Neighbors Feeding Neighbors
Each day, RFWF helps someone in our community. County funds went away, local resources were reduced, RFWF stepped in and today we are successfully changing lives. Whether it is getting a senior to an appointment, delivering a hot meal, helping a family cope with a loved one’s mental illness, or feeding a child over the weekend – bottom line, we are filling the gaps.

Influenza season lasts to March BY ANA KAREN PEREZ GUZMAN

he flu season is in full force now, as it typically is around the colder months. As soon as the season starts to change and there’s a chill in the air, more and more cases of the flu are reported. This year is unlike previous years. There has been a high number of influenza deaths for the 2016-2017 year, Senior Vice President/Chief Quality, Integrity and Medical Affairs Officer for MultiCare Health Systems, Dr. Maria Granzotti, said
Holistic Health Kim Ode, Holistic Health Practitioner, CH
in an email. There were 24 lab-confirmed influenza deaths reported as of Dec. 31. Compared to last year, at this time there were only eight counted deaths reported. “We have seen increased volumes of patients in our emergency rooms, many with flu-like symptoms,” Granzotti said. The reason for the increase could be because the predominating flu virus this year is influenza A, which according to the CDC, seasons that are prominent with this type of virus are often associated with more severe illness and higher mortality, Granzotti said. This type of flu affects

children and older people more since their immune systems aren’t as strong. Of the 24 deaths reported, they were all people who were over the age of 50. Two were ages 50-64 and the other 22 were 65 and older. Healthcare providers are treating everyone as well as they can when they come in with symptoms. Granzotti suggest people who have flu-like symptoms but no underlying health conditions to consider options other than the emergency room. The emergency room is filling up fast and they want people with severe symptoms to be helped as fast as possible. Other options for people with minor symptoms includes MultiCare, Urgent Care and Indigo Urgent Care clinics; MultiCare eCare (text based service); Doctor on Demand (video visits) or RediClinics inside select Rite Aid stores. The best protection against the flu will always be the yearly flu shot. Maintaining good hand hygiene practices and staying home if sick are also very important to stop the spread of the flu. Staying home if sick is critical especially if you’re around elderly people, young children or people with chronic conditions. The peak month for the flu can range between December and March. So for the next few months, it is important to try and prevent the spread of the flu by any means possible.

BY MULTICARE HEALTH SYSTEM
Flu activity is considered widespread and an epidemic in Washington state, with 114 lab-confirmed influenza deaths reported statewide for the 2016-2017 season, according to the Washington State Department of Health. The best protection against the flu is washing your hands regularly and getting a yearly flu shot. Flu activity typically peaks between December and March, but it can last as late as May. Here’s what you need to know about the current outbreaks, plus the best ways to protect yourself and your family. 1. Flu shots are your best protection, and it’s not too late to get one. There’s still time to get your flu shot. The flu vaccine is effective as long as flu viruses are circulating. Because flu viruses are constantly changing, each year the vaccine is updated based on which influenza viruses are making people sick. The vaccine this year is a good match with circulating viruses, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. Influenza A (H3N2) is the predominating virus being seen this flu season. The flu vaccine can reduce the risk of getting the flu by about 50 to 60 percent, according to research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which studies how well the vaccine protects against the flu each year. Traditional flu vaccines protect against three different flu viruses that research suggests will be most common: two influenza A viruses and one influenza B virus. Even when the vaccine is not a good match against circulating viruses, it can still sometimes provide protection against different (but related) viruses, says the CDC. Everyone older than 6 months old should get the flu shot, according to the CDC. It’s especially important for those at higher risk to get vaccinated: • Children younger than 5 but especially younger than 2 • Adults 65 and older

We know washing our hands is one of the most effective steps against illnesses such as the flu, but what else can you do? • Avoid crowded places and close contact with people who are sick • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze • Avoid touching your eyes and nose, as this is how flu viruses spread 3. If you get sick, stay home and rest. Taking these steps is not a guarantee, of course. The key to getting better is to stay home and rest. In addition: • Avoid close contact with family members so you don’t pass on the illness • Drink plenty of fluids — dehydration is a serious complication in flu patients • You can treat fever and cough with over-the-counter medications for comfort If you have a flu-like illness, try to stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (unless you need to receive care). 4. If symptoms don’t improve, see your doctor. If you experience a cough, fever or other flu symptoms that worsen or don’t improve, this is the time to see your doctor. The same goes if you are pregnant, over the age of 65 or otherwise at high risk of flu-related complications. See your primary care doctor many walk-in clinics. Avoid the emergency room for flu-like symptoms unless you have underlying health conditions. Difficulty breathing, inability to drink enough fluids and irritability in children are some of the more serious signs of a significant influenza infection, which can lead to complications. Where can I get a flu shot? You can get your flu shot by making an appointment with your primary care or pediatric provider, visiting a pharmacy that offers the vaccine.

