Rice was mayor two terms from 1989-1997. “What’s the most persistent and urgent question?” Rice asked. “What are we doing for others?” The key, he said, was to pull up others in need, “into the light.” “All of us has that responsibility to do that. BREMERTON — The fifth annual Washington State African American Achievement Awards ceremony will be held 6 p.m. (4 p.m. for dinner) Jan. 30 at the Bremerton Performing Arts Center, 1500 13th St. The awards were started five years ago by Deborah Moore Jackson, and it has grown every year since.

“I started this at Bremerton High School, because we didn’t have any black history classes,” Moore Jackson said. “Our children needed to understand that African Americans, people that look like them, have been doing (good things) for a long time.” According to Eastern Regional Director Francelle Daubert, every year there’s a theme for choosing SEE LEADERS, A6

BREMERTON — Major Maynard “Rocky” Hoffmann, former Marine and Pearl Harbor survivor, passed away at age 97 on Jan. 8. The following is an article that ran in a 2012 edition of Veteran’s Life that honored Maj. Hoffmann: Born in Seattle in 1918, Maj. Hoffmann enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve while a student at Roosevelt High School in Seattle. He applied for active duty in 1940. “I looked forward to going to boot camp. I didn’t want to be drafted into the Army and that’s what they were doing at the time.” Hoffmann was a 23-year-old sergeant when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Hoffmann was stationed at the Ewa Marine Corps Air Station which is now known as Barbers Point Naval Air Station. Three miles from Pearl Harbor, Ewa Marine Corps Air Station was completed in early 1941. When the attack at Pearl Harbor occurred, four runways had been constructed, in addition to buildings and hangars. Ewa was the first American installation hit during the Pearl Harbor attack. Hoffmann closed his eyes, recalling the moment. “It took us all by total surprise. It took several minutes for people to determine what happened and what to do. One guy said, ‘I have never heard of an engine that sounds like that.’ A simple statement, but that’s when we SEE ROCKY, A6

Stennis deployed Jan. 15

BREMERTON — Sailors aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) departed their homeport of Naval Base Kitsap — Bremerton for a regularly scheduled deployment, Jan. 15. Stennis Sailors manned the rails as the ship sailed away from the pier at 8:30 a.m. and began the transit through the Puget Sound to the Pacific Ocean. While it is hard to say goodbye to loved ones, sailors are keeping a positive attitude and looking forward to all of the experiences. “Deployment is bittersweet,” said Logistics Specialist Seaman Miguel Torres, from Tacoma. “I hate having to leave my family behind, but I get to see the world. I’m excited to see all of the sites that people only get to see on TV. I get to experience the real thing.” For a quarter of the crew, this is their first deployment. For other sailors, this isn’t their first rodeo. “This is my second deployment, but I’m still really excited,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Ryan Blackwell, from Crys-

tal Lake, Illinois. “My first deployment was a great experience, and I learned a lot. I’m mostly looking forward to port visits and experiencing all of the cultures I’ve never seen before.” Stennis’ crew has spent 56 percent of the past year underway preparing for this deployment to the Western Pacific area of operations. They expect to participate in a number of exercises — training, integrating and building capacity with allies in that region. “Deploying is the culmination of our training,” said Capt. Mike Wettlaufer, Stennis’ commanding officer. “This crew has attacked every challenge thrown their way, and as we leave to answer our nation’s call, I couldn’t be any prouder of them. We are ready.” Stennis is the nuclear-powered flagship of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSSG), which will also deploy as part of an ongoing rotation of U.S. forces supporting maritime security operations in waters around the world. The strike group will be the centerpiece of the Great Green Fleet, a year-long initiative

Kyle S. Bryceland, 18, of Bremerton, and Christopher Jerome Jones, Jr., 24, of Silverdale, were both charged in Kitsap County District Court. According to the Bremerton Police Department, the two victims in this robbery — who were both adult men — were in contact with the suspects on Facebook. The suspects and the victims decided to “hang out.” Bryceland drove a silver fourdoor Lexus toward the residence near Naval Avenue and Eighth Street. With him was Jones, sitting in the front passenger seat, and a third man, sitting in the left rear passenger seat. Jones exited the car just before arriving. Bryceland then picked up the two victims, drove a short distance and stopped in an alley. Bryceland told the vic-

tims that the reason for the stop was that a gym bag in the back seat needed to be moved to the trunk. Bryceland and the third man who was with him exited the car. Jones, who had been waiting at the location and was wearing a mask, then allegedly pointed a handgun through the car’s open window and demanded money and property from the two victims who had remained in the car. One victim immediately fled on foot while the other turned over a cell phone and umbrella before also getting out of the car and running away. Bremerton officers spoke to the victims and a description of the suspect car was broadcast. Within minutes, the car was located by Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Deputies at a gas station at State Route

