estination Vashon is our annual tribute to this place we call home — a chance to consider why some 11,000 people put up with ferry lines, scant services and high gas prices to live on an island in Puget Sound. Peruse these pages, and it’s easy to see why. In part, it’s the sheer beauty of the place. Country roads that give rise to sweeping vistas. Expansive beaches dotted with driftwood. A patchwork of pastures and woods, barns and cottages that suggests a simpler time. In part, it’s the community. What happens when you take 11,000 people and put them on an island in the maritime Northwest, where the winter nights are long? A lot, it turns out. Opera, art, theater, music, home-grown comedy, sophisticated lectures, book readings, wine tastings and community gatherings of every stripe. In this issue of Destination Vashon, we try to give a feel for what awaits you on this small island in the sound — from hikes and beachcombing, to arts events and the weekly Farmers Market. Drink it in. The island awaits you.

Information While exploring Vashon, there are a few things you should keep in mind — despite its proximity to Seattle, Vashon truly is a world apart. For example, the two grocery stores close early — Thriftway at 9 p.m. and Vashon Market IGA at 10 p.m. — and the island’s bus service is limited, particularly on Sundays. Here are a few other helpful bits of information:

Vashon Island Fire & Rescue 10020 SW Bank Rd (206) 463-2405 | Emergency: 911 VIFR handles major emergencies on the island and works with the ferries and local medical helicopters to transport people when needed.

King County Sheriff’s Office 10011 SW Bank Rd. (206) 477-6655 | Emergency: 911 The sheriff’s station is located at King County’s Rural Services Center on Bank Road, across from the fire station.

Medical Clinics Vashon’s primary health clinic is operated by Neighborcare Health and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The clinic can be reached by calling (206) 463-3671. There are also a few independently owned offices. Reach Vashon Natural Medicine at (206) 463-4778 and Fern Cove Natural Medicine at (206) 693-4143. There are no 24-hour clinics or urgent care facilities.

10 2019-2020 DESTINATION VASHON

Post Offices Vashon has two. The downtown office is located on SW 178th Street, near the Vashon Market IGA. Another is in Burton on Vashon Highway and has limited hours.

Public Transportation King County operates bus service on Vashon seven days a week, but the routes and service are limited. See King County Metro online for information.

Take a ferry

Kent Phelan Photo

Getting there is half the journey, right? We all know “getting there” for Vashon means boarding a ferry and crossing Puget Sound — a beautiful trip no matter the season. Some visitors come to the island on the passenger-only ferry, which connects Vashon to downtown Seattle. Relax and enjoy the ride! The passenger ferries — for people, not cars — are operated by King County. Passengers can use an ORCA pass or buy a ticket at a kiosk on the Seattle waterfront or on the Vashon dock. For more information, see King County Water Taxi online. Other visitors travel to the island via Washington State Ferries from West Seattle, Tacoma and Southworth. Those trips are beautiful as well, but some insider tips are useful. First and foremost, if coming by car, it’s helpful to have pre-purchased and printed your tickets, which you can do online at wsdot. wa.gov/ferries/wave2go. In West Seattle, the ferry line gets long enough to back up on Fauntleroy Way. Be sure to take your spot at the back of the line. Ferry service has been the topic of endless discussion for islanders the last few years, as the state ferry system has tried out different approaches, new schedules and system improvements. Nowadays, nothing causes more angst than people who try to jump ahead in the queue. Best practice: Bring a book, a musical instrument or a friend and be patient. For more information about ferry schedules and fares, see wsdot.wa.gov/ferries. People who come without vehicles may wish to explore the island via bus. It’s helpful to know service is limited and there are few designated stops. If you see a bus and want to get on, just flag it down. The same is true for getting off; the bus driver will let you off anywhere along the route. For more information about bus service, including schedule and fares, see King County Metro online. And welcome to the island. It’s worth the trip.

