Kitsap’s military roots run deep Right here in Kitsap County, Bremerton is home to the longest running Armed Forces Day celebration in the U.S. For 72 years the citizens of Bremerton have taken a day to recognize and celebrate the men and women who have chosen to serve their country. Perhaps one of the clearest indications of Kitsap’s strong ties to the armed forces lies in the fact that Naval Base Kitsap remains the region’s single largest employer with 33,800 employees — according to a recent report from the Kitsap Economic Development Alliance. Not only does the region rely on the military for job security, employment opportunities and economic vitality, but the nation as a whole also relies upon the security provided from those who serve as well. During the Kitsap Economic Development Alliance’s recent Economic Forecast Breakfast, Navy Capt. Edward “Alan” Schrader, the Commanding Officer of Naval Base Kitsap, spoke about some of the goings-on at the area’s Navy installations. One major development at NBK is a planned renovation of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, yet another one of the region’s largest employers – estimated to cost between $2 billion and $5 billion. The plan is part of a massive overhaul of the nation’s four Naval shipyard facilities. “Our shipyard is 127-years strong,” Schrader said. “It needs some work.” PSNS was built during the preWorld War II era, when its function was to manufacture ships. Now, its
function is to repair them, and the renovation will focus on that mission, the captain explained. “Why wouldn’t you have a facility that’s more geared toward repairing things, if that’s what you do?” Schrader said. He said the Navy anticipates the project, called “The Shipyard the Nation Needs,” to get underway sometime in the 2020’s, over the next decade. “There’s going to be plenty of opportunity for work in the shipyard going forward,” he said. “Two-to-five billion worth of infrastructure work is a lot.” While such an economic boost is certainly cause for celebration, we also wish to celebrate the sacrifice and commitment made by each and every service member, in the interest of keeping our nation safe. So from everyone here at Sound Publishing, we ask that you join us in celebrating Armed Forces Day 2019. Within the pages of this special publication you will find photos from past Armed Forces Day celebrations, helpful tips on parade routes and a number of stories which will shed some light on the history and tradition of Bremerton’s Armed Forces Day celebration. Please have a safe and fun Armed Forces Day! Nick Twietmeyer Editor for North Kitsap Herald, Central Kitsap Reporter and Kingston Community News