303 and Fairgrounds Road. All occupants were taken into custody and the vehicle was later searched after a search warrant was obtained. A BB-type replica handgun was found under the front seat of the car. “In Washington State, replica firearms perceived to be real are considered as real firearms for purposes of prosecution,” BPD stated. Additionally, detectives located property and papers from at least three separate incidents of car prowling in the area. Credit cards, cell phones, and other personal property including passports were recovered. An amount of methamphetamine was also located in the car. BPD stated it would contact victims of car prowls who may have had their property

Vote ‘yes’ for CK School District’s bond and levy Central Kitsap School District is asking voters to support a threeyear $3.47 per $1,000 assessed value levy to help pay for daily operations. CKSD is also asking voters to support a 20-year $1.74 per $1,000 assessed value bond that would fund an ambitious $220 million major upgrade of its buildings. Both are worthwhile investments. The two measures would cost taxpayers the same total school tax rate they are currently paying – $5.21 per $1,000 assessed value. CK High School, built in 1942, and CK Middle School, in 1959, have served students well over the years, but they are tired buildings in need of costly and significant repairs and should be replaced. According to CKSD, it would cost $15-$20 million less to build a new high school and middle school than it would to repair the existing buildings. If approved, the proposed bond would also end the use of portable buildings at CKHS, Olympic High School and Klahowya High School. Instead, permanent classrooms would be built. The physical age of CKHS, the presence of asbestos in the buildings, security concerns and lack of adherence to modern fire and seismic codes are big issues that are worth addressing. The electrical system at CKHS also appears to be inadequate. These are significant structural deficiencies, and it’s often more expensive to repair, retrofit and remodel existing buildings than to just tear a building down and start from scratch. The proposed pick-up and drop-off bus and car lanes as well as parking lot improvements in the plan fulfill efficiency and safety needs. Interest rates are low, and it makes sense to start construction now to avoid expected higher inflationary costs later. Now is a good time to get this project moving. The downside to the bond is that taxpayers will be burdened with a 20-year obligation. (The levy is for three years.) CKSD mailed a flyer recently that stated the proposed bond and levy are not new taxes. It would have been better if they called them replacement taxes. One concern is that there are other tax proposals in the pipeline such as a foot ferry sales tax. Voters also recently approved two levies and a bond for Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue. At some point the taxpayer could start rejecting tax increases, regardless of merit. CKSD is a good school district with caring teachers. Although many people tend to support schools less after their children have passed through the system, it is our feeling that supporting the schools is important. Having students work their way through a good, strong, challenging school system makes for good, successful citizens with much potential. It makes for the kind of community that we want to live in.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Support CK school plan

Central Kitsap School District has put forward a capital projects bond issue to proceed with the Long Range Capital Projects Plan Phase 2. In all fairness to the tax payers, a good review of past performance is in order. The levy for phase 1 of the long range plan was adopted in 2012. Recognizing the shortfalls and errors made in presenting the plan the first time (and having it soundly rejected), the school board made a much better effort to clearly define the work to be accomplished under the plan and the schedule for completion. The taxpayers, properly informed and having a basis to determine compliance, approved the levy and authorized work under the 2012-2016 phase of the Capital Projects Plan. Now, after four years, it is clearly evident that the district has done exactly what it promised and has done so on time and under budget. The long list of projects in phase 1, (81 projects in 19 schools and two facilities) with the replacement of Jackson Park Elementary as the major element, is nearing completion. In addition to finishing the capital projects in the plan, the district has done an excellent job handing all of the preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep all of the facilities operating properly. Of further note is that the unexpected loss of Heavy Impact funds from the federal government (an issue still under appeal) resulted in about $25 million not being available to complete the planned projects. The district wisely concentrated on the learning facilities projects and delayed the commencement of the transportation/food service warehouse construction project. (The recent announcement that a part of the withheld impact funds will be restored should reduce the total bond issue by about $10 million.) The district also remained highly flexible and completed major technology updates to the infrastructure systems and introduced enhanced technology learning systems to the classrooms. The school district has performed as promised and established a first-rate team that is ready to move on to capital projects phase 2. If you are interested in why I am so positive in my endorsement of the district, the answer is simple. Recognizing the difficulties associated with taxpayer awareness of actual details in a capital projects plan and realizing that internal review would not be sufficient, the district estab-

