Save the date for Peninsula expo submitted by LINDSAY FOX Couples planning on a 2019/2020 wedding are encouraged save the date for the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce’s annual Olympic Peninsula Wedding Expo, slated for Sunday, Jan. 27, in Port Angeles, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Planning your wedding should be exciting and enjoyable. The Olympic Peninsula Wedding Expo was created to provide couples, along with their friends and families, with information about local vendors and to provide great tools to make the planning process easier. Come to the show to meet, discuss and plan your big day with all of the best local wedding professionals. The expo will take place at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., with a number of new vendors in attendance. According to experts, wedding spending has reached an all-time high. More than ever, couples are looking to make their special day both unique and individualized. That trend also has found its way to the Olympic Peninsula. Over the past few years, expo officials have noticed a growth in the wedding industry on the Peninsula with many more local businesses cropping up and offering a variety of wedding-related services. Also, after working with many soon-to-be married couples, they have come to realize there is a local disconnect; the bride, groom and their families don’t often know what services and vendors are available in the area. They are constantly receiving inquiries and calls asking for contacts for venues, caterers, DJs, florists, photographers, designers, makeup artists and more. The growing need for event services has encouraged more vendors to participate. Officials have lined up an array of Olympic Peninsula wedding professionals, from venue owners and dress designers to florists, photographers, caterers, DJs and everything in between. They are excited to offer a more interactive experience, with beautiful design showcases and more features to delight and engage guests. Tickets ($5) include entry into raffles for door prizes, gift bags for brides, a complimentary glass of sparkling

Get the most out of bridal shows, wedding events Bridal shows can be a great way for couples to meet and familiarize themselves with local wedding professionals, all the while introducing themselves to the terminology of wedding planning. Though they’re a great source of information, contacts and samples, bridal shows also can be a bit overwhelming. Learning how to maximize time spent at shows can help couples plan their weddings as efficiently as possible. • Come prepared. Chances are each vendor is going to ask couples for information so they can follow up with a phone call or email with more detailed offerings and estimates. Couples attending the show can expedite the process by coming equipped with labels that feature their names, contact information and wedding date. They can then stick the labels on sign-in sheets or use them like business cards. • Dress comfortably. Bridal expos involve a lot of walking and roaming around. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Consider a backpack or hands-free bag so you are not weighed down when collecting the swag and other handouts throughout the day. • Ask questions. When face-to-face with vendors, rely on their expertise, but don’t hesitate to ask questions concerning themes, colors, honeymoon location recommendations, paper/invitation suggestions, etc. — METROCREATIVE

Get schooled on terminology C
ouples about to embark on their wedding journeys will likely learn a thing or two about party planning once their engagements are over and they are newly married. Wedding planning can seem overwhelming and a tad confusing at times, but a crash course in wedding terminology can help couples make more informed choices along the way. • BLUSHER: A short, single-layer veil that covers the bride’s face before the ceremony. • CANAPÉS: Bite-sized appetizers served during the cocktail hour of a reception. • CIVIL CEREMONY: A marriage ceremony conducted by a council official or justice of the peace at a municipal location rather than in a house of worship. • CORKAGE FEE: A fee some establishments charge to allow guests to bring their own wine. • DAIS: A podium or platform raised from the floor where the bride and groom are seated. • DRAGÉES: Round, small edible balls of sugar that appear on wedding cakes.
• ESCORT (SEATING) CARDS: Printed cards that direct reception guests to their seats. • HANDLE WRAP: Ribbon or fabric that wraps around the stems of a bouquet the bride and wedding party carries. • MAID/MATRON OF HONOR: The title given to the woman who assists the bride and stands closest to her at the altar. “Maids” are those who are unmarried, while “matrons” are women who are. • MASTER OF CEREMONIES: An individual who will work with the DJ or band to announce the various components of the wedding reception. • NOSEGAY: A small bouquet or flower arrangement typically given to the mothers of the bride and groom before the ceremony. • PROCESSIONAL/RECESSIONAL: Musical pieces that mark the entrance and exit from the wedding ceremony. • RECEIVING LINE: A line of the key people in the wedding who welcome and greet guests. • TABLESCAPE: A word that describes the multiple components of centerpiece designs. — METROCREATIVE

