POSTER ARTIST: TODD FISCHER SHARES INTENT Todd Fischer, a native of the Pacific Northwest, created the artwork for this year’s Juan de Fuca Festival poster. He is no stranger to the beauty the Olympic Peninsula encapsulates and uses this to fuel his work. My goal as an artist is to capture how the area I live in makes me feel about where I work and play with family and friends. At an early age, both of my parents — who are artists in their own right — encouraged me to use art as a creative outlet. Through this practice, I have found a passion for pen-and-ink drawings, metal and woodworking, reclaimed materials, watercolors and acrylics. Over the years, I have carved my artistic niche in the world of cartoons, cars, caricatures and specific art that explains my fascination with surfing and outdoor adventures. I inherited the surfing bug from my father, which has influenced my travels to Oregon, lakes, trails and rivers in between. California, Texas, Hawaii and Mexico. Thank you for letting me share my Surfing continues to influence my artwork perspective with you. I look forward to seeing and adventures, allowing me to enjoy most you somewhere outside. anything the Olympic Peninsula has to offer Todd Fischer — from the mountains to the sea and all the

Born and raised east of the Los Angeles river, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music and telling modern day stories. Las Cafeteras create a vibrant musical fusion with a unique East-LA sound and positive message. Their Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms and rhymes deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments, like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish and Spanglish and add a remix of sounds, from rock to hip-hop to rancheras. Las Cafeteras use music as a vehicle to build bridges among cultures and communities while creating “a world where many worlds fit.”

Fearless front-woman Derina Harvey leads this Celtic rock sensation, who are recent winners of the coveted People’s Choice Award at the 2018 Edmonton Music Awards. The band has rocky, rhythmic undertones layered with strings and keys and topped with Harvey’s world-class vocals. With a show that offers a fresh take on traditional folk songs, as well as an increasing amount of original material, Harvey’s vibrant personality takes center stage with humor, storytelling and, of course, her powerful voice. Derina Harvey Band has been likened to a “rockier” version of Canada’s Great Big Sea — if fronted by Adele — and has earned a reputation as a high-energy live show that leaves many an audience out-of-breath and hollering from their seats.

LEROY BELL & HIS ONLY FRIENDS SATURDAY

LeRoy Bell is an American singer and songwriter who creates a sound that crosses many demographics. Bell has extensive touring experience alongside legendary artists such as B.B. King, Van Morrison, Etta James, Al Green, Michael McDonald, Colin Hay, Mavis Staples, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal, Leon Russell, Sonny Landreth, Charlie Musselwhite and Los Lobos. Bell’s diverse musical experiences have grown him as a touring artist and shaped his musical edge in a way that places him in a league of performers not many can aspire to. In partnership with Casey James, LeRoy Bell co-wrote many songs for other recording artists, most notably two hit singles for Elton John. LeRoy Bell & His Only Friends features experienced musicians Terry Morgan on bass, Davis Martin on drums and Daniel Walker on guitar and keyboards. Morgan has played with Dee Daniels, Pat Wright & the Total Experience Gospel Choir, Dave Lewis, Thelma Houston and others, whereas Martin was previously a member of the band Maktub.

CREME TANGERINE MONDAY

For over a decade, Creme Tangerine has been thrilling audiences in the Pacific Northwest with its unique approach to performing the music of the Beatles and favorite classic rock/pop hits. Hailing from Seattle and featuring five professional musicians, Creme Tangerine performs for thousands each year and creates a dynamic live-music experience filled with energy, fun, humor and spontaneity known only from the Beatles and this era of popular music. Peninsula Daily News / Sequim Gazette