lished a citizen panel of construction, facilities maintenance, finance and technology professionals to review the actual plan progress and to make comment and recommendation regarding risk assessment and mitigation and public communication. I was asked to serve on that panel and have participated in a review of the program each quarter for the past four years. The members of the citizens’ panel asked the hard questions and demanded the proper answers on your behalf. My appreciation of the district effort under the 2012-2016 levy and capital projects phase 1 effort is simple – “Promises Made, Promises Kept.” Now it is time for all of us forward with approval of the bond measure and execution of capital projects phase 2. — Jack Hamilton, Silverdale.

CK school plan ‘out of touch’ How utterly disappointed I am to see CKSD completely ignored voters’ expectations, the Legislature’s $10.2 million additional funding, and the State Supreme Court’s mandate to eliminate reliance on special levies to fund basic education. The recent CKSD mailing states “promises made, promises kept.” That may be so, but they’re asking for the same amount, (not $10.2M less), as the last levy in addition to a very ambitious capital bond measure. That’s pretty arrogant and out-of-touch with the community’s economic situation. Formerly, CK shined with a premier elementary library program. Now testing and tech support for teachers has superseded children learning fundamental reading, research, on-line safety and enthusiasm for reading and learning. Without a solid foundation, our students will be clueless in public and university libraries. Smaller class size will not help students who are stuck with a curriculum that requires teachers to use a set script and restricts them from employing their creative & proven techniques from past successful years. Levies may be necessary, but not at the magnitude this district is demanding. New State monies plus return of the lost federal impact assistance should reduce CKSD’s levy request significantly. Sadly, the only recourse is to vote NO on Feb. 9. — Carrie Riplinger, Seabeck.

Some Kitsap clergy members accused of sexual assault BY ROBERT SMITH PORT ORCHARD INDEPENDENT EDITOR

A list of 77 priests, brothers, deacons and sisters accused of sexually assaulting children since the early part of the last century was released Jan. 15 by the Archdiocese of Seattle. The list includes clergy who served at churches and parishes in some Kitsap Peninsula and San Juan Island areas. One of the priests accused was James Pommier, who had been assigned to the periodic

ministry for the Olympic Peninsula area and served from 1979-1985 with St. Gabriel in Port Orchard. Pommier, who is deceased, was affiliated with the Diocese of Bismarck. According to the news release distributed by the archdiocese, the list was published as part of its “ongoing commitment to transparency and to encourage persons sexually abused by clergy or by anyone working on behalf of the church to come forward.” Those named in the list have either served

BREMERTON — In 2015, Washington State Ferries carried 23.9 million total riders, an increase of 2.9 percent over 2014 and the highest level since 2006. The number of vehicles carried system-wide was up 2.4 percent and the number of passengers increased by 3.4 percent over 2014. The Seattle/Bremerton route increased 5.4 percent. This route comprised 11.1 percent of total ridership. This route carried 670,688 vehicles and 1,989,125 foot passengers, for a combined total of 2,659,813 passengers.

Of note, WSF’s two smallest routes saw the largest increases. Ridership on the Point Defiance/Tahlequah route increased by 9 percent and Port Townsend/Coupeville ridership increased 8.9 percent over the previous year. The Seattle/Bainbridge route carried the most total riders, 6.3 million people. The Mukilteo/Clinton route to south Whidbey Island carried 2.2 million vehicles, more than any other route. or resided in the Archdiocese of Seattle. While locations of known assignments or residences were included, the archdiocese said it does not mean to infer that allegations of abuse exist at each place. The archdiocese said the list was compiled through a process that included an independent outside consultant and members of the Archdiocesan Review Board. The Seattle Times reported the independent investigator, a former FBI agent, was hired in early 2014. Of the 77 individuals who have been accused or determined to be culpable, an unnamed number have admitted to the sexual abuse. The list includes 30 archdiocese and 16 religious priests, 14 religious brothers, one religious sister, two deacons and 14 priests from other dioceses, according to the Seattle Times article.

