If you're thinking about a trip to Whidbey, there's something you should know: visitors are highly susceptible to falling in love with this island paradise. Whether you're doing holiday shopping in Oak Harbor, welcoming in the new year by hopping into Puget Sound during Freeland’s Polar Bear Plunge, sleuthing through clues during Langley’s Mystery Weekend in February or celebrating the bounty of the seas in Coupeville during the Penn Cove Musselfest, you'll find Whidbey charming, rural and romantic. Rich history, creative atmosphere and unparalleled natural beauty are all found here, and each community has a distinct character that offers a little something for everyone. Oak Harbor, a vibrant community, offers everything from great shopping and dining to military history and golf. It is the largest city on Whidbey and is a great base for exploring the North End. Coupeville is a quiet town by comparison. It still reflects the character of a frontier seaport when Puget Sound was first settled. Yet, it offers both great food and shopping. It's also situated within Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, a one-of-a-kind national treasure that offers visitors a rare glimpse of the past. Greenbank is another lovely locale, and home to the historic Greenbank Farm. It's a place for long walks or learning about sustainable energy. Eat some of the tastiest pie you’ll ever have at Whidbey Pies and stroll through the small shops and galleries. Nestled between Holmes Harbor and Mutiny Bay, Freeland is an active community and South Whidbey's commercial hub. Downtown offers shopping and dining all within walking distance. Freeland also offers some of the finest beaches on

the island, such as Double Bluff Beach Park (pictured above). Langley, also known as the Village by the Sea, is a charming community home to inns and restaurants of national recognition. There's also a lot to do: wander through galleries and shops, watch master glass blowers at work, visit the Langley Whale Center or observe sea life in person from a kayak. Rub elbows with artists, winemakers and coffee roasters and shop, shop, shop. Finally, Clinton is the gateway to Whidbey Island for many visitors. It is the landing for one of two ferry routes serving the island. Host to a wonderful artist community, Clinton also offers lovely parks, beaches and an innovative business community. Located at the heart of Puget Sound, just northwest of Seattle and southwest of the San Juans, a Whidbey Island getaway is closer than you think, and getting here is half the fun. Whether you’re crossing breathtaking Deception Pass Bridge or arriving by ferry from Mukilteo, the island is about one hour from the heart of Seattle. From the Olympic Peninsula, Whidbey is only a 30-minute ferry ride from Port Townsend. A little known fact about Whidbey Island that should not go unmentioned — situated in the rain shadow of the Olympics, parts of the island receive less than half the average rainfall of Seattle. This winter, leave the umbrella at home and stroll the county’s beaches, hike the trails, explore charming stores, eat locally grown food, sample wine and watch a show produced by one of our many performing arts companies. By the time you leave, you’ll know why Whidbey Island is one of the gems of Western Washington.

