The Snoqualmie Valley Record’s 2019

SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS

Here in the Valley, residents need their local businesses just as much as the businesses need the residents. Whether it’s groceries, a gift, or a garage door, it’s almost always faster and easier to turn to local businesses. The businesses in the Valley are part of the foundation of the community, not just because they are staffed with locals who worry about the

same issues facing the entire community, but also because they choose to be here. They pay their share of rising property taxes and licensing and permit fees and business taxes, to maintain a full crew on at the fire station, to keep police on patrol, to educate the children throughout the entire community, and to improve and operate the streets and sewers.

In local businesses, the purpose in setting up shop in the Valley is to find ways to support friends and neighbors — but not having to sit through an hour-long commute is an added bonus. In this issue of the annual Spotlight on Business, the lights is shone on some of the ways businesses are working to grow into an increasingly vital part of the Valley.

2019 SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS Dirtfish teaches you how to drive the rally way Driver age ranges from 15 to 80-something. By Drew Stuart dstuart@soundpublishing.com

The Dirtfish Rally School is not your typical driving school. The instructors don’t teach students how to parallel park or make a three-point-turn; instead, trained instructors show them how to drift around corners and get in-sync with their car under the worst driving conditions. Dirtfish was founded in June 2010, when Snoqualmie Mill Ventures purchased the Weyerhaeuser Saw Mill site and the surrounding property, and began transforming the location into a site for rally car racing. In total, the property is about 315 acres. Today, Dirtfish equips its students with practical car knowledge and car control, allowing them to take the lessons they learn on the track with them into the real world.

“We teach advanced techniques to make people safer drivers,” said Trevor Wert, media manager at Dirtfish. Wert has worked at Dirtfish for more than four years, joining up with the company in the middle of 2014. The business model appears to be working. Wert said that their business has been increasing each year, with most days in early 2019 already booked in advance. Dirtfish employs 15

professionally trained instructors to give students practical training under the tutelage of an expert. Dirtfish also has its own shop repair staff who maintain their fleet of Subaru rally vehicles on a daily basis. Dirtfish primarily focuses on teaching the basics of good car control, but they also have a flair for competition. To start competing in rally races, Dirtfish Motorsports was formed as an extension of

the Dirtfish brand. Dirtfish Motorsports sends drivers to races across Washington state, and even competed in the 2017 Red Bull Global Rallycross in Seattle. The company does more than teach students and participate in races. Dirtfish regularly puts on community events free of charge, like Summerfest or the Thrill Ride event during the fall season. During Summerfest, attendees can enjoy racing, a car show and

refreshments for no charge, and the Thrill Ride later in the year provides a Halloween-themed “We have this property, and we want to use it, we want to invite people here,” Wert said. “We just want to show people a good time.” Beyond events, Dirtfish gives back to the community through donations to charity. They have four designated charities they give to, including Seattle Humane, Encompass, Pushing Boundaries and Conservation Northwest. Wert said that each of the local charities mean a lot to the company. “We do a lot of

fundraising,” Wert said. Dirtfish isn’t only for kids looking to test out a cool rally car either. Their attention to giving students a healthy dose of practical experience behind the wheel with different driving programs for any kind of student. “Everyone should experience it, and everyone can do it,” Wert said. “We let people come in at 15 with a permit, and our oldest customer is in her 80s. We can cater to anybody.” Dirtfish is located at 7001 396th Drive SE in Snoqualmie, and can be contacted at (866) 285-1332.

North Bend Automotive is one of many auto repair shops located along Southeast North Bend Way, just a mile away from downtown. The stretch of road is home to several businesses, including a Les Schwab Tires and a NAPA parts shop to boot. However, North Bend Automotive aims to fix your existing car parts, instead of replacing them with new ones, as many modern car shops do. The team at North Bend Automotive is led by Bobby Farris, a seasoned mechanic who took over the shop less than two years ago. He runs the shop with his daughter, Jennifer, and lifelong friend, Ed Hoffman, who he met at a Honda dealership in

