Fraser’s ‘art of giving’ holds strong in daily life By PATRICIA GUTHRIE

pguthrie@whidbeynewsgroup.com

Ask Scott Fraser about his volunteerism spirit on view in Oak Harbor year round, and he’s sure to evoke the name Keith Bartlett. A local restaurant owner like Fraser, Bartlett began cooking and serving a free Thanksgiving Day dinner in 2001, opening his Pot Belly Deli to all. The holiday dinner turned into an annual tradition. Now called the North Whidbey Community Harvest Celebration, it continued after Bartlett’s 2004 death and annually hosts some 3,000 people and attracts hundreds of volunteers and sponsoring businesses. Bartlett became Fraser’s role model when he opened his own restaurant, Frasers Gourmet Hideaway, in 2005. Years earlier, Bartlett had asked Fraser to join him in the large-scale cooking effort and the two bonded over preparing turkey and trimmings. “It wasn’t just to feed the poor,” Fraser said of Bartlett’s idea. “He was adamant that we have a gift in the restaurant business in that we know how to feed lots of people and that we should organize and create a community gathering.” Fraser credits Bartlett for “changing a lot of peoples’ lives, like myself, because he had such a giving spirit. He taught me that Oak Harbor is a small enough community that you can really make a difference.” Known for his long, twirling mustache that’s become the logo of his Oak Harbor restaurant, Fraser followed in Bartlett’s footsteps when he came up with the idea of

Chef Scott Fraser, owner of Frasers Gourmet Hideaway, was voted best community volunteer. a summertime PigFest to thank his customers and community. He approached other local businesses on Fidalgo Avenue and they all somehow agreed to his idea of closing off the street, roasting thousands of pounds of pork and giving it all away in a day-long barbecue. “It started as a block party, as a way to say ’thank you’ and a day to enjoy our community,” he said. “We invited everyone in the whole city to see what our little block was all about.” Celebrating its 10th anniversary Aug. 13, PigFest has become a popular destina-

tion for professional barbecuers to vie for prizes, and for thousands of residents and visitors to stand in long lines to feast on plenty of pork, listen to live music and participate in many family events. Last year, some 15,000 people attended. Although the fest is free, it’s also raised thousands of dollars for various non-profit organizations over the years. Fraser, who adopted Oak Harbor as his home some 26 years ago after wandering south from British Columbia, is also mentor to hundreds of aspiring chefs. He’s led Oak Harbor High School’s

nationally touted culinary arts program for years. It finished second among 6,000 schools in 2010; 16th this past school year and regularly tops the state competition. A few of his graduates have also landed jobs in top-notch restaurants. Fraser’s triad of community service hasn’t gone unnoticed by others in his field. In 2015, Frasers Gourmet Hideaway was recognized as the Washington Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Neighbor Award winner in the small restaurant category. The award celebrates outstanding charitable service by restaurant operators. The following year, Fraser received the organization’s humanitarian award. It specifically honors an individual restaurant operator for his or her personal commitment to community service. Despite his year-round volunteering efforts, Fraser continues to insist he’s getting the better end of the deal. “It makes you feel great giving back to the community,” he said, sitting outside on his restaurant porch reflecting on his seasonal schedule of giving. “When one event ends, planning for the next begins. And I try and run a restaurant at the same time,” he jokes. Although Fraser admits, “sometimes it’s hard to get started,” on the next cookingfor-a cause undertaking, he has no plans to slow down. “It’s one of the most rewarding feelings when you see how the community comes out, when you see how much can happen. It almost becomes addictive. “Keith (Bartlett) definitely instilled the art of giving in me.”