Six archdiocesan priests who served in Bremerton churches also were listed. They include: Barry Ashwell, who served at Our Lady Star of the Sea from 1971-1975; Edward Boyle, Holy Trinity from 1968-1976; Michael Hays, Holy Trinity from 1976-1980 and Our Lady Star of the Sea, 1982-1984; Dennis Kemp, Our Lady Star of the Sea, 1976-1978; James Knelleken, Holy Trinity, 1964-1968; and William Quick, Our Lady Star of the Sea, 1939-1940. Ashwell and Hays have been “laicized,” or removed from the priesthood. Kemp currently is in “permanent prayer and penance” status, a program for priests who are known sexual abusers. Boyle, Knelleken and Quick are deceased. For more information, visit seattlearchdio cese.org/Assets/SEP/7043_DisclosureList.pdf.

Wet road, speed cause crash POULSBO — Two Bremerton residents escaped injury after their SUV was struck by another vehicle on State Route 3 Jan. 16. The incident began when 25-year-old Bainbridge Island man drove his 1991 Lexus through standing water while traveling north on State Route 3 at 2:54 p.m. The Lexus went out of control just south of the intersection with State Route 305 and crashed into a northbound 2001 Chevrolet Suburban that was towing a travel trailer. The Suburban and trailer then spun out of control, and the trailer came to rest on its side. No one was injured in the crash, but SR3 was

blocked for around 90 minutes. The Suburban was driven by a 58-year-old Bremerton man. With him was a 60-year-old female passenger, also of Bremerton. The man was wearing his seat belt, but the report does not say if his passenger was wearing one. The driver of the Lexus also had a passenger. Both occupants of the Lexus were wearing their seat belts. The Lexus and Suburban were towed from the scene. The trailer was totaled. WSP stated the driver of the Lexus would be charged with driving too fast for conditions.

POULSBO — Poulsbo City Prosecutor Kylie Purves has resigned to accept a position with the Bremerton City Attorney’s office. The Bremerton city attorney’s office confirmed she will serve as assistant city attorney. Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson, who was interviewing candidates for city prosecutor Jan. 15, said Purves has agreed to stay on until a new prosecutor is hired. In Poulsbo, Purves is paid $88,000

Her Bremerton salary was not available. “It’s a great opportunity for her to expand her career,” Erickson said of Purves. “She did a great job of handling the risk assessment and claims process, and having prosecution services in house rather by outside contract has given our police and the mayor’s office much better support. Since she’s been city prosecutor, we’ve been litigation free. She’s saved us a lot of money.” Poulsbo human resources director Deanna Kingery said Jan. 15 “we

Bruce James Derry

Bruce James Derry arrived in this world on Feb. 9, 1948, to Leroy and Helen Derry in Norfolk, Virginia. He took his journey on Jan. 14, 2016, at the age of 67. Bruce’s father was an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy who worked his way through the ranks during WWII to become a Lieutenant Commander. When Bruce was a child, the Derry family traveled extensively in Europe. Bruce was taught oldschool navigation by his father, and could still step outside any evening and identify all the constellations and stars by name. Bruce kept a picture of his father’s flagship, “USS SARATOGA,” in a prominent place at home. Bruce respected and loved his dad dearly and often said he’d have been a better man had his father just lived a little longer. After being stationed in New York, Maryland, Connecticut and California, the family was ordered to Bangor, Washington, where Bruce’s Dad retired. Bruce graduated in 1966 from Central Kitsap High School, where he was an excellent baseball and football player. A few months after graduation, he joined the U.S. Army. He was sent to the Defense Language Institute in the Presidio of Monterey,

