Network, interview, learn, get hired at this year’s Career Fair

“W

here the best businesses find the best employees” is more than a tagline — it’s a success story with each Snohomish County Career Fair. Whether you’re fresh out of school or looking for a career change, this is the place to be on Tuesday, April 23. “Even if you’re not currently on the hunt for a new job, this is a great opportunity to network and learn more about employers you may be interested in working with in the future,” said Randie Pospical, HeraldMedia’s recruitment specialist. Take some of the burden off your job search by meeting more than 55 recruiters all in one place. Just dress for success with your resume, cover letter and references in hand. Job seekers have been interviewed or even hired on the spot. “We often hear from employers that they’re confident several hires will be made from the event,” Pospical said. Returning companies like Express Employment Professionals, Sno-Isle Libraries, Snohomish County 911, CarMax, and Gensco will host booths during this eighth installment of the career fair. Some of the new faces will be Whitley Evergreen, Beautiful Autism, Legend Brands, St. John Knits, and Benefit Solutions Plus. (For the full list of participating companies, see sidebar to the right.) “With the wide variety of employers and job openings, many job seekers find just what they are looking for,” Pospical said.

How to build better relationships to advance your career

L

ooking to get ahead in your career? Whether your goal is to raise your own level of performance, enhance customer engagement or become a more effective leader, it all starts with bringing out the best in your co-workers, and in yourself, too. One of the primary keys to success is learning to identify the fundamental characteristics of your co-workers, and developing strategies to work with each type of boss, co-worker or client

you come across. • “Pioneers” who value possibilities and spark energy and imagination. They’re creative thinkers who believe big risks can bring great things. • “Drivers” who value challenge and generate momentum. They’re direct in their approach to people and problems. • “Guardians” who value stability and bring rigor and order. They’re deliberate decision makers apt to stick with status quo.

Become a team member!

PNWCareers.com

• “Integrators” who value connection and draw teams together. They’re attuned to nuance, seeing shades of grey rather than black and white. Here are several ways to apply that knowledge and become more effective at your job: • Recognize the key differences in how people work, so you can build empathy and stronger relationships with them — and flex your own style accordingly.

• Learn which kinds of working conditions and interactions can motivate your team, and which kinds may kill their potential. Then you can manage situations to help your team thrive. • Tap into the diversity of your coworkers by determining whose needs are being met and whose aren’t, and then revamp your team’s normal processes so that everyone can perform at his or her best. Transitioning back to work after baby

J

ust when you were getting the hang of having a baby at home, it’s time to go back to work. Beyond the expected changes such as picking work tasks back up and catching up on things you’ve missed, your priorities have most likely shifted now that you’re a parent. It’s normal for parents to feel anxious about transitioning back to work after having a baby, but they don’t have to do it alone. Most new parents have built-in support systems of friends and family, but if their child will be attending daycare, that structure can provide additional help through the transition. To help make the transition back to work as seamless as possible, consider these tips from infant teachers at

KinderCare, which has been caring for children for almost 50 years. 1. Choose a daycare near work. A parent’s first instinct might be to choose a daycare that’s close to home, but once you return to work you may appreciate having your baby nearby – whether to breastfeed or just get some mid-day snuggles. 2. Feel comfortable with your child care provider. Parents know their babies best. Most daycare centers are willing to work with parents to answer questions and create a positive experience for both parents and children. Visit your daycare of choice at least once before and once after your baby is born.

PNWCareers.com Above all else, parents should feel completely at ease when their baby is at daycare. If parents feel comfortable and safe and know that their baby is in the right hands, it can make going back to work easier. 3. Take care of yourself. When parents are on leave, sleepless nights are one thing. However, once parents have to get up at a certain time for work again and get their baby ready for daycare, they can find they’re operating on a whole new level of sleep deprivation. Going back to work after having a baby is a huge step to take, but it’s not impossible. For more tips to make the transition easier, visit KinderCare.com. (Family Features)

What everyone with disabilities should ask

ith historically low unemployment rates among the general population, those with disabilities may enjoy expanded opportunities, particularly as more employers discover the power of a diverse workforce. But finding the right job fit is important, say experts. “When those of us with disabilities have a real seat at the table, the innovations we introduce are beneficial to everyone,” says Kathy Martinez, head of Disability & Accessibility Strategy at Wells Fargo. Are you a job-seeking veteran? What to know

