Peter John Majar Sr. Peter John Majar Sr., age 91, passed away at his home in Aberdeen, Washington, on April 16, 2019. Pete Sr. was born on July 29, 1927, in Aberdeen, Washington, to Jovo and Kate Basich Majar. He graduated Weatherwax High (Aberdeen) in 1945 and after serving in the Army attended the University of Washington. On March 10, 1956, Pete married Shirley Ann Stakkestad at Edison Lutheran Church. They had three children, Melissa Lamoreaux, Maria Majar and Peter Majar Jr. Pete and Shirley Majar remained married until Shirley’s death on Sept. 18, 1998. In June, 2000, Pete married his second wife, Mary Ann Majar, at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church and remained married until Pete’s passing. Professionally, Pete leveraged an early accounting background and a keen strategic business sense to rise up to run Hoquiam Plywood as its Head General Manager, guiding the firm profitably through both robust and lean times in the forest product industry. He also proudly served as a board member of Timberland Savings Bank, serving as a board of director until his retirement at the age of 75. Pete was deeply devoted to family and counted both his immediate family and extended brother-inlaws and sister-in-laws and their extended families as some of his best friends. In addition to his focus on family and business, Pete loved his community service involvement with the Lions Club, Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway and enjoyed a regular golf game through his first 90 years with plans to return to the course this summer! He spoke fondly of his deep friendships garnished through all the above organizations. Pete is survived by his wife Mary Ann, his children Melissa Lamoreaux, Maria Majar and Peter Majar, Jr., his son-in-law Steve Lamoreaux, his daughter-in-law Laura Majar, his granddaughter Zoe Lamoreaux and numerous nieces and nephews, inclusive of his Goddaughter Jennifer Sutherland and Godson John Stakkestad. Funeral Services were held Thursday, April 25, at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church with a celebratory luncheon following at the Parrish Hall. A graveside service followed at Fern Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Pete Sr.’s name to either Amazing Grace Lutheran Church or the Lions Club of Aberdeen.
Phillip J. Sheridan & Virginia R. Laird Phillip Joseph Sheridan was born Dec. 3, 1944, in Seattle, son of Judge Phillip G. Sheridan and Evelyn Sheridan. Phillip grew up attending Perpetual Help and Immaculate Conception primary schools, Everett High and Gonazga University. He met wife Virginia while working in real estate in Everett and Mukilteo. Virginia Ruth Laird was born April 10, 1941, in Colorado, daughter of Henry and Ruth Laird. Tragically Henry died when Virginia was just 5 years old, also leaving her two older brothers. Ruth soon remarried Jay Brownell, a wonderful man and father of one boy. Beautiful Virginia Ruth Brownell graduated from Compton High School in 1957. Soon to marry Don Ziemer and both went to Germany with the Army for a few years and returned to California with a son, Andrew Allen Ziemer, and soon a daughter, Marilea Ziemer. What a wonderful and loving mother she was! In 1977, the Ziemers moved to Edmonds, Washington, where Virginia excelled in real estate, divorced Don, changed her name to Gini and later met and fell in love with Phil. Gini knew a great deal about collectibles and antiques so the duo set up the Canary Cottage Antiques shop in Raymond. The antique shop grew into an auction house, estate sale operation and furniture repair and restoration company. They shared 37 happy years together! They ended up having heart attacks within 24 hours of each other. Ginny died instantly at home on Feb. 11, 2019. She is survived by her daughter Marilea Ziemer, son Andrew Ziemer and granddaughter Jessica Jay Ziemer. While Phil, who was already suffering in the hospital from cancer complications, died on March 3, 2019. Phillip is survived by sister Marypat and numerous cousins. A celebration of their lives was held Sunday, April 14, at the Raymond Elks Lodge, 326 Third Street, Raymond, WA 98577. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond, Washington.

Nancy N. Hanrahan Nancy N. Hanrahan passed away at the age of 87 on April 2, 2019. Born Jan. 11, 1932, to Winifred and Donald Hanrahan in Montesano, Washington. Nancy graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen, Washington. After attending the University of Washington, Nancy married David L. Woodland, they lived in Aberdeen, Washington and later divorced. Nancy worked with children in Aberdeen then as a real estate agent. Nancy moved to Olympia in 1977, bringing most of her children with her. Her oldest son Patrick was in a devastating auto accident that she dedicated herself to. She went back to college to earn her bachelor’s degree and then her Master’s degree in 1990. Nancy became a mental health counselor specializing in family dynamics. Nancy is survived by her six children Patrick Woodland, Steven Woodland, Blake Woodland (Lori), Scott Woodland, Laura McLeod (Mark) and Paula Flint (James); her 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren that she loved very much. Nancy’s passions were her family, debating politics, traveling, her friendships and analyzing people. She visited Hawaii and Europe as well as many trips to the “beach house” In Tokeland, Washington with her family. Nancy will be missed as she was a force to be reckoned with. She passed on her knowledge to all that would listen. A remembrance of her life was planned for April 20, to be held at her beloved beach house in Tokeland, Washington.