California, where he graduated with a Master’s degree in the Chinese Mandarin Language. He was then stationed in Thailand near the Laos and Cambodia borders. Bruce often reminisced about his life in Thailand when these cold Okanogan winters arrived, and always said how easier it was to live in a warm climate. He wondered whatever happened to his water buffalo, “Rooney.” Bruce said his only regret in life was that he didn’t remain in Thailand. Bruce had many occupations; he hoed sugar beets in southern California, worked the pear sheds in Oregon, pulled green chain in Port Ludlow, was a bouncer at the Mountain Time tavern, a rigger on Harbor Island and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, handyman and landscaper, built recreational campers in Oroville and worked at Regal Fruit, Oro and Gold digger sheds in varied capacities. Bruce was also a guard at Keyport and Indian Island. His favorite job of all was working on the weed crew for the USFS. He considered it a challenge to locate one musk thistle in the thousands of acres of forest. Bruce’s main motivation was fishing. He was proud that he had been skunked on just about every river in Oregon and Washington. He had his successes too, and in all probability, steelhead and trout populations will increase with his passing. Bruce also enjoyed tying intricate knots used by sailors back in the days of clipper ships. It drove him crazy to see tangled rope or untied shoes. Bruce was a good man, slow to anger, but fierce when roused. He was a defender of the underdogs, always picked up hitchhikers and fed strays. He never passed judgement on anyone and respected all cultures and beliefs. At Bruce’s request, no services will be held. He is survived by his best friend of 36 years and wife Kathryn (Kaye) Chester. Bergh Funeral Service and Crematory in care of arrangements.

“Education is knowledge. Knowledge is power.”

folks and white folks of good will. It will be accomplished by persons who have the courage to put an end to suffering on others. It will be done by rejecting the racism, materialism and violence that has characterized western civilization. And especially by working toward a world of brotherhood, cooperation and peace.” Rice said it was difficult to serve as an elected official in the world today “because common sense and reason is not always what everybody wants. We want righteous indignation. Sometimes indignation is important, but it’s not always right.” Instead of waiting for a charismatic leader to show the way, Rice said, it

was up to each person to take steps forward. “Each one of you needs to define that thing you can do well for others … the journey starts with one step. Today is your step for that march, for that degree, for that … opportunity that makes a difference.” Olympic College student Shannon Turner also spoke at the event. He plans on finishing his associates degree in the summer, and will then work on his bachelors. His message: That education was the key to “completing” King’s dream. Turner recalled a visit to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. “It empowered me. It made me

realize that, as a proud black man and a father, that it was up to me to complete my dream so that I could show my children and my community that quitting is not an option.” “As Americans, education is one of our keys to reach that goal of completion. It gives us that power to go out and change the world. It makes others recognize that as Americans we will continue to strive and make this a better nation.” “By educating ourselves we give ourselves the power to go out and move mountains, to become CEOs, professors, senators and even president of the United States. Education is knowledge. Knowledge is power.”

with shooting the only enemy plane out of the sky at Ewa. According to Hoffmann, the Commandant of the Marine Corps wrote the base colonel wanting to find who shot the plane down. A board inquiry was held and it was determined through interviews and investigation that Rocky and his crew were the ones responsible. “Plus my comment, ‘Do you want to live forever?’ prompted a field promotion,” Hoffmann explained. Hoffmann went to serve in the South Pacific for three years after leaving Pearl Harbor. His squadron was divided into three groups and they were sent to Midway, Wake Island and Palmyra. “I went to Palmyra. The ones that were sent to Wake Island — none of them came back.” When asked if he lost any friends on Wake Island, he paused and said quietly, “I was close to one Marine in particular. I don’t want to go into that.” While serving in the South Pacific, Hoffmann applied to Officer’s Training School. He was then sent back to Pearl Harbor. “The Sergeant Major of the base greeted me and said, ‘Rocky, I want you to get cleaned up. Tomorrow morning you go into the colonel’s office. They’re gonna swear you in as a 2nd Lieutenant.’ I was sent back to the states to go to OTS. Years later, here in Bremerton, I noted a brief comment in a newspaper that the Sgt. Maj. was retiring. I took him to lunch, which I did several times. On one occasion I asked, ‘Why did you make me a 2nd Lt.?’ ” Hoffmann pauses and smiles. “He told me, ‘What you did on Dec. 7 didn’t hurt you any.’” Hoffmann became an

officer on Jan. 1, 1942. One little known detail is that Hoffmann attended night school for seven years – gaining proficiency in Gregg shorthand. “Once the Marines knew that, they made me a court reporter. I even got ready to take the test for Federal Court.” The Marines Corps remains the only U.S. armed forces service branch to employ court reporters. Hoffmann frequently starts his sentences with, “This isn’t very interesting,” or, “I don’t know if you want to know this.” When asked to remember specifics, he pauses, puts his head down, and with his right hand raised and shaking, places it back down gently on the arm of his couch. Then a quiet stream of fascinating details burst forth. Major Hoffmann married Marion Hollister in Montecito, California, in 1943. “I thought I was stationed in Santa Barbara,” he explains. “I told my commanding officer that I would just get engaged if I was shipping out and married if I wasn’t. Well, I got married and two weeks later I had orders to leave,” Hoffmann remembered. “We had a large wedding in a beautiful church.” Rocky and Marion were married for 62 years. He pulls out some pictures in his wallet. One black and white photo shows two young adults kissing on the beach in Santa Barbara. “And here’s one of me and my girl getting acquainted . . . we got married one month later,” he says with a laugh. “I keep that one in my wallet. We don’t need to show anyone that picture.” The Hoffmann family grew to include three children: two sons,