W

ith the veteran unemployment rate at a record low, many who have served in the military are now in the driver’s seat when it comes to civilian job hunting. This is in part because employers understand that veterans bring a wealth of translatable skills and experience to the workforce, including leadership, teamwork and attention to detail. Are you a job-seeking veteran? Before accepting an offer, find out whether your potential employer

values veterans’ contributions to the workplace. To help get the conversation started, the following topics of discussion are suggested: • Growth opportunities. Is this position one on track for promotions and raises? Does this company offer resources and support to employees looking to grow? Discover what your future at this company could look like. • Development programs. Ask about opportunities that will offer

PNWCareers.com

a chance to make new contacts, find a mentor, develop professional skills and learn how to translate existing skills to a new position. • Employee resource groups (ERGs). ERGs can provide resources, opportunities and camaraderie to employees. Find out if the company has a similar group for veterans. • Diversity. Is this a company that values diversity, particularly when it comes to veteran status and disabilities? Will the employer

accept your veteran status and value it as an asset? • Benefits. Beyond military leave, are benefits available that provide supplemental pay and continued healthcare when individuals are called to active duty? Research whether the company offers additional fringe benefits to ease the burden of being away on active duty. For example, some employers provide lawn mowing and snow removal to those away from home on military orders. (StatePoint)

3 questions to ask before accepting that job offer

M

any people view their job search as an opportunity to prove their worth to potential employers. Yet, it is important to keep in mind that finding the perfect match goes both ways. For greater job satisfaction, be sure to evaluate the full offer, including salary and bonus structure, paid time off, relocation assistance and health care benefits. Plus, don’t forget to get the following questions answered before accepting any job offer.

1. Does this company offer opportunities for professional growth? Some positions are designated as a path for growth, and others are not. Find out if yours has a clear pathway for promotion or if it is a dead-end. You may also wish to inquire about the availability of development opportunities, like webinars and off-site training sessions. 2. How will this employer support my long-term financial success? Your financial wellness is determined by more than just your salary. Benefits matter a great deal, too, and these days, they may go far beyond the

3. What is in it for my family? Does your potential employer offer any services or benefits that can improve the lives of your family members? For example, do health benefits include round-the-clock access to telemedicine? Are there health advocacy services offered to help employees and their families reduce stress over navigating the heath care environment? These are services you could suggest to your current employer as an option to help keep talent happy, productive and at the company. (StatePoint)

3 reasons women should consider a career in small business

T

alented, dedicated and ambitious women’s entrepreneurial spirits increasingly are driving the nation forward. Women have steadily increased their presence in the world of small-business ownership over the past 10 years. In fact, the number of women-owned firms has grown 68 percent since 2007, compared with 47 percent for all businesses, and women-owned businesses support more than 7.9 million jobs, according to a survey commissioned by American Express.

Women have many reasons to love working for a small business, according to Aflac’s 2018 Small Business Happiness Survey, which surveyed 1,000 U.S. employees at organizations with three to 49 employees. Eighty-seven percent of all employees said it is more fun working at a small business, and that number was even higher among women. Here are three key findings from Aflac’s survey that indicate women are finding happy, fulfilling careers at small businesses.

1. A supportive, close-knit working environment. One of the clear benefits small businesses have over their counterparts is the ability to more easily create company cultures that make all employees feel like they belong. In fact, in this year’s survey, women employees ranked feeling like a family as the best part of working for a small business. 2. The benefits of greater flexibility. While working for a small business often comes with many perks, women listed flexible scheduling as the biggest perceived benefit (29 percent). This was closely followed by feeling more appreciated and feeling like their input matters. These benefits help explain how a whopping 91 percent of all employees feel satisfied working at a small business. However, 31 percent of female employees said the top challenge of working for a small business over a large one is salary and benefits. Adding voluntary benefits like dental, vision, accident and critical illness insurance is a proven way to not only help employees manage out-of-pocket medical costs, but also improve employee benefits satisfaction and job retention. 3. P rogress and commitment toward pay equality. Seventy-eight percent of female small-business employees believe they are compensated equally with their coworkers, and 73 percent think the smallbusiness industry achieves success when it comes to equal pay. Still, 48 percent of male and female respondents acknowledge that there remains room for improvement. All together, these strides indicate the small-business community is on the right path forward.