Sometimes my clients are ready to make a move, but are unsure about how to make it happen. I will show you how the use of the sale of your existing home contingency can work in your purchase transaction. My track record shows that I also get it done -- often with same day closings. lot has changed on Vashon over the years. Longtime islanders talk about the days when Tramp Harbor and Tahlequah both had active small-town groceries. We all hear stories of when the mosquito fleet ferry system ran around the island. Early on, we even had a women’s college in Burton. But now, the island is down to three and a half community centers. Vashon town cannot be missed when you come from either the north- or south-end ferries. A special treat in spring and summer is our Farmers Market, right in the middle of town. One of the biggest hits for visitors is The Hardware Store Restaurant, a local favorite. Or, get a reservation in advance for May Kitchen + Bar across the street, which draws frequent visitors from off island. Another local favorite is Giraffe, where you can buy “fair trade and ethically sourced” items from around the world. Center is host to the Vashon Center for the Arts and the longtime Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie. Plan on stopping here and sitting on the front porch, watching the world go by. Summertime tip: The ice cream store (Zuzu’s) in back is excellent. Burton is the southernmost town center and includes the

often-photographed Quartermaster Yacht Club, as well as Jensen Point, a waterfront park with kayaks for rent. Don’t forget to stop at the Burton Coffee Stand and get to know the locals, or visit the historic Harbor Mercantile across the street. In Dockton, the stores are gone — making it the aforementioned half center — but the community is still an important anchor on Vashon. Dockton boasts the fabulous local park as well as plenty of water views. And on your way, you can visit the Greenside Grill at the Vashon Golf & Swim Club.

such competitions in the nation to have achieved its current level of recognition and attendance. The Vashon Sheepdog Classic started a decade ago with just 1,500 attending, not including dogs and sheep and a few barbecue pits. Two years ago, when renowned animal behavior expert Temple Grandin visited, the crowd swelled to 10,000. So, last year, organizers chose to limit attendance to 8,000 using advanced ticketing. “We wanted to cap attendance so we could maintain that sense of being transported to a different time and place; we want to retain the intimacy and magic of the place,” founder and proprietor of Mighty Mutt Dog Training, Maggi McClure said. That time and place looks a lot like a Celtic hamlet complete with local cuisine, a spirits tent, a fiber arts village and other artisan crafts. All this surrounds the most highly attended herding event on the West Coast. The mission of these extremely well trained dogs is, at the signal from the handler, to run to the top of the field, gather the sheep and move them in a quiet workman-like manner through a series of tasks that could be encountered on the farm. Watching them in their work is mesmerizing, and each dog has a personal “style.” The fun starts at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6, with the “nursery” event, where pups under 2 years old test their abilities as well as their trainers’ patience in what is sometimes a comedy of canine blunders. The skill levels increase from there throughout the weekend. Vendors open for business Friday morning as the excitement quietly builds. Bagpipers herald the entrance of fresh sheep every afternoon, and sheep shearing demonstrations follow. Interspersed throughout the weekend are “Gray Muzzle” competitors. Gray Muzzle is a special class developed by the organizers for the older dogs. It is a “class within a class” for all dogs age 9 and above who are participating in the highly competitive “Open Class.” It’s one way the event honors the senior dogs, many of whom go into competitive retirement after the event. It’s a wonderful ceremonial send-off.

Strawberry Festival: July 19-21

T

he island’s largest celebration comes each July, when the Chamber of Commerce puts on the Strawberry Festival. More than 30,000 people attend the three-day affair, a classic community celebration with parades, booths, a beer garden and activities for kids. Vashon’s festival is homegrown — it boasts performances by island musicians and locally made arts and crafts, allowing the spirit of Vashon to shine. The festival this year will be held July 20 to 22, when the main road through town will be given over to the gala, with a variety of retailers, nonprofits and food vendors setting up shop. One of the most anticipated festival events is the Grand Parade, which will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21. The Classic Car Parade, which also draws crowds, will take place at noon Sunday, July 22. Highlights this year will include favorites from years past — street dances, the Bill Burby Fun Run, local artists’ work available for purchase, plenty of kids’ activities and music by local performers at numerous outdoor stages. A new addition to the festivities this year will be an aerial show by the acclaimed UMO Ensemble. As in years past, there will be shuttle service from both the north-end and south-end ferry docks for those who want to leave their cars behind. For those visiting Vashon during the Strawberry Festival, check out vashonchamber.com for more information. Also pick up a copy of The Beachcomber’s annual Strawberry Festival guide, which publishes just before the festival. Shane Eitner Photo

