Duck Derby May 2019
MEET THE 2019 TOP DUCK
Leslie English
The Olympic Medical Center Foundation stages six fundraising events a year — the Red, Set, Go Heart Luncheon, the Sonny Sixkiller Golf Tournament, Harvest of Hope, Hog Wild, Festival of Trees and, of course, the Duck Derby. It takes over 1,000 volunteers to stage them, and only one person sells at all six — this year’s Top Duck Award winner, Leslie English. It all began with ducks, when her cousin recruited her to sell in 2007. Despite the fact that she has only sold for 12 years, and not for 29 like many other sales persons, she is one of the top duck salespersons of all time, with 8,305 to her credit. Most volunteers don’t like to ask people for money, but English doesn’t mind asking for Olympic Medical Center at all. “They saved my life twice — I had cancer in 2007 and pneumonia in 2017. The first time I was in the hospital for 10 days,” English said. TOP DUCK, continued on page 3

BUB & ALICE OLSEN TOP DUCK WINNERS
Top Duck Award
The Bub and Alice Olsen Top Duck Award was created to honor the Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby’s stars — those special volunteers who go far out of their way to help make Olympic Medical Center Foundation events succeed. The award is named for the original star volunteers, Bub and Alice Olsen. A longtime Olympic Medical Center Foundation board member, Bub sold ducks inside Swain’s General Store for 21 years until his death in 2010. He was one of the all-time top duck salesmen, with more than 15,000 ducks sold during nearly two decades as team captain of the Quacker Backers. His wife, Alice, also was deeply dedicated to the Olympic Medical Center Foundation cause. On race day each year, together they hosted the Very Important Duck Party, a tradition that continues today and is also named in their honor. Duck Derby season at the Olsen’s was a family affair — most of the children and grandchildren are involved in one way or another, including daughter, Sandy Sinnes, who is a past president of Olympic Medical Center Foundation. The Bub & Alice Olsen Top Duck Award plaque with the annual winners listed is displayed at the OMC Foundation office.

The Bub and Alice Olsen Top Duck Award honors the behind-the-scenes volunteers who make Olympic Medical Center Foundation events, like the Duck Derby, a success each year.

“Both times I received unbelievable care. I found out that many of my caregivers came from all over the country to be here. When I asked them why, they told me it was for the quality of life, including my surgeon Dr. Charles Bundy. It made me proud to be from here.” English volunteered for events many years prior to the Duck Derby, but decided to get more involved after her daughter Alexandria graduated from high school. “My husband and I decided that we had the time and that it was time to give back to the community.” For the Foundation, that meant not only selling ducks, but also selling raffle tickets at all Foundation events with her husband Monte. “He’s a tremendous help to me. When he’s around, I don’t have to worry about anything except selling,” English said. Because of her participation, the Foundation has significantly grown its raffle ticket sales, because Leslie likes to sell. “I really like to upsell. I learned that when I worked at the Bushwhacker Restaurant. “The price for raffle tickets is one for $10, three for $20 and an arm’s length for $40. “When someone tells me that they want to purchase three, I counter with, ‘seriously?’ Look how many more tickets you get when you purchase an arm’s length — you’ll have a better chance to win.” She plans to volunteer for many years for the OMC Foundation, “I enjoy giving back to the community,” she said. “It’s an inspiration to me to see all the volunteers that have made this hospital one of the top-notch hospitals in the state.”

JAMESTOWN S’KLALLAM TRIBE CONTINUES SPONSORSHIP OF DUCK DERBY
The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe has again agreed to continue to sponsor the Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby and other Olympic Medical Center Foundation events during the next few years. “We appreciate the opportunity to help make a difference in our community,” said W. Ron Allen, Jamestown S’Klallam tribal chairman. “We have committed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the foundation over the past 15-plus years, and since our health clinic in Sequim works closely with Olympic Medical Center, we know firsthand what a difference the foundation’s fundraising has done for OMC operations. “We are extremely impressed with the leadership and team addressing the quality of health care in our
community. We truly believe that the foundation makes a difference.” Olympic Medical Center Foundation executive director Bruce Skinner said, “Because of the tribe’s and other sponsorship, we are able to give 100 percent of monies that are donated to us at our events to Olympic Medical Center.” The tribe is joined by its business interests, including 7 Cedars Casino, The Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course and the Longhouse Deli. The tribe will continue to be the title sponsor of the “Red, Set, Go!” Heart Luncheon and to be involved in all other foundation fundraising events, including the Sonny Sixkiller Husky Legends Golf Tournament, Hog Wild, Harvest of Hope and Festival of Trees.

THE KID’S PAVILION
Always an attraction on Race Day It will be a family affair again this year at the 30th Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby, and everyone is invited to partake in the festivities surrounding the main event, especially the kids. Each year the Kid’s Pavilion becomes an entertaining place for children in the community, providing them with arts-and-crafts supplies and a location on race day where they can meet the Happy Tymers Clown Group, decorate their own duck, play games, win prizes or meet the big duck. The Kid’s Pavilion opens at noon with fun for children of all ages. Stephanie Casillas is the Kid’s Pavilion
executive director this year and is very excited about the activities that are planned, including the popular Duck Putt game and Ducky Toss. “This is a really great event, and the kids always have fun,” Casillas said. To make this year’s derby the best yet, organizers invite children to come out with their parents to the events on race day at Lincoln Park. “The Duck Derby is not only a chance to give back to our community in the most important way, but it is also a chance for families to enjoy some great entertainment and family-friendly activities,” Casillas said.

Very Important Ducks The Bub and Alice Olsen VID (Very Important Duck) Race always gets the crowd revved up for the main event. It allows businesses and individuals from Sequim, Port Angeles, Forks and even Seattle to participate to help make this event the largest in Duck Derby history. Matt Bailey, of Bailey Signs & Graphics, emblazons the VID ducks with their names or logos. They have become very popular and make a great memento of each year’s race. For $300, VID supporters receive a souvenir duck used in the VID race, plus 60 ducks in the main race, invitations to a “Quackers and Cheese” catered race-day party and a special parking pass. Not only do the VID purchasers help contribute to the overall well-being of the community by supporting Olympic Medical Center and the other charities involved, but they also have an opportunity to join in the festivities on race day. Ask your local duck seller about becoming a Very Important Duck! The VID race will be held at 1:30 p.m. this year, a half-hour before the main Duck Derby race. The top three finishers of the VID race will receive $600, $300 or $150 cash prizes. The list (at right) reflects VIDs sold as of May 6.
