As you flip through the following pages, we hope you will help us celebrate the city’s preCARRIE RODRIGUEZ mier people, places and businesses as we present EDITOR’S NOTE the results of our 21st annual Best of Federal Way contest. You — our readers — chose the following winners through online and print ballots over the past few months. The Mirror officially revealed the winners at our Best of Federal Way event on March 6 at a packed Federal Way Community Center. Thousands of votes were cast in over 60 categories ranging from the best breakfast and burger businesses, to the best city leaders, police officers, firefighters, volunteers, educators and service providers. In addition to the list of winners, we have highlighted some of these exceptional people in this special

top-notch servers at Salty’s who care about warm service that keeps their patrons coming back. Speaking of compassion, we are also proud to announce the Mirror’s 2019 Citizen of the Year — Donna Clark. For the past seven-plus years, Clark has been delivering flowers to about 20 residents at Avalon Care Center in Federal Way to brighten their rooms and their days. “Most people find nursing homes to be very dreary,” said her husband, Al. “Donna does her part in bringing smiles to everyone.” Clark was among the 2018 honorees for Citizen of the Month; we tip our hats to each of them for caring about this city. We also hope you will join us in saluting all of this year’s winners — the entrepreneurs, organizations and people who help make the Federal Way community an exceptional place.

Dr. Shoop spreads smiles around the globe Daniel Shoop wins Best Dentist in Federal Way’s Best Of 2019.

BY OLIVIA SULLIVAN osullivan@fedwaymirror.com

If there’s one thing Dr. Daniel Shoop does better than caring for cavities, it’s caring for his patients. Dr. Shoop and his Federal Way-based dentistry Dr. Shoop won Best Dentist in the Mirror’s Best of Federal Way 2019 awards. Shoop Dentistry, which bought out longtime Dr. Jacka, has been at the Federal Way space since April 2018. Hailing from Poulsbo, Shoop now resides in Tacoma after earning his education — and meeting his wife — at the University of Michigan. The couple welcomed a baby girl last year. Shoop has been in practice for nearly five years, and still gets fired up about making his patients smile. “I’ve always wanted to be a dentist,” Shoop explained adding there’s not a real underlying reason why — he just enjoys helping people. “It was always there, it’s just always called me. I never had an out of body experience, I never climbed a mountain and saw a cloud formed in the shape of a tooth … I’m happy, I love what I do.” To him, dentistry is an art form that also allows you to help people. “It changes their lives,” he said. “Your teeth are more than just eating; it’s also your self-esteem.” While many people from Federal Way have sat in his dentistry chair, he enjoys working with kids or “really, really nervous people.” “That’s an opportunity to make a change not just in someone’s day but in their life,” he said. “As you see them again and again, you see their walls come down and that’s kind of cool.” Some of the best moments he’s experienced at work have been when completing immediate full dentures on people who have wanted to fix their smile for years, he said. Many times, patients break down crying out of happiness due to their fixed teeth. “I’m really bad with names and faces but I’m good with teeth so when I see your teeth, I remember you,” he

said, only half-jokingly. Above all, Shoop’s utmost care leads him to service all people — not just his patients. Twice he’s taken his talents across the globe on humanitarian trips to bring dentistry services to countries that need it the most. Shoop traveled to Guatemala in 2013 and recently returned from the Dominican Republic this past January. While it’s incredibly helpful to the community served, it doubles as a learning experience for each volunteer, he said. “It was incredible,” he said. “It’s a different experience, it makes you really grateful when you come back. As tired as you are, you’re charged and ready to go.” Shoop said he also knows there’s a need for volunteerism right here in Washington. Intermittently for the past four years, Shoop has also volunteered in Tacoma with the Medical Teams International with the Mobile Dental Program Dental Bus. “I like to volunteer any time I can.” The dental vans visit places where people need urgent help, according to their website. Along with providing dental care and prevention of future tooth decay, volunteers also teach good dental hygiene. This program partners with community agencies to identify areas with the greatest need, according to Medical Teams International website, which often serves those living in poverty, people with disabilities, the elderly, people experiencing homelessness, migrant workers, Native American populations, recovering addicts, veterans and youth, among others. Recent technology upgrades have also improved Shoop’s dentistry atmosphere and function. The office recently installed TV screens at each station and are hooked up to cameras so patients can watch along with procedures, see before and after photos, and more, Shoop said. “What I’m really excited about right now is 3D printing,” he said. Using resin and 3D printing machines, Shoop is able to create mouthguards, night guards and tooth implants, tailored to the precise needs of each patient. Opposed to the previous way of procedures using models as guidelines or by freehanding, this new technology makes for a perfect restoration of the tooth and a quicker, safer procedure for patients, he added. In his free time, Shoop can be found perusing dental boards for the latest technology or information, searching to educate himself to better serve Federal Way and the surrounding communities.

...BEST OF

Although Shoop won the title as Federal Way’s Best Dentist, he believes it’s his office team who earned the award. “I’ve been here for nine months,” he said. “I’m humbled and very appreciative.” Shoop’s message to the Federal Way community? “I am very grateful to be part of such an incredible team and thankful for the acknowledgment of our dedication to serving the community.” Dr. Shoop Dentistry is conveniently located in Capitol Square Professinal Plaza at 700 S. 320th St., Suite E, in Federal Way. The business also offers a 5 percent senior discount. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 253-946-3575, or visit www.shoopdentistry.com. Federal Way’s best at Salty’s at Redondo Tawna Gogolin and Erin Keeley both love the work they do.