Mark and Eric, born in 1944 and 1945, respectively, in Santa Barbara. A daughter, Denise, was born in Seattle a few years after that. Hoffman now has seven grandchildren and, “No great-grandkids yet.” Mark currently resides in Bremerton and Eric in Iowa. Daughter Denise lives in Australia. “I’m a strong believer in the military and the reserves,” he says. “It’s good to always maintain a state of readiness in case of an attack. I don’t know if you want to know this, but I am opposed to the troops sent over to Afghanistan. If anyone wants to have a civil war, then let ‘em.” What are Hoffmann’s fondest memories as a Marine? “It’s hard to say,” he says quietly. “When I was promoted to Major — actually, I was very pleased to learn I was one of the Marines who shot down a fighter plane. Once a Marine, always a Marine.” Hoffmann doesn’t keep in touch with other Pearl Harbor survivors, saying, “No, there’s only a few left in the county.” He says that a good candidate for the military completes training and lives up to the oath to defend the country. “I spent a total of 45 years in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve.” Hoffmann retired in 1978. “Military is very important to me and my life. I was proud to be a Marine. I had a good background so I could retire as a Major. I have many fond memories of my travels.” The origin of the nickname Rocky proves an interesting tale. Reluctant to give a direct quote, he thought a bit and then revealed that it involved

an active duty Marine making disparaging remarks about Marine Reservists. After several requests by Hoffmann (at the time a Marine Reserve) to refrain from continuing with the cutting comments, and the failure of the active duty Marine to do so, Hoffmann earned the nickname Rocky after knocking the offender out cold. His commander dragged him outside and told him, “None of my Marines is gonna go around with the name Maynard. From now on, you’re Rocky.” And it stuck with him from that day on. Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Ewa was chosen because it had an ideal peacetime air training environment and was completed in early 1941. Upon the groundbreaking of the MCAS, plans were already in the works for an expansion of the naval aviation facilities at Barbers Point. According to Naval Air Museum Barbers Point, construction of an airfield west of Ewa began in November 1941 but was suspended temporarily after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Construction crews were diverted to quickly complete Ewa. Hoffmann is an eyewitness to the exact moment that the United States entered World War II. Although most of the attack was focused on Pearl Harbor, the MCAS sustained enormous damage. Ewa was the first installation hit during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The advent of the Korean War See full meant that MCAS Ewa experienced story on the website another surge in activity.

“(The selection process) is based on what the theme is for any given year, and how closely a nominee fits that theme,” Daubert said. “There have been nominees put forth for one year that have not been honored, but have given inspiration for the next year’s theme and been honored that following year.” She added that Moore Jackson “makes certain all nominations are observed in one way or another, be it receiving the award, or through inspiration for years that follow.” Daubert said that the ceremony itself grows every year, originating as

a daytime event that now includes a red carpet, dinner, a reception and entertainment. This year, the entertainment includes music, dance, poetry and more. “It’s a show as far as the event is concerned,” Daubert said. “It’s going to be incredible this year.” She said that the last couple years have seen around 500 people attending the event, but “every year, it’s grown.” “I really think that it’s important that young people, at least the community at large, are able to see people of color in our community who are

really working to enhance not just their own African American community, but their whole community,” Daubert said. “We believe that those are are nominated are valuable members of their respective communities, and deserve to be recognized for their contributions. Our event is only five years old. We intend to continue to honor our leaders for years to come.” For more information about the event, visit their Facebook page at on.fb.me/1nwekR3. Tickets can be purchased at brownpapertickets. com.

