ABOUT THE COVER

From the President While compared to some in this community I have only lived in the Kingston and Hansville area for a short time, 12 years. My husband’s family has been in the Kinston, Bainbridge and Hansville areas since the early 1940’s. As soon as I moved out here with my husband and his family, I immediately fell in love with the community, the people and the beautiful North Kitsap area! I am enthusiastic, excited and proud to be the 2017 Kingston Chamber President. I have worked for The Point Casino for several years. In working for the casino, I have been privileged to unite with the Greater Kingston Chamber and many local business owners. It is my goal in 2017 as Chamber President to bring together local businesses, community leaders and our board of Executives. Our goal at the Chamber is to support local businesses within the Greater Kingston area and beyond; Downtown Kingston, Indianola, Hansville, Port Gamble, Port Gamble

S’Klallam Tribe, Suquamish Tribe, North Kitsap and our neighbors in Jefferson County. The Kingston Chamber Board of Directors has a lot of momentum coming out of 2016, and we intend to continue that energy through 2017. Our Visitors Center has a wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable staff of volunteers that keep the center open 7 days per week throughout the spring and summer and 6 days per week the rest of the year. From the Executive Director I’m so proud to be a part of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Information Center. I work alongside a great group of people that continue to inspire, support and challenge me (in a good way) every day. We have a stellar staff of volunteers that keep the Visitor’s Center running. Most of these folks are retired business people who love their community and love sharing their knowledge of the area with tourists and locals alike. Our board of directors is comprised of people that are working hard to improve not only their own businesses but all of the businesses in the Greater Kingston area. They get up at the crack of dawn to attend our board meetings and serve on committees dedicated to a variety of tasks aimed at building a strong and sustainable local economy. All taking time out of their busy lives to donate time to the greater good. Our membership is comprised of businesses big and small.

Members network at our functions and reach out to help one another through cross promotion and by patronizing one another’s businesses. We serve as the “parent” organization for a number of groups that organize community events, beautify the town and contribute financially to the needs of various groups and causes. If you are not currently a member of our chamber, I encourage you to reach out to someone who is, a board member, or myself, and learn what we can do together. I’m in the office 5 days a week. What Does The Chamber Do?

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce supports the business activities of its members through promotion, advertising, networking, and participation in community events such as the Kingston Wine Walk, Summer Concerts & Kingston Cove Christmas. The Chamber runs the visitors Center which provides tourism and relocation information to people visiting or moving to our area. The Chamber works with other local Chambers of Commerce, Visit Kitsap, NK Tourism Coalition, and other groups and agencies to accomplish its mission. The Chamber provides its members a voice in community and governmental activities.

The formation of the North Kitsap Economic Assessment Committee, started by a group of dedicated Kingston individuals, resulted in a greater understanding of the economic strengths and opportunities, as well as the weaknesses in the area. After gathering a great deal of data, including demographics and statistics, and analyzing the information, the group morphed from “Assessment” to “Development”. The committee changed the name to the Greater Kingston Economic Development Committee,

and is affiliated with the much larger Kitsap Economic Development Alliance (KEDA), this group will carry out the recommendations of the assessment committee. The recommendations are focused around bringing in more businesses, while supporting existing businesses, and increasing the visitor industry in Kingston. It has also been recommended that a branding effort for Kingston be undertaken, which will result in making Kingston a successful destination. An effort to involve the community was conducted through a community survey after recommendations from a professional consultant. The results are being analyzed at this writing. In addition, investigations into bringing in a hotel and destination restaurant are underway. With the expansion of port properties, and the efforts of many civic minded, volunteer Kingston citizens, resources to start new businesses are infinite, and the future for Kingston has never looked brighter. An environment of cooperation among the existing businesses in Kingston invites competition for more economic development. With an entrepreneurial spirit, business and community leaders in Kingston have spent an exciting year exploring the