Celebrate all the seasons, Vashon style Vashon has celebrations throughout the year to mark every season and holiday — community-wide affairs that showcase the island’s creativity and fun-loving spirit. While the biggest bash is the Strawberry Festival in July, smaller celebrations occur throughout the year. The Fourth of July brings the first of the summer celebrations, when an impressive fireworks show sponsored by islanders draws hundreds to the shores of Quartermaster Harbor. Just two days later, it is time for the Low Tide Celebration, a favorite event among locals. This event offers a chance to see sea life during one of the lowest tides of the

year. This year it is slated for Sunday, July 6. See page 27 for more information. Halloween is a spirited time on Vashon, when the town center closes to cars, and both kids and adults — dressed in creative and sometimes extravagant costumes — hit the streets. Merchants hand out candy, and there’s a haunted house or two to explore. The island celebrates the winter holidays the first weekend in December. The event includes a Santa-led parade and tree lighting, music, roasted chestnuts and other holiday favorites. Merchants in town stay open late for holiday shopping and drawings for prizes. That time of year also

includes holiday-themed performances, the holiday Art Studio Tour and a gingerbread house contest in downtown Vashon. Also in winter, a different kind of celebration takes place on the occasions Fisher Pond freezes over. Then, islanders who have collected countless ice skates share them with those who flock to the pond. The skaters spread out across the ice, experiencing the pond in a whole new way. As the gray skies of winter give way to spring, island children and their parents enjoy Spring Fling at Ober Park. The Easter Bunny visits with children, which is a highlight for many, along with an egg hunt, crafts and prizes.

Biking on Vashon By Chris Austin

Ask any geologist and they will tell you our island’s topography was formed by retreating ice-age glaciers. Ask any cyclist and they will tell you the island was formed when Seattle and Tacoma pushed their really steep hills into the Puget Sound. Before any pedalers are scared away, be assured there are opportunities to explore this wonderful place for couch potatoes, average riders and Tour de France wannabes. Let’s go over the good, the bad and the blackberries. The good. As a rural setting, we have low-density traffic. This provides for a quiet ride without the background hum of city life. Drivers on the island are used to sharing the road and are generally aware and respectful. Although blowing through our handful of fourway stops won’t win you any fans, that’s no different than in the rest of the world. Nasty, day-long headwinds are mitigated by tall trees, winding roads and the hills themselves. The Bad. “Bad” is too strong a word. “Things to plan for” makes more sense. Lack of amenities is a big one. There are only two places to buy energy bars and such on the island — the town of Vashon and Burton. Life is going to stink if your legs start shaking and you have run out of carbs to consume. The hills will mock you as you “pedal squares” all the way home. Few places to do your business. Outside of the areas of commerce, there are a few restrooms scattered around the island. Generally, they

are located close to parks. They are chemical toilets — you’ve been warned. The blackberries. While they make a fun roadside treat in late summer, watch out for their ever-growing vines as they migrate into the road and trail. One good swipe will mar a perfectly toned calf muscle or an expensive cycling jersey. Now for some nuts and bolts on riding here. The cheapest way for you and your bike to get here is as a walk-on passenger on the ferry. Your bike is $1 extra. After disembarking, consider waiting 10 minutes for the cars to scatter for a more relaxing ride. You can choose to go either left or right at the end of each dock. Both paths meet again a mile or so away, so which one do you take? In a nutshell: left hard, right harder. We have two full-service bike shops staffed with friendly, knowledgeable people. Both are in downtown Vashon. However, you can buy common tubes, patch kits and use a community pump 4 ½ miles south at the Burton Coffee Shop. Before coming to visit, you may want to check out BicycleClimbs. com. There you will find maps and lists of our most onerous climbs. Use them to find hills to include or avoid on your ride. For the knobby tire folks. Mountain bike fun can be had at Island Center Forest and Dockton Forest. Within Dockton Forest. there is an area dedicated to mountain biking with ramps, jumps and the like. Now for the couch potatoes. The island offers a robust e-bike rental service. Get them by the hour or join an organized tour; there is no doubt, riding an e-bike will make you feel like a kid again. Visit. Pedal. Enjoy. Repeat.

ashon Pharmacy’s primary focus is to provide the highest caliber of pharV maceutical care to the residents of Vashon Island. Our five staff pharmacists are available 7 days a week with friendly and personal service including medication advice to both residents and visitors as well as medical equipment rentals. Operated by the same families for over 60 years, Vashon Pharmacy works daily to support the framework of our rural community. his pharmacy is modeled after the many small town “mom & pop” stores that we all miss from America’s historic street corners. Our friendly staff will be happy to help you find something unique from the “other side” of Vashon Pharmacy including gifts for the home, personal care products, yarn, greeting cards, photo frames and albums and so much more. The Pharmacy is also home to the Island’s largest selection of toys and games for children, as well as for souvenirs and Vashon Island sweatshirts and T-shirts. e sure to enjoy the green-space and bicycle racks built by Vashon Pharmacy just south of our building on Main Street.