Mary E. Anderson Mary Ellen Anderson, 76, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2019. Raised in Seattle, Mary has also lived in Olympia and Ocean Shores. She is survived by her husband, Richard “Andy,” nine children and 27 grandkids. Funeral services were held April 11, 2019, at St. Michael Parish, downtown Olympia, followed by a reception at the church and burial at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Tumwater. Eileen Jelovich a long time resident of Aberdeen went to be with the Lord on April 18, 2019, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia, Washington. Eileen is preceded in death by her husband Tony, son Ed, and niece Joann. Also waiting to greet Eileen were her brothers Sylvester, Chub, Theo, Emil, Benny, and her sisters Elinor, Marie, Charlotte, and Bea. Born to William and Rose in South Dakota, Eileen moved to Aberdeen as a young woman where she meet and married Tony. Together they raised four children, Ed (Linda) Jelovich, Cathy (Jim) Torgerson, John (Melody) Jelovich, and Toni (Tammy) Jenkins-Jelovich. Eileen is also survived by her grandchildren Troy, Cayla, Travis, Nikki, Erin, Ashlee, Justin, Seth, Haylle, and 10 great-grandchildren. Eileen enjoyed volunteering in her community and spent several years helping at the soup kitchen and taking care of the flowers at church. She also loved to garden, attend plays, and travel around the world. A Rosary was held on Monday, April 29, 6:30 p.m. at Harrison Family Mortuary. Eileen’s funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 30, 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Sharon Louise McKoon, 76 years of age and a lifetime Harborite, died on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at Providence Saint Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington. She was born on Sept. 3, 1941, in Aberdeen, Washington, to Vernon Stanley and Lesta (Jarvis) Rogers. She was raised in the Copalis Crossing area and graduated from the Moclips High School. She later attended the Grays Harbor College. On June 6, 1961, she was married to Ronald Warren McKoon at Pacific Beach, Washington, and they made their home at Moclips, Washington. Sharon was a teacher’s aide at Pacific Beach Elementary School for some 30 years. Her hobbies included raising flowers, taking care of her dog, Bliss, and farm animals. Her most memorable time was when she married Ron McKoon, as well as having her children and spending quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will long be remembered for her love of life and that she was a very hard worker in everything she did in life. Sharon Louise McKoon is survived by her sons, David L. Ridley of Pocatello, Idaho, and Greg L. McKoon of Olympia, Washington; her daughter, Tawny L. Proulx of Lyndon, Illinois; her sister, Carol Ann Ennis of Naselle, Washington; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and other relatives. Her husband, Ronald W. McKoon, preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2003. At her request there will be no formal funeral service. Private vault inurnment will be held in the Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam, Washington. Rebecca Lou Reynolds, 66, of Ocean Shores, Washington passed away peacefully on Monday, April 15, 2019, at Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center. Rebecca was born Jan. 6, 1953, in Long Beach, California to Edgar and Vesta (Rodgers) Lydic. She was raised in Bellflower, California and attended Mayfair High School. In June 2002 Rebecca married Jeffrey Reynolds. He survives her at the family home. Rebecca had worked as a beautician and enjoyed sewing, making dolls and clothes. She attended Faith Community Church in Ocean Shores. In addition to her loving husband Jeffrey, she also survived by her children, Nicole M. Schenck (Louis) Desmond of Winlock, Washington, Caitlin A. Schenck of Colton, California, Ryan P. Schenck of Perris, California; brother Devin (Debbie) Lydic of Escondido, California; her step-father Ronald Pierce of Vista, California; grandson Eric P. Desmond and granddaughter Savannah N. Desmond. A celebration of her life wah held on Sunday, April 28, at Faith Community Church in Ocean Shores. Leo Channing Brutsche Leo Channing Brutsche, age 95, passed away peacefully in Aberdeen, Washington, on April 17, 2019. Leo is survived by his sons, Tommy and Robert; grandsons, Michael and Matthew; great-granddaughters, Kylee and Jordyn Brutsche. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean Brutsche in June of 2015. A celebration of his life was held on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Marlatt Funeral Home Chapel, 713 Central Avenue N., Kent, WA. Shirley (Matthews) Horton Shirley Illene (Mathews) Horton received her angel wings on April 19, 2019, in Centralia, Washington, with her family by her side. Shirley was born Oct. 9, 1927, to Clarence (Bud) and Esther Matthews. She married Howard Horton in 1947. Together they had three children, Michael Horton (Kay), Renee Goldsby (Wayne), and Jan Yenne (Dave). Her grandchildren include Dan Horton, Shawn Goldsby (Trisha), Stacey Easterbrook (Curtis), John Cooper (Marie); great-grandchildren Kynan and
Lawsen Goldsby, Addison and Ellie Easterbrook, Lyla and Mila Cooper. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Howard, granddaughter Nicole Goldsby and sister Arlayne Odle. Shirley and Howard owned and operated a cranberry farm in Grayland, Washington, before retirement. Shirley will be remembered for her love of God and Church. At Shirley’s request, the family will have a private gathering.

