Auburn 2019 Residents’ Guide

A Message from the Mayor Last year, Auburn marked a major milestone when its population surpassed the 80,000 mark. This number gives our city a new distinction by regional standards as a “large metropolitan area” — a title that comes as no surprise to many as we have watched the historic growth and development here throughout the decade. We have seen nearly 1,000 new residences come online in the past 12 months, with new developments opening in all corners of the city. We’ve welcomed expanded housing options for seniors and watched our downtown continue to evolve and flourish as more residents move into our city core and

new businesses take root here. Despite this growth, however, our city continues to hold onto the hometown feel and sense of community that has always defined Auburn. As I travel throughout our region and work with other municipalities throughout the United States, I am often reminded how blessed we are to hold onto this connection. Auburn is a special place, made extraordinary by the many traditions, backgrounds and cultures that we are made up of. As we grow, we will continue to find opportunities to bring people together and learn from each other, and I will continue to fight as your mayor for the

best for you and our city. I hope that you enjoy this year’s residents’ guide and that you take advantage of the great opportunities and offerings right here in Auburn. It takes all of us supporting our community and local businesses for our city to continue to grow and thrive. Thank you again for the great honor of serving as your mayor and have a wonderful 2019! Welcome to the Auburn School District Welcome to the Auburn School District! I would like to highlight some successes, and let you know what is on the horizon. We are serving a record number of students this year--almost 17,000 students in our 22 schools. Auburn is a great place in which to live and raise a family, and our enrollment shows it! To help meet the demand of increased enrollment, the Auburn community passed a $456 million bond in 2016, and we are on the path to replace six of our aging schools and build two new elementary schools. A new Olympic Middle School opens this fall. Construction of the new

Dick Scobee Elementary and elementary #15 begins this summer. The support and strong commitment of our community will contribute to our success for generations. We are in the second year of a new 5-year strategic plan to guide the work in achieving our primary goal of 100 percent graduation for all Auburn students. We have a system-wide commitment to this goal that begins in the early grades and continues through a variety of opportunities and supports at the secondary level. We have achieved our goal of targeted 1:1 technology for all students,

thanks to the technology levy passed in 2014. Students are learning how to learn with technology. It is transforming personalized learning for all students. In Auburn, we want each student to be successful, so we are looking at everything we do with a lens of equity. A large contingent of teachers, principals, support staff and administrators participates in a variety of trainings to obtain tools to close the achievement gaps for students of every race and family-income level. We will continue building relationships to engage, educate and empower all students.

PROUD TRADITION: VETERANS DAY PARADE Honoring veterans is a tradition in the City of Auburn. And for the past 53 years, the Veterans Day Parade has acknowledged the sacrifices made by American veterans, past and present, with one of the largest processions west of the Mississippi. The mile-long parade typically lasts about two hours, featuring marching bands, ROTC units, re-enactors, active military units and military vehicles from all eras. Last year's parade presented more than 200 entries and nearly 6,000 parade participants, showcasing American strength of will, endurance and purpose.

The parade included more than 25 high school marching bands, military vehicles, veterans' units, honor guards and more. Auburn is designated by the Veterans Day National Committee and

the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a regional site for the celebration of Veterans Day. The 54th edition of the tradition is Nov. 9 on Main Street.
