Spring / Summer 2017
About Island Child
Every year in spring, The Beachcomber publishes this guide, a directory of summer camps and classes, as well as child care programs and preschools. We hope it helps island families plan for the long days of summer ahead. We are big believers in the value of lying in the green grass and watching the clouds float by. But we are also big believers in summer adventures — whether they involve creating with clay, taking to the stage in a musical or perfecting moves on the soccer field. Vashon offers opportunities for all those activities and a multitude of others. All too soon summer will pass, and many families are already looking ahead to fall and opportunities for their youngest children. We hope the information here will help people chart their course as summer approaches — and fall follows swiftly on its heels. — Susan Riemer, editor

Openings: Yes (drop-in available if space) Ages: 18 months to 6 years (will take older chil-

Program: Children should be allowed to grow at
their own pace and to learn in ways that help them become confident in themselves as learners. Little Islanders’ goal is to provide all of the children with a clean, safe, comfortable and nurturing environment. Respect toward self, others and the environment will be emphasized. The school believes in play-based learning. Some activities are a little more structured, such as regular reading times, circle times, arts and crafts and musical activities. These activities also tend to be flexible so that children may embrace what they are interested in and where their imagination takes them. The school’s students spend a lot of time outside even when it’s raining, running, jumping and playing in puddles. The school owner, Lisa Moe, says her goal is to create an environment and program where the child’s natural desire to learn is stimulated through meaningful, appropriate and playful learning experiences, ones that meet the needs of each child as an individual. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday year round. The school offers drop-in opportunities when space is available for all ages and year round.

teachers, spacious, well-equipped classroom and play yard (play yard is lead and arsenic free), and forest trails. This will be Little Tree’s 21st year, but Montessori education was established well over 100 years ago. The school’s environment is intentional, peaceful and active; it is wonderfully tailored to the social and learning needs unique to this age. The school begins and ends each day outside with lots of play time. Inside, the classroom is arranged for children to be able to do many things without the immediate help of an adult. During this time of formative development, children are especially drawn to activities that involve independence, as well as using their hands, learning language, movement, sensory perception, understanding the order of people, places and things, social skills and personal relationships. Children are drawn to these areas because they are in a time-sensitive period for learning about them, which creates a driving force for their actions and behavior. Children thrive when we feed their curiosity about the real world, respect and protect their interests, preferences, concentration and, most importantly, their childhood.

Preschool has been part of the Vashon community since 1970. The co-op offers high-quality, playbased education for toddlers up to kindergarten. The classroom is a dynamic, hands-on laboratory where kids are invited to discover and explore. Children are encouraged to learn at their own pace and interest level. Social-emotional growth is a key element of this age-appropriate curriculum. Families benefit from the co-op’s approach of educating both child and parent. Parents participate in the classroom once a week as assistant teachers, where they get to see their kids in action and learn as the teachers model positive communication and problem solving with the children. Monthly parent education classes with expert parent instructors offer insight into age-specific developmental stages and help parents navigate these wonderful and challenging early years. JournaLibertation! Creative Journaling Journaling is a way for us to connect to our deepest feelings, thoughts, and experiences, without the distraction of screens or the pressure of social media. At JournaLibertation, we explore freewriting, poetry, mindfulnessbased personal essays, collage, free-sketch, collaborative journaling, and much more! Letting go of self-judgement and perfectionism, we say yes to anything and everything we create. As long as we are filling pages, there’s no wrong way to journal! Instructor Camille Reeves is a life-long diarist, musician and artist, and teaches music privately to people of all ages .
