ommunicating is a priority for me — I like to pass along new information and similarly enjoy receiving it. Community is built when we feel in the loop and see information sharing happening. We’re all more engaged and invested in the outcome.

The City of Mercer Island has made communication and engagement a strategic priority. Our intent is to increase awareness of City policies and programs and encourage constituent engagement in the governing process. The response from residents during the 2018 Community Survey emphasized wide interest in not only being informed but also for more public engagement in local decisions. The City Council has directed staff to continue to prioritize this important work.

We emphasize social-emotional learning that is responsive to educating the whole child. The District is consistently ranked among the best in the state and maintains a graduation rate of nearly 95 percent. Our graduates move on to the finest colleges and universities in the world. CITY COUNCIL

www.mercergov. org/council The Mercer Island City Council is made up of Island residents, elected to office by the public. The council works with other local government bodies on regional issues such as transportation and the environment. Seven nonpartisan City Council members are elected to fouryear terms. Elections take place every two years. Council members select a mayor from among themselves to serve a two-year term. There is no term limit for Council members.

The council holds an annual planning session in January and authorizes its biennial budget in the autumn of even-ending years. Council members receive a monthly $200 stipend, while the mayor earns $400. Council meetings usually take place on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The meetings are televised on Comcast channel 21 and YouTube.

The library has three public meeting rooms, a large children section, several computers and a teen section. There are programs for children and adults, including story times, study zone hours and more.

ARTISTS IN ACTION ON MERCER ISLAND BY KATIE METZGER kmetzger@mi-reporter.com

Visitors at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center this winter had a chance to see artists “in action” as they created landscapes with pastels, abstract art with acrylics and tigers with oil paint during a pop-up demonstration. The artists, part of Northwest Artists in Action, create and display their work in public. “So many people have misconceptions about how art is done,” said Terri Davis, the director of Northwest Artists in Action. “We like to bring art out to the people, so they can ask questions.” Her group sees art demonstrations as a teaching opportunity — to educate people about the intricacies of the artistic process and show them that they too can draw, paint and create, if they want. Many of the artists have been painting for more than 30 or 40 years. Some said working in front of people made them self-conscious at first, but that faded with time and as their confidence grew. “Some artists like solitude, but we’re comfortable with this,” Davis said. “That’s kind of a necessity for joining the group.”

www.mi-reporter.com

Many of the artists in the group picked up painting as a hobby later in life, but all have years of experience now. They all support and help each other, Davis said, though they have different mediums. “We all have different styles,” said group co-founder Vasana Monti. “None of our work looks the same.” Davis is a realist painter. During the pop-up on the Island, Ann Davenport was demonstrating her use of pastels, Sandi McGuire was doing watercolor painting and Judy Moritz was using colored pencils, though they all dabble in other mediums. Monti and Masako Thrower have even done sculpture. “It’s very rewarding to let people see what I do,” Thrower said. “My favorite part is encouraging young people.” The 2019 show was Northwest Artists in Action’s first on Mercer Island. The pop-up events are hosted by the Mercer Island Arts Council, which hopes to do similar events in the future. “We want to provide more opportunities for people to engage with the art, beyond just looking at it,”

said Sarah Bluvas, the city’s arts and culture coordinator.

More information on the Mercer Island Gallery can be found at www.mercergov.org/mercerislandgallery.