BY HALEY DONWERTH hdonwerth@fedwaymirror.com

Best Bartender On a sunny day sitting at the bar at Salty’s at Redondo, you can see across the water to the mountains. The view is beautiful, but the cocktails might be better. Tawna Gogolin started working as a bartender in Hawaii in 1988, but she’s been with Salty’s now for 22 years. She started as a server in the restaurant business, and moved into bartending after seeing how much fun it looked. “It just looked fun,” she said. “I liked the fast-paced work.” Gogolin works as the bar manager at Salty’s, so she creates the menu and chooses the wine list. Salty’s cocktail list is a little different than what you might find at other restaurants or bars. They like to make up their own drinks, Gogolin said, one of the most popular being a Huckleberry Lemon Drop. That was one of the specialty drinks they had for Valentine’s Day, another being a Rose Martini. One of Gogolin’s favorite things about Salty’s is her regulars. “They’re a great group, we’re friends outside of work,” she said. Gogolin is excited about being nominated for Best Bartender, but said it’s hard to vote

for anyone from Salty’s because she works with such a great group of people. “I’m proud to work here.” Despite technically being located in Des Moines, that doesn’t stop it from being nominated for Best of Federal Way each year. This year, Salty’s received six total nominations for best bartender, best server, best seafood, best lunch place, best buffet place and best brunch place. Best Waiter Erin Keeley keeps the Salty’s nominations going with her best waiter nomination for 2019. Keeley has been a server at Salty’s for six of the last 12 years she’s worked in the food business. She said she’s part of the low percentage of people who genuinely enjoy what they do for a living. Her first serving job was at a sandwich shop in Sumner, but she really fell in love with the work after she started at The Rock in Federal Way. “Running around, making cocktails, and slingin’ pizzas and beers was an absolute blast,” she said. She wound up at Salty’s after wanting to take a step into more fine dining, and it’s been her home ever since. “I love the views, the guests, and the team

Tawna Gogolin working behind the bar at Salty’s at Redondo, bringing happiness in the form of delicious cocktails to her regulars. Haley Donwerth/staff photo

I get to work with on a regular basis.” Keeley said. “I think our motto says it all. ‘A Happy Guest is our Success.’” Keeley is ecstatic at her 2019 nomination. “It just means that I’m truly making a difference in others’ days and that’s what I strive for.” At Salty’s, Keeley does a little bit of

everything. She bartends, serves and manages throughout the week. She says she enjoys her all-over schedule because it keeps things fresh and helps her continue to learn and grow. “Knowledge is key to growing, and I feel that there’s always room for growth.”

Every week Donna Clark delivers flowers to about 20 residents at Avalon Care Center in Federal Way to brighten their rooms and their days. She’s been doing so for the past seven years. Her dedication to spreading joy among the residents has earned her the honor of the Mirror’s 2019 Citizen of the Year. “An avid gardener, Donna brings flowers from her garden and chats with each resident as she is arranging a bouquet

in their vase,” her husband Al said in an email about his wife. “Everyone knows her as the ‘Flower Lady.’ Residents and staff know her friendly smile. “When her garden has no flowers in the wintertime, she buys about $30 worth of cut flowers from one of the grocery stores. At 78 years old, older than many of the residents, she loves what she does. And everyone who hears of her work is amazed with her dedication. Most people find nursing homes to be very dreary. Donna does her part in bringing smiles to everyone.” [more FLOWERS on page 9]

ing homes and helping her own mother through health struggles inspired her to become an activities director at a nursing home and later at Heritage House at the Market near Pike Place Market in Seattle, which was the first assisted living facility in the state. When Clark and her husband moved to Northeast Tacoma from the SeaTac area, she started visiting residents at Avalon, 135 S. 336th St. One of the residents she visited often talked about how much she loved flowers, so Clark started bringing some from her own garden to the woman. Soon her flower deliveries grew – just like her garden, which is comprised primarily of dahlias. “It is just my passion,” Clark said of visiting the residents and delivering

Although she primarily delivers flowers to women, there are a few men who receive the blooms. “Sometimes the men want them to give to staff,” she said. Clark said it is rewarding to give back to the community and encourages others to do the same. “Just the joy of seeing people when you walk in the door,” she said. “[They say,] ‘Oh, I am so glad to see you, so glad you came.” The staff at the care center also enjoys Clark’s deliveries. “They love that,” she said. “They love the flowers. Often they will ask what are the flowers, because they don’t know or they will ask where I got them.” Clark said she plans to continue delivering flowers as long as she is able.

Sometimes when you have given up a lot of other things like your home and you don’t really have a lot of say of what goes on in your life, it just comforts the person that receives the flowers.” Delivering the flowers gives Clark a chance to visit with the residents. “Most of the people I have been giving flowers to have vases,” she said. “I don’t do the arrangements here at my house. I take the flowers there in buckets. If the people are able to, I let them choose (the flowers). … They will often talk about what kind flowers they grew and which kind they like the best. Or they tell you stories about what their husband did to their flowers, if they ran over them or something.”

CLOSER LOOK: Best local nonprofit Multi-Service Center provides hope to people experiencing homelessness.

Help, hope and dignity. These are the pathways that Multi-Service Center is creating to build a future without povery throughout South King County. This unique mission is part of why the local nonprofit is the first-place finalist for Best Local Charity/Non-profit in the Mirror’s Best of 2019. Multi-Service Center lifts people from crisis and vulnerability to self-sufficiency and stability. The organization addresses the “causes and barriers of poverty and homelessness with comprehensive and holistic services,” according to their website.

What does this look like? Betty, 62, was a figure skater when she performed a double axle at 15 years old and fell, which changed her professional path. She went on to become a nurse, and 12 years ago some medical issues “prompted the start of her housing instability,” according to MSC’s website. Betty had also previously found herself in an unsafe housing situation, so she stored her belongings in a church and became homeless. “Through MSC and the Path to Home Program, Betty was able to stay in a hotel