Passport to Pain: One fun, tough ride By Jeff Hoyt

A

leisurely bike ride along Vashon Highway might lead one to believe that the island’s topography is gentle, rolling and benign. However, once you stray from the comfort of the island’s main artery and poke around on its countless veins and capillaries, a different sense emerges: Vashon Island is all about the hills. In September 2019, Vashon Island Rowing Club (VIRC) will celebrate the gnarliest of the island’s famous hills with the ninth annual Passport to Pain (P2P). Avid cyclists who come from the mainland for a getaway ride around Vashon and Maury Islands generally avoid dropping off the many edges of the island’s rolling, rural table-top. When P2P rolls around, however, those harrowing hills become the entire focus of the experience. Each rider chooses between the Idiot, Weasel, Weenie and Granny courses. The Idiots will climb 10,000 feet of vertical over a full 80-mile circuit of the island. The Grannies will make an 11-mile, 800-feet of vertical ride to town and back. Weasels (50 miles) and Weenies (30 miles) fall in between.

“At that point, I wasn’t sure if ‘downhill’ was in the Vashon Island vocabulary.” Promoted as a “fun” club ride, registrants sign a release and pay $100 to secure their passport, which includes the post-ride barbecue. Proceeds support the junior rowing program at VIRC and help fund new equipment. “Rowing is a great way for kids to learn about dedication, precision and teamwork in ways that test their limits – things that serious riders can appreciate,” said P2P volunteer Colby Atwood. “It’s not an inexpensive sport, but seeing some of our junior rowers go from indifferent about sports to passionate about rowing is the reason we work to build the program every year.” Billed as a “strenuous, supported ride for experienced riders only,” this year’s Passport to Pain happens on Saturday, Sept. 14. Out of consideration for our island neighbors, there is a limit on riders. To secure a passport for P2P, register at passport2pain.org.

P2P Photo

The Burma Road Devil is one of the traditions of Passport to Pain.

Every few miles, riders will cruise down to one of 20 passport-stamping stations, where dozens of zany volunteers nourish and amuse the riders with food, water and themed theatrics while also managing to help them forget about the steep return climb on which they’re about to embark. “It was positively perfect, and my overriding sense of joy exceeded my fatigue,” said islander Leslie Garrison after finishing P2P. “The ride was challenging enough but not impossible, with great food and super kind and supportive volunteers.” Riders are frequently reminded along the way of the post-ride barbecue and party back at Jensen Point, which helps keep them going while at the same time tempts them to call it a day and take a shortcut back to the beach. “I hugged the last passport stamper tight after she told me it was all downhill from there,” said Pamela Forrester of Snoqualmie. 24 2019-2020 DESTINATION VASHON

The Vashon Island Ultramarathon & Trail Run, now in its 10th year, offers runners the chance to compete in a 50k or 10-mile trail run on Saturday, June 1. The figure eight-shaped route connects previously unconnected trail systems through the island’s woods and open spaces, giving participants the opportunity to explore all the beauty that Vashon has to offer. Along the way, there will be single-track and double-track park trails, with some dirt roads, gravel driveways, grass shoulders and short sections of paved road also in the mix. Organizers say very little of the course qualifies as flat. The top finishing time from over the years for the 50k is 3:11:51 for men (2014) and 3:55:04 for women (2017). The event is organized entirely by volunteers. The cost is $55 for the 10-mile run and $85 for the 50k. To learn more about the event and register, see vashonultra.com.

The North End

Dockton Park

Owned by King County, this 23-acre park on adjoining Maury Island doesn’t have much sand, but it’s a favorite for islanders — especially teens, who say the water is the warmest around. The park has a playground, a grassy lawn, restrooms, a boat launch and a pier. It’s also the beginning of the Dockton Historic Interpretive Trail. Location: 9500 SW Dock Street.

