WHAT MY HOME MEANS TO ME 2019

Judging for these essays and posters is quite difficult as the students write such colorful and imaginative stories about their homes and many are gifted artists. For each school, there is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Essay winner and 1 Poster winner. The Sequim Association of Realtors sponsors prizes such as new bicycles, art cases and gift certificates. Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Every year, the 3rd Grade students of Helen Haller and Greywolf Elementary Schools are invited to participate in an Essay and Poster Contest called, “What My Home Means To Me.” This is held in conjunction with American Home Week and Realtor Associations all over the country sponsor this contest. The Sequim Association of Realtors has participated in this event for over 38 years and we are pleased to feature the winning essays and posters for both schools this year. Students are asked to write an essay describing what makes their “home” special to them. The type of home they live in or who they live with are not the deciding factors on who wins the Essay portion. Winners are selected by the ‘heart’ with which they write. They often share about siblings or favorite rooms in their home. The Posters are also reviewed for the time and effort put into drawing their home.

Prizes awarded per school are: • 1st prize Essay: Bicycle/helmet + $20.00 Sweet Spot gift card • 2nd place Essay: Skateboard/helmet + $20.00 Sweet Spot gift card • 3rd place Essay: Pogo Stick/helmet + $20.00 Sweet Spot gift card • Best Poster: Art Case + $20.00 Sweet Spot gift card • Gift cards for the 3rd grade teachers.

2019 WASHINGTON STATE YOUTH OF THE YEAR You might have heard of Addison “Addie” Holland, a tenacious young woman and active member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula since 2007. She credits Inspire Her, Her a Club mentorship program for young girls, and the support of a staff member, with developing her self-confidence and hope for her future. This was not how Addie’s story began. Her early memories include being looked down on and badly bullied at a young age. A speech impediment caused by hearing loss from early childhood made her an instant target for tormentors. Additionally, her home life was challenging, which led to her falling behind in the classroom. Rather than letting hardship define her, Addie has a different perspective; “I have chosen to overcome these challenges, to push myself to keep going, and to become successful. The Boys & Girls Club helped me overcome these obstacles by allowing me to have a place where social constructs were left at the door. The Club got me involved in programs that provided me with a purpose and taught me how to overcome life’s challenges.”

In sixth grade, Addie set her sights on becoming Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula and began building toward this dream. Now, in eleventh grade, Addie has realized her dream by winning the local 2019 Olympic Peninsula Youth of the Year competition. In March, she competed against 13 of her peers at the 2019 Washington State Youth of the Year Gala. To get to this point, Addie invested extensive efforts including community service, personal essays, and public speaking. At the Gala, Addie received top marks from the panel of judges she presented before and was acknowledged for her passion of how the Club has made a positive impact upon her life. With her expressed dedication, resiliency, and heart for her Club, Addie was named 2019 Washington State Youth of the Year! She received a $5,000 scholarship to pursue higher education and earn a college degree. Addie now moves onto the 2019 Pacific Region Youth of the Year competition in Hollywood. For additional information regarding the Washington State Youth of the Year Gala, visit www.washingtonclubs.org/youth-of-the-year/.

“I never knew what a home was until I got to the Club. I have become a part of a family that will always be there for me. If it weren’t for this family, I would likely be on a different path. I’m a leader and a role model who has a bright future ahead of me… and that’s all because of the Boys & Girls Club.” –Addie Holland On the heels of the Washington State competition, Addie was the keynote speaker for the Building Great Futures Breakfast at the Vern Burton Center in Port Angeles. During her speech she stated, “I have a future, I can look forward to college." Addie continued to express, “I have become a strong independent woman because of my Club.” This strength and vision for a future is what The Boys & Girls Clubs strive to foster in all members. Currently, Addie and Club leadership are sharing with our community about the Boys & Girls Club experience and are helping fundraise for a new Clubhouse to better serve Port Angeles youth.

Addie is a confident, driven young woman and a dedicated champion for the Boys & Girls Club. We are excited and honored to have her represent both our community and our Clubs as 2019 Washington State Youth of the Year.