BEN MORRISON SATURDAY

Ben Morrison has tones that are smoky, soulful and timeless, encapsulating the old spirit of country and the contemporary soul of rock and roll. A Northern California, Morrison has been compared to Kris Kristofferson, a male counterpoint to Amy Winehouse and chunky, spicy peanut butter. The origins of Morrison’s sultry and resonant singing, as well as his compelling and introspective original songs, are rooted in family. When Ben was young, his mom played in a folk band and hosted the legendary “Morrison Music Parties,” where he soaked in the spontaneous collaborations of musicians, earning his musical schooling from those living room and front porch jams. The music and the scene were magic, and he decided to do everything in his power to make music his life. From slinging pizzas and slipping off to the open mics next door during his shifts, to volunteering for paid medical research studies, Morrison did everything he could to subsidize his musical future. Over the last 10 years touring the world with The Brothers Comatose, San Francisco’s beloved folk/bluegrass band formed by Morrison and his brother Alex, Morrison has performed at such venerated festivals as High

POOR MAN’S WHISKEY

Sierra, Merlefest, Mountain Stage, Winnipeg Folk Fest (Canada), Port Fairy Folk Fest (Australia), Outside Lands & Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and has traveled through China with the State Department’s American Music Abroad program. Morrison is touring as a solo artist while working on his debut LP, employing musical

friends of all sorts to create a full band representation of his songs.

POOR MAN’S WHISKEY (THE BAND) SATURDAY

Poor Man’s Whiskey are Northern

California’s outlaw music bards who bring a reputation for high-energy shows to stages and festivals worldwide while blending an incomparable fusion of bluegrass, old-time, southern rock and old school jam. Poor Man’s Whiskey has been growing exponentially in the last five years selling out venues across the country, such as the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco. This “high-octane hootenanny” will certainly delight those music lovers seeking a foot-stomping good time. The band has evolved into a ragged, spontaneous beast, pulling from equally deep wells of storytelling originals, expertly crafted covers and zany onstage shenanigans. Poor Man’s Whiskey has released six studio albums and boasts a stunning repertoire of songs, creating a new show at every performance. In addition to their upbeat and original sets, Poor Man’s Whiskey has developed special “tribute sets” with their original bluegrass Americana twists including “Dark Side of the Moonshine” (bluegrass interpretation of the classic Pink Floyd album), “Graceland” (tribute to the classic Paul Simon album), “Old and In the Way” (tribute to the Allman Brothers Band) and “Tribute to Kate Wolf.” At our 2019 festival stage they will perform a tribute set featuring music by “The Band.” >> PERFORMERS continues on Page 12

LAURA LOVE WITH TERRY HUNT SUNDAY

Laura Love is an award-winning “folk-funk” singer/ songwriter/bassist who has been touring throughout the world since the early 1990s. Love has released 11 CDs on major and minor labels; she has performed at nearly every great music festival in North America and Australia; she has composed commissioned music for dance and theater productions; and she is a published author. After taking nearly a decade off the festival/touring circuit (including the Juan de Fuca Festival) to live off grid and raise her daughter, Love is returning to the stage to continue where she left off. To that end, she exploded back onto the festival scene in 2017, taking the Kate Wolf, Strawberry and Philadelphia Folk Music Festivals by storm. With these powerful performances she and her stellar guitarist, Terry Hunt, showcased a whole new batch of songs that left audiences leaping to their feet mid-set and some concertgoers telling her “she was even better than she’d been years ago.”

BARRIO MANOUCHE SATURDAY

Barrio Manouche is an acoustic San Francisco-based international septet (Spain, Quebec, France, Brasil and California) playing music that will take you on a magical journey, frequently joined by artists from around the globe. The ensemble has been recognized for its surprise concerts, innovative style, complex technique and their passion for their musical improvisation. The band performs a repertoire of original instrumental compositions with a unique sound that’s difficult to classify but instantly recognizable. The music of Barrio Manouche is deeply influenced by a range of musical traditions, from the swing of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, to the hot jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, with nods to the gypsy soul of eastern Europe, a flare of the flamenco of Paco de Lucía and hints of the avant-garde sounds of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane.