Proud military town showcases another historic parade 20,000 people are expected to attend the 72nd Armed Forces Day parade. By TYLER SHUEY
tshuey@soundpublishing.com
Saturday, May 18 will mark Bremerton’s 72nd Armed Forces Day Parade and this one is set to be a big one. Depending on weather, some 20,000 people are expected to attend the event, according to Denise Frey, President and CEO of the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce. Sponsored by Kitsap Credit Union, the event is the longest running Armed Forces Day in the nation. This year’s grand marshal honor goes to Admiral James F. Caldwell Jr., who currently serves as the Director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. He is the seventh director of naval reactors since the organization formed in 1949 and has served in this role since 2015. Caldwell also served as the grand marshal in last year’s parade. Caldwell graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering. He also holds a Master of Science in Operations Research. Caldwell commanded the USS Jacksonville in Norfolk, Virginia; the Submarine Development Squadron 12 in New London, Connecticut and the Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii. Locally, Caldwell commanded the Submarine Group 9 at Bangor, according to his U.S. Navy biography. His sea tours included service in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. Caldwell’s operational assignments include duty as a division officer on the USS Boston (SSN 703), engineering officer on the USS Alabama (SSBN 731) (GOLD) and executive officer on the USS Buffalo (SSN 715), according to the U.S. Navy. Last years Armed Forces Day parade Examining Board and later as Undersea Warfare Requirements officer on the staff of Commander in Chief, the U.S Pacific Fleet. He also served as senior member of the Naval Submarine Force’s Tactical Readiness Evaluation Team; on the joint staff as deputy director for Politico-Military Affairs for Europe, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Russia and Africa; and deputy commander for U.S. Strategic Command’s Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike in Omaha, Nebraska
and as Naval Inspector General for the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. His most recent tour was on the Office of Naval Operations Staff as the Director of Navy Staff. Caldwell holds claim to numerous distinguished awards during his long tenure in the military. Some of those include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and the Naval Submarine League’s Charles
A. Lockwood Award for Submarine Professional Excellence. The annual event initially began in 1948, in efforts to recognize local Medal of Honor recipient John “Bud” Hawk. Hawk grew up on Bainbridge Island and joined the U.S. Army two weeks after graduating high school. On August 20, 1944, Hawk was serving in Europe as a sergeant and was wounded in the right thigh while taking cover behind a tree after a German counter attack near Chambois, France. German fire had penetrated the tree trunk, prompting Hawk to quip in 1994, “French apple trees aren’t worth a damn.” Hawk continued to fight despite his wound and willingly exposed himself to intense enemy fire. The Medal of Honor was given to Hawk by President Harry Truman on July 13, 1945 in Olympia. Hawk continued to serve and was wounded three more times by the end of the war, earning a total of four Purple Hearts. After Hawk returned from the war, he attended the University of Washington, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. He then worked as a teacher and principal for over 30 years in the Central Kitsap School District. On April 5, 2008, Hawk received the Medal of Honor Flag in the Capitol rotunda in Olympia. “What I did was not such a big thing,” Hawk said. “I never did anything more than the people I served with. The (Medal of Honor) is a symbol and it stands for service, everybody’s service. I did it for the people who were there and they were doing the same thing for me.” Hawk passed away in 2013 at the age of 89. Jackson Park Elementary in Bremerton was renamed John D. “Bud” Hawk Elementary in his honor. The parade itself will include nearly 200 entries, including a full array of military VIP’s, color guards, marching units, vehicles, boats as well as plenty of civilian entries that include marching bands, floats and equestrian units, according to Frey. There

are 17 marching bands registered so far and each major command will be recognized for their Sailor of the Year, who will ride in a car in the parade. A new entry to the parade this year will be the National Alliance to End Veterans Suicide - an important resource for veterans and their families, Frey said. The non-profit started in September 2008 after founder Rod Wittmier heard a Veterans Analysis statistic that stated 18 veterans were taking their own lives each day. “I stood up and said ‘not in my country,’” Wittmier said. Wittmier and his wife were in a five month seminar to create a community project called Vets Meet Vets. The project grew and by 2011, Witmier renamed the non-profit The National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide. Since its inception, the organization has held winter events, Blankets For Hope and Feast of Valor, for the American Lake VA and surrounding areas, organized and sponsored the Veterans Resource Fair for seven years and have put on 48 Operation Veteran Freedom workshops. National Alliance to End Veterans Suicide initially made their presence in Pierce, Thurston and King county, but now is adding Kitsap County to See PARADE, Page 6

that list by participating in this years parade. A group of 20-30 members of the non-profit will be walking in the parade and carrying the organizations flag. Bremerton Chamber of Commerce President Denise Frey talked about the attraction of the parade and why the location makes it thrive. “The reason this parade is so popular is the fact that it honors our armed forces without being an actual military parade. Bremerton is a proud Navy town and our community turns out every year to show its support of our local armed forces and their families.” Before the parade begins at 10 a.m., there will be an annual pancake breakfast put on by the Bremerton Central Lions Club, which is scheduled to take place at 7 a.m. Entry to the event is $6. As for the parade route, it will remain the same as last year’s, beginning on Warren Avenue and running through 6th Street, then through Park Avenue, 4th Street and Pacific Avenue. The parade will conclude at Pacific Avenue and 8th Street. File photo