KVI Beach This beach, named for the AM tower that provides not only a radio signal but also a roost site for bald eagles, is a top choice among locals. With an expansive, sandy shoreline and slow-moving slough, KVI is especially fun for young ones and sunbathers and is amazing at low tide. Parking is limited. Location: 20336 78th Pl SW.

At low tide, the beach in front of The Wild Mermaid Restaurant is a fun one to explore. Look for sea creatures, especially under the dock, but be respectful of neighbors. Location: Access the beach using the boat ramp on the east side of the north-end ferry dock. Watch your step.

Winghaven Park This 12-acre park on the north end of the island suggests Vashon’s grand past; it’s the site of a former waterfront estate and still boasts a crumbling balustrade. The quiet beach, located down a quarter-mile trail, offers views of Mount Rainier and sand to walk on at low tide. It’s also a great place to collect beach glass. Location: 12090 Cunliffe Road SW.

Lisabeula Park A quiet, west-facing beach, Lisabeula is the perfect spot for sunsets and picnics. It also boasts a grassy expanse for Frisbee throwing, some picnic tables and portable restrooms. Location: End of SW Lisabuela Road.

Maury Island Marine Park This 320-acre park, owned by King County, was once a gravel pit. But thanks to an ongoing restoration campaign, the park — an expanse that begins in the woods and ends at the shore — is looking increasingly natural and verdant. It’s a steep half-mile walk from the parking lot to the beach. Location: Parking lot and trail access on SW 244th Street. Jim Diers Photo

Standing watch at

Point Robinson lighthouse

T

he west coast of Washington state, particularly the peninsula-protected waters of the Puget Sound, is a mariner’s playground. From the workhorse fleet of white and green ferries to sailboats, barges and fishing trollers, vessels of every shape and size sail the waters around Vashon Island. It should come as no surprise then that the island is also home to a lighthouse, which stands watch on the easternmost point of Maury Island, as it has for more than 100 years.

With a permanent spot on the National Register of Historic Places, the Point Robinson lighthouse has a story as rich as it is long, and there is much more to this former Coast Guard station than its classically picturesque facade and stunning backdrop, which draw shutterbugs and wedding parties alike. Marine navigation aid at Point Robinson was first established with a fog signal in 1885. Two years later, a lantern was attached to a post as the first light source, and in 1915, the lighthouse was built. The best source of information on the 38-foot red-and-white beacon is Captain Joe Wubbold, known on Vashon as Captain Joe. Wubbold is a former Coast Guard captain and current president of the Keepers of Point Robinson, a group of volunteers dedi-

cated to preserving the lighthouse and the popular park where it sits. On a tour of the lighthouse, Wubbold might tell you about the barn that the U.S. Lighthouse Service initially built for the station in the hopes that those who lived there could be self-sufficient. He might also tell you about the boathouse, of which there are still some remains. But if you really want to see Wubbold light up, get him talking about the lighthouse’s original light, a Fresnel lens that still sits in the lantern room at the top of the tower. Though the Coast Guard installed a less expensive and more easily replaceable LED light there in 2008, Wubbold and the Keepers insisted that the rare Victorian-era Fresnel lens (named after the French physicist who created it) remain in its place. “These lenses are priceless. This one is made up of 61 prisms, each individually cast of leaded crystal and polished and mounted by hand,” Wubbold said. When the light was automated in 1979, there was no longer a need for the lighthouse to be manned. However, when the Vashon Park District entered into a longterm lease for the park with the Coast Guard in 1998, it added a caretaker, primarily for park security. While the lighthouse is the main draw at Point Robinson, the spot is also home to a popular park and beach managed by the Vashon Park District. The Ship’s Store sells maritime-related items, as well as kites on the annual Kite Day. Surrounded on three sides by water, the point offers breathtaking views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier. A large, grassy lawn makes a good spot for picnics, and low tide exposes a ribbon of

The Low Tide Festival draws many people to see plants and animals not typically visible on beach walks. sandy beach dotted with driftwood that draws walkers and sandcastle builders. Each summer, a Low Tide Festival is held there, giving beachgoers an excellent opportunity to learn more about the region’s marine ecology. Beach naturalists share their knowledge of plants and animals that are seldom seen. The celebration is a fun day for people of all ages, with booths, food, children’s activities and a visit from the Blue Heron Canoe, which comes from Des Moines for the occasion. This year the festival is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 6. The lowest tide, -2.3, will be at 2:24 p.m. Those who fall in love with Point

Robinson might consider staying there a few nights. Two historical Keepers’ Quarters at the point are available to rent through the park district. At the end of the day, Wubbold might also tell you that the most interesting thing about the Point Robinson lighthouse is the lack of interesting things that have happened on its watch. As busy as the Port of Tacoma has been since the late 1800s, the lighthouse’s reliability rating is high, as there have been no groundings or marine accidents in the area. “Lighthouses have been around for 3,000 years,” Wubbold said. “There’s a reason for that. This one is more than 100 years old. It’s doing its job.”