Janis Kay Hindman, 65, passed away from cancer in Hoquiam on April 20, 2019, at Pacific Care Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Aberdeen, Washington, Sept. 23, 1953. Janis graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen. For many years she worked at Duffy’s No. 1 until a back injury caused an early retirement. She was a member of the G.H. Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hoquiam. Janis loved to crochet and embroidery and made many blankets and pillow cases for friends and family. She won ribbons at G.H. County Fair for her pillow cases. Recently she started making beaded pictures. She loved Bingo and played three times a week. Her dog Gizmo was a joy to her. Her parents, Russell and Maxine Hindman, predeceased her. She is survived by her sister Cheryl Bales, her nephew Michael Balagot, niece Lisa Felts and longtime friends and caregivers Tom and Pamela Stone. A memorial took place on May 5, 2019, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hoquiam, Washington. John R. (Jack) Couper went home to be with the Lord on March 17, 2019, following a short illness. Jack was born Nov. 20 1934, in Okanogan, Washington to Evelyn and Dwight Couper. Jack grew up in Eastern Washington and relocated to Aberdeen in the mid 60s and worked for Timberland Opportunities, building picnic tables for a number of years. Jack is survived by his brother Robert D. (Bob) Couper of Puyallup, Washington, and a large number of cousins, nieces and nephews and his many friends in Aberdeen and the Aberdeen Manor where he lived most of his adult life. He was preceded in death by his sister Rita and his parents. A memorial service to celebrate his life was held Saturday, May 11, 2019, at the Aberdeen Manor, 505 N “F” Street.
Andrew (Andy) Christian Bohrnsen passed away at his home in Goodyear, Arizona, on April 4 of this year. Andy was born on April 12, 1949, in Spokane, but he was raised in Hoquiam, Washington, where his dad was Superintendent of Schools and his mom was a teacher. He was a straight-A student and a standout athlete in football, wrestling and golf. Andy graduated from the University of Washington in 1971 (magna cum laude) and remained a Husky fan and booster for the rest of his life. He graduated from the Gonzaga School of Law (magna cum laude) and passed the Washington State Bar in 1974. Andy then embarked on one of the busiest and most successful careers any lawyer could aspire to. He tried over a hundred jury trials, in state and federals courts, to verdict — a remarkable achievement for any lawyer, by any measure. He argued 75 appeals in various state and federal courts of appeal. Again, a remarkable achievement for any lawyer in any era. Andy was a competitor. He was a fighter. He was a partner in the Spokane firm of Bohrnsen, Stocker, Smith, Luciani, Adamson at the time of his passing. One of the greatest, if not the greatest star in Andy’s life was his wife Lynn. Her care and devotion to him were more than a source of comfort. She inspired him. She truly walked with him until the end. Andy had a deep spiritual side. His good psychology was usually also good theology. Andy is survived by a loving family that remained important to him, including his wife Lynn, his sons Kevin, Christian, Matthew and Michael, and his daughter Ann. He is also survived by his brother John and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Andy’s passing has left a big void in many of our lives. A memorial service was held at Hennessy Funeral Home in Spokane, Washington on May 4.
“Corky” Roy Jacobs “Corky” Roy Jacobs, 90, born July 19, 1928, passed away at his home on April 13, 2019. He is survived by his wife Debbie; children: Seth, Jon, Derek, Kyle and Robin, extended family and grandchildren. He was affiliated with USMC, Veterans, Footprinters, Elks, Smoke Shop and LeMays. Per his request, there will be no services. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.
Dennis Dotson Sr. Dennis Dotson Sr., 82, Oakville resident and owner of Dotson and Sons Construction, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2019, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington. Dennis was born on Jan. 22, 1937, in Ira, Virginia, to Earl and Ruby (Young) Dotson. He grew up in the coal mine country of Virginia and worked cutting timber for the mines as a young kid. In 1963, he moved to Michigan for a while and then back to West Virginia. He then moved to the Oregon coast, where he fell timber for the next 15 years. In 1974, he moved to Aberdeen and then to Oakville in 1977 and has lived there ever since. Dennis has owned and operated Dotson and Sons Construction for the last 38 years, building homes in the Grays Harbor, Pacific and Lewis counties areas and was on the job as recently as five weeks ago. He was a member of the NRA and enjoyed hunting with his hounds, fishing and working. Dennis is survived by a son Dennis (Vicki) Dotson of Elma, Washington, and a daughter, Robin Kinkade of Oakville; four brothers: Alvie, Ervin, Tony and Sam Dotson; two sisters, Nell Buchholz and Betty Lewis; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Dixie. There will be a celebration of life at a later date and details will follow in The Daily World. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Washington.

