Seanotes FROM PAGE 2 grade school. The Seanotes fit that bill. “When I first joined the band, we were just a group of people that got together in the back of the Knights of Columbus playing for the fun of it,” Williams said. “We didn’t expect it to see the light of day.”
The Seanotes’ saxophone line provides the melody for dancers to swing to June 17 at the Elks Lodge in Oak Harbor.
But as the group practiced, it grew in skill, Williams said, noting his astonishment and pride that the band plays its own gigs now. And according to Seltveit, swing music’s renewed popularity has helped the band swing into success. “Swing seems to have a surge back and forth in popularity,” Seltveit said. “It has its pendulum, and it’s starting to swing back again — we’re starting to get popular again.” Williams said he considers it a pure joy that he has been able to help the Seanotes share the gift of swing with Oak Harbor over the past 25 years of his membership. “A lot of people have come
and gone, both service-members and civilians, but thankfully a lot of people have stayed,” Williams said. “The Seanotes have made it possible for decades of musicians to realize the dream of making the big-band music that we so much enjoy.” The Seanotes Big Band’s next performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Oak Harbor Elks Lodge, 155 NE Ernst St.. Students donate ammo truck to park High School class builds replica from 1896 plans
enjoyed it, because I’ve been going to Fort Casey for years and there’s always all these old pictures,” Garsten said. “It was definitely a different experience being able to look at all of these old blueprints and kind of have to decipher what it was.” Longtime volunteer Dick Malone, who accepted the ammo cart on behalf of Fort Casey, said the project was just the latest in a long line of excellent work the high school kids have been involved with.

Oak Harbor High School metalworking students completed a replica of a turn-of-the-century ammo truck and donated the fabrication to Fort Casey this spring. Four of Jerry Mumper’s metal fabrication students completed the project over the past two and a half years. They are Joshua Garsten, projected class of 2018; Alan Aebersold, class of 2017; Sam Zook, class of 2017; and Kai Ahner, class of 2015. The students worked with a photocopy of the original 1896 plans and managed to use the blueprints to build a near-exact version of the truck. The only snag was that some details in the plans were illegible and had to be improvised. Mumper said the students showed ingenuity by cross-refer-

When it comes to supporting Oak Harbor veterans of foreign war, it’s all in the family.

The VFW Auxiliary is a network of spouses, children, parents, grandparents and grandchildren that supports veterans by running its own patriotic programming, as well as supporting the activities of the VFW. “The VFW and its Auxiliaries are dedicated to veterans service, legislative advocacy and military and community service programs,” VFW Auxiliary Post 7392 president Teresa Coe said in a press release. As the president of Oak Harbor’s auxiliary, Coe finds herself recruiting new members as often as she can and educating the public on what it truly means to be patriotic. “I’ve been able to help local veterans… and help correct people every once in a while — like telling people they’re doing the flag all wrong, but saying it politely,” Coe said. “So part of what we do is patriotic instruction,” she
added. “We have the ability to go to elementary schools, and we have all kinds of brochures and pamphlets that teach about the pledge, what it means, what you’re saying it for and how to say it correctly.” Furthermore, the auxiliary boasts local scholarship programs and supports its umbrella organization’s macro scholarships at the state and

Unsung heroes: Maintenance crew supports SAR’s job By PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS SCOTT WOOD

Heroes always stand behind heroes. This doesn’t ring more true than for Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Search and Rescue (SAR) maintenance crew. While the public recognizes the daring rescues of the MH-60S helicopters and the team manning them, there’s a team in the background constantly at work ensuring these aircraft can fly and do their job. “Being a plane captain, working out in the line shack, you’re the last person to look over that aircraft and say that every single thing on that aircraft is where it’s supposed to be,” said Aviation Structural Mechanic 2nd Class Naomi Beck, line shack supervisor for the SAR MH-60S helicopters. “You’re the last person to
look at that aircraft and sign off saying this aircraft can support the people in it and go out and support the mission. All that happened because I was able to look at an aircraft and say this can help save lives,” Beck added. Being the team out of the spotlight, pride for the maintenance crew runs deep. This pride is no longer dependent on external recognition but an internal satisfaction knowing that one’s job is done and done well. “I’m here to put out a problem. I’m concerned with productivity. Whatever I’ve got to do to be productive, to allow these guys to be productive and put that product out, that’s what I do,” said Maintenance Lead Dan Champlin, speaking about the potential stressors of the job and having to ensure the helicopters are ready to go at the turn of a dial.

Champlin conveyed his own internal satisfaction by asking a question, “Would you put your mother in this airplane and let her go fly? To a man, it was yes.” “What you’re saying is you’re doing a good enough job you’re going to put your loved ones in there, and you feel good about it,” he explained. Champlin mentioned there’s always the inherent frustrations that come with any job and that it’s easy to get bogged down in such details, but when asked what makes the job worth it, a slight grin came to his face as he answered, “There’s a great deal of pride that swells up in you because you’re a part of it and that, I think, is the best part of the job, because you’re a part of something bigger than yourself.” Champlin seemed to speak