ACCOMMODATIONS
W
hether it be for Langley’s bunnies, the scenic view of Deception Pass, or the sites and serenity of Ebey’s Landing, there are plenty of reasons to visit Whidbey Island. If visitors plan to make the favorite getaway more than a temporary luxury, options for lodging are plentiful. Starting at the island’s most southerly tip in Clinton, visitors can stay at the Whidbey Island Vacation House (425-802-0868, www.whidbeyvacationhouse.com) with a view of the Clinton-to-Mukilteo ferry route. Just up the road is the Sweetwater Cottage (360341-1604). There is also the Hummingbird’s Nest, which can be rented through AirBnB or by calling 425-502-2352, and the Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast which is situated on 2.5 acres of pasture, garden and orchard. The B&B offers four garden-themed suites for guests, each of which has its own fireplace and private entrances. If your travels take you to Langley, affectionately known as the Village by the Sea, there are several options for lodging in this quiet, artsy town. One in particular, the Inn at Langley
(360-221-3033, www.innatlangley.com), offers both a glimpse of what it’s like to live in the community but also provides a stunning view of Saratoga Passage. The upscale waterfront hotel is considered to be among the top-500 in the world, according to Travel & Leisure. Matt Costello, general manager, co-owner and chef, said that while the inn is not the cheapest on the South End, it delivers an experience that allows visitors to immerse themselves in activities in Langley. He said they give out free movie tickets to the Clyde Theatre, a historic venue for moviegoers that is located nearby, as well as free yoga, pilates and discounts with a kayaking company. “We want people to see what Langley has to offer,” Costello said. “It sort of shows the whole community. It’s not just about us.” “Rack rates” are between $345-360, depending on the time of year, he said. Other places to stay include the Boatyard Inn (360-221-5120), which is located near the Langley Marina and has luxe accommodations with water views, the Saratoga Inn (360-221-5801) and the Country Cottage of Langley Bed and Breakfast (360-221-8709). SHOP WHIDBEY
A
long with fair weather and mild climes, Whidbey offers a truly "island" shopping experience. Its charming waterfront towns are
home to a host of eclectic businesses that are as rich in character as they are in charm. Langley, Coupeville, Oak Harbor — each have shopping districts where residents can get lost browsing items that range from locally made island knickknacks and impressive art to name-brand apparel and modern home furnishings.
OAK HARBOR
For those who make their way onto the island via Deception Pass, your first stop should be in Oak Harbor. Whidbey’s largest city, it’s a booming commercial enterprise that offers big-box stores and small businesses alike — a little something for everyone. Just off the beaten path is the city’s historic downtown shopping district on Pioneer Way. Recently redone, the area features a collection of shops and merchants.
At The Jewelry Gallery one can find an assortment of gems sure to bring a sparkle to any woman’s eye. Just Because, a consignment store, contains everything from furniture to Seahawks apparel. Shoppers will also find portrait photography by local photographer Sean Callahan. For younger customers, Gizmo’s Skate Shop sells decks, wheels, trucks, bearings, stickers, cloths, shoes and more. It’s a one-stop-shop for all your skateboarding needs. Farther down the street is the Garry Oak Gallery, which features local artists’ collections of wood works, pottery and paintings. Also on Pioneer Way is Whidbey Wild Bird, which offers a variety of products such as birdseed and bird feeders to attract beautiful birds to your backyard. And for those with a sweet tooth, swing by
Popsies, the shop that “inspires people of all ages to become a kid in a candy store again.” Owner Kay Coolidge’s caramel popcorn is a community favorite. The city offers a host of other great shops outside the historic shopping district as well, from Gerald's Jewelry on N.E. Midway Blvd. and Whidbey Jeweler on S.W. Barlow to an array of corporate retailers.
COUPEVILLE
About 15 minutes south, visitors will roll into Coupeville, Whidbey Island’s historic heartbeat. One of Washington’s few remaining “towns,” this small community is nestled within Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, which is a unit of the national park system. This waterfront town is home to century-old buildings, a museum and enough small-town shops to keep shoppers browsing SEE SHOPPING, PAGE 13

FREELAND
Freeland is the commercial hub of South Whidbey, complete with a large grocery store, retail shops and merchandise to buy. For the technology consumers, be sure to explore Whidbey Telecom’s technology store, located in the phone company’s customer experi-
ence center on Main Street. The store has modern gadgets for all your digital needs. On the other side of the building are the WiFire Café, offering a selection of food, and Webb's Department store, where you can find all the necessary clothing to bundle up for the winter. Freeland also offers a number of small stores and an antique mall, which sell everything from apparel to tea. There are thrift stores that support local nonprofits such as the island’s animal shelter program, Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation. The area is also home to Napa Auto Parts and Whidbeytronics, a former Radio Shack dealer.

WINTERONWHIDBEY
As the southernmost gateway to Whidbey Island, this ferry town should not be passed by. The community has two major shopping areas, a small collection of businesses that can be found right off the ferry and Ken’s Korner, a commercial center a few miles north. In Clinton proper, MAKE Whidbey is a one-of-a-kind coffee shop that offers a retail selection of stunning woodworks made by the owners and other assorted gift items. Next door is Cadée Distillery, a Whidbey operation that produces and sells award-winning spirits. Located near Ken’s Korner is Sherren’s Glassworks, which features orca whale glass art, as well as garden art, wind chimes, fused plates and bowls, night lights and dichroic jewelry. Across the street from the shopping center is North Star Trading Company, which offers premium sheepskin slippers that are guaranteed to last for years and perfect for bundling up for the cold winter.