Voters name island’s top recreational spots By EVAN THOMPSON

ethompson@whidbeynewsgroup.com

The outdoors is what makes Whidbey Island special. People come from far and wide to enjoy the scenic vistas of farmland with the Cascades as a backdrop and the stony beaches that connect to the Puget Sound. Outdoor enthusiasts are right at home with miles of shoreline and walking trails, lakes filled with fish and easy-to-access boat launches and the numerous parks scattered up and down the 58-mile length of the island. Best of Whidbey voters chose their favorite spots to recreate, a task not easily done with what Whidbey has to be offer. But, it should come as no surprise that voters hold Deception Pass State Park in high esteem. It took first place in Best Beach, Best for Bird Watching, Best Campground, Best Fishing, Best Hiking, Best View and Best Park. There are 4,000 acres to explore in the park, which features walking trails through oldgrowth forests as well as horse and bike trails. There is also the scenic Deception Pass Bridge, which connects the northernmost tip of Whidbey Island to mainland, and provides line of

sight to Strawberry Island and Deception Island. Winning “Best Beach” may have had something to do with the state park’s saltwater beaches that fit the desires of those wanting to do some beachcombing or explore tide pools. Deeper into the park, three freshwater lakes can be found, with Cranberry Lake serving as a favorite swimming spot during the summer months. Double Bluff, one of South Whidbey’s prime jewels in terms of beaches, was runner up in the “Best Beach” competition. The best bike route was awarded to the Kettles Trail System, while Fort Ebey was second. The Kettles Trail System, located throughout Central Whidbey, features moderate climbs and rides through second-growth forests. It also providers walkers and riders the opportunity to be among kettles, which were formed by the retreating Vashon Glacier at the end of the last ice age. Crescent Harbor in Oak Harbor was voted as the best crabbing spot on Whidbey. The harbor is a popular destination during crabbing season, as it typically fills up with boats on the hunt for the Dungeness variety.

A career shaped from simple childhood desire By DANIEL WARN

dwarn@whidbeynewsgroup.com

Those that want dog-training lessons and private canine tips need look no further than Whidbey’s very own dog whisperer — Corinne Boon, winner of the Best of Whidbey award in the dog training category. Boon’s journey as a dog trainer began right after she graduated… grade school. “I wanted a dog when I was 13, and my parents said I could have a dog if I joined 4-H and trained it, because they didn’t want to have a wild dog in the house,” Boon said. “So I joined 4-H and got my first dog.” As it turns out, Boon bonded with a dog that could have been too much of a handful for other 13-year-olds — a Doberman that she named Rusty. Like other dogs in her breed, Rusty had a lot of energy, so Boon said the first skills 4-H helped her develop with her furry friend involved self-control. “She was a Doberman, so I trained her to heel — which is walking by your side quietly — and sit and stay and recall,” Boon said. “Everyone’s afraid of big, scary dogs, so I taught her all kinds of cute tricks so people would like her and not be afraid of her.” Boon said she was inspired by the 4-H program. What started as a keen desire to own and love a dog grew into a passion for all dogs, she said. She competed in 4-H competitions until she

aged out of the program at 18. Each competition taught her a different lesson, honed her skills as a dog trainer at every wag, until all her hard work took her and her four-legged companion to the state level. “4-H gave me a platform to share my love of dogs with everybody,” Boon said. “Later, I became a 4-H leader for 35 years, and all of our children grew up training dogs in 4-H.” Boon has since turned her passion for dogs into a couple of business enterprises. One such business is called Corinne’s K-9 Cuts, a dog grooming salon she runs in a shop attached to her house in Oak Harbor, she said. For Boon, dog grooming and training go hand-in-hand, because one has to understand how a dog responds and reacts to give a good cut. “I’ve been grooming dogs for about the same amount of time (as training them),” she said. “I worked at a veterinary clinic when I CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

was 16 and learned how to groom dogs.” Boon said dogs have stolen her heart so irretrievably that she has molded her professional and volunteer activities to revolve around them. Dog training isn’t the least of these pursuits. “I love people and their dogs,” Boon said. “They come to me with problems that I try to help them figure out — why is their dog barking, why is their dog jumping, why is their dog chasing the skateboard.” She also admitted that calling the shots at her own businesses has its own perks. But she doesn’t mean she’s glad

she doesn’t get bossed around. Rather, she’s glad she has the freedom to help so many people. “It’s fun to be your own boss and be around people that love their animal — they don’t just have their dog tied up outside,” Boon said. “They’re bringing it here to get it beautiful, and they want to figure out ‘how to get my dog to not eat the inside of my car.’ So I just try to help people with dogs.” One of the greatest joys of Boon’s life is showing her Smooth Collies. She said training them and learning with them is as important for each dog as it is for their owner.

