Retiring Northrop Grumman employee named 29th Honorary Naval Aviator By TONY POPP

NAS Whidbey public affairs

Joseph Farina received a surprise retirement party at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Jan. 13. It was far from a typical celebration, however. More than 200 military and civilian personnel from the electronic attack community gathered at Electronic Attack Squadron 129 to retire Farina, who was surprised with an Honorary Naval Aviator Award from Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John M. Richardson. Capt. Trevor Estes, VAQ129’s fleet replacement training commanding officer, pinned the wings on Farina on behalf of the CNO. As Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Northrop Grumman senior logistics field representative, Farina becomes the 29th Honorary Naval Aviator to joins the ranks of such notables as legendary entertainer Bob Hope, Adm. Arleigh Burke and Gen. “Jimmy” Doolittle. “It was the biggest surprise

of my life,” said Farina. “I was stunned. My wife and I consider all the military men and women, civilians and contractors here part of our extended family. We’re proud of them and I thank them all. … I’m honored and humbled.” Farina has been a mainstay for Commander, Electronic Attack Wing for both the EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler. He spent 42 of his 53 years with Northrop Grumman providing logistical support to the U.S. Navy. “Farina’s personal contribution to aerospace and aviation for over 53 years is nothing short of phenomenal,” Estes said. “His overall support coordination of Naval Aviation with the Operational Wing, Squadrons, Supply Department, NAVAIR (Naval Air Systems Command) and Northrop Grumman engineering/vendors has resulted in hundreds of successful squadron deployments scheduled worldwide.” Farina came to NAS Whidbey Island in 1974 in

from the Lunar Module program in Florida. He was sent by the Grumman Corporation to specifically support the Aviation Electronic Attack community and particularly the EA-6B Prowler in its initial war-fighting suites known as the standard and expanded capability. His work ensured the fleet met the worldwide postVietnam, Cold War challenges. Farina was the primary logistic interface between the Grumman/Northrop

Grumman Corporation, Navy Supply, Naval Inventory Control Point, Naval Air Systems Command, appropriate program management agencies, Type Wing, all Aviation Electronic Attack deployers for East and West coasts and expeditionary deployments. His support continued in the transition to EA-6B Improved Capability and eventually to the replacement aircraft, the EA-18G

Growler, in 2009. He personally watched the flow of each aircraft component and weapons replaceable assembly as it proceeded in the logistics and repair process. Capt. Scott Farr, commander of Electronic Attack Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet, spoke at the ceremony, recalling Farina’s career milestones. “Joe helped our community in over 195 EA-6B/ EA-18G major carrier deployments to the Western Pacific

VA to provide fertility treatment Veterans who have been wounded in the line of duty can now access in vitro fertilization through the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA’s announcement follows years of advocacy by U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen and a provision passed as part of the Congressional spending bill in September 2016 which temporarily circumvented a 1992 ban on in vitro fertilization for veterans. “It is great to see the VA moving forward to expand reproductive healthcare for veterans,” said Larsen, a senior member on the House Armed Services Committee.

The provision that temporarily lifted the ban – which was originally included in the Senate version of the bill by U.S. Patty Senator Murray – allows the VA to provide assisted reproductive technology and adoption reimbursement to veterans, and comes after a four year effort on the part of Larsen and Murray. Previously, the VA was able to provide veterans with fertility assessments, counseling and some treatments but not IVF – the most popular and successful assisted reproductive technology available today – which forced veterans to pay thousands of dollars to address fertility issues from service-connected injuries.

RED TAILS, SILVER WINGS EXHIBIT SOARS By GALE FIEGE

T

he Tuskegee Airmen were the United States’ first African-American military pilots. Red Tails, Silver Wings — the current exhibition at the Schack Art Center in Everett — honors these heroic World War II veterans, recognizes Black History Month (February) and celebrates the talents of Everett artist Chris Hopkins. Some of Hopkins’ 70 narrative paintings of the famed airmen are permanently exhibited at the Pentagon. Most of the artwork has toured the country. And now more than 50 paintings and

sketches hang in the main gallery at the Schack. Hopkins, 63, describes himself as a visual narrator. The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is what’s important, he said. The Tuskegee Airmen challenged racial discrimination in the military. At the beginning of World War II, the armed forces were still segregated and the Army Air Corps refused to train young black men as pilots. In response to a lawsuit, the Air Corps (forerunner to the Air Force) agreed to train pilots and crews at Tuskegee University in Alabama. “The Jim Crow era gave way to the Tuskegee Airmen,” Hopkins said. “And they were a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement.” The artist began the series during his service to the Air Force Art Program. Recently at the Schack Art Center, artist Chris Hopkins unpacks a few of his Tuskegee Airmen paintings while exhibit hanger, Jose Wise (background) prepares walls. The painting he carries is titled “Roscoe Brown.” The painting sitting against the wall at left is “The Flyer of the 332nd.” “It was received much better than I anticipated,” he said. “I am proud of this body of work.” Over the years, the series became a personal mission and passion. The project is