Rainbow Girls are an eclectic folk trio hailing from the golden countryside just north of California’s Bay Area. Made up of three unique musical talents — Vanessa May, Erin Chapin and Caitlin Gowdey — these women effortlessly combine soul-touching harmonies, textured instrumentals and poignant lyrical content into an unusually beautiful sonic tapestry. Pairing their voices with an ever-changing amalgamation of acoustic and slide guitar, keys, upright bass, voice, harmonica and an array of more unexpected vocal techniques like beat-boxing and mouth trumpet, they create engaging and emotionally moving live performances. Originally formed in Santa Barbara, Calif., in 2010, the Rainbow Girls have spread their musical wings both internationally and domestically. From busking on the streets of Europe to playing pubs and theaters in the UK, to house concerts, festivals and shows in the U.S., their music delves deeply into themes of the human experience.

TONY FURTADO WITH STEPHANIE SCHNEIDERMAN SUNDAY

Very few musicians of any stripe personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Furtado is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele. He mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef. Trying to pin down Stephanie Schneiderman to any one genre, talent or discipline is next to impossible. Since her solo career began with a coveted spot at the Lilith Fair, Schneiderman has earned extensive NW radio play, a devout following and multiple appearances with some of the nations top touring acts, including Aimee Mann, Hall & Oates, Heart, Train, Pat Benatar, Chicago, Madeleine Peyroux, Andy Summers and Marc Cohn.

BALLET VICTORIA SATURDAY/SUNDAY

JFFA is committed to just one legacy act — a group that we feature at our festival every single year. That group is Ballet Victoria. Ballet Victoria is a boutique professional ballet company that presents four yearly productions in its home base of Victoria, B.C. They are known for their dramatic, technically demanding performances. Audiences can always expect shows that are entertaining but also full of great artistic depth, satisfying to both aficionados and to those just discovering ballet. Under the direction of Paul Destrooper, innovation is always happening. Their programs utilize a diverse range of choreographies, from Baroque rock music, from opera to folk songs. The Juan de Fuca Festival will enjoy excerpts from their remarkably rich and varied oeuvre.

JEFFREY MARTIN SATURDAY

After spending years teaching English, Jeffrey Martin tours full time now. He is always making music, and he is always coming through your town. He misses teaching like you might miss a good old friend who you know you’ll meet again. 14 MAY 24-27, 2019 | JUAN DE FUCA FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

Kutapira means “sweetness” in the Shona language of Zimbabwe, a fitting title for a band that plays a fusion of Zimbabwean marimba with West African and Afro-Cuban percussion. What started out 13 years ago as a youth world music initiative has evolved into the crowd-pleasing percussion explosion known today as Kutapira. Zimbabwean marimba, Afro-Cuban and West African rhythms, reggae, samba, Afrobeat, funk, jazz, Cumbia, disco and hip-hop all contribute to a fusion of styles intelligently selected, seamlessly blended and brought to you by Kutapira.

LUCKY BROWN’S FUNKWAYS FRIDAY

Lucky Brown is the muse and stage persona of American composer Joel Ricci, who conducts various groups of musicians drawn from his Westsound Collective in a dynamic and ever-changing live show. Via his dozens of self-produced deep-funk vinyl singles released in Europe over the past decade, he has been hailed by music mavens worldwide as a deep funk pioneer. Funkways is an original rhythmic endeavor kicking up dust at the crossroads of primitive funk and vernacular jazz. Organized by composer Lucky Brown, Funkways’ mission is to commemorate, celebrate and consecrate true soul music as played from the heart, and to engender cultural health by promoting greater neighborhood social cohesion.