A family affair to remember After reigniting a spark, the Lotzgesells of Sequim find love all over again at their wedding on the family farm story by PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
photos by TIM O’NEILL, JIM HAGEN & ROY KROPP
T
hey could never quite get the timing right in their earlier years of knowing each other. But for Allison Lippert and Garrett Lotzgesell, the stars finally aligned at just the right moment, and they will be happily married for a year come July 14. The newly-married Lotzgesells of Sequim went to Sequim High School together, and back then there was a connection. “There was always a spark between us, but the timing was never right,” Allison said in an email interview with Peninsula Daily News. “Then Garrett went to the U.S. Air Force, and I worked on a cruise ship. We both went out and lived our lives and found out who we were. “We always had updates on each other because I knew his parents and grandparents well. “I think it was always meant to be! In 2016, Garrett moved home and we ran into each other. At the moment, there was a spark. Three months later, we went on our
first date, and the rest is our love story.” Things developed very quickly between Garrett and Allison. “Once we started dating, we became inseparable. We did everything together,” she said. The two frequently attended bonfires at the Lotzgesell family farm, getting to know each other after spending several years apart. To say these two were falling for each other is an understatement. “One night, a few months after we started dating, it was all apparent. There was a moment around the fire that seemed like time slowed down for a minute. We looked at each other and smiled, and we knew (that) some day we would get married. We were each other’s forever,” Allison said. “That was the first time he told me he loved me!” On June 8, 2017, Garrett proposed to Allison at the Del Dotto Vineyards in St. Helena, Calif. They were married at the Lotzgesell family farm in
Sequim on July 14, 2018. The day of their wedding was a hot one (the high was in the low 80s) but according to Allison, their wedding day was “literally perfect.” “Love was truly in the air! The weather was gorgeous. I’ve been a part of so many weddings, good and bad, and I can actually say ours was amazing! “There were no hiccups, everyone dance, laughed and cried. It was the perfect wedding.” The Lotzgesells were surrounded by about 120 of their closest family and friends, and there was an abundance of happiness enveloping the day. “Our wedding was very special to us,” Allison said. “We got to get married on the family farm that has been in the Lotzgesell name since the 1800s. “With the recent loss of Garrett’s grandma, Margaret Lotzgesell, the family had to sell the farm. We felt extremely honored to be able to celebrate on the last weekend it was owned by a Lotzgesell.
Peninsula Weddings “The farm is very dear to our hearts, as we had many adventures there. “We’ll forever cherish the memories.” One unexpected gift on their special day was handled by Allison’s mother, Barbara Lippert. In high school, Allison said, they had a German exchange student named Annie. Over the last 14 years, Allison and Annie stayed in touch. “I would consider her the sister I never had,” Allison said. “My mom surprised me the Wednesday before our wedding with Annie. It brought me to tears. By far the best surprise guest of our wedding.” For their honeymoon, Allison and Garrett went to Bali, Indonesia, after the wedding. “It was such an amazing experience. We love adventure and history but also the relaxing beach time, and it was the perfect combination,” Allison said. After the honeymoon, Allison and Garrett have been planning the next steps in their lives together. “Next for us would probably be traveling, enjoying new adventures and building a family,” Allison said. “We live in our home together that I built in 2016, and (we) are both doing amazing career-wise. “We’re just very happy being with each other.” Allison (Lippert) Lotzgesell is the daughter of Michael and Barbara Lippert. Garrett Lotzegell is the son of David and Teresa Lotzgesell.

first dance song at the wedding reception often sets the tone for the upcoming festivities and can exemplify just how newlyweds feel about each other. Couples might agonize over which song to choose, but there are many different resources available that can help couples narrow down their options. Spotify, a popular streaming music service, has compiled a list of the most popular wedding songs for 2018, based on global respondents. Their top pick was “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, a song that many might suspect was composed with wedding dances in mind. Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” Etta James’“At Last,” John Legend’s “All of Me” and Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” filled out the remaining top five spots on Spotify’s list.