EAT ON WHIDBEY
NORTH WHIDBEY
Starting in Oak Harbor, Seabolt’s Smokehouse Fresh Seafood & Restaurant is a familyowned local favorite that’s served the community for 30 years. Located on Highway 20, the eatery is best known for its smoked salmon, but is also renowned for its clam chowder and fish and chips. Oak Harbor is home to multiple quality Asian food digs, including Jeda’s Thai Kitchen on Cabot Drive. Come here to satisfy your craving for Thai curries, pad thai and pad see ew. There is also Tamayo’s (800 SE Pioneer Way), an eatery serving up a mixture of Vietnamese and Laos plates, including Lao curry noodles. Oak Harbor is also home to some of Whidbey’s best Mexican food. El Cazador (32195 Highway 20) boasts a selection of classics such as enchiladas, fajitas and shrimp dishes. There is also a full bar and a south-of-the-border motif to boot. Jumbo Burrito (31780 Highway 20 Suite 2) offers fare for reasonable prices, including two dollar tacos and burritos that would make the name proud. The BBQ Joint (601 NE Midway Boule-
vard) brings the flavors of the South to North Whidbey diners. The local favorite boasts Southern hospitality and “real sweet tea.” They also offer Southern classics such as ribs, brisket and pulled pork, of course. Other g r e a t places to chow down include Zorba’s (32955 Highway 20), which offers hearty servings of mediterranean food, Louie-G’s New York Style Pizza (31359 Highway 20) if you’re craving a slice, and Flyers Restaurant & Brewery (32295 Highway 20). And if you’re hungry for fine dining, head downtown to the shopping district on Pioneer Way and Fraser’s Gourmet Hideaway on SE Dock Street.

At Fraser's you’ll find succulent steaks, shellfish and wine flights. It’s perfect for couples looking for a romantic evening out and food to remember. Standards are high at China City as well. The Chinese fare is phenomenal, but this is upscale eats in a casual environment. The restaurant has locations in Oak Harbor and on the South End in Freeland.
CENTRAL WHIDBEY
In Coupeville, Oystercatcher (901 Grace Street NW) is another local favorite that has called Central Whidbey home since 1998. A rotating menu keeps diners on their toes, and vegetarians and vegans can be comfortable knowing they will have options upon walking through the door. Christopher’s on Whidbey (103 NW Coveland Street) is a must for those looking for a fine dining experience. Start off with a heap of Penn Cove mussels (the mussels don’t have to travel far!) and top it off with pasta or a pork tenderloin. Ciao (701 Main Street N.) serves up Neapolitan-style pizza and other Southern Italian fare in a contemporary restaurant atmosphere. Toby’s Tavern (8 Front Street NE) boasts casual pub bites and brews in a historic shoreline building. Knead & Feed Restaurant (4 Front Street NW) offers up some of Coupeville’s best breakfast and lunch. Expect products from the bakery inside, scrambles and hearty sandwiches in case you’re caught in between breakfast and lunch. Another good sandwich option, Bayleaf (101 NW Coveland Street) is stocked with breads, cheese and sandwiches in their deli. On the more upscale side of things, Front Street Grill offers new American surf ’n’ turf, a variety of mussel dishes and a wonderful view of Penn Cove. To satisfy a craving for Asian food, Pra Nakorn (602 N. Main Street) offers all the classic dishes, like satay and pad thai, from the kitchen of a Victorian home. Head down south to Greenbank Farm, where one can follow the fresh baked smells that lead to Whidbey Pies (765 Wonn Road).

