SEQUIM IRRIGATION FESTIVAL 2019
Wednesday, April 24, 2019 • 3
Welcome!
The 124th Sequim Irrigation Festival theme is “There’s No Place Like Home”. As Washington’s longest continuous festival, we are continually working on ways to keep this local celebration exciting. “Crazy Callen” Weekend’s Family Fun Day, which started in 2014, has proven to be very successful and continues to grow in 2019. This first weekend of the festival starts with the Crazy Daze Breakfast Friday morning and continues with the First Friday Art Walk, which now provides a patron preview at the innovative Arts and Crafts Fair. The Family Fun Day, Kids Parade, OPAA Members’ Art Show Sale and Driftwood Show round out the weekend. The following weekend, the Logging Show continues on Saturday along with the Fun Run, Hot Rods & Harleys Car Cruz and Show ‘n Shine, Carnival and the best parade on the peninsula: The Grand Parade. As citizens of this amazing city, we invite you to experience the wonderful opportunities of our small town and celebrate with us during the first two weeks of May. An event of this magnitude is made possible because of the endless hard work of the festival board of directors, its committee members, and the countless volunteer hours by individuals and local service clubs, the businesses that recognize the value of community service, and continuous support of our sponsors. This recipe of team work truly makes this a “hometown” community event. Don’t forget to pick up a memento of your time enjoying the festival. We have pins, buttons, note cards, T-shirts and sweatshirts to help you remember your time in Sequim. Festival merchandise is available at many of our events, the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce and Grocery Outlet. Let the festivities begin!
Welcome from the Mayor
Welcome to the Sequim Irrigation Festival, the longest continuous running festival in the state of Washington! This year’s theme, “There’s No Place Like Home” reminds us of just how lucky we are to live in this small corner of paradise. The festival celebrates the opening of the irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River into this arid valley turning it into fertile farmland and our own “Emerald City”. The festival shines a bright light on Sequim and is a treasured event in our community drawing local residents and visitors to take part in the celebration. Sequim has changed a lot since the festival began in 1896, but it is still the pioneering spirit of the festival committee that makes this event happen year after year. On behalf of the City Council, I would like to thank the tireless community volunteers and local sponsors that keep this event going. We appreciate all of their hard work and the energy it takes to make it happen. Festival organizers have planned a full week of exciting activities for the entire family. I hope you are able to take part in all of the fun and enjoy being a part of the Sequim community. Dennis Smith Mayor City of Sequim

Grand Pioneer Bruce Fernie’s earliest recollection of attending the Irrigation Festival was when it was held in the back of the school in the trees. (Now the baseball fields.) Back then, the substance of the festival was about cows and other animals. People worked hard and there wasn’t much money left over for fun and entertainment. After graduating from high school, he married his high school sweetheart Barbara Edgington in 1960. From 1960 to 1966 Bruce and Barb lived in the house that Grandfather Samuel had built. From 1967 to 1987 they lived in the house his Dad built in 1948. They built their new home in 1987. Bruce took over the farm in 1960 and one of the first things he did was modernize the barn by installing a conveyor that allowed him to bring in bales of hay. One other bit of information Bruce learned from a Scotland relative, is that the “Pacific Branch” was the only Fernie branch to have a natural male heir, Bruce, Jr., who now has two sons of his own, another Bruce and his brother Brennan. It looks like the Fernie name may go on for a long time.
Port Angeles on January 8, 1939. The oldest of three sisters, she graduated from Sequim High School in 1957. Barb has lived all of her life in the SequimDungeness area, having lived on several farms in the valley during her childhood. Barb and Bruce Fernie became High School sweethearts shortly after being introduced to each other by Barb’s uncle Johnny King in 1956. After graduation she attended beauty school in Seattle. She and Bruce were married on April 30, 1960 with her sisters and several cousins as attendants. For their entire married life they have lived on the same property in Palo Alto. Her work life began as a beautician in Port Angeles, later working for Dee Witte at her salon on River Road. When she became pregnant with their first child, she quit her job to become a full-time mother. Barb and Bruce had two children, Cindy and Bruce. They now have four grandsons and two great-grandchildren. When her children were in grade school she started a twenty-seven year career as the “lunch lady” at the Sequim High School cafeteria. She made such an impact there that to this day several former students still come to visit her. After retirement she and Bruce bought a motor home and have traveled throughout the United States and into Mexico. Cooking has always been a passion of hers as well as trying and sharing new recipes. Barb has hosted numerous family and extended family gatherings in her home over the years where she shared her love of cooking and most importantly her love of family and friends. She remembers that growing up in Sequim was special because you knew everyone and were friends with everyone. A highlight of the Irrigation Festival has always been the parade, especially