I

t’s been said that if you visit Vashon on your own, you’ll knock around, eat well and leave wondering what all the fuss is about. But if you visit Vashon with someone who lives on the island, you’ll fall in love. That is, of course, because an islander knows the best places, events and people to experience on this little chunk of paradise. Vashon Adventures’ Erin and Doug Kieper are all about experiencing Vashon, and this year they’re packaging it. VashonMaury Islands’ most popular “products” are the woods, the beaches, the waters of Quartermaster Harbor and Puget Sound, as well as locally grown food and island art … not to mention the step back in time. Vashon Adventures now offers the complete Vashon experience, including a taste of all the islands’ finest offerings in one or two days as well as all the gear and materials you need. You can choose your adventure package or customize it, from paddling and e-bike tours, to guided hikes and — new this year — opportunities to create art. Vashon Adventures and Gather Vashon, owned by Kathy Raines and Whitney Rose, have joined forces to create “Art and Adventure” packages. Choose the day(s) you want to get away and order your package. Then let Vashon Adventures and Gather Vashon do the rest. Picture this – Your blood pressure drops the moment you step onto the ferry and your entire body unwinds in that 15-minute glide to the island. You arrive to start your day slowly with a steaming cuppa and a pastry as you move into “the creative zone” at Gather Vashon, where you’ll make jewelry or create your own travel sketch journal with guidance from a Vashon artist. Lunch is prepared especially for your group. You are then shuttled to the start of your e-bike tour, paddle adventure or hike. Choose easy, moderate or challenging levels, and spend your afternoon in clean, fresh air surrounded by birdsong and the scents of forest flora. Fed and exercised, you then close your day with dinner (always dress casually) at one of the island’s restaurants. Rinse, repeat and do it a second day, or not. These days of art and adventure are perfect for a book club gathering, a family reunion, a corporate team-building event,

a wedding party bonding affair or whatever you and your group of up to eight can conjure. Vashon Adventures is all about experiencing island life on land and water. It has a large fleet of electric bikes, kayaks and paddleboards. They’re family friendly with cargo bikes and vessels for kids, dogs and other precious cargo. And, they can accommodate up to 70 people. Reservations are recommended but drop-ins are welcome at Vashon E-bike on Vashon Highway. Rent an electric bike and

return to the childhood thrill of effortless cycling. Islanders and visitors alike can sign-up to take a winery tour or a Mostly True History tour by e-bike. At Vashon Watersports on Jensen Point, kayak and paddleboard rentals are available throughout the summer. And, Vashon Adventures manages the campsites at Maury Island Marine Park in case you’re so happy you want to stay the night. Looking out for orcas Icons of the Pacific Northwest, killer whales, or orcas, are facing an uncertain future in the waters of Puget Sound. The Salish Sea’s southern resident killer whales — which regularly venture into Puget Sound and only eat certain types of salmon — were once plentiful, but were hunted nearly to extinction in the 1960s and 70s for aquariums and shows. They have struggled to come back for decades, only to face starvation now. Already officially listed as endangered, over the past five years, their numbers have gone from a high of close to 90 individuals, to a recent low of 75. With their preferred food source dwindling in part due to the damming of rivers and disruption of shorelines, efforts are under way to protect them. Time will tell if these efforts will be enough. If you come upon orcas while you are boating, give them ample space. State regulations require a minimum distance of 200 yards — the equivalent of two football fields. Fall and winter are the most likely seasons to see them in the waters around the island, and Point Robinson park typically provides the best viewing for shore-based whale watching. The Vashon Hydrophone project asks that local sightings be reported to them at 206-463-9041.

