PBY Museum exhibit shares memories of Pearl Harbor By MICHAEL WATKINS
mwatkins@whidbeynewsgroup.com
It has been 75 years, but Pauline Williams remembers watching Japanese aircraft drop bombs and the machine gun fire that shattered an otherwise calm, sunny morning. Though she was only 6 at the time, the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor remains vivid in William’s memory.
Jewelry Repair
Williams, who lives in Oak Harbor, is one of 30 Whidbey Island residents who shared their memories of the attack on Pearl Harbor for a special book now on display at the PBY Naval Air Museum. The nonprofit museum is located on Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor. The museum created a special exhibit to mark the 75th anniversary of the surprise attack, which resulted in the deaths of more than 2,300 Americans and led to the nation’s entry into World War II. In addition to the book of memories, the exhibit includes a plaque with names of Washington state residents killed on the USS Arizona, according to Wil Shellenberger, president of the PBY Memorial Foundation.
Come in today to work with Linds highly qualified goldsmiths regarding your jewelry repair needs.
Shellenberger stressed the importance of capturing all of these memories because nearly all the remaining service members who survived the attack have since died. “They may have been too young to serve, but they have vivid memories of seeing planes come in over them while in their yard,” Shellenberger said.
Pat and Carrie are here to help you.
“I was eating cereal and looking at the Sunday morning funny papers when our landlord banged on the door shouting that someone was attacking Pearl Harbor,” said Williams.

“One plane was headed straight for the house,” she recalled. “I could see a smile on his face, and for years I felt he was looking right at me.”
Williams said she ran outside and saw the bombs falling from Japanese Zeroes and heard the distinctive sound of the aircraft machine guns as the enemy fliers made strafing runs over the nearby highway.
As luck would have it, Williams’ father was out to sea at the time on a training exercise aboard the cruiser USS Minneapolis. That ship was supposed to have returned by Sunday morning, but had not done well on the training. The captain of that ship made the fateful decision to remain out an extra day. The ship would have certainly been targeted, Williams said. Williams later married into the Navy, which brought her to live on Whidbey Island. The aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor changed Naval Air Station Whidbey Island as well as the community of Oak Harbor, Shellenberger said. “The base was already being built, but Pearl Harbor really accelerated the growth of the base and the town,” he said. It was World War II and the Navy that helped give Oak Harbor the diversity it has today, Shellenberger said. “Oak Harbor has a small town sort of Norman Rockwell feel to it, but it’s still a melting pot like a big city,” he said. The PBY Museum’s expanded exhibit was made possible through the contributions of the Heritage Flight Museum in Burlington and Island County Historical

Commanding a Growler squadron on Whidbey By SHARON SALYER Herald Writer
In the summer between his junior and senior years in high school, Todd Zentner would bike to his summer job at Hagen Farm in the Snohomish Valley. After spending the early morning hours picking crops, hoeing and weeding, he’d hurry over to Harvey Field on his lunch hour. His father, Darryl Zentner, had previously earned his own private pilot’s license. “How’s he doing?” he asked Todd’s flight instructor. He summed up his assessment in three words: “He’s a natural.” Todd Zentner earned his own private pilot’s license that summer at an age when most kids are still learning to drive, his dad said. That was just one step in a goal his son set while a student at Everett’s Cascade High School: attending the United States Naval Academy. He was accepted into the academy, graduating in 1998. He went on to pilot both the EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
Earlier this month, Todd Zentner, 42, assumed command of the Wizards of Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ 133 based there. “I love the community I’m a part of and leading people,” he said. “It’s a privilege to wear the uniform.” His advancement through the ranks doesn’t surprise John Shoup, Zentner’s Cascade High swim coach, who said Zentner led the team by example. “He was respectful, well grounded, hard working,” Shoup said. “As he walked out of the school, you had no doubt he was going to do wonderful things with his life.” Zentner’s dad remembers his son’s interest in flying began at an early age. After watching the movie “Top Gun,” about a young Naval aviator, “he wanted to be Maverick, Tom Cruise’s character,” Darryl Zentner said. He and his son watched Blue Angels performances whenever they were flying in the Northwest.
Arlington, proudly turn the pages of photo albums marking the milestones in their son’s life: a high school student standing beside a redand-white Cessna at Harvey Field; meeting U.S. Sen. John McCain at the Naval Academy in 1996; their son inside the cockpit of a Goshawk during pilot training in 1999, and returning from his first deployment flying an EA-6B Prowler in 2004. “Flying Naval aircraft off a carrier is probably the highest degree of aviation skill anyone could imagine,” his dad said. “When you have someone who is able to attend the Naval Academy, complete pilot training and rise through the ranks of responsibility, it’s pretty gratifying and sort of humbling, too.” Both he and his wife were on hand for the recent ceremony “busting buttons” as their son assumed command of the squadron. “He’s the buck-stops-here guy now,” his dad said.

Thanking Pearl Harbor survivors By MICHAEL WATKINS
mwatkins@whidbeynewsgroup.com
On the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, more than 50 World War II veterans attended a luncheon held in their honor. The luncheon was held in December at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Officer’s Club. The event was hosted by the Association of Navy Aviation. Among the attendees was Jerry Wachsmuth, the last known remaining Pearl Harbor survivor living in the Puget Sound area. Wachsmuth, now 95, was only 20 when war erupted in 1941. Wachsmuth said he was not drafted into the military, but voluntarily enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was serving aboard the USS Pennsylvania when the attack occurred. In an interview, Wachsmuth recalled that he and his shipmates went topside to help pass ammunition to load the ship’s 20-caliber
anti-aircraft guns. Wachsmuth also reflected on those who died and wondered aloud why he survived. “I just think about all the men that I served with, not just the ship but in the Marine Corps, on the beach battles that we had and how many never got a chance to live,” Wachsmuth said, choking back tears as he spoke. President of the association’s Whidbey Island Squadron Howard Gully said the luncheon turnout was bigger than anticipated. Navy officials said they were expecting about 20 attendees.

“I think the census was wrong,” Gully said excitedly. Gully explained that he was told there are only about 70 remaining WWII veterans locally. However, he learned there are more than 90 currently living in Island, San Juan and Skagit counties. More than 250 service members, veterans and their families filled the room to pay