2019 Honorary Pioneer Ron Newton
Ron Newton moved to Sequim in 1957 as an Army officer after completing his education at Oregon State University, Seattle Pacific College (now University) and University of Washington, with his wife, Beverly, and their two, young boys. He received several teaching position offers, but chose to move to Sequim due to fishing opportunities and the safe, small farming community was perfect for raising his family. Ron taught for thirty years with subjects ranging from math and science, physical education, and driver’s ed. He coached high school and middle school football and track teams, accompanied numerous operettas on his bass guitar, was a dedicated worship team member at his church, and was involved with several jazz bands on the Olympic Peninsula. He played for thirty one years with Gay Jones’ band, “The Olympics”, and was a member of “Opus One”, “The Phatt Katz”, and “Stardust”. He was also a member of the Port Angeles Symphony for twelve years playing upright bass. He and his family enjoyed fishing on his boat, beachcombing, clamming and crabbing, hiking every summer in the Olympic Mountains, and foraging for wild mushrooms and wild mountain blackberries. Ron made it to the summit of Mt. Rainier and Mt. Olympus and enjoyed photography outings with his friend, Ross Hamilton. He and his family also loved summer barbecues of salmon on Jamestown Beach with their Native friends and neighbors. Ron and his wife were avid gardeners and were known for their corn garden, with stalks climbing up to ten feet high. They spent their retirement years together traveling around the world to nu-
merous locations until Beverly was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Ron became her primary caregiver until she passed in 2014. At nearly 90 years old, Ron enjoys visiting with his friends and caregivers, hearing from ex-students, dancing with his dear friends at the Sequim Prairie Grange, exercising, reading, and music of all genres.
2019 Honorary Pioneer Marsha Welch
Marsha Welch moved to Agnew with her two children, Richard and Susan in Nov. 1967. She has lived there for 52 years. Her husband has been missing in action in Vietnam for 52 years. They have 9 Grandchildren and 5 Step-grandchildren and 9 Great grandchildren. Marsha started a youth center in the 70’s called POW House. She was a waitress at Cal’s and Birney’s for a couple of years. She coached two drill teams. The youth of Sequim nominated her for Citizen of the year in 1978. In 1980 she started an organization called Koinonia (coin-o-nia) which put on Christian concerts every month for 11 years. The concerts were held at the City Pier and Peninsula College. Also in 1980 she started her own business in Port Angeles called Special times, doing sing-agrams and running a Christian Cafe. Marsha took care of her mother for 22 years till her death at 91 and her Dad till his death at 93. In her 70’s, she worked at the Sequim Walmart greeting people with a song for 10 years. Marsha says that at the age of 82 she can truthfully say that the older she gets the happier she is. continued page 8