Puyallup three decades ago. “The money to me is secondary. Just make sure it’s right,” Farris said. “You don’t need to hit a home run on every single car.” Farris has been repairing things since his childhood in Renton. His first projects started at age 4, where he says he started to fix his toys when they would break. By age 8 he could fix his pedal bike. Farris started working on cars not long after, and soon found a career in the auto repair business. Farris likened his ability to fix cars to an artists ability to visualize a painting. “When they paint a picture, they look at it and see a picture. When I look at something, I can tell what’s inside, can already work on it just by looking at it,” Farris said. North Bend Automotive mechanic Josh Shackelford commented on Farris’s knack for fixing cars, saying he hardly even uses

his upstairs office to do business. “He works out of where he’s standing at that moment,” Shackelford said, chuckling. North Bend Automotive’s small group of mechanics can fix practically all of a cars mechanical issues, from broken head gaskets, to performing routine oil changes. Farris said that most car problems are due to a lack of maintenance, and an event like that allows people to fix their cars before it’s broken. North Bend Automotive also offers a customer appreciation day in addition to its regular repair services. Customers can come by the shop and get their car inspection while enjoying snacks and refreshments provided for free by North Bend Automotive. North Bend Automotive is located at 43306 SE North Bend Way and can be reached at (425) 888-4522.

2019 SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS ProSki, Visit the town of ‘Twin Peaks’ Mountain Service provides rentals, outerwear for the ski season Customers can also schedule guided mountain services. By Drew Stuart dstuart@soundpublishing.com

Skiers and snowboarders can find a variety of boots, bindings and specialized outerwear at the ProSki and Mountain Service shop in downtown North Bend. ProSki and Mountain Service has been in service since the 1990s, led by owner Martin Volken. During the winter, the shop provides equipment for downhill skiing, snowboarding and splitboarding, in addition to their apparel for those in the mountain lifestyle. Store manager Michael Warner said that what sets them apart from the competition is their attention to specialized clothing and outerwear that they keep on hand in the store. “You’re going to find really highend, user-specific pieces,” Warner said. Instead of typical outlet outerwear, customers will find jackets, flannels and other goods from Dynafit, Outdoor Research and Exped in addition to skis, boots and bindings. “We want to find out what we See SERVICE, Page 10

‘I feel like I make some people’s dreams come true,’ creator, guide says. By Drew Stuart dstuart@soundpublishing.com

David Israel created Twin Peaks Tour almost two years ago, but his path to that decision began when he was a 16-year old-living in Seattle. ”Twin Peaks” was a smash television hit back in the 1990s, popularizing the beautiful gloominess of the Pacific Northwest and introducing audiences to variety of eccentric characters and supernatural entities. Yet the show was not to last; the show was canceled after the second season failed to earn the stellar ratings that first season achieved. Despite the cancellation, the show was not lost on die hard fans like Israel. His love for the show sent him on frequent trips to Snoqualmie and North Bend, where much of the filming for “Twin Peaks” took place. “I would come out here every other week with friends, just looking for filming locations.” Israel said. After doing this for four years, Israel had found practically every location used in the show, making him the perfect tour guide for all things “Twin Peaks.” But the Twin Peaks Tour didn’t materialize until two decades later, when Israel entertained a few friends from Germany with an improvised tour of Twin Peaks. The couple was impressed, and told him that he should consider making a

business out of his tour. Israel didn’t think much of the suggestion until he did a bit of research on the matter himself. “There was only one tour company that was offering a tour,” Israel said. It cost tourists $350, and only showed them a handful of locations from the show. The rest is history. The tour was immediately popular, allowing Israel to leave his bar manager job at The Neptune Theater. During his busy season in the summertime, Israel does two-aday tours, every day. This past summer, Israel said there were only two days where he didn’t give any tours. “I don’t even consider it work

to be honest, I just love to do it,” Israel said. Israel dons an FBI costume, and adopts a character reminiscent of “Twin Peaks” protagonist Dale Cooper for his job. He takes fans to the iconic shooting locations like Snoqualmie Falls and Tweed’s Cafe, all underscored by the moody Twin Peaks soundtrack. He even peppers in “Twin Peaks” trivia for the discerning fan. Israel offers three different tours as apart of his business model. The first tour shows tourists locations from the first two seasons of “Twin Peaks.” The second focuses on locations used in the recent third season of the show. Israel also offers a

combined tour, with locations from both tours mixed together. The first two options cost $95 per person, lasting 3-4 hours. The combined tour costs $185 dollars and lasts 5-6 hours. “I am so honored that I get to do this for a living,” Israel said with an enthusiastic, boyish smile. He’s had fans from Australia and the U.K. come to him for the tour. Even newlyweds have come to him for a tour as apart of their honeymoon. “I feel like I make some people’s dreams come true,” Israel said. David Israel can be reached at (206) 723-5201 or by email at twinpeakstour@gmail.com for tour scheduling.