Lilly A. Einert Lilly Anna Lena (Ann) Coughran Bassett Einert passed away peacefully on April 11, 2019, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia, Washington. She was 99 years and almost four months old. (Yes, when you’re that amazing, you count the months). She was born Dec. 24, 1919, to Charles P. Coughran and Carrie May Roberts Coughran in Norman, Arkansas. On July 9, 1937, Ann married Leighton Austin Bassett in Arkansas. They soon moved to McCleary, Washington, where they lived and raised their family, consisting of four boys — Don, Ken, Jerry and Mike, and daughter Karen. As if raising five children wasn’t enough, Ann worked at Mark E. Reed Hospital in McCleary for 20-plus years. After retirement, Leighton and Ann enjoyed traveling south to the sun, especially Quartzite and Yuma, Arizona. Sadly, Leighton passed away in 1980. In 1984, Ann married Ewell C. Einert in McCleary, Washington. They spent many years working on their extensive garden, fishing, camping,and traveling south to Yuma before his death in 2011. Ann then moved to the Beehive Retirement Center in McCleary, Washington. She enjoyed playing bingo, Sunday church service, visiting with friends, weekly pizza/game days with Ken & Karen and Sunday dinners with the Olson & Vessey families. Throughout her life, Ann enjoyed gardening; cooking (her cinnamon rolls, blackberry cobbler, creamed
corn, and biscuits & gravy were family favorites); clam digging, camping, playing Aggravation, cards and dominoes (she always won); and truly anything involving time with her family. She loved watching sports, especially the Seattle Mariners. Ann was extraordinarily warm and kind, making everyone around her feel welcomed and loved. She claimed that the secret to her long life was that she “never stopped moving” and that she used half & half (because that makes everything better). Ann was preceded in death by her five siblings, her parents, her sons Jerry and Mike Bassett, her daughter Karen Bassett Olson, her son-in-law John Olson, daughter-in-law Wendy Bassett, grandson Austin Bassett, great-grandson Greyson Vessey and an infant daughter, Patricia. She is survived by her son Ken (Kelly) Bassett of Olympia, Washington; Don (Jeannie) Bassett of San Clemente, California; numerous nieces and nephews; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild with another on the way. A graveside service for immediate family was held on Thursday, April 18, at McCleary Cemetery. A celebration of a loooong life was held at the McCleary VFW Hall. Gregory Herbert Joines Gregory Herbert Joines of Montesano passed away Sunday, April 14, 2019, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. He was 67. He was born Dec. 26, 1951, to Major Clinton and Marian Eilleen Joines. Gregory was raised in Elma and attended high school there. He married Debra (Sutherby) Joines on Dec. 22, 1973, in Elma. She resides at their home in Montesano. He joined the Army and was honorably
discharged. He worked as a firewood bundle salesman. He was a member of AA at Calvary Chapel in Montesano. Gregory was a collector of many things, including rocks, canes, Wade Englunds, coins, paintings and heart rocks. In addition to his wife Debra, he is also survived by a son Jason Joines of Boardman, Oregon; daughter Angie Brown of Montesano; brothers Dennis Joines of California and Richard Joines of Colorado; sisters Cheri Finger of Elma and Linda
Anthony Cemelich — Aug. 11, 1922 to April 12, 2019 One of the last greatest generations, Anthony “Tony” Cemelich, passed onto his eternal home on April 12, 2019. His life was a testimony of a man, husband, father and citizen that was memorable in many ways. Born in Hoquiam on Aug. 11, 1922, to Mark and Anna Cemelich, his early years were marked by the country in the area of the Great Depression. From childhood until the end of his life, he lived a life of tenacity and hard work. Tony graduated from HHS in 1942 and, shortly thereafter, entered the Navy, serving in the Asiatic Pacific theatre from 1943-1946. His military years were a highlight in his life, often reminiscing about the people and places he had experienced. In July 1947, while transporting a friend to Tacoma, he met Marianne Sterbick. It was love at first sight and three months later, they were married, a marriage lasting 67 years. In 1947, he also began his career as a Hoquiam fireman, retiring in 1974. His fellow firefighters were his compatriots and even after retiring, he retained his strong ties with his friends at the station. But Tony’s true passion was working on his property on the bay (off the Hoquiam Airport Road). When he wasn’t at the fire station, he would be down at the bay, firing up his small tug boats and going out into the Grays Harbor Bay to pick up loose logs. He had all the equipment needed to pick up his haul from the water (with the help of his son, Peter), then load it onto his log truck and take it to be sold for wood products. When Tony
wasn’t selling logs, he was finding salvaged products that he would acquire and then sell his inventory of industrial odds and ends. Tony was an active member of Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church, a 4th degree Knights of Columbus member and worked on various projects at church. During his retirement years, he spent a lot of time traveling with his wife. He traveled to Florida for 20-plus years visiting his son Anthony and his family. Another memorable trip was traveling to Croatia, his parents’ homeland, where he explored his heritage and met extended family members that were still living there. In 2010, the city of Hoquiam honored him as Pioneer of the Year. Tony stood out as a man who was self-made in the simplest way, by hard work, and his dedication to faith, family, and self-preservation. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. After his wife died in 2014, Tony reluctantly moved to Vancouver so he could be closer his daughters, Marianne and Julie. But his heart was in Hoquiam and he often spoke of how he missed his life there. He is survived by his sons, Anthony and Peter, daughters, Marianne and Julie, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Services were held on Wednesday April 17, in Hoquiam, Washington. A viewing was at Coleman’s Mortuary and then a Rosary and Mass at Our Lady of Good Help Church with burial and reception following.