Vaccination with the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is the best protection against mumps. Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 88 percent effective at preventing infection with the mumps virus. Children should be vaccinated with two doses of measles, mumps, rubella vaccine, with the first dose between 12 and 15 months and the second at four-to-six years. Adults should have at least one mumps vaccination, with some people

King and Pierce counties each have cases of mumps. The Washington State Department of Health is reminding people across the state to make sure they take precautions to help stop the spread of mumps. Mumps is a contagious disease that spreads through saliva. Symptoms of mumps typically include low-grade fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite. Its most distinctive symptom is swelling of the cheeks, neck or jaw, though not everyone experiences this, and some people get no symptoms at all. It also can cause swelling of other glands such as the testicles. The illness lasts a week to ten days in most cases. Mumps can be more serious in

needing two. People born before 1957 are considered immune because they probably had mumps, but everyone born in 1957 or later should be vaccinated. “We’re asking people, especially in these two counties, to make sure everyone in their family has been fully vaccinated,” said State Health Officer Dr. Kathy Lofy. “While most people who get mumps will have a mild illness which goes away within a week or so, some people may experience serious health complications.” Mumps vaccine gives lifelong protection to about nine out of 10 people, but some people who are vaccinated can still get mumps. It’s important for everyone to be vaccinated; it helps protect people for whom the vaccine might not work as well, and also protects those who can’t be vaccinated because they are too young or have a medical condition that prevents it. Because mumps spreads during close contact, children who are not protected against mumps by vaccination may be excluded from school in areas where mumps is spreading. The State Department of Health’s Immunization Program has more information about mumps and the MMR vaccine. If you think you never received mumps vaccine and there is an outbreak in your community, contact your healthcare provider for immunizations or a blood test.

Healthy eyes are important all year
Every year we make a list of things to stay healthy so you can feel your best. But, did you realize that feeling your best includes seeing your best too? Anytime is the perfect time to spread the word about the disease. So, this year, add learning about glaucoma to your list. Your eyes will thank you for it.
1.
Glaucoma can cause vision loss and blindness, which can’t be reversed. Glaucoma causes fluid to build up in your eye, causing pressure that can damage the optic nerve, which transfers visual images to your brain. But, you can save your vision with early detection and treatment.
2.
There are no early symptoms. Glaucoma often has no early warning signs. No pain. No discomfort. No blurry vision. Only advanced glaucoma will affect your vision. Don’t wait for symptoms to visit your eye doctor.
3.
In the United States, half the people who have glaucoma don’t know they do. Nearly 3 million Americans have glaucoma. Half don’t know it. Lack of awareness and the absence of symptoms are prevent-
ing people from detecting the disease early. You can change that. Find out if you have glaucoma.
4.
Some people are at higher risk than others. African Americans over 40, adults over 60 – especially Hispanics/Latinos, and people with a family history of glaucoma are at higher risk, making early detection especially important. Are you at higher risk? Talk to your family about glaucoma.
5.
There is only one way to know if you have glaucoma. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to find out if you have glaucoma. During the exam, an eye care professional places drops in your eyes to widen the pupils and looks for signs of the disease in the optic nerve. Now that you’ve got the facts about glaucoma, make a resolution for healthier vision. Schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam today. And encourage your friends and loved ones to do the same. To learn more about glaucoma, visit www.nei.nih.gov/glaucoma.

Healthy Tips & Strategies Household mold and your health Are your child’s asthma attacks becoming more frequent and serious? Are you continually catching colds? These situations may be the result of exposure to mildew without you even knowing it. When a lot of mildew — or mold — develops in a home, these microscopic fungi can scatter breathable particles into the air and consequently cause a number of health problems. Depending on your state of health, age, and amount of time spent in the home, you could be more sensitive. Especially vulnerable are babies, young children, seniors, and people with depressed immune systems. How do you know if these unwelcome visitors are invading your home? Look for the following: the appearance of stains, which are often black, on walls, ceilings, or carpets; a musty or earthy smell; dark rings and buckling, which are evidence of water infiltration. Mold loves damp conditions, and those can usually be found in basements, the backs of closets, under kitchen sinks, in bathrooms, and sometimes around windows. You can prevent mold by ensuring good ventilation in your home. Open windows or switch on fans when taking baths or showers or when you’re cooking. In hot, humid weather be sure to use a dehumidifier in chronically damp places, especially in the basement. Empty and clean the reservoir regularly and add several drops of lemon essential oil to disinfect it. Repair any water leaks as soon as possible. If condensation forms on windows, especially during the winter, check the insulation. These small actions will help to prevent mold from harming your family’s health.
Chew your way to slimness Chewing our food thoroughly can help us to eat less. This fact has been demonstrated in a recent study showing the influence of oral stimulation on our feelings of satiety and the number of calories ingested. Oral stimulation means putting food into our mouths, taking the time to taste it, and chewing it slowly before swallowing. The study shows that the length of the oral stimulation is inversely proportional to calorie intake, which is sure to interest those who watch their weight — in other words the vast majority of us. The results of this research are in full agreement with the old adage, “Chew your liquids and drink your food”. This means that you should drink in small sips, rolling the liquid around the mouth, and chew your food until it is liquid before swallowing it. Chewing longer also prolongs the meal and leaves time for feelings of fullness to set in. These signals are emitted by the brain when it has received information from the stomach indicating that the body no longer needs to eat. It is essential to pay attention to these signals, especially because we live in a society that promotes fast food and quantity over quality. In fact, although we should stop eating when we no longer feel hungry, the majority of people are directly influenced by the quantity of food on their plates. For your health’s sake, start serving reasonable portions, chewing thoroughly, and listening for your stomach to tell you it has had enough.

PHYSICAL THERAPY: • improves mobility and strength • reduces pain • helps avoid surgery
Unlike many physical therapy clinics that offer a single episode of care that is often prematurely ended due to insurance interests, we believe that completing physical therapy is the first step to a healthier you. We begin with a Health Risk Assessment to determine the underlying cause of your condition and create a plan of care to improve your overall health.