SEA STARS MONDAY

The music of Katie Gray and Kurt Baumann, collectively known as Sea Stars, is a mood to be experienced. Heartfelt and somber, mysterious and haunting, uplifting and hopeful, these are but a few words that often swim around the room to define the music the two singers and songwriters invoke. Gray and Baumann enjoy working both together and apart in their musical adventures. Gray has been a guest vocal with groups such as Band of Horses, Nightmares on Wax, Ani Difranco and Random Rab, while Baumann enjoys to focus primarily on recording and performing with his band The Burned. ABAKIS

MICAELA KINGSLIGHT

FRIDAY/SATURDAY

MONDAY

Abakis — aka Aba Kiser — grew up in Virginia, singing jazz at her father’s restaurant. Musical firebrand and multi-instrumentalist, Abakis creates orchestral folk pop with a heart ache for classic country and swing. Hard to pin down, but instantly familiar, her tongue-in-cheek lyricism, vintage vocals and Koetke-style picking guitar paint a sonic kaleidoscope. After nearly a decade of touring around the states, Kiser settled in Brooklyn to release her debut album, “I’m One Too,” where the nuanced complexity of her raw folk songs expanded to contain an entire orchestra thanks to composer and producer Kate Copeland. Her current band, Abakis & Company, now sways with soulful folk and country swing, blending these together with elements of jazz. In 2016 Abakis was selected as a fellow of the Dosti Music Project, a collaborative music residency bringing together musicians from India, Pakistan and the United States.

With expressive vocals, elegant guitar work and poetic lyricism, Micaela Kingslight has made her home in Port Townsend after years of leading bands and touring around the U.S. She now performs with her own original music trio and regional groups, including local favorite Strong Sun Moon. Armed with a looper pedal and hand crafted guitars, Kingslight comes ready to rock your socks with original groovy, bluesy, soul-folk sounds. Her catalog of songs is varied and extensive after years as a songwriter, solo performer, bandleader, band member and teacher.

CIRCUS NO. 9 SUNDAY

Circus No. 9 is East Tennessee’s own progressive bluegrass outfit, blurring the lines between bluegrass, jazz, jam bands and more. Described as “John Hartford meets John

Coltrane,” the group has appeared alongside artists David Grisman, Bryan Sutton and Larry Keel, to name a few. Comprised of musicians Matthew Davis, Thomas Cassell and Vince Ilagan, Circus No. 9 is one of the most exciting new bands on the acoustic music scene today.

STRINGOLOGY SATURDAY

The music of Stringology is best described as acoustic jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt Hot Swing, playing some old standards of the ’30s and ’40s, with some Bossa, Latin and a few other surprises. The group boasts the talents of Eric Bogart on guitar, Terianne Stratton with her rhythm ukulele and Tracy Grisman’s bass holding down the groove.

A LITTLE BIT OFF FRIDAY KIDS’ SHOW/SATURDAY

Co-founded by Amica Hunter and David

Cantor, A Little Bit Off (ALBO) began as a theatrical collaboration between two acrobatic clowns dedicated to bringing wonder and laughter to the audiences of the world. Drawing inspiration from the old American vaudevillians and the work of French artist James Thierree, ALBO has grown to produce three fully developed shows with carefully selected themes, hilarious characters, intricate relationships, mind-boggling tricks and a very quirky, offbeat flavor. The company has won over a dozen awards. ALBO’s most recent work is a critically acclaimed full-length physical comedy show called Bella Culpa, featuring two quirky servants in an Edwardian manor. This slapstick comedy follows the servants as they bustle around, trying in vain to complete their chores. With a mess of silver buckets, a slew of uninvited furry guests and impressive circus-style acrobatic flair, this off-beat comedy will leave everyone chortling. >> PERFORMERS continues on Page 16

True North is emerging as a Pacific Northwest powerhouse of intelligent, memorable songs. Their lush instrumental and vocal performances, with crazy-good picking and harmonies, are deeply rooted in traditional folk and bluegrass genres. Fronted by award-winning singer-songwriters Kristen Grainger and Dan Wetzel, the playing is subtle and understated, giving their songs cohesion and fluidity. Grainger’s engaging vocals and sweet melodies are charged with a gentle longing and beautifully paired with Wetzel’s layered harmonies. On stage, True North exemplifies the most compelling aspects of live acoustic roots music: storied songwriting, mad instrumental skills and vocals that alternately bring you to tears or raise ecstatic hairs on the back of your neck. conjures images of the rolling green hills of Ireland.
