WE CAN DO MORE TOGETHER Each day, Rainier Foothills Wellness Foundation helps someone in our community. Every day, we bring both help and hope to seniors, youth, veterans and disabled throughout the Plateau by providing hot meals, backpacks with food for children and transportation to health-related appointments. With your help, we are able to provide a safety net for our most vulnerable citizens and mobilize our community to address hunger, access to healthcare, mental health and student academic success.
If you would like to volunteer or make a donation, please visit our website or call our office. Serving: Enumclaw, Buckley, Black Diamond and the smaller communities of NE Pierce and SE King counties

Bonney Lake Medical Center 21509 SR 410 E, Ste. 1, Bonney Lake 253-891-2160 medical_assistant13@yahoo.com I have been a doctor for twenty-five years. My philosophy toward medicine is basically to help people every day. I want to take that bookish knowledge given to me in medical school, translate it into a working diagnosis for my patients, then effectively communicate the treatment and educate the patient so they can execute a good health plan. I think my social skills help a lot in this regard. No matter how much knowledge you have, unless you can pass on that knowledge of the disease and treatment to the patient, it is wasted. I love this area and the people here. I live in Bonney Lake and take a lot of pride and ownership in taking care of patients in my community! Thank you for this opportunity!

What you may not know about Alzheimer’s Disease Special to The Courier-Herald
Dr. Mythili Ramachandran
New patients welcome!
Rainier View Apartments
Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is often mistaken as something that only affects aging men and women. While the Alzheimer’s Association® notes that age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, the group also warns that even men and women nowhere close to retirement age can develop the disease. In fact, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that, in the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, many people with early-onset are in their 40s and 50s. Recognizing that Alzheimer’s is not just for retirees but capable of affecting younger men and women with families and careers is important, as the Alzheimer’s Association points out that healthcare providers typically do not look for signs or symptoms of Alzheimer’s in young people. In such people, symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be incorrectly attributed to stress. Adults who suspect they might be suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s should have a comprehensive medical evaluation, which may include a neurological exam and/or brain imaging, conducted by a physician who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease.

Warning Signs of a Heart Attack Special to The Courier-Herald
An umbrella term that encompasses various conditions, cardiovascular disease, or CVD, is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of 17.7 million people across the globe every year, accounting for 31 percent of all deaths worldwide. If CVD statistics are alarming, then it’s important to note that many premature deaths related to CVD can be prevented. While the WHO notes that four out of five CVD deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes, men and women who learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack may be able to get help before things escalate. In fact, the American Heart Association notes that many heart attacks begin slowly with mild pain or discomfort. By paying attention to their bodies and learning to recognize these warning signs, men and women may be able to get help before heart attacks claim their lives. • Chest discomfort: Discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back is a telltale sign of heart attack. The discomfort may feel like pressure in the chest, squeezing, fullness, or pain. • Discomfort in the upper body: Discomfort in areas of the upper body that are not the chest also may be a warning sign of heart attack. The AHA notes that such discomfort or pain may occur in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
• Shortness of breath: Shortness of breath may be an early warning sign of heart problems. The AHA notes that this may or may not be accompanied by discomfort in the chest. • Additional signs: The AHA notes that some people suffering from a heart attack may break out in a cold sweat, experience nausea or begin to feel lightheaded. Are symptoms different for men and women? Symptoms of heart attack tend to be different for men and women. While the most common symptom for both men and women is chest pain or discomfort, women are more likely than men to experience additional symptoms. According to the AHA, women are more likely than men to experience shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and pain in their backs or jaws. The AHA urges fast action by anyone who suspects they or a loved one are suffering a heart attack. Acting quickly can save lives and help men and women avoid joining the nearly 18 million people who succumb to cardiovascular disease each year.

Being overweight is a risk factor for diabetes, but the American Diabetes Association notes that many people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are at a normal weight or only moderately overweight. Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a nutritious diet are two great ways to reduce your risk for diabetes, but even people who make such choices can still develop type 2 diabetes. For example, smokers may eat right and exercise, but their decision to light up can increase their risk for type 2 diabetes. That’s because smoking raises levels of bad cholesterol in the blood and increases blood pressure. Each of those things increases a person’s risk of developing diabetes. Genetics also plays a role in a person’s risk of developing diabetes, regardless
of the size of his or her waistline. According to the ADA, people whose mother, father, sister, or brother have or have had heart disease or diabetes are at a greater risk of developing diabetes than people with no such family history.
