something for people. “I had seen on social media the idea of putting items for the homeless in purses,” Houck said. “I decided that was what I would do.” She called it Operation Holiday Starr. The idea was to collect backpacks and purses, filled with necessary items, and then give them to homeless people. Houck went to Facebook in early November and

asked friends to donate. Her goal was to get 50 backpacks and purses by Thanksgiving. She reached her goal within the first week and finished with 261. “Every day, I was taking home a Durango full of purses,” Houck said. Houck collected so many that her boyfriend, Andy Prader, hung doors from the basement ceiling to use as shelves so they could organize them all. Sony Sewing Co. donated 50. The Seattle-based company is owned by the brother of Houck’s manicurist, who told him of Houck’s plan. The purses and backpacks were filled with hygiene products (shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste) and clothes (gloves, hats, scarves). Some even had glasses, vests and first aid kits. “We spent many nights prepping and filling bags,” Houck said. On Nov. 28, Houck and eight friends loaded the bags into two SUVs and headed to Seattle. “We parked downtown and carried every single backpack up and down every hill, alley and park we could find looking for people that we could give bags to,” Houck said. They did it for eight hours. Houck said she was in tears numerous times.

Right, Toni Houck’s dog Starr loved people so much that Houck was inspired to start a campaign to help others during the holiday season. Above, Toni Houck shows off a stack of donated backpacks and purses. Courtesy photos “It was amazing. These people were so grateful,” Houck said. “It was something so devastating,” she said of her dog’s death, “that turned into something so beautiful.” One interaction stood out to Houck. She approached a man she presumed to be homeless. She was a bit intimidated, but she gave him a backpack and a hug. As she was walking away, he called out to her, “Hey, you! You make a difference.” “It was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done,” she said of the experience. She said none of it would’ve been possible without the residents of Kingston.

“I just can’t say enough about the town of Kingston,” Houck said. “The people just came through.” Next time, the plan is to hand out backpacks and purses in Kitsap County and Seattle. One thing Houck will do differently: Not wear cowboy boots. “Ten hours of walking in boots is not for the city,” Houck said. “Just the farm.” Operation Holiday Starr is accepting donations from now until November. Blue Star Banners need a little lift

the Blue Star Banner program in Kitsap County

Anyone wanting to help her can call her at 360440-6497, or email her at lynette@bluestarbanner. org. She also needs volunteers who can help log the banners and help her contact banner recipients to mail them their banners once they leave the service. Go to the program website, www.bluestarbanner. org, for information about how to purchase a banner for a loved one who is serving. There are options for purchasing smaller banners for automobiles, magnets and magnetic banners to hang at home. All of the banners are made locally by Graphic Reflections in Port Orchard. George is also looking for the family of Devon Gibbons, who is honored with a Gold Star banner in Kitsap County, to discuss replacement of his banner.

who served in the military. George’s sons, Christopher Weimar, 31, of Seabeck, who served in the Army, and Wayne George, 33, of Longview, who was a Marine, both suffered psychological and physical injuries at war. They both have servicerelated disabilities. But George, who served in the Navy from 1981-85, considers herself lucky. “My sons came home,” she said. “I’m just so lucky.” She also feels lucky to be a part of the banner program. “I’ve met the most amazing people doing this,” she said. “That has made every step of this journey worth it.”

ust about anywhere you travel in Kitsap County, you’ll see them. They’re a significant show of Kitsap County residents’ pride in our military. They’re the Blue Star Banners. But some of them have been hanging proudly since 2006. And they need to be replaced. According to Lynette George, founder of the Blue Star Banner program in Kitsap County, a small group of volunteers have been working to get them replaced. “The wind here has really gotten to some of them,” she said. “Some are torn, or faded, or really look worn. We are trying to make sure that those that need to be replaced get replaced.” But the process hasn’t been that easy. First, she said, they had to do an inventory of the banners and determine which needed replacing. Then, she had to contact the individual or the family of the military member honored on the banner. “If they are still serving, we make arrangements to replace the banner,” she said. “If they’ve left the military, then, we send them their banner and we make room for someone new to have a banner.” The banners, she explained, honor those currently serving. The one exception to that are the Gold Star Banners which honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and have given their life for their country. There are 19 Gold Star banners in the area. As far as the costs to replace the banners, George said the program has money to replace banners when family members cannot afford to. “We’ve received grants from the Kitsap Community Foundation and Port Madison

Enterprises (an agency of the Suquamish Tribe) and we can help when help is needed,” she said. The cost to replace each banner is $100. When each banner is originally purchased, each costs $350, but $200 of that is for the hardware to hang the banner, which doesn’t need to be replaced, she said. Currently, there are 93 banners in Silverdale and at least 25 need to be replaced. In all, there are 367 banners throughout Kitsap, Mason, Clallam and Jefferson counties, with 112 in Port Orchard, 50 in Poulsbo, 49 in Bremerton, 11 in Kingston, nine in Seabeck, eight in Belfair, 11 in Port Angeles and five elsewhere in Jefferson County. Banners are being replaced throughout all of these locations. Her list includes one in Seabeck, one in Bremerton and five in Port Orchard. When the banners were originally placed, much of the work was donated by WAVE Cable. “They’ve been great to us,” she said. “But right now they’ve had so much work with storm damage that they aren’t able to do the replacement work.” And that’s where George is in need. “We need volunteers who can help us hang the banners,” she said. “Preferably some company that has a bucket truck, or long ladders. Someone like a tree-trimming company or tree service would be great.” In the past few months, George and one other volunteer have spent three eight-hour days doing what banner replacement they can, with the ladders they have. But she is hoping someone will come forward with a bucket truck and sign on to help. George began the Blue Star Banner program in Kitsap County after seeing a similar program in California. She is a Navy veteran and has two sons