WINES & SPIRITS The winter season is magical on Whidbey Island. There’s a chill in the air. The wine dark sea churns, but pebbly beaches and rural landscapes seem especially hushed and unexplored. The world is calm. Distinct from the bustle of the summer tourist season, wintertime is a delightful time to explore Whidbey Island’s small, family wineries and craft distilleries. “It’s actually a really wonderful time,” said Karen Krug, a winemaker who owns Spoiled Dog Winery with her husband. “We’re not as busy and we have more time to talk to people.” Whidbey Island wineries and a couple of small distilleries are, for the most part, scattered around the southern end of the island. But several brew pubs and some fantastic wine shops are located up and down the long, skinny island. Each winery has its own ambiance. Spoiled Dog focuses on the countryside atmosphere; the Krugs even have cows that love to eat grape skins and seeds left over from pressing. Ott & Murphy Wines, located in the town of Langley, features live music and a relaxed atmosphere. Useless Bay Wines
has a tasting room overlooking the water on First Street in Langley. Blooms Winery’s tasting room is inside the historic Bayview Corner store. Comforts of Whidbey is on a family farm, features a large vineyard and has a tasting room overlooking Saratoga Passage. Dancing Fish WINERY WINERY WINERY

WINES, FROM PAGE 17
Winery has picnic tables under a centuryold apple tree with views of the vineyards. One of the great things about wineries on Whidbey Island is the lack of snobbery, Krug said. As opposed to, say, Napa Valley, wine novices will feel welcome touring each unique winery and inquiring about the wine. It’s a good way to learn about the complexities of the subject as well as the process by which wines are made. Spoiled Dog Winery, for example, grows pinot noir grapes on Whidbey. The cool climate is good for them as is the mediocre soil. “They like to be challenged a bit,” she
said. Other types of grapes come from Eastern Washington and are transformed into award-winning wines by Whidbey winemakers. In fact, Krug said it’s amazing how
many awards island wineries have won and continue to win year after year. It’s that care, pride and attention to detail that makes wines on Whidbey so special. Besides wines, a great craft distillery is cooking on Whidbey. Whidbey Island Distillery creates award-winning spirits, including the famous loganberry liqueur

made from local wines and berries. Cadée Distillery also blends and ages its own whiskey, gin and vodka and has a tasting room in Clinton. Those who enjoy something a little more frothy will enjoy the brew pubs on the island. Flyers Restaurant and Brewery and the Loakal Public House are both in Oak Harbor at the north end of the island. Penn Cove Brewing Company is centrally located in Coupeville. And you can find Double Bluff Brewing Company and Spyhop Public House in Langley. The website http://whidbeycamanois lands.com is a great resource for finding out more about Whidbey’s wineries, wine shops, distilleries and brew pubs.

ven during the wind-swept winter, Whidbey Island offers a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities. The pace is generally just a little slower. Winter becomes a time to bundle up, go for a stroll and take in the wild side of Whidbey. That often means becoming an active spectator, whether it be wildlife viewing, stormwatching or beachcombing. One of the island’s most popular outdoor winter pastimes is birding, which can be at its best during the colder months. The fall and winter migration period bring both an abundance and wide variety of birds from red-throated loons near Deception Pass to Great Blue Herons at Crockett Lake.
2016
WHIDBEY FUN “There’s no bad weather, just bad clothing,” said Govinda Rosling, a birder from Clinton and member of the Whidbey Audubon Society. Birding is not the only activity that capitalizes on the island’s scenic beauty during the winter. Most of the island’s state parks remain open for day use during winter, meaning visitors may take beach strolls or hike the trails. The exception is Joseph Whidbey State Park, where the gate will be closed to vehicles but is still accessible by foot. Want overnight camping? Deception Pass and Fort Casey state parks offer this opportunity during the winter.
WINTERONWHIDBEY
Winter also is a time to visit typically crowded destinations in more solitude. State parks matching that description would be Deception Pass, Fort Casey, Fort Ebey and Ebey’s Landing. “You have most of it to yourself,” said Jon Crimmins, area manager of Central Whidbey State Parks. Hiking trails at South Whidbey, Fort Casey and Fort Ebey state parks remain open during the winter, but Crimmins advised that visitors err on the side of caution during windy and stormy days, especially on wooded trails. The trails at Fort Ebey are popular because they connect to the expansive Kettles Trails system in Central Whidbey. Jack Hartt, manager of Deception Pass State Park, the state’s most visited state park, said he enjoys getting out and taking in some of his favorite winter-time hikes such as Goose Rock, Lighthouse Point, Kiket Island and Dugualla. He said these lowland SEE FUN, PAGE 24