Alcoholic beverages dehydrate the body and cause it to hold onto water. Be true to yourselves as a couple. Don’t plan a wedding based on others’ expectations of what your day should be like, but instead focus on the aspects that are important to your relationship and celebrate those unique pieces. A second piece of advice: Spreadsheets! Using shared spreadsheet documents made the coordinated planning between me and my husband so organized and efficient. We both were actively involved in the planning, which was a lot of fun to do together. Our wedding was the first time our parents met. My favorite part of the day was watching all of these important people in our lives meet each other and come together to celebrate our marriage, to support us in this new adventure and to explore the beautiful corner of the world that we call home.” Angela Rowe and Iain McConnell of Seattle MEGAN MONTALVO Married at Olympic View Cabins in Port Angeles

Don’t take yourself or the day too seriously. Soak it up (because) it goes so fast. Spend the money on a photographer! You’ll have the pictures forever, and things you never saw happen will pop up in some great pictures. My favorite part was the reception. Watching our families and friends there to support, celebrating and enjoying themselves made me so happy. They were all there to wish us well in our future. I felt overwhelmed with gratitude. Not to mention the beautiful location in Forks! His favorite part was the escape to take pictures. Our fantastic photographer (Stephanie Gray) whisked us away to take pictures at the Rialto Beach. We were able to spend alone time together on our special day.” Kaylee and Kyler McCaslin of Port Angeles STEPHANIE GRAY Married at Fern Acres in Forks

Destination weddings & ceremonies by KIM REYNOLDS Dreaming of a destination wedding? You’re not alone. Once-in-a-lifetime experiences are one of the hottest trends today. Destination events are a unique way to express your love for one another while combining a reunion for family and friends, romantic travel and your big event all in one. Topping the hottest trends are destination weddings. Ranging from the beaches of Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean to well-known gardens and parks, rooftops, Italian villas, Irish castles, French wineries and even chilly glaciers, all are options for a memorable event. All-inclusive resorts offer great value-added experiences, especially if your dream is to get married or hold a symbolic ceremony shoreside on a white sandy beach at sunset. A resort’s on-site wedding team will work closely with you to coordinate your special day and offer packages ranging from simple to full-blown, day-of bundles that include spa luxuries and hair and makeup services. Peninsula Weddings For LGBTQ couples, Celebrity Cruise Lines is the only cruise line legally able to offer same-sex couples weddings at-sea performed by the captain in international waters. Wherever you go, it is important to research the marriage guidelines and legalities for your ceremony at your destination. Some destinations require local marriage licenses, blood work and forms requiring you to arrive a few days before your ceremony. Keep in mind that destination weddings and weddings at sea are subject to inclement weather, itinerary changes and, in some cases, foreign regulatory requirements. Always allow at least 90 days lead time when planning international options. Navigating all the options can be overwhelming and time consuming. Working with a qualified, experienced destination

Types of officiants A
central — and very important — figure on a couple’s wedding day is the officiant. Officiants perform the wedding ceremony and are the first to introduce the newlyweds to their guests as an officially married couple. Various types of officiants can officiate a wedding, and understanding each type can help couples find the right one for them. RELIGIOUS OFFICIANT: Couples who want traditional religious ceremonies often choose a religious officiant, such as a parish priest or rabbi, with whom they’re familiar. Religious officiants might be governed by certain rules that restrict them to performing ceremonies in a house of worship, which might rule them out for couples who want outdoor or destination weddings. CIVIL OFFICIANT: Civil officiants are officers of the court, such as a judge or justice of the peace. Many couples who are planning destination weddings abroad still choose to have a civil officiant perform a wedding ceremony at home. This is because some overseas officiants might not be au-
thorized to marry couples in their home countries, meaning their marriages won’t be recognized once they return home. Civil officiants make sure marriages are legal, and they also make great options for couples who just want to get hitched without a grand ceremony. PROFESSIONAL OFFICIANT: Professional officiants are not affiliated with a particular religious organization. That makes them great choices for couples who aren’t religious, as well as those who come from different religious backgrounds and won’t be converting to the same faith. These officiants typically meet with a couple once or twice to get to know them before writing the speech they will give during the ceremony. LOVED ONES: Many couples ask a friend or family member to officiate their weddings. Couples who want to take this route should research local laws to determine the steps loved ones must take to become ordained ministers who will be recognized by the state or country where the ceremony will take place. — METROCREATIVE