Loving husband, father, grandpa and veteran David Carl Holm passed away Friday, April 5, 2019, at Providence St. Peter Hospital. He was 82. David was born on Feb. 18, 1937, to Gunnar and Kaarina Holm in Berkeley, California. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1955 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy. David retired as a Chief Machinist Mate and served tours in Taiwan, Vietnam and Korea aboard the USS Hancock and the USS Ramsey. After 20 years, David was discharged from the military and went to work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He worked at “Shop 38” for 20 years before his retirement. On Oct. 11, 1963, David married Virginia Johnson in Coronado, California. They enjoyed many family camping trips and wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2014. David loved watching old western shows and football. He was a true “12th Man” and watched the Seahawks every game. David is survived by his daughters Vicki (Ron) Montoure and Valerie (Ron) Foulds both of Hoquiam; sons Daniel (Nancy) Holm and Jeff (Shelby) Johnson both of Bremerton; sister Pat (Dick) Pfremmer of Jacksonville, Oregon; six grandchildren Erinn (Keith) Ounsted, Kelsey Foulds, Katie (Jeff) Foulds, Jeremy (Amber) Foulds, Josh Holloway, and Riley (Jennifer) Johnson; and four great-grandchildren Mason, Addy, Ellison, and Emeri. He is also survived by numerous family member in the San Francisco Bay area that he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Virginia Lee Holm. Charles Bernard Herzog of Montesano passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019, at Harborview Medical Center. He was 84. Charles was born on Nov. 18, 1934, to Omar and Grace Herzog in Scrambler, Minnesota. Charles spent part of his childhood in Pelican Rapids before the family moved to Hoquiam, Washington. It was in Hoquiam that he graduated high school and went on to attend Grays Harbor College for Football. In December of 1954, Charles joined the United States Navy. He proudly served four years on the U.S.S. Hornet and honorable discharged on Dec. 18, 1958. Shortly after he married Shirley Ann Herzog on July 3, 1960, in Sequim, Washington. She supported Charles throughout his career at Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill all the way through his retirement in 1994. Charles enjoyed golfing at Oakridge Golf Course, hunting in the Olympic Peninsula, and fishing in the local rivers. He loved sports and stayed actively involved in the Montesano Little League. He coached Little League to Babe Ruth and served as President for some time. Charles is survived by his wife Shirley Herzog of Montesano; son John Herzog of Montesano; daughters Cheri Schrible of Montesano, and Carole Falk of Hemmit, California; sisters Marge Engebretson of Pelican Rapids and Deloris Peterson of Fargo, North Dakota; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Omar and Grace Herzog and siblings Keogh Herzog, Clinton Herzog, Kenneth Herzog, T.J. Ethel R. Evensen Ethel Rose Evensen, 90, passed away April 12, 2019, in Aberdeen, Washington. Ethel was born March 11, 1929, in Prosser, Washington, to parents John and Elizabeth Throckmorton. Ethel was the youngest of nine children. Her family moved to Aberdeen, Washington, when Ethel was a sophomore in high school, which is where she met and later married her high school sweetheart, Delmar Evensen. Del and Ethel would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on May 14, 2019. Del and Ethel had three children: Patty, Pam and Dale. Ethel worked as a fresh berry sorter for Ocean Spray for many years. After that, she worked for various convenience stores, the bakery at Stewart’s Shoprite and enjoyed working as a senior companion. Ethel loved to spend time with her family. She gladly welcomed all visitors with a cup of coffee and a smile. Her grandkids were often included in her home décor and redecorating schemes. Del, of course, had to hang the pictures… again. The grand and great-grandkids always knew there was a treat in the freezer and a backyard to explore. Ethel loved Del’s garden. He planted her favorite flowers in all of her favorite colors. They would sit together for hours outside enjoying the beautiful space he created in their family home in Cosmopolis, Washington. Ethel is survived by her husband Del, sister Irma, daughter Patty and son-in-law Jim, and son Dale and daughter-in-law Julie. Ethel had 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings, daughter, Pamela Miller, and great-granddaughter Verity Evensen. Ethel was loved. A service was held on Sunday, April 28, at Light and Life Church in Hoquiam, with a potluck that followed.

Edward “Ed” Langer Edward “Ed” Langer died Tuesday, April 16, 2019, in Lacey, Washington; he was 83. He was born Oct. 16, 1935, to Edward and Caroline (Muri) Langer in Raymond, Washington. Ed graduated from Valley High School in 1954 and went on to get an associates degree from Grays Harbor College. Throughout Ed’s life he worked as an installer for Western Electric, as a millworker for Weyerhaeuser and retired from Hoquiam Plywood. He was an avid elk and deer hunter and steelhead fisherman. Ed also was a tree farmer, a member of the Washington State Farm Forestry Association, a Lewis Pacific Swiss Society member, a member of the Marine Corps Association, member of the Willapa Harbor Gun Club, a lifetime member of the NRA, and a Marine Corp Veteran from the Korean War era. Surviving Ed are his sister Carolyn Smaciarz of Menlo, his brother Jerry Langer of Menlo, his nephews Jeff (Gina) Langer of Menlo, Mike (Kelli) Langer of Rochester, Terry (Lana) Smaciarz of Menlo, and his nieces Jonna (Mike) Hliboki of Hoquiam, and Jeri (Josh) Christen of Raymond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Willapa Valley School Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2019, at the Fern Hill Cemetery in Menlo. Services are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond, Washington.