“The more you train your dog — they never stop learning — the bigger connection you have with your dog,” she said. “People just have a dog because they think they have to have a dog, but they don’t even teach it to sit; you don’t even know what it can learn until you try.” Boon has made herself available to help community members train their dogs. She offers limited classes for obedience training. Every session is four weeks long, with a total of eight classes in each. Call 360 675-0950 for more information. Looking back, Boon said she was humbled to realize that much of the paths of her life were shaped by one, simple childhood desire. “I just wanted a dog,” Boon said,” but you can’t just have a dog; you have to have a good dog… Everyone wants to be around a well-behaved dog, but nobody wants to be around to big dog that claws them or the little dog that barks and bites them. Training helps people keep their dog.” It’s Boon’s mission to help make that happen.

Aesthetician in business of making clients ‘feel good’ By MEGAN HANSEN

mhansen@whidbeynewsgroup.com

For aesthetician Melissa York, community and relationships are a big part of her life and career. Her clients aren’t just people who pass through her door for a facial or hair removal. York gets to know them, forms bonds and even friendships with some. “For the most part I develop close connections with my clients,” she said. “I seem to find clients who’ve had tragedy in their lives and they feel comfortable here. This is a safe place.” York is no stranger to tragedy. She moved to Whidbey Island in 2007 after her brother-in-law was killed in Iraq and she came to help her sister raise her two young nieces. The community rallied around and embraced York and her family during that time, and in turn she says she always tries to pay that back. “This is a personal relationship business and I worked hard to establish those relationships,” she said. It’s that mentality that has helped York build a

Her male clientele continues to increase as body hair removal becomes more mainstream. “I do get people who have a lot of body hair and it makes them self conscious,” York said. She also makes it a point to focus her full attention on clients during appointments. “I really believe they are paying me for my time,” York said. “They’re entrusting me with their body and hard-earned money.” “We’re in this business to make our clients feel good.”

Learning Whidbey through a camera lens By KYLE JENSEN

kjensen@whidbeynewsgroup.com

When it comes to owning a photography business, success can come with simply saying “yes” to the varied photography demands of clients, no matter the request. Well, at least that’s been Useless Bay-based photographer Michael Stadler’s recipe for success on Whidbey Island. “It’s hard to categorize my photography style in that I do a lot of different kind of work,” Stadler said. “I do real estate photography, I work with artists promoting their work, I do portrait and wedding shots. Basically, I’m here to help if you need something photogenic.” Stadler’s varied work appears to sit well with those he’s worked with. Stadler was voted “Best Photographer” by readers in the 2017 Best of Whidbey contest. It’s his second time winning the award, after claiming the title in 2014. Stadler, 35, is one of the go-to photographers on the island when it comes to portrait shots and weddings. His downtown Langley studio is decorated with a number of images from previous shots set on Whidbey’s beaches, meadows and bluffs. But he

Michael Stadler, of Langley’s Stadler Studios, was the reader’s choice for “Best Photographer” in the 2017 Best of Whidbey contest. Stadler specializes in portrait, wedding and real estate photography. doesn’t limit himself to portraits and weddings, even though that’s where a good chunk of his money tends to come from. Stadler also takes photographs of artists’ pieces and works

with real estate agents across the South End, finding the best angles of homes in order to help the realtors better advertise the homes. “Doing the real estate thing is a

great way for a photographer like me to see these different sides of the island that I wouldn’t know about otherwise,” Stadler said. “It helps, because now I’m very in tuned with the island. I know

where the sun will be at certain times, I know the when the tides change and all of that.” Like anyone using a creative medium, Stadler also has his artistic outlet with what he calls “photo illustrations,” multimedia images that blend portions of pictures together into a new piece, similar to graphic design. Generally, he approaches his photography in an artistic way. “Visually creating a world of my own is what captured me (about photography),” Stadler said. “You make the world in each picture by setting the mood and working with people. You have to be kind of a psychologist when you’re taking people’s picture.” Through growing up on Whidbey and later through his work, Stadler has come to know the island well. He says he has clients he’s photographed for their high school graduation and wedding, and later of their kids. Stadler credits his knowledge of the community to much of his success. And now Whidbey Islanders are paying it back. “I’ve built so many relationships with others, and it feels nice to be recognized,” Stadler said.