2019 Grand Marshal Jaye Moore
Jaye Moore has dedicated her life to helping birds across the Olympic Peninsula for 30-plus years. After 25 years in Sequim, Moore decided to retire from the Northwest Raptor & Wildlife Center this year. As an end cap to her effort, she is this year’s grand marshal for the Sequim Irrigation Festival’s Grand Parade. “It’s an honor,” Jaye said. This May will be Moore’s first time in the Sequim Grand Parade but she’s brought many birds to festival events in the past. She and her husband Gary, a retired foreman for Clallam PUD, said they didn’t do the work for the birds animals for accolades but admits being grand marshal “is pretty cool.” Jaye and her brother Paul were raised in Sekiu by their parents Howard and Maggie Baker. She worked at a cannery, fished and worked for Crown Zellerbach as a logger where she met Gary. They have two daughters, Leanna and Rhea, and three grandchildren. The family moved to Sequim for Gary’s work and because they liked the schools. “It’s just been a great place to live,” Jaye said. Together they like to do “anything outdoors” including fishing, hunting, crabbing, hiking and clamming. As they wind down efforts on the Raptor Center, Jaye said they’re working with Center Valley Animal Rescue in Quilcene to take on their efforts. The Moores took over the Raptor Center in Clallam Bay from D. Byrne and continued it for 32 years between Clallam Bay and Sequim. Jaye said spring and summer was their busiest time going from daylight to way past dark. “You’d be feeding babies every 15-20 minutes,” she said. “You get to one end of the line and it’d be time to start all over again.”
Julia Reandeau
Julia Reandeau lives on a farm with her parents Bob and Chantelle Reandeau as well as her big brother Tommy. She is a fifth grade student at Helen Haller Elementary in Mr. Danielson’s class. Julia’s hobbies include softball, photography, drawing, reading, and writing. In the summer you will find her swimming and camping on the Upper Dungeness River with her family and Photo courtesy Keith Ross / friends, along with her Keith’s Frame Of Mind faithful old farm dog, Heidi, by her side. Julia has deep roots that tie her to Sequim since the 1930’s. Her great grandmother, Mary Schott, was a 2009 Sequim Irrigation Festival Honorary Pioneer. Her great grandfather, William Lloyd Stipe, was a 1998 Honorary Pioneer. Her grandpa, Bill Stipe, continues to farm in the Sequim Valley. Castell_Building_Sign_1.pdf

The Sequim Irrigation Festival celebrates the work that D.R. “Crazy” Callen and his partners did to design and develop the Irrigation Ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the parched prairie. The first headgate on the Dungeness River was lifted on May 1, 1895. On May 1, 1896 the first celebration took place at Crazy Callen’s farm. This was the start of a tradition that would become the oldest continuing festival in Washington state.

The First Irrigation Festival Courtesy of Soroptimist International of Sequim
Bringing irrigation from the Dungeness River to the brown and parched prairie began as a dream of four pioneer settlers who were visionaries of their time. D.R. Callen had moved to Sequim from an irrigated area in Colorado and he convinced James R. Grant, H. Hucksford and Captain Thomas Jones that “water was wealth.” Together they set out to persuade their neighbors to go along with the idea. The skeptics called them “crazy” and said that water could not be made to run uphill; but there Photos courtesy of Museum and Arts Center were those who believed. On July 20, 1895, a group of about 20 people held the first meeting of the Prairie Ditch. Incorporation papers were “The Bicycle Club of Port Townsend chartered a tug boat for signed Nov. 18, 1895, and the hardy pioneers worked all winter the trip to Port Williams. They docked at 11 a.m. and some rode long building the ditch and flume. their bicycles to Sequim while others loaded their vehicles into Money was scarce and the surveyor was paid partly in potawagons. The shining cycles amazed the young people of Sequim, toes. Everyone gave what they could and the women cooked for but the dress of the ‘city folk’ was of interest to everyone. The men the workers. Even the children helped by carrying water, running dressed in turtle neck sweaters, knickers and caps and the ladies errands and tromping clay into the gravel. Finally, the following wore ‘very daring’ short skirts, almost up to their shoe tops. Their spring it was time for the “big day.” On May 1, 1896, the residents outfits were completed with shirtwaists, jackets and perky hats and of the Dungeness Valley and surrounding communities came by the Sequim farm kids thought they all looked rather funny. Long wagon, on horseback and on foot to witness the opening of the wooden tables had been set up and covered with hams, roasts headgate for the first time. Edgar B. Wicklander in “The Grants of of lamb and pork, salads, breads and chicken cooked every way Sequim Prairie,” gives a detailed account of that first celebration: possible. Each family had brought enough food for themselves and (synopsis) one or two other families, and no one went away hungry. “The day dawned fair and warm for May. The Grants arrived “At the appointed time a group of men who had built the ditch at the picnic grounds went up to the upper end to turn the waters of the river into the while the dew was still on new flume. As usual things did not go according to plan. When the grass. Other families the headgate was raised the water refused to turn. Undaunted, the arrived about the same men located a wagon load of clay and picked up a wagon full of time, driving their wagons kids. They dumped the clay at the head of the flume in the gravel from the nearby Sequim and told the kids to jump in. The kids got in to the river’s edge in prairie settlement. Those their bare feet and tromped the clay into the gravel until the water from some close farms flowed over it into the flume. It wound its way, the muddy water walked the dry roads. slowly following the flume, then into the dusty prepared big ditch, Later in the morning and finally all the way to the furrow, right into the picnic area. The groups arrived from Port skeptics who had said that water couldn’t run uphill were at last Angeles. convinced.”