Daniel George Papp Sr. — “Sonbones” — passed away on March 31, 2019. Dan was born on Feb. 6, 1940, to Violet Hudson and Daniel Papp. He was the oldest of eight children. He was a proud member of the Quinault Indian Nation and proud of his Alaska native heritage. Dan was raised in Taholah, Washington, graduating from Moclips High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy. Dan married Catherine Masten, residing together in California after he served his time in the Navy, so he could attend electronics school. Dan and Catherine returned home to Taholah with two sons, with their third son joining their family soon after. Dan was employed in the local saw mills and then worked for the Quinault Indian Nation, retiring in 1996 as the Clinic Facility Manager for the Roger Saux Health Clinic. He then worked at the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino
as a dealer, retiring a second time, so he could spend time watching his granddaughter play basketball. Dan loved sports and loved to coach. He coached middle school basketball in Taholah. He was proud to be able to help coach all three of his sons, especially when his sons played together at North Beach High School. When he was no longer coaching or helping to coach, he could be found working with the local kids, teaching them the jump shot. After his sons were out of high school, he would often attend sporting events to watch his granddaughters, nieces, nephews and local youth play. Dan also loved golf, golfing with his boys since they were young and up until he could no longer golf. As long as can be remembered, Dan could be found on the local golf courses or traveling the tribal golf tournament circuit. Dan also enjoyed plunking at Chow Chow, smoking
and sharing the fish that he caught. Dan will be remembered for his infectious laugh. He had a great sense of humor and you always knew by his laugh, when he was in the room. He will also be remembered for his generosity. For holidays or special occasions, Dan would go above and beyond to show his love through his gift giving. Dan is survived by his sons Daniel Papp Jr. and Nelson (Mary) Papp, daughter-in-law Karen Papp; his grandchildren Tashea Papp, Krissa
Berys, Kamimi Papp, David Papp, Jeremy and Samuel Brougher; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Dolly Papp, Judith Ann Edwards, his brother Joseph Kintanar, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his companion, Loretta Case. He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Catherine Papp, sons Kevin, Gary, Larry and David Papp, his great grandson Messiah Berys, his sisters Marjorie Valdillez and Candace Kintanar, and his brothers Alfred Basa and Gary Kintanar. Per his wishes, Dan has been cremated and will be placed with his wife and sons at Sunset Cemetery. He also asked that family and friends have a dinner to share memories. A dinner was held on April 10, 2019, at the Community Center in Taholah, Washington. The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.
Katy E. Blake Nov. 8, 1944 – April 9, 2019 In spite of heroic efforts by medical teams in Hoquiam, Aberdeen and Tacoma, our beloved Katy Blake, 74, passed away on April 9, 2019, of natural causes. Born Kathleen Ellin Blake on Nov. 8, 1944, in Seattle, she was the daughter of James H. Blake, Sr. and Molly (Illa May) Gilliland. Katy moved to Grays Harbor in the 1980s, settling in Copalis Beach and Hoquiam. She wrote the following as part of her first writing assignment for
The North Coast News in 1992: “After a lifetime as a gypsy, always moving, always being the new kid on the block, I settled here at the beach. I love living here and because I’ve lived so many other places, I realize what we have here and how valuable it is to all of us.” She was an avid gardener and talented decorator, beautifying every home she lived in. In recent years Katy enjoyed volunteering at the Hoquiam Timberland Library, one of her very favorite
places. She loved books and often spoke about the
wonderful Grays Harbor library system. She is survived by her son and daughterin-law, Mark and Angie Walther of Mint Hill, North Carolina; son Greg Walther, also of Mint Hill; sister Teresa White of Spokane; brother James H. Blake, Jr. of Hoquiam; sister Regan Harrington of San Francisco; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family will hold a private memorial at a date and location to be determined.

John Harley Purdy, age 79, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2019, at the Community Home Health and Hospice center in Vancouver, Washington. He was born on April 25, 1939, to John and Sigrid (Lindquist) Purdy in Omak, Washington. He was the youngest of five children. John was a graduate of Hoquiam High School in 1958. After graduating, he served in the Army Reserve for a short time. From 1964 to 1982 he was married to Beverly June Perry, and together they shared three children and two step-children. John spent much of his adult life hauling logs to provide for his family, which was one of his strongest passions in life. Driving log truck was his main topic of conversation, even to the very end. Other things John enjoyed were camping, motor cycle riding, four-wheeling, and shooting guns. Later in his life, John shared a special relationship for many years with Brenda Quinn. As he was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia, and John struggled with the activities of daily living, Brenda always made sure every aspect of his life was taken care of. John is survived by his two sons, John Jr. (Carol), Gary (Tina); one daughter, Cindy Busch (Scott); one stepson, Steve (Lisa) Perry; five grandchildren, Susan Purdy, Brandy Purdy, David Busch, Tyler Busch, and Vance Busch; several nieces and a nephew. There will be a celebration of life announced later.
Dale Lynn Brown, 69, Cosmopolis resident and former RN at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, died Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at her home in Cosi. Dale was born in Stockton, California, to Allen Mack and Mildred Marion (Myers) Davis on Oct. 22, 1949. She grew up in Utah and Nevada and came to the Harbor in March of 1963. She graduated from Aberdeen’s Weatherwax High School in 1968. Dale married Donald Brown on April 26, 1968. He passed away on June 25, 2003. She went to DeWitts Beauty School and then to Grays Harbor Community College, where she graduated with her RN. Later in life she attended Phoenix College and received her BA and then master’s of nursing in 2008. Dale worked as a “Candy Striper” at St. Joseph Hospital in North Aberdeen. She also waitressed at Spotlight on Simpson and the A&W until she graduated from Grays Harbor College. She started her nursing career at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, then to St. Peter’s in Olympia and later to Grays Harbor Community. She specialized in cardiac and trauma cases. She retired in 2010. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-Day Saints; Christian Women’s Club; Fiber Guild; sewing, quilting and needle work groups; Corvette Club, Midnight Cruisers Car Club and various Bible Study Groups. Dale enjoyed gardening, horseback riding, skydiving, scuba diving, belly dancing, crochet and knitting, racing cars, bowling, tennis, playing cards and games. Dale is survived by two sons: Shane Brown of Deming, New Mexico and Sean Brown of Aberdeen; two daughters: Marnie Hagadorn of Aberdeen and Heather K. Brown of Hayfork, California; two brothers: David Mack Davis of Kodiak, Alaska and Brian Aschim of Sequim, Washington; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter Kirah Lynn Brown, a brother Neil Davis and three sisters: Corey, Allene and Susie. There was a celebration of Dale’s life on April 4, at Noon at Central Park Baptist Church. She will be inurned in a private service at Forest Hill Cemetery, Cosi. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Washington.