hikes range from one to three hours on mostly good terrain.
Whidbey’s winter winds, particularly on the west side, welcome extreme adventurers. Surfers come to the beaches near Fort Ebey to ride the waves in the winter. Kiteboarders also hit the west side. Start-

ing in the late fall, and sometimes stretching into December, the wind invites kiteboarders to Crockett Lake in Coupeville and Double Bluff Beach in Freeland. Another opportunity to get out on the water is kayaking. The Whidbey Island Kayaking Company, based at the Langley Marina, is open year-round for kayak tours, weather permitting. Whidbey also is home to four 18-hole golf courses and two 9-hole, par-3 courses. The 18-hole courses open to the public are Whidbey Golf Club and Galley Golf Course in Oak Harbor and Holmes Harbor Golf Club in Freeland. Useless Bay Golf & Country Club is a private course in Langley. The par-3 courses are Island Greens in Clinton and Lam’s Golf Links in Oak Harbor. If wildlife viewing is part of your outdoor recreation pursuit, Whidbey has no shortage of blacktail deer. A can’t-miss place to see them during the winter is Fort Casey State Park or nearby Camp Casey. The best opportunity to spot a Southern Resident Orca whale from Whidbey shores happens during the late fall and early winter. This often occurs on the island’s west side as resident orcas pursue migrating salmon from October to late December. Transient orcas show up year-round and it’s possible, though more rare, to spot a humpback whale during the winter. Whale watching trips begin in early March when gray whales start arriving in waters around Whidbey as they have for decades in search of ghost shrimp to feed on. This goes on for about two months before they continue their northern migration to Alaska. “The same whales come by every single year to Langley and the Coupeville area,” said Monte Hughes, who runs Mystic Sea Charters. “Every once in a while, they’ll bring a few strangers with them. from 10 to 15 whales come back every year.” Mystic Sea Charters starts its gray whale watching cruises March 1 out of Langley. Deception Pass Tours also starts March 1 out of Oak Harbor. The best spots for birding on Whidbey are Crockett Lake, Deer Lagoon and the Crescent Harbor Marshes. They are sites identified as Important Birding Areas by the National Audubon Society because of their pristine habitat. Whidbey is located in the Pacific Flyway, a north-south migration path for birds. In the fall and winter, a variety of birds arrive from Alaska, British Columbia and other northern reaches. Steve Ellis, a long time birding enthusiast from Coupeville who leads field trips with the Whidbey Audubon Society, said that Whidbey Island also receives birds from Eastern Washington and Idaho for the winter as well as those that come from high-
er elevations in the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges — all with the common goal of fleeing the freeze. “In a lot of ways, winter birding is superior to summer birding because of your ability to see a lot of birds,” said Whidbey Audubon member Sarah Schmidt. Whidbey is home to a healthy population of bald eagles that will travel to rivers in search for spawning salmon but tend to return to the island during the winter months. Other raptors, waterfowl and seabirds are common sights during winter. The Whidbey Audubon Society participates in weekly birding field trips on the island through the winter and offers a monthly guided field trip. One of the biggest winter-time attractions is the red-throated loon that can be seen near Deception Pass in December and January. “It attracts just about every birding group around,” birder Steve Ellis said. Thousands of snow geese and trumpeter swans also frequent the river deltas around
North Puget Sound during the late winter with some stopping over at Dugualla Bay on North Whidbey. The best bet for fishing around Whidbey in the winter is blackmouth in Admiralty Inlet (Marine Area 9) in November. Blackmouth is an immature, Puget Sound resident Chinook salmon. November also can be a good month to catch chum salmon in Admiralty Inlet. Whidbey offers limited hunting opportunities; deer hunting is allowed but highpowered rifles are not permitted. Through the Whidbey Camano Land Trust, the Trillium Community Forest on South Whidbey offers a shortened deer season starting in October with some opportunities in November. Island County has properties on Whidbey designated as hunting areas for deer. For more information about these opportunities, call Island County Public Works at 360679-7331. Through the Western Washington Pheasant Release program, there also are places to hunt for pheasants at various release sites throughout Whidbey Island through November. For more information on that program and sites, go to http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/ pheasant/western/