Traditional breakfast to precede Armed Forces Day parade Breakfast put on by Bremerton Central Lions Club By TYLER SHUEY
tshuey@soundpublishing.com
Another Armed Forces Day brings another annual pancake breakfast hosted by the Bremerton Central Lions Club. This event has been occurring for nearly 60 years and on Saturday, May 18, the smell of fresh pancakes, eggs and coffee will once again enrich 4th Street in downtown Bremerton. The breakfast will occur at 7 a.m. before the Armed Forces Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. The breakfast menu will include pancakes, eggs, sausage links, milk and coffee, according to James Lamb of the Bremerton Central Lions Club. Lamb joined the Central Lions Club in 1976 after his Commanding Officer in the Navy sent him off to be more involved with the community. This will be Lamb’s 42nd year helping feeding breakfast to the local community. This will be another year of Lamb doing

much of the food preparation, doing everything from flipping pancakes, scrambling eggs and handing out coffee. Lamb added that the weather shouldn’t really be a determining factor in the amount of people that typically show up to the breakfast and then the parade. Around 600 people usually flock to the breakfast year after year to fill their bellies before the big parade. As an interesting aside, the Lions Club breakfast has actually been around longer than the historic parade itself. It was originally called the Stampede Breakfast before the Bremerton Central Lions Club was asked by the Armed Forces Day Parade Committee to have the breakfast moved to before the start of the parade. The partnership has enhanced the community engagement around these events, spurring a long-lasting tradition of Armed Forces Day in the Kitsap community. Regarding the preparation time for the breakfast, Lamb said multiple grills will be used to flip pancakes and fry eggs. A motorhome will be on site to help with the overnight prep of foods as well as getting up at 4 a.m. to start brewing up coffee for the masses. Typically, local politicians will be in attendance for the breakfast, to help serve and greet the local community. Last year’s election saw Rep. Derek

volunteer nearly one million hours in veterans affairs, medical centers and other hospitals throughout this country. The organization provides awards and scholarships to students based on their expression of patriotism through art, speech and volunteerism. “Year after year, the organization continues to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by maintaining memorials to their service and sharing their history with our nation’s youth so that what are nation’s veterans have done for America will not be forgotten,” Wheeler said as part of the proclamation. “I, Greg Wheeler, Mayor of the City of Bremerton, do hereby claim today, April 26, 2019 as a day to celebrate and honor Sandy Kriebel for outstanding volunteer service to veterans and their families by serving as National President of the VFW of the United States Auxiliary,” Wheeler said, ending the proclamation. After the ceremony, Kriebel and members of the VFW Department of Washington Auxiliaries and posts gathered at the Silverdale Burger King to eat and say thanks for the $8,000 donation made last year to the VFW Unmet Needs Program. The next stop for Kriebel was at the VFW Post #4992 where a scout troop and military personnel presented the 27 Flags Program. Later that night, Kriebel made her way to a special dinner that was held at the Central Valley VFW where she was surprised to be greeted by VFW National Commander BJ Lawrence. Kilmer attend the event as well, filling up coffee cups and greeting community members. Lamb said he wasn’t sure which local public figures will be in attendance but he was sure they would be there, as they always are. Also in attendance will be the newly chosen Central Lions Club student ambassadors for 2019, and 2019’s Miss Kitsap and Miss Silverdale. The breakfast will be $6 and children under five-years-old eat free. The Bremerton Central Lions Club also has other upcoming events this summer, including the third annual Beep Baseball Game, which features a team made up of blind and nearblind athletes called The Seattle South King Sluggers. They will take on a team made up of first responders from the Kitsap County area in a double-header. Beep baseball involves slow pitch softball where all players except for

the pitcher and catcher are blindfolded and the softball beeps when thrown or hit. If a defensive player gains control of the batted ball before the player reaches the beeping base the batter is out. If not, the batters team is credited with a run. Last year The Seattle South King Sluggers won a low scoring affair by scoring a few runs late in the game, winning 2-0. “Everyone had great fun and learned much about what life is like without the gift of sight,” the Bremerton Central Lions Club website stated. The event supports The Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight and Hearing. “Many years ago, Helen Keller spoke at the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged the Lions to become ‘knights of the blind,’” according to the club’s website. “Today we embrace the conservation of sight as one of our primary objectives.” File photo