Ronald Eugene Castleberry passed on March 24, 2019, at home. Ron was born Aug. 23, 1936, in Osawatomie, Kansas, to Patty White and Raymond E. Castleberry. Ron grew up in and out of orphanages and at the age of 18 joined the Navy from 1954-57, where he served on a destroyer during the Korean War. He travelled the United States where he tells stories of sleeping in jails and eating donuts with police. He met the love of his life, Verene, and they eloped and married Jan. 23, 1959, in San Francisco. They moved to Washington in 1970. Ron owned the Simpson Shell station in Hoquiam in the early 1970s and continued in the auto industry for his career. Ron’s heart and soul was his family and biker family. He loved working on motorcycles he had through the decades and being with his biker family. He travelled with them all over; to include going to Sturgess on its 50th anniversary, road trips to Montana, North Cascades and Olympic Peninsula. He loved the biking road trips and camping with his wife at his side. Ron was fiercely loyal and had a deep love for his family and friends. At 82 years of age, he was still planning a ride for this summer. Rons’s wife Verene of 60 years passed away two months ago. They are now together again. Ron is survived by his children, Nick (Dori) Castleberry, Penny (Bradley) Castleberry-Taylor; grandchildren, Cierra (Tanner) Martin, Braden Castleberry-Taylor, Michael Messier; great-grandchildren; Kinzley and Kylan and brother Lee (Judy) Castleberry. A sister, Bev Quimby preceded him in death. A celebration of life was held for Ron and Verene Castleberry on April 20, 2019, at the Aberdeen Elks on Boone Street in Aberdeen.
Warren Lemmon Warren Lemmon died on Tuesday, April 16, 2019. He was involved in the wood trade all his life, starting as a logger in Washington and Idaho. He is survived by his mother Donna Gregoroff; two sons Johnathon Lemmon and Aaron Lemmon; one daughter Rachael Fielding; 10 grandkids; brother Wayne Lemmon; three sisters Julie Beerbower, Corinna Ritchie and Lisa Hiles and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother Michael Bubnick. He will be missed. A memorial will be planned at a later date.
Tracy W. Colard Tracy Colard, at the age of 68, passed away on March 20, 2019, in McCleary, Washington. He will be greatly missed by his wife Sue Colard; his children, Kevin, Kelly and Katie and his grandkids. He was loved dearly by his family, friends and community. A celebration of his life was held Saturday, April 6, at the McCleary VFW Hall.

James W. Neiworth James William Neiworth, 83, of Aberdeen passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. James was born Nov. 6, 1935, in Hoquiam to Henry and Helen Neiworth. In elementary school, James attended St. Mary’s in Hoquiam and served as an altar boy, eventually becoming Knight of the Altar. He attended Hoquiam High School, where he was a stand-out basketball player and graduated in 1954. After graduation he worked in Alaska because of a mill strike on the Harbor. He worked as a longshoreman and at the Ketchikan pulp mill. Once he was drafted, he served stateside in the Army until 1958. After his discharge he worked at Grays Harbor Veneer, where he met Lorna. The two were wed Feb. 7, 1959. They were married for 60
years. During their marriage he worked for Grays Harbor Plywood, which eventually became Evans Products. He became Quality Control for the mill, and he travelled to many states and Canada demonstrating how best to use the mill’s products and how to improve the quality of plywood production. He loved the outdoors, especially the Olympic Peninsula. He hunted, fished, dug clams, hiked and camped all over the
Peninsula and Alaska. Each year the Neiworth family would gather at Kalaloch for a reunion. One of the things he loved most was hiking in the Hoh Rainforest, and he especially loved the Spruce Trail. At home, James enjoyed tending to the yard, taking care of the house and woodworking. He made several heirloom pieces of furniture for his family, including a cradle for his first granddaughter, Emma. He deeply loved to play Santa Claus for all his grandchildren. James also relished listening to music and reading historical fiction. Bob Dylan was his favorite singer-songwriter, and he enjoyed reading novels that captured the history and spirit of the West. During his retirement, James and Lorna travelled in the United States and Europe. The visited many significant historic sites and parks. They
Gerald G. Gibbs drove to Alaska together, and they visited many countries in Eastern Europe. He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen. He was a member Knights of Columbus, where he attained the 4th degree and served as Grand Knight. He also worked with the Legion of Mary, with feed the hungry, and as a eucharistic minister. He is survived by his wife, Lorna, his three daughters, Latrissa, Julie and Angela, one son, James Joseph and a brother, Rick. Those that preceded him in death include his mother, father, three brothers, Don, Ken and George, and one sister, Patricia. Gerald Gordon Gibbs, 93 years of age, died on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at Riverside Place in Hoquiam, Washington. He was born in Port Angeles, Washington, on Dec. 17, 1925, to Jenny Thomas Gibbs and Sydney Gibbs. He grew up in Port Angeles and graduated from Port Angeles High School. Gerald enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1943 and while stationed in Aberdeen he met his future wife, Catherine Siese. They were married on Jan. 10, 1945, and had three children, Gordon, Tom and Dolores. They also raised two nieces, Dorothy and Cathy. During his tenure in WWII he was a Seaman First Class on the USS General C. H. Muir in the Philippine Sea. Following World War II, Gerald returned to the Harbor, where he worked in the logging/mill industry before enrolling in and graduating from St. Martin College in Olympia in 1954. Gerald worked and retired from the State of Washington in 1977. Following retirement he and Catherine relocated to Naselle, Washington, where he resided until 2016 when he returned to the Harbor for the remainder of his life. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, brother and three sisters, his wife, Catherine, and son, Tom. He is survived by his son, Gordon (Sue), daughter Dolores, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Aberdeen with reception following. Internment took place next to his wife the following day at at Peaceful Hill Cemetery in Naselle. Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam. Beloved husband, father, brother and proud United States Navy veteran Reginald Irwin Sandberg passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at his home in Malone, Washington. He was 74. Reginald was born on Sept. 29, 1944, to Ernest and Elsie (Leavitt) Sandberg in Dover, Maine. Reginald was raised and lived in Abbot Village, Maine, until his enlistment in the Navy on Feb. 23, 1965. He then spent his years on the USS Northampton, serving in Vietnam and earning various medals. Reginald married Janet Sandberg in Centralia, Washington, on Feb. 13, 1986, and moved back to Maine in 1990, and years later came back to Grays Harbor and settled in Malone. Together they attended the Assembly of God Church, spent time with their family and recently celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary. While living in Maine, Reginald started using his woodworking skills and jolly personality to play Santa Claus for children during the holiday. He continued when he moved to the Pacific Northwest and was happy to hear that his Maine program is still going strong. Reginald is survived by his wife Janet Sandberg of Malone; sons Timothy Sandberg (Serena) of Elma, Reginald E. Sandberg of Montesano and Kevin Sandberg (Deaun) of Montesano; brother Sammy Goodrich of Abbot, Maine; sisters Clarice Foss of Herman, Maine, and Cindy Fotier of Abbot Village, Maine; stepsons Bill White, Ronald White, Michael White, Paul White and Joe White; two grandsons, Ryan Sandberg and Branden Sandberg; and 11 step-grandchildren. Belinda Kay Crow, age 64, a resident of Aberdeen, went to be with her Lord, parents and loved ones on April 9, 2019, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. Kay was born on Nov. 17, 1954, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to Homer and Belinda Joyce (Barber) Fisher. On April 3, 1983, she and Preston Crow were married in Cedar Creek, North Carolina, then moved to Aberdeen. She and Preston were very active in churches where they lived. As a ministry to the church, Kay would organize dinners for up to 200 people. In the early 1980s she worked a short time at Grays Harbor Community Hospital as a purchasing supply manager. She was proficient in signing and worked at McDermott Elementary School with special needs students. But most of all, she enjoyed being home. She and Preston owned and operated Harbor Dryer Vent & Gutter Cleaning. She took great pride in the clerical side of the business, while Preston took care of operations. Surviving relatives include her husband Preston of the family home in Aberdeen; two brothers and their wives, Homer Phillip and Darlene Fisher and John Hydie and Mary Fisher; several in-laws in Washington state; numerous nieces and nephews and many many friends. A celebration of life service was held Monday, April 15, 2019, at the Grays Harbor Four Square Church in Aberdeen. A potluck dinner followed. Robert Lund, friend and father, passed away March 6, 2019, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Robert Herbert Lund was born May 11, 1953, to Bonnie and Kingsley Lund. He had three siblings — Debbie, Rick and Janet — and was raised in Tacoma, Washington. Bob was a tree trimmer by trade and thrived in hard work until injuries slowed him down. He was a loyal friend to many. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and Recovery Riders motorcycle club and the 12-step recovery fellowship. He is survived by his children David, Shawntae and Imani; his sister Janet and brother-in-law Mike; granddaughters Mariah and Noel; and many people who will always miss him. A celebration of life was held April 6, 2019, at the Aberdeen Alano Club.

Betty Norquist Betty Norquist met the Lord on March 22, 2019, at the Yuma Regional Medical Center, Yuma, Arizona. Yuma was her and her husband of 52 years, Harry Norquist’s, favorite place to enjoy the sun and participate in many activities. She is survived by five children and four step-children; Cynthia Crisp, Herb Norquist, Kathy Norquist, Ron Norquist, Kimberly Goodreau, Doug Norquist, Peggy Shinn, Jo Cole and Mari Corrigan. There was a celebration of life at the Montesano Presbyterian Church in Montesano on April 27. A reception followed. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society or the Montesano Presbyterian Church.