Kingston local musicians and “Tiny Town”, Art in the Woods, Kites over Kingston, Kitsap Arts & Crafts Festival and Kingston’s Cove Summer Concerts and Kingston’s Cove Christmas are a few of the many events offered in Kingston. Supporting these Kingston activities are many community organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce Rotary, Kiwanis, Soroptimists, Garden Club and many of our small businesses that take an active role in ensuring the success of these events. Kingston is a great place to call home for all the reasons mentioned, and it is important to highlight an exciting recent addition to the Kingston scene, as we look forward to the expansion of the Kingston community. Kingston Village Green is the only project in Kitsap County recognized in 2015 with the Puget Sound Regional Council’s VISION 2040 award. The new building houses the Community Center, Kingston Library, Boys & Girls Club and Senior Center. The goal: To create a place where everyone feels welcome. Where children learn, play and are inspired. Where community members of every age explore the world through a regional library. Where seniors join with others and experience the joys of intergenerational programs. Over the past 12 years, volunteers have raised nearly 10 million dollars, to complete construction. The Kingston Village Green is one component in the on-going growth, vitality and sustainability of Kingston, and it is just the beginning of much more to come. Suquamish

Suquamish, a waterfront community located on the Port Madison Indian Reservation, just a few miles south of Kingston, is home to the Suquamish Tribe, a sovereign nation. The name Suquamish originated from the Tribe’s winter village site called “d’suq’wub,” which means “place of clear salt water.” Suquamish is easily reached by highway and is near the Bainbridge Island and Kingston ferry docks. Suquamish was once a vacation get-away with small weekend fishing cabins along the waterfront. Today, the community is composed of privately-owned and tribal-trust property. Chief Seattle, a powerful Native leader of the northwest, is buried at the Suquamish Memorial Cemetery. The City of Seattle is named for him. Chief Seattle, a great orator and peacekeeper, was instrumental in preserving the culture of the Suquamish people after the treaty negotiations in the 1850s. Chief Seattle expressed his people’s relationship with

the earth when he delivered a now famous speech during the treaty accords. This historic speech, additional history, and exhibits of Suquamish, the Suquamish Tribe, and the Port Madison Indian Reservation can be found at the Suquamish Museum. The community of Suquamish, in the center of which stands their new community center, the House of Awakened Culture, is home to some of Kitsap Peninsula’s most eye-catching views. The area looks across Puget Sound to the City of Seattle, the Cascade Mountain range, and south to Mount Rainier. Nearby, tourists can visit Grover’s Creek Fish Hatchery, the Suquamish Museum, Old Man House Park, the veterans’ memorial, and Chief Seattle’s gravesite. Today, the Suquamish Tribe operates the Suquamish Clearwater Casino and Resort, with Vegas-style gaming, world-class entertainment and resort hotel accommodations and spa, as well as White Horse Golf

Club. The casino includes three dining options. A free shuttle operates between the casino and the ferry landings at Kingston and Bainbridge, with shuttle services to Silverdale and Bremerton. In 2015 the casino added a new hotel, bringing in additional 183 rooms to the area. A new parking garage was also added. In July 2009, the Suquamish community hosted the Canoe Journey — celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1989 event which occurred from Suquamish to Seattle to celebrate Washington state’s Centennial — with food and dance, music and sharing between Tribes from all over the coastal Northwest. Since 1993, when the Bella Bella people challenged the Canoe Nations to paddle to their shores, the Canoe Journey has been an annual event with stops up and down the coast. In mid-August, Suquamish hosts Tribal Nations from all over the United States and Canada when it celebrates

Suquamish Chief Seattle Days. This three-day celebration is open to everyone. The event features a powwow and various games and contests. Canoe races for children and adults celebrate the coastal peoples’ relationship with the water. Food and art vendors bring in traditional products for sale. The community of Suquamish continues to show respect for the land, waters and natural resources, and a genuine understanding of the relationships among these systems. Located at the northernmost tip of the Kitsap Peninsula is the town of Hansville, Washington. Historically a mecca for salmon fishing, this tiny town at one time boasted seven operating resorts along its beaches. The resorts are gone however Hansville remains a wildly popular destination for sport fishing by motor boat, kayak or surf casting from shore. Hansville also has three county parks, a Nature Conservancy Preserve and multiple wetlands offering year round world class bird watching. With 260 acres and over 7 miles of trails, the Hansville Greenway Trail System links Puget Sound to Hood Canal and provides the protection of habitat for a wide variety of wildlife including black bear, deer, beaver, owls, coyote and even cougar. The oldest lighthouse on Puget Sound, the Point No Point Lighthouse, is located in Hansville. The United States Lighthouse Headquarters is housed here, offering information, lighthouse tours, gifts, and overnight accommodations on site. Why the name “Point No Point”? Wilkes of the US Exploring Expedition came upon a sandy spit, thinking it a point of land. Upon closer inspection, the spit was much smaller than it looked and there was no “point” to speak of it. He named it Point No Point. As Seattle and Tacoma grew and marine traffic increased, so did the occurrence of marine calamities, making it necessary to construct light stations along Admiralty Inlet and Puget Sound. In 1879 construction was begun on the Point No Point Lighthouse and on January 1, 1880 it officially went into service. About the same time, the area started to see the arrival of settlers, mostly Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish immigrants. Two Norwegian settlers Hans Zachariasen and Anton Husby ran a ferry service with their boats, from the steamers anchored off shore to the beach near the lighthouse. As legend has it, Anton was a conservative and highly moralistic man. He refused to ferry anyone who had been drinking spirits of any kind. The Port Gamble S’Klallam reservation is located on the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State. It is adjacent to Port Gamble Bay—a stunning scenic waterway that has provided sustenance to the Port Gamble S’Klallam people for more than 1,000 years. Many of the Tribe’s more than 1,150 members depend on the bay for personal use and/or commercial fishing and shellfishing. Originally known as the Nux Sklai Yem or the Strong People, the Port Gamble S’Klallam are descendants of the Salish people who have lived in the Puget Sound basin and surrounding areas since 2400 B.C. The Tribe’s original ancestral village was located at what is known today as the town of Port Gamble. The S’Klallams were asked to relocate in 1853 to make way for the sawmill once open at the townsite. The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is dedicated to maintaining its traditional way of life and does so, in part, by acting as a steward for the environment, which has included the protection of Port Gamble Bay. Entertainment and Tourism

The Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation is known for its stunning wooded vistas and tranquil, picturesque water views. While in Kitsap County, visit the carving center located across from the Tribal Center on Little Boston Road. The carving center offers for sale traditional art crafted by master carvers. Whether you need gas, a snack, or a refreshing drink, stop in at The Gliding Eagle Marketplace, conveniently located at the intersection of Hansville Road and Little Boston Road, just two miles north of Highway 104 west of Kingston. This full-service gas station and convenience store offers a variety of products—including tribal-related items and gifts—as well as diesel and propane fuel, a full deli, espresso stand, and RV disposal. Up the road from the Gliding Eagle Marketplace is The Point Casino. Recently expanded and remodeled, the new Point Casino—open 24 hours a day—is located just 10 minutes from the Kingston ferry or 15 minutes from downtown Poulsbo. The Point Casino offers an array of restaurant options— from deli and buffet to casual fine dining—and an upscale cigar bar as well as 650 slots, table games, poker, and a Lounge bar. Entertainment options include live music, comedy, sports, and special events in The Event Center. The luxurious and inviting new hotel is now open. In late 2016, The Point Casino Hotel opened adding 94 rooms to the

North Kitsap area. In 2012, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe purchased Heronswood, a multiacre botanical garden located just outside the boundaries of their reservation. Once a revered destination for horticultural enthusiasts, Heronswood was sold by its original owners with public access minimized. The Tribe, aided by passionate supporters, began restoration efforts at Heronswood and has opened it back up to fans and plant lovers through Plant Sale & Garden Open events.

Philanthropy

The Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of tribal members while increasing understand-

ing of the Tribe’s rich cultural heritage. Recent projects have included the publication of The Strong People, the first comprehensive written history of the Port Gamble S’Klallam. In addition, the Foundation has been instrumental in efforts related to the restoration of Heronswood—from managing donations and memberships to organizing volunteer and outreach events. The Tribe also donates tens of thousands of dollars a year through its Community Awards program as well as an annual fundraising campaign by the Point Casino for a pre-selected charitable partner. Port Gamble is set along the scenic shores of Hood Canal and Gamble Bay, a mile east of the Hood Canal Bridge on Highway 104, or eight miles west of the Kingston Ferry terminal. Teekalet, Native American for “brightness of the noon-day sun.” The 120-acre site was founded in 1853 by Puget Mill Company (later named Pope & Talbot) as a home for mill workers and their families and was one of the premier mill towns in Puget Sound. It was the oldest continuously operating mill towns in North America before it closed in 1995 after 142 years. The town is a popular day trip, wedding destination, and meeting and event venue. It is also a great destination for residents of neighboring Jefferson, Mason, Pierce, King and Sno-

homish counties, especially during the summer when events (both large and small) take place almost every weekend. Other events include a Ghost Conference, Fiber and Fabrics Festival, Ghost Walks, Maritime Music Festival, Historic Walking tours, many running and biking events, and an old-fashioned Country Christmas, which help the town draw visitors’ year around.
