Silverdale: the heartbeat of the Kitsap Peninsula Often called the heartbeat of the Kitsap Peninsula, Silverdale is the center of activity in Kitsap County as a growing medical hub, a great retail shopping location, and a wonderful place to work and live. Loggers were the first to come to Silverdale in the mid 1850s. They expanded their operations into the valleys of Kitsap County, building roads as they went. By the 1880s, Scandinavian immigrants were moving into the area seeking work. As the timber production took the prime trees and opened up large areas, attention turned to farming. Farming conditions were excellent and the family farms thrived. The Farmer’s Cooperative was formed in 1887. Dairy, chicken and hog farms abounded even through the middle 20th century. The town’s name was given by settler William Littlewood who wanted to name

the town Goldendale. It turned out that another town close by bore that name. So he changed the “gold” to “silver” and named it Silverdale. As the area began to grow, steamers from Seattle made regular trips to Silverdale. The Silverdale dock was the center

of entertainment and commercial trade well into the 1900s. And today, that area is commonly called the Silverdale waterfront, with park space, beach access, and quaint old-fashioned-looking neighborhood shopping appropriately called “Old Town.”

everyone to fill their retail therapy needs. Old Town, too, is known to be the place to go for hair care, beauty products and even a spa day. The announcement by the Navy in the mid 1970s, that it would develop its West Coast Trident Submarine Base at Bangor, caused a rush of change in the community as more people moved into the area and businesses moved into the region to support the growing population. Today’s population of the Silverdale area is climbing toward 20,000 and is expected to grow by another 6,000 by 2035, according to the county. With the growth in retail and medical offices, the employment base also is expected to grow by about 9,000 jobs. The largest employers in the area are the U.S. Navy and Harrison Medical Center. While Silverdale remains unincorporated, there are groups working toward making it a city of its own. In Kitsap County’s current comprehensive plan, it is anticipated that Silverdale will be a city within the next 20 years. Currently, it is governed by a three-member county commission with Ed Wolfe being the commissioner representing the Silverdale area. Silverdale managed to enter the 21st century with some undeveloped land -- pastures, roaming deer and old-time barns. One can also still find a solitary, tree-lined avenue or a quiet park. In fact, relaxing spots can be found in the Silverdale waterfront park, on the Clear Creek Trail and Island Lake County park. Silverdale also offers scenic trails and beachfront hotels with attractive views of Dyes Inlet, Mt. Rainier, the Olympic Mountains and stunning sunsets. The easy beach access offers opportunities for outdoor recreation. Two of the largest hotels in Kitsap are located right on the waterfront in Silverdale; the Oxford Suites and the Best Western Plus Silverdale Beach Hotel & Conference Center. And nearby, there’s even a place to rent a kayak and take off from the Silverdale waterfront. Silverdale is centrally located and is the perfect place to start your Kitsap Peninsula adventure.

THE PEOPLE

POPULATION The population of Kitsap County was approximately 260,131 as of 2015. Almost 20,000 people live in the area typically defined as Silverdale. Although rural in general appearance because of the incredible scenery, Kitsap County is rated third highest in population density of 39 counties in the state. The county also enjoys the seventh highest median income of the 39 Washington counties. According to 2015 data, more than 94.5 percent of the population (25 years old and older) have a high school education or more. College graduates make up 30 percent or the residents. On average, a resident commutes 22 minutes to work each day. About 51 percent of the population, 17 years of age and older, are married. And 10 percent of the population are foreign born. The largest percentage of residents are white (70) while Asians make up about 10 percent of the population. Children make up 39 percent of the households in Silverdale. The median income for a Silverdale

household is $64,210, and the median home price is $347,800.

EDUCATION The Central Kitsap School District covers a 110 square-mile area in and around Silverdale. The district has two high schools, three middle schools, one secondary school, 12 elementary schools, and a home-school support program. About 41 percent of students in the district are dependents of active military personnel. In addition, the district offers learning opportunities in a non-traditional setting for both junior high and high school students through alternative programs. Silverdale also offers a variety of independent, private and religious affiliated educational opportunities. Silverdale’s unique location, close to Seattle and Tacoma, affords students seeking four-year and post graduate degrees the opportunity to select from a large number of institutions of higher learning. Kitsap County is served by Olympic College in Bremerton. With an annual student attendance of more than 13,000, Olympic College offers four year degrees in nursing, in-

ma center. The centerpiece of Harrison Medical Center’s Silverdale campus is an outpatient surgery center and a women’s and children’s center. Harrison boasts an impressive range of specialties, services and programs, provided by a staff of 2,500 and a medical staff of 328. The hospital is part of the Franciscan Health System. A new wing for orthopedic surgeries was opened in 2014 and the hospital is in the process of a $240 million expansion that will include a medical building, parking lot, increasing the number of beds from 94 to 240, and later adding a tower that will bring the number of beds up to 350. This is their vision for 2020. Harrison HealthPartners also operates three clinics in Silverdale with 12 employees. Another large medical provider in Silverdale is The Doctor’s Clinic, which includes physicians offices and an urgent care center. The Doctors Clinic has 10 locations and about 80 physicians working in Kitsap County. Naval Hospital Bremerton provides care to more than 60,000 military, family members and retirees who live within the hospital’s beneficiary base. Don’t let that “home town” feeling fool you. Silverdale offers a wealth of opportunities in the visual and performing arts just a short trip away. CSTOCK community theater offers performances by local actors at a Central Kitsap middle school, with plans to build a new theater in 2017. There’s an art walk on the first Thursday of each month. FESTIVALS New to Silverdale is the annual Kitsap Peninsula National Water Trails Festival that began in 2015 after the designation of a national water trail by the National Park Service. The Kitsap Fair and Stampede Rodeo takes place on five days in late August. 4-H animal exhibitions, a carnival midway, arts and crafts displays, big name entertainment and more await visitors each year. The Stampede Rodeo has recently been in top contention for the Best Small Rodeo at National Final Rodeos. The Thunderbird Pro Rodeo comes to Thunderbird Arena in late June. It is the largest Northwest Professional Rodeo Association (NPRA) event in Washington State and was voted the Best Rodeo in the NPRA in 2007. The event raises funds for Corey’s Day on the Farm (a farm experience for children) and the Northwest Burn Foundation. Summer just isn’t complete without the fun of baseball. is currently located at 3450 NW Carlton St. It began as a modified 16-by-16 Army surplus building in 1945 and has not been expanded since 1980. Since that time, the demands on the library have increased dramatically. With only 5,000 square feet and 14 parking spots, the Silverdale location is still one of the busiest libraries in Kitsap. Hence, a $7 million campaign is underway to build a new library on a 1.3-acre site at the

corner of Blaine Avenue and Bucklin Hill Road. In late 2015, fundraising allowed the library to purchase the site and hopes are that construction will begin in 2017. The new property borders an estuary, salmon spawning stream and a network of trails.