Kjirstin moved from Bellingham, Washington to Sequim five years ago. She takes pride in being a band officer as well as partaking in percussion here at Sequim High School. Kjirstin has chosen foster children as her platform, but more specifically foster children on the peninsula. As being recently taken in by a family she loves to call her own, she knows it is a difficult and stressful time for children and wishes to spread awareness of foster children around the peninsula. When Kjirstin has graduated high school, she wishes to attend the University of Washington to pursue a major in biochemistry. Sponsor: Blue Sky Property Management

Brianna was born and raised in the charming community of Sequim. Living with type 1 diabetes has never held her back from being an honors student or from being a part of the Sequim High School cheer squad. For the past two summers, Brianna has volunteered as a counselor at Camp Leo, a summer camp for children with type 1 diabetes. There, she realized her passion for helping others. When she is older, she would like to attend Seattle Pacific University and become a nurse practitioner specializing in pediatric endocrinology so that she can inspire and encourage other children that share her disease. I hike through the woods up Palo Alto Road. My home is surrounded by water. I spend my time crabbing and kayaking in Sequim Bay. My home is my parents’ hometown and I love listening to stories of them growing up here. My home has fireworks and a logging show every year. My home is a small town where I have room to ride my motorcycle and have bonfires with my family. Sequim is my home and there’s no place like it.

He has a twin sister Genevieve and two older brothers, Gabriel and Zackary. He is in the Hi-Cap program and loves to read, build, and problem solve. Outside of school he likes to play baseball, ride his bike, swim and go on hikes in the great outdoors. Essay: Sequim: “There’s No Place Like Home” - Why is there no place like Sequim? For me there are many safe places to ride bikes, with great trails at parks and bike paths throughout town. Also, there are many beaches to choose from with breathtaking views. Some are beaches with rocks, and with sand and even a lighthouse. There’s always many activities for me to join year round like sports, YMCA, and the library. Also many farms to get fresh food. It’s always the best. All places are familiar to me and make my heart happy. That is why there is no other place like home.
Princess Macy Evans
Sponsor: Lopez Construction Teacher: Mrs. Luengen Bio: Macy is 9 years old and is in Mrs. Luengen’s 3rd grade class at Helen Haller Elementary. Her parents are Marcie and Bob Evans. She has a little sister named Mollie and another one on the way (McKinley). She is a kind and great big sister that loves to play sports. She currently plays basketball, soccer, and golf. Her favorite subject is art because she enjoys drawing. Essay: Sequim: “There Is No Place Like Sequim” - When I first moved here I was an only child but now I’m going to have two sisters. Something else I like about Sequim is the glistening smell of lavender. The sparkling water of the Dungeness River. The beautiful sighting of the majestic bald eagle. The kind people you meet along the way. The huge bridge. The pretty walk ways. The fun Carrie Blake Park. The perfect weather. The beautiful and fragrant smell of pine trees. The relaxing sound of The Miss Congeniality Award, which was given by the other contestants, was awarded to Princess Brianna Cowan. Photo courtesy Sequim Gazette rain. The beautiful green grass.
