SERVING WHIDBEY ISLAND’S VETERANS, RETIRED MILITARY PERSONNEL AND FAMILIES

NAS Whidbey to hold open house in June By RON NEWBERRY

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island will celebrate its 75th anniversary with an open house on Saturday, June 24 at Ault Field. The open house is a chance for the public to learn more about the base’s present, past and future operations. The open house is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. It provides educational opportunities for adults and a chance for kids to have fun. The event will feature aircraft static displays that will include the EA-18G Growler, P-3C Orion, MH-60 Knighthawk helicopter, the new C-40 Clipper and a visiting P-8A Poseidon, which will soon replace the P-3 Orions on Whidbey. Planned aerial demonstrations include the Growler, P-3C Orion and Search and Rescue helicopter. There are rumblings that a PBY seaplane,

the first operational aircraft at the Whidbey installation, dating back to 1942, could be part of the festivities. “We are trying to get other aircraft,” said Mike Welding, public affairs officer at NAS Whidbey. “We don’t have confirmation yet.

“Once we know for sure, we’ll put something out.” NAS Whidbey, named the Navy’s Installation of the year in 2016, is the only air station in the Pacific Northwest. It was commissioned Sept. 21, 1942 at the Seaplane Base. The 75-year anniversary will be recognized at the open house, though another event honoring the occasion will take place in September, Welding said. The open house also will include visual displays, guided bus tours, K-9 working dog demonstrations, bouncy toys for children and a climbing wall.

Crowds check out aircraft last year during the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island open house. Aviation memorabilia also will be available for purchase as will be food and beverages. Visitors over the age of 18 will be required to have state or government issued identification for access to the base.

As a security measure, the public will not be allowed to enter with large bags, backpacks, coolers, pets or any weapons including pocket knives. Strollers, diaper bags, small women’s purses, wheelchairs, service dogs, bottled water, cameras are video recorders will be permitted.

Fundraiser a building block toward new museum By RON NEWBERRY

he goal of the PBY Memorial Foundation is to build a new hangar-style naval air museum in Oak Harbor. Wil Shellenberger, president of the foundation, has big dreams for such a facility, envisioning a structure that houses revered naval aircraft associated with Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, along with other historical treasures. Since the day the present PBY-Naval Air Museum moved to its current location inside a former furniture store on Pioneer Way in the spring of 2014, Shellenberger has maintained such a vision. A step toward putting that plan in motion will take place May 20 when the foundation holds its first major fundraising event, the Celebration of Flight Dinner and Auction at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge. The foundation is going big with this first annual event, acquiring two on-air personalities from Seattle in hopes of making the occasion both memorable and entertaining. Mark Christopher, a

longtime radio and TV host who is presently the weekend news anchor at KOMO Radio, is teaming up with Jim Dever, host and producer of KING 5’s Evening Magazine, to host the event. Christopher will be the emcee and Dever the auctioneer. Christopher has a soft spot for naval aviation history and Whidbey Island’s in particular. His father, the late George Thelen, was a PBY pilot during World War II and one of the first flight instructors at the Whidbey installation. “We have a pretty strong connection in Seattle with supporters down there,” Shellenberger said. “That’s one of the things that led to bringing Mark and Jim Dever up here.” “It sounds like it’s going to be a fun event to get it off the ground, no pun intended,” Dever said. “OK, pun intended.” Dever said he and Christopher have hosted such events together before. “He’s the heart and soul of this story because of his family connection, and it’s so important to him,” Dever said. “I just look forward to supporting it. I think it’s going to be a really fun event and it ties

Auction items include condo stays in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Whistler, B.C., a sevennight Holland America cruise, dinner, fishing trips,

The museum has expanded since moving from the Seaplane Base three years ago, adding a space across the street that showcases a PBY-5A Catalina that once flew out of Whidbey as well as a 1946 Ford Command Staff Car. PBYs were the first aircraft to operate out of the Seaplane Base at NAS Whidbey, starting in the fall of 1942.

