With nearly 80,000 residents, Auburn is now the fifteenth largest city in our state. Whether you have lived here a lifetime, or just a few years, we are all experiencing the exciting changes throughout our city during this unprecedented period of growth. We are seeing our downtown core continue to be revitalized with new businesses and housing, and we are watching as innovative companies from around the globe continue to invest in our community. From satellite development by Spaceflight Industries to family fun at the West Coast’s first Dave and Busters, Auburn has become

Auburn School District-Engage, Educate, Empower Welcome to the Auburn School District! I would like to highlight some successes and let you know what’s coming up in the future. First, we have record enrollment this year, almost 16,500 students in our 22 schools. Auburn is a great place to live and raise a family and our enrollment shows it! Our incredible community passed a $456 million bond in November, 2016 and we are now on the path to replacing six of our aging schools and building two new elementary schools. We will break ground on the new Olympic Middle School in March. The support and strong commitment

of our community will contribute to our success for generations. Last June, our School Board adopted a new strategic plan to guide us through the coming years. The plan was created with staff and diverse community input and will guide our work for the next five years. We have three big goals of increased attendance and engagement, high achievement and 100 percent graduation for each student. Look for more information about our progress towards these lofty goals. This fall, we achieved our goal of targeted 1:1 technology for all

students thanks to the technology levy passed in 2014. Students are not just learning how to use technology, they are learning how to learn with technology. It is transforming personalized learning for all students. In Auburn, we want each student to be successful and are looking at everything we do with a lens of equity. A large contingent of teachers, principals, support staff and administrators are participating in deep equity training to provide more tools to close the achievement gaps for students of every race and family income level. PROUD TRADITION: VETERANS DAY PARADE Honoring veterans is a tradition in the City of Auburn. And for the past 52 years, the Veterans Day Parade has acknowledged the sacrifices made by American veterans, past and present, with one of the largest processions west of the Mississippi. The mile-long parade typically lasts about two hours, featuring marching bands, ROTC units, re-enactors, active military units and military vehicles from all eras. Last year's parade featured more than 200 entries and nearly 6,000 parade participants, showcasing American strength of will, endurance and purpose. The parade included more than 330 marching bands, including the 56th First Corps Army Band, Navy Band

Northwest and the 133D Washington National Guard Band. Auburn is designated by the Veterans Day National Committee and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a regional site for the celebration of Veterans Day. The 53rd edition of the tradition is Nov. 10 on Main Street.

Auburn's gem: Community & Events Center

Set in scenic Les Gove Park, the Auburn Community & Event Center has become a go-to place since opening in 2016. Designed by ARC Architects and built by general contractor Pease Construction Inc., the facility at the north end of the park is a central community gathering space that includes spaces to encourage cross-generational and cross-cultural interactions with neighboring facilities, including the Auburn Senior Activity Center, the Gymnasium, the White River Valley Museum and the Auburn Library. Auburn’s center is approximately 13,700

square feet and includes three divisible rooms for public and private events, classes, meetings, and celebrations; a classroom/meeting room; fitness room with cardio and resistance machines; storage areas; and the Parks, Arts & Recreation administration offices. The fireplace is the focal point of the lobby and includes a commissioned public art piece designed by artist Virginia Paquette. The artwork serves as the surround to the fireplace and was cut and configured from one tree that was reclaimed from Les Gove Park. The work symbolizes the White and

Green rivers’ confluence, and the Auburn community coming together at this site. The 7,300-square-foot REC Teen Center was created by renovating the City’s Parks, Recreation and Arts Administration Building. The REC includes an informal gathering space intended for informal gathering, games and socializing as well as structured programs. Shared spaces include a lobby, teaching/ catering kitchen and outdoor terraces. The City of Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Department oversees operations of the facilities, including rental opportunities. Call 253-931-3043 for reservation information.

ARE YOU PREPARED? Being prepared can change everything. By planning ahead, you can increase the chances of survival for you and your family, not to mention gain peace of mind knowing you are in control. Catastrophes can happen at any time. Preparing for three days will help you make it through many of the disasters you’ll face in the Puget Sound region, including major storms and even small earthquakes. However, to make it through a major catastrophe, like Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, you’ll need to be prepared for longer, at least 7 to 10 days. Catastrophes can happen at any time and are likely to happen here. Imagine you are at work, on the road, or at home during a catastrophe. How would you communicate with loved ones? Are you prepared to survive without essential services, such as running water, electricity, or phones for 7 to 10 days?

Make a family emergency communication plan, identify an out-of-state contact Plan for people, pets and property Review and practice your emergency plan

Build a kit for at least 7 to 10 days Save important documents/records on USB drives, store one at home and one in a safety deposit box Create customized kits for home, office and vehicle

Get involved – Create networks of neighbors and coworkers, work together to pool resources Participate in a training – CPR, first aid, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) Learn how to reduce hazards (e.g. shutting off gas supply if needed, strap water heater in place, etc.)

20 Auburn 2018 Residents’ Guide

BUILD A KIT FOR AT LEAST 7 TO 10 DAYS Imagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of minor injuries and access to resources will likely be limited. Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort. Identify a storage container or key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, first aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate; be sure to include a backpack or similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go. Many of these supplies you may already have at home. Below are suggested basic supplies to survive for 7 to 10 days. Q Water – one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation Q Food – at least 7 to 10 day supply of non-perishable food per person Q Cash – ATMs won’t work without electricity Q Battery-powered radio and extra batteries Q Flashlight and extra batteries Q First aid kit Q Whistle to signal for help Q Filter mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air Q Moist towelettes for sanitation Q Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities if needed Q Manual can opener for food Q Shelter items like tents, tarps and rope Q Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation Q Unique family needs: supplies for infants, pets and elderly, prescriptions, and important family documents Local agencies across Puget Sound are teaming up to share information and encourage residents to prepare for catastrophic events with this regional campaign, WHAT TO DO TO MAKE IT THROUGH. What he found, or what found him, was a Federal-Way based nonprofit called Orion Industries, today settled in just north of the park and ride on 15th Street Northwest in Auburn, where it provides job training and community job placement. In his Auburn office last week, the president and COO of Auburn-based Orion Industries described his life today. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had,” Theisen said. “In 2016, we placed 157 people into community jobs, compared to 17 in 2000,” Theisen said. “These are individuals who have never worked or thought they’d never work again, people that a lot of employers would have considered unemployable. But they come into Orion and get two kinds of training: training in technical

skills for one, but they also get what we call soft-skill training. People that lose their job, it generally isn’t because of their lack of technical skills, it’s because of the soft skills: showing up on time; how to interface with a team and with a supervisor; productivity, quality and things like that.” “Our mission today is we serve a broader range of people,” Theisen said. “Our mission no longer reads ’people with disabilities;’ it reads ‘people with barriers to employment.’ We still provide services to people with disabilities, but we also work with people who are transitioning out of homelessness, people transitioning out of the criminal justice system and transitioning out of drug and alcohol programs.” And for the job he does, the Auburn Reporter has named Theisen, “an operations guy,” its 2017 Person of the Year.