realized what was happening.” It still required a visual confirmation to fully comprehend the situation in its entirety. “It really tipped us all off when we saw the big red meatball on the wing of the plane.” How do the Marines train its men to react to enemy fire? “You are trained to take cover and the important thing to do was to take cover – only there was no cover. There was a clump of trees so I headed there. On the road outside the trees there was a group of Marines, standing in the middle of the road. They said, ‘Sergeant, we don’t know what to do,’ so I said, ‘Ok, follow me.’ I turned and headed through some brush to the trees. I got halfway there and looked back. They were still standing there. They hadn’t moved. “I shouted an old Marine phrase from 1918, ‘Follow me, you can’t live forever!’That worked. They followed me.” [NOTE: The actual saying is, “Come on, you sons of bitches – do you want to live forever?” (Attributed to Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly, USMC, Belleau Wood, June 1918.)] “I returned to my barracks and got my rifle, a 1917 Springfield. We had no automatic weapons,” Hoffmann said, knowing it was important to organize the Marines into a group. “There were seven of us and we formed a firing squad. We were firing at Zeros that were flying low. One of them crashed in a cane field just outside the station.” Hoffmann and his crew of Marines were credited

the honorees. This year’s theme is “Beyond the Pulpit,” to honor church leaders who have “gone beyond the church” to help improve their communities. Past years’ themes have included teachers of the year, founders (of businesses, nonprofits and more) and other things. The process of choosing an honoree takes about a month, Daubert said, from nomination to selection by Moore Jackson.

Curbside appeal: **** Situated on the water right across the channel from the west side of Bainbridge Island, this beautiful location never fails to charm. Dawns are especially spectacular.

Amenities within walking distance: ***

Most of the basic necessities are within a five-minute walk: a convenience store; delicatessen; meeting areas, and outdoor recreation areas including a dog park, pavilion and lighthouse. The marina’s Host Boat offers hotelstyle concierge services. While the Host Boat has an advanced-practice RN aboard for minor emergencies, there are no clinics within walking distance, which is why the site only earns three stars.

Lifestyle: ****

This is a working marina where people are inclined to pitch in and help one another. Unlike some private “McYacht” marinas, there is a healthy mix of work boats and recreational vessels. “The growl of the fishing fleet starting up in the morning is my favorite alarm clock,” says one old-timer.

Security: **

Accessibility: ****

The breakwater docks and inner marina have passcoded gates that are locked at night and have a nighttime security guard and limited video surveillance. Security has not been a problem in the past, but there have recently been a number of minor thefts and vandalism. Officials say additional security cameras are being installed.

The docks and buildings are handicapped accessible and the most of the docks feature a nonslip grating that is vastly superior to the slippery wooden docks found at some marinas. A “yellow cab” is available to transport people and heavy items from the docks to the marina buildings or parks.

Prepping our pets for winter I

am a true Pacific Northwesterner; I do not like weather that cannot be described as “mild.” Too hot, too cold, too windy, no thank you! I will happily go trudging down a trail in the rain on a 50-degree day, but the moment I see a snowflake fall, I lock myself indoors. After being caught off guard by the first windstorm of the season, I am determined to prepare my home and my family for what the winter might bring. That means prepping my pets for winter and the dangers the season can present. When the temperature plummets, don’t forget about your Fidos and felines. Proper housing is essential for your pet’s well-being. “This time of year, our animal control officers receive several calls for animals who are left outside at all times of the day and with no shelter,” said Chase Connolly, Kitsap Animal Control manager

PETS & PEOPLE By REBEKAH JOHNSON

at Kitsap Humane Society. Just because dogs and cats have fur does not mean that our pets are immune to the threat of cold weather. When fur gets wet, it compromises the fur’s ability to insulate your pet. Also — much like a human’s nose, fingers and toes — a pet’s paws, nose and ears become susceptible to injury or frostbite in freezing temperatures. If you have a pet who loves to explore the yard, be aware of the temperature and limit your pet’s time outside during the winter. Possibly you have a stubborn dog who won’t go outside in the cold weather to go potty. A question we are often asked at Kitsap Humane Society is how to help pets go outside to relieve themselves during the winter months. We recommend putting straw down on a

Rebekah Johnson / Kitsap Humane Society section or path of your yard over snow or mud so your picky dog’s paws don’t get wet and cold. Have an outdoor dog or cat? Ensure that they have proper shelter; Kitsap

County Code requires pet owners to provide “adequate shelter” for pets. This means providing outdoor animals draft-free housing that is dry, warm and they can freely turn around in. Lay down straw for your pets to help keep

FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2016 them warm and check on them often to ensure they are dry, well-fed and have plenty of water. Don’t just take my word on the importance of prepping your pets for the winter; keep in mind you are obligated by law to provide warm and dry housing for your four-legged friends. Our animal control officers are very nice people, but I am sure you would rather not have them knocking on your door with a citation in hand this year. Cold weather is not the only danger to your pet during the winter months. Your garage potentially holds several dangerous substances that can endanger the lives of pets. Coming home and realizing a pet has gotten their nose into a potentially toxic substance is terrible (and can lead to a very costly vet bill). I know this from personal experience. Our furry friends are often drawn to sweet substances; antifreeze can be irresistible, and deadly, to pets. Store antifreeze with the lid tightly secured and away from your pets and make sure your car is not leaking antifreeze. It takes a very small amount to make a pet sick; simply licking anti-freeze off of

their paws can make pets sick. Last, but not least, a danger to our pets many never consider is road salt and other ice-melting products. Road salt is recognized as a toxic substance and can cause your pet to suffer from inflammation and irritation. Road salt can irritate and crack a pet’s paws and, when ingested through licking, can also inflame the mouth and digestive system. If your pet walks on road salt, immediately wash your pet’s paws off and look into environmentally friendly ice-melting substances to help treat your own property. My family uses pet-friendly EcoTraction, but there are many other products out there. Don’t let all these potential dangers to your pet give you the winter woes. Once you and your pets are prepared for the winter, you and your family should be able to enjoy the frosty mornings and cool evenings together in a safe and happy home. Happy Mew Year! — Rebekah Johnson is Kitsap Humane Society’s events and outreach manager. Contact her at rjohn son@kitsap-humane.org.

Environmental stewardship: **** Brownsville has been a leader in environmental stewardship for a quarter century and enjoys Clean Marina and EnviroStar ratings. It recently became the first marina in the state to install docks and finger piers made of recycled aluminum and plastic.

Affordability: ****

This may be one of the best bargains on the peninsula. The monthly fee for a 55-foot boat is about $350-$400 a month. This includes trash, electricity, water, use of the recreation areas, and free Wi-Fi. Propane, fuel, and the wastewater pumpout boat cost extra. The downside to this is a long waiting list for larger boats. Brownsville Marina: “A champagne lifestyle on a beer budget.”

Children and their accompanying grownups can join Kitsap Beach Naturalists as they shine a light on the amazing sea life that flourishes in the dark winter waters. Other activities include exploring with an underwater TV camera, and scuba divers bringing up underwater creatures to see and touch. Children younger than 12 are encouraged to

wear life jackets; a limited number of life jackets will be available for loan. Hot drinks and fresh cookies will be served in the Yacht Club’s clubhouse. Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather. Pier Peer is one of the educational and environmental efforts supported by the Port of Brownsville and its tenant organizations, the Brownsville Yacht Club and the Kitsap Maritime Heritage Foundation. — Dr. Terryl Asla lives aboard a 55-foot houseboat at the Brownsville Marina. Behind the sets up two missions. scene, fine-tune details, The first challenge lies in determining what is “real” invite power players in and make room for angels. and what is “illusion” in Listen, really listen, to our beliefs about homes, your close buddies and community, country, and spouse. Don’t cherry pick world. Beliefs of all kinds their comments. They see — religious, political, you! Then, champion your familial, even about ourselves — and the meaning cause. Pisces, baby, take in our lives come under serious scrutiny. Which beliefs move us forward as a society, and which ones simply feel good spouting off but tear us apart? In other words, where’s the cheese? Where’s the beef? And really, you’re going down that tunnel again? There are no easy prizes in 2016, as illustrated by the unclaimed Powerball jackpot! Our second mission is “Do what works” so the planets in Earth signs can reward us. Confusion about what does and doesn’t work creates chaos throughout the year on all levels of society. Your ship comes in when you dot the “i”s, cross the “t”s, review, revise, and reconsider. The idea of measuring twice and cutting once would be well applied in 2016. Or said another way, “Don’t do what doesn’t work!” The full moon in Leo with Sun in Aquarius (5:45 p.m. PST Jan. 23) challenges us to come together for humanitarian purposes rather than being a rock star on our own. At the beginning of the Age of Aquarius, the shadow side of Leo comes to light as self-aggrandizement — entertainment at best.