exhibits, including the PBY aircraft, and provide storage. The structure would be the first part of a fourphase construction process, Shellenberger said. Two properties near State Highway 20 have been identified as potential sites to pursue. “It is going to be a substantial building in the end,” Shellenberger said. “Even if it’s not right on the highway, it will still be visible from the highway.” Last year, Oak Harbor residents John and Norma Berto pledged $20,000 to go specifically toward building a new museum if the community can match it. John Berto died in November, but the offer remains, Shellenberger said. “We hope to raise even more than that,” he said. Those interested in attending the Celebration of Flight Dinner and Auction may reserve seats by calling 360240-9500 or stop by the PBY-Naval Air Museum at 270 SE Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor.

The museum is running out of places to display donated items. Presently, many artifacts are stored in nearby buildings, including documents, hundreds of uniforms and larger items such as crates full of unopened beaching gear, packed in 1943. The Pioneer Way location was never intended to be permanent, Shellenberger said. Relocation there became necessary after the foundation’s five-year lease with NAS Whidbey at the Naval Heritage Center expired. There are two years remaining on the current lease at the Pioneer Way site and two one-year options after that. A capital improvement task force is working on plans for a new museum, Shellenberger said. It is the goal of the foundation to start construction of a new hangar-style building at a more visible site in Oak Harbor in two-to-three years, Shellenberger said. The multi-purpose building would feature more room for

Former Whidbey Navy ‘brat’ writes poem of unity By DANIEL WARN

In the early 70s, when Natalie Park was in sixth grade, she spent much of her free time riding her horse across Whidbey, from trail to trail, field to field, shore to shore. Yet she only remained on the island for one year. That’s because she was a self-described military brat. Photo provided

childhoods of people like his stepdaughter.

To that end, Park wrote a poem, called “Soul Brats,” describing the common experience and bond that military children develop.

While Park said she is now well adjusted, she didn’t always appreciate the journey.

“I saw that it was the month of the military child, and I had recently been asked to join a Facebook group,” Park said in an email, referring to the month of April. “Other brats were posting poems, but not related to brat life. I took a moment to be reflective and the emotions from my upbringing came to the surface.” Park’s stepdad, Whidbey resident Admiral Bill McDaniel, retired U.S. Navy, said “Soul Brats” accurately portrayed the

“It was a remarkable effort to capture the essence of what military kids have to go through,” McDaniel said.

“I remember moving to Spain and being unhappy about leaving my friends in California around ninth grade,” she said. “I was rather negative in my mood and finally my dad said, ‘If you can’t say something positive, keep quiet.’ “I mulled it over and realized he was right — the only attitude that made sense was to make the best of it, look for the new good in the new place and people.” Park said her new perspecCONTINUED PAGE 5

FROM PAGE 4 tive paid off, but in a bittersweet way. She developed a friendship with a boy named Max Montgomery and learned to love Naval Station Rota, Spain. But Montgomery’s family received new orders, and after tears and goodbyes, he was shipped off to somewhere else. At least, that’s what they thought. “Surprise, two days later Max turns up again; there was a delay,” she said. “It was bittersweet and more painful to let go again.” This kind of bond, though, tender and tough, is the type of ties the bind all military kids together, she said. Now a geologist from Aiken, S.C., Park said that because of her upbringing, she can talk to anyone and can love everyone. “This is definitely a byproduct of ‘brat life’ as I was a very shy, introverted child before the travel started,” she said. “Then I discovered shy was just not going to be much fun if we were only going to be there a short time — there was no time to waste getting to know people.” She said she wants to reach out to the Whidbey community, a place that is in her heart, because she knows that so many relate to her story, have lived it themselves. “I mainly wrote (the poem) for the camaraderie with other brats because we share a unique toughness and melancholy due to our roving lifestyle,” she said. “What I would like civilians to understand is that we want to be accepted, welcomed, even though we won’t share the same history with them.”
