Anacortes Prosthetics and Orthotics in Anacortes is improving the lives of disabled veterans.

Since opening in the spring of 2015, the interaction and growth with patients in the community has been beyond expectations, she said. Don Morton, an amputee and medically retired Army infantry captain, is one such individual who is getting the care he needs thanks to Chase. Morton lost his right leg in Vietnam.

Morton said he met Chase when she was working in Mount Vernon, prior to her opening up shop in Anacortes. “I thought I had it made when I only had to drive 30 miles to get the care I needed,” said Morton. “Now I only have to drive a mile.” Morton talked about the inconvenience of having to make multiple trips to Seattle

in order to go to the VA hospital. Whenever it was time to get a new leg, it could take as many as 12 to 15 trips to Seattle to complete the process. Now Morton says it’s a one-stop shop for him to be able to get all the adjustments he needs in Anacortes. CONTINUED PAGE 3

Prosthetics FROM PAGE 2 Beyond the convenience of the Anacortes business, Morton said breakthroughs in technology also improved his quality of life. “I used to not be able to walk in high winds because my leg would blow backward at the knee,” he said. Morton said he can now walk more confidently and without fear of falling down, which is more of a concern as he ages. Morton added that he would gladly help and encourage new amputees to go through the “torturous” process of receiving a limb, as opposed to being confined to a wheel chair for the rest of their lives.

Chase explained that she not only enjoys working with the latest innovations in material such as carbon fiber but also the chance to be around amputees who have a very different outlook on life than the average person. “It’s a reality check for me,” said Chase. “When you think you’re having a bad day and you see amputees being so positive, it really puts life into perspective real fast.” Chase’s business goes beyond prosthetics and orthotics. She offers diabetic shoes. They are important for individuals with diabetic complications with their feet to prevent potential situations that lead to amputations.

brace support to assist healing of a fractured bone or a spinal brace to support a weakened or injured back.

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the awarding of 12 contracts between five firms totaling $6.8 billion to improve the Medical Disability Examination process (Compensation and Pension or Comp and Pen Examinations) for veterans.

“This is a very real reality for many people. If we can prevent anyone from losing a limb, we are in,” said Chase. Chase said it is such a great feeling when someone gets his or her new prosthetic and starts walking. “Everyone just starts crying,” she said. Chase commented that she feels very honored to be working with veterans and improving their quality of life. “I don’t have great legs,” Chase said. “I make them.”

She also builds support structures. That may be a carbon fiber device to stabilize an otherwise unstable ankle, a

The awards are intended to reduce veterans’ wait times for examinations for serviceconnected benefits, thereby providing faster claims decisions in a more efficient and streamlined way.

“This is good news for veterans who are waiting for VA to determine whether a condition can be considered serviceconnected,” said VA Secretary Robert A. McDonald. “For these veterans, we want the process to be smoother — from beginning to end. When we announced the MyVA initiative in 2014 to improve veterans’ experience with VA, that meant look-

InsIde Veteran’s Day program planned at OH high school By MICHAEL WATKINS

mwatkins@whidbeynewsgroup.com

The annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Oak Harbor may be cancelled, but veterans will still be honored thanks to the Oak Harbor Navy League. The Navy League will con-

duct its yearly Veteran’s Day Program at the Oak Harbor High School, according to Steve Bristow, the league’s president. The event will take place on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to

commemorate the original Armistice Day agreement marking the end of World War I in 1918. Kent Peckenpaugh, event organizer, said this will be the 12th year of the community-wide event, which is also

sponsored by the Oak Harbor Area Council as well the Navy League. Peckenpaugh said communities across the United States honor those who have served our country, under the broad theme of “Honoring our

Nation’s Heroes.” This year’s ceremony will feature musical performances by the Oak Harbor High School Harbor Singers and the Oak Harbor High School Jazz Band. The Oak Harbor High School NJROTC Color Guard will present the colors as they have for many years. The guest speaker will be U.S. Navy Capt. Brett Mietus, the commodore of

Patrol-Reconnaissance Wing Ten. A flag passing ceremony and singing of the National Anthem will be performed by active duty members stationed at NAS Whidbey. Regency on Whidbey in Oak Harbor will also be having its own ceremony starting at 12:30 and be giving out more than 50 letters of appreciation to their resident veterans.

Center wins 2nd energy competition Employees from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Fleet and Family Readiness, Morale Welfare and Recreation, Personal Property, Housing Referral, Disabled Veterans of America and the VA collaborated on efforts to reduce energy consumption at the base’s Nor’Wester facility during the third quarter of fiscal year 2016. Those efforts led to a 30 percent reduction in energy consumption from the previous year according to Chris Taylor, the base energy manager. The selection of the Nor’Wester as

the recipient of the third quarter competition resulted in the team earning a $10,000 check for facility improvements. As a result, for the year to date, utility costs are down by $53,000 on track to save over $60,000 this year. With a fixed budget, money not spent on utilities goes directly to support Sailors and Sailor families. As the winning command, the FFR received a check for $10,000 to be applied for building improvements, further increasing their ability to support the troops.