a heartfelt tribute aimed at accurately portraying the battles over Europe and the stateside work of these first black fighter pilots, their support crews, their families, their predecessors and their

legacy, Hopkins said. In the 1980s, during the pre-digital age, Hopkins was based in Los Angeles, where he painted movie posters and covers for record albums, magazines and books. He

was arguably one of the most sought-after illustrators in the country. Born in Mount Vernon and raised in Medford, Oregon, Hopkins left LA to move back to the Northwest. He and his family landed in Everett in 1988. Another series by Hopkins — Trail of Cedar, Stone & Canvas — was shown at the Schack in 2014. That series is a tribute to the Northwest Coast first nations and tribes, “who preserve history and enrich culture in contemporary times,” he said. Hopkins, his wife and their son currently are completing a series of artworks detailing the plight of West Coast Japanese Americans during World War II. “My wife’s parents were interned in the Minidoka camp in Idaho,” Hopkins said. “The series illustrates the worst and the best of humanity.” In conjunction with the Red Tails, Silver Wings exhibit, Hopkins and his friend, author Guy E. Franklin, plan to talk about “Black Aviation during World War II” tonight at SEE SCHACK, 5

VAQ-130 returns home for the New Year By MICHAEL WATKINS

“It should be a fun and informative evening,” Hopkins said. In the loft gallery at the Schack, see a complementary exhibit by retired Boeing designer Robert Parks, 90, of Shoreline. Historic Aircraft Profiles includes dozens of Parks’ colorful and detailed drawings and paintings of planes.

VAQ 130’s pilots and electronic warfare officers flew the squadron’s EA-18G Growlers back to NAS Whidbey Island from USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), while support and maintenance personnel reunited with their families later via airlift.

Parks loved watching planes when he was a boy in Maryland. He served stateside in the Air Force during World War II, went to Duke University and worked at Boeing for 48 years. “In between all this I flew in almost 50 different types of airplanes and performed as an air show clown in numerous air shows in the Northwest,” he said. “I also achieved some fame as an aviation artist and illustrated the book ‘Ernest K. Gann’s Flying Circus.’ One of my paintings resides in the Smithsonian Institution, though it might be in storage now, and there are many in corporate offices.”

“I am just as proud of the families back in Whidbey as I am of the Zapper Sailors,” said Cmdr. Brendan Stickles, VAQ-130’s commanding officer. “Our squadron was gone from home nine months during the last year. We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of all the Zapper friends and families.”

In transit to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility, or AOR, the Zappers conducted flight operations off the coast of Spain, France, and Italy. Following, the Zappers, as part of the CVW-3 and CVN69 team, entered the 5th Fleet AOR through the Suez Canal as CVN-69 relieved the USS Harry S. Truman in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Parks, who has participated in the Fresh Paint festival hosted by the Schack on the Everett waterfront, said he is honored to be involved in the current exhibition. If you go: Red Tails, Silver Wings, through Feb. 25. Also, hear a lecture about the Tuskegee Airmen at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 at the Schack. Admission is $5. Navy veteran’s family scatter his ashes near base By Kari Bray

HAT ISLAND — Alfred “Alfy” Hollenbeck’s family and friends celebrated his life during a cold, sunny afternoon on the water. A seagull called out and a seal swam nearby during the

service. A wave rocked the boat as about 25 guests bowed their heads for the Lord’s Prayer.

Hollenbeck, a U.S. Navy veteran and engineer, wanted his ashes scattered at sea. His wife, Celia, 71, gathered loved ones aboard a whale-watching boat to honor that wish.

A banner hung from the side of the boat, temporarily dubbing it the USS Bairoko after the aircraft carrier Hollenbeck served on. Hollenbeck died Nov. 28. He was 87. During a short ceremony, pastor and friend Bob Higgins asked people to describe Hollenbeck. The group agreed he was full of love, joy and mischief. He was a brilliant engineer. He loved to spin stories.

“I think it was a joy to know Alfy because you could tell in the twinkle in his eye and the spinning of his yarns and that silly grin that it was a joy for him to know you,” Higgins said. Hollenbeck had a tough childhood in Chicago and later Portland, where he fell in with a bad crowd and got caught stealing gas from a sheriff’s vehicle. A judge gave him two choices: reform school or the Navy. Hollenbeck served in the Navy at the end of World War II and in the Korean War before earning an engi-

Bryon Hollenbeck, 58, grew up in the Sultan house his dad built. His dad taught him how to fish, weld and work on cars and farm equipment. He would take Bryon and his sister, Susan, hiking and fishing around Spada Lake. Susan died last year of cancer. Hollenbeck treated his adult stepchildren as though they’d always been family, stepdaughter Denise McCoy said. Celia met Alfred square dancing a year after his first wife, Sarah, died. Celia was visiting from a Seattle club to help start a group in Sultan. The men were being bashful, so Celia was sent to grab somebody for a dance. It was Alfy. They married 12 years ago. Alfred had retired from Boeing and Celia from her job at the City of Everett.