Galleries On the first Friday of every month, galleries and local shops open new art exhibits. The Gallery Cruise comes alive with artist receptions, live music performed by a host of island musicians and refreshments. It’s a time to ogle arts and crafts, check out the wares in the shops in the town center, chat with neighbors and tap your toes to upbeat songs. The festivities usually run from 6 to 9 p.m. The art walk happens year-round, rain or shine, but be sure to take advantage of the event in the summer and early fall, when it’s the most fun to roam the streets with “the art mob” in the evening light.

Vashon Theatre The island’s only movie theater is a throwback to the early days of cinema and a perfect example of keeping up with the times, all rolled into one decidedly “Vashon” experience. In the footprint of the town’s original theater, built in 1910 and burned to the ground in the mid-1940s, the current building went up in 1947 and sports a single screen, a stage, a vintage — and still working — World War II-era popcorn maker and hand-painted murals, circa 1952. As one of few remaining independent movie houses, the Vashon Theatre has frequently earned a spot on

lists of the region’s best rural theaters, offering first-run movie blockbusters, seasonal classics and a variety of live broadcasts, including the Metropolitan Opera, Bolshoi Ballet and British National Theatre productions. Adults may enjoy beer, wine or hard cider at evening shows, and everyone can take a trip back in time with its classic soda-fountain mixes. Tuesday evenings are often booked by local groups for fundraisers, and every November the theater is host to a final of the Seattle International Comedy Competition, which we highly recommend if you happen to be here.

Visit artists on the Art Studio Tour Vashon’s Art Studio Tour started more than 25 years ago to help the island’s small pottery community sell its offerings. As the arts community has grown over the years, the tour has expanded to include all artists and developed into a beloved tradition. The tour is typically held for two weekends in late spring and winter, when scores of artists open their studio doors, inviting the public to come in, look around and, if they wish to do so, purchase art directly from the artists. Those who head out on the tour will find an array of art: paintings, pottery, jewelry, blown glass, mosaics and more. The tour is also a wonderful way to see Vashon and Maury Islands. Many of the studios are tucked in the woods or perched above the water in intimate, private settings. The spring Art Studio Tour is held every year in early May — excellent timing for a special gift for Mother’s Day. The holiday Art Studio Tour takes place each year the first two weekends in December. A detailed map of the tour is available at island businesses or can be downloaded prior to the event. Come out, come out wherever you are

Heritage Museum hosts LGBTQ exhibit By Stephen Silha and Ellen Kritzman

D

espite the multitude of rainbow flags lining Vashon Highway for Gay Pride month in June, it’s not immediately obvious when you debark the ferry that Vashon Island has the highest per capita population of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer) people in Washington State — and one of the highest in the country. Vashon’s Heritage Museum — housed in an old Lutheran church — wanted to explore the secrets and celebrate the diversity of the island’s large LGBTQ community, so they asked us to create an exhibit. We call it In and Out: Being LGBTQ on Vashon Island. It’s open from June 7, 2019, through March, 2020. Our biggest challenges: Before 1993, much of queer life on the island was in the closet, and today there really is no cohesive LGBTQ community. Finding early stories wasn’t easy. We speculate that the native sHebabS people had Two Spirit shamans, and that some of Vashon’s early logging and farming settlers were gay, but we can’t know for sure. We know that islander Don Paulson documented much of the region’s gay history for the Seattle Gay News — but not much about Vashon. We know that lesbian softball and gay bowling and potlucks were popular in the 1980s. In 1993, Kathy Shafel and Shelly Hibbard had some friends over for dinner, including men from the gay social group Men on the Rock. There the idea emerged to become more visible, to stand up for our rights, to

With the invitation to “Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are,” the Vashon Gay Pride Alliance was born. That was also the year nearly 40 islanders attended the Third National March on Washington, DC for Gay and Lesbian Rights and were inspired to become more active. The island’s new Gay Pride Alliance “came out” by raising money for Island nonprofits and institutions. By picking up litter on the highway, we got the name “Vashon Gay Pride Alliance” posted on adopt-a-road signs, a signal that the island is LGBT friendly. The signs were vandalized and/or stolen numerous times, and King County had to replace them,

while The Beachcomber editorialized about ridding the island of hate and intolerance. At the same time, the AIDS crisis was ripping the community apart, and we lost some of our brightest lights — at least 13 people who were brilliant writers, performers, gardeners, entrepreneurs, organizers, chefs and community contributors. To create the exhibit, we conducted over a dozen interviews, speaking with diverse members of the island’s rainbow community. We also spoke with old-time islanders, looking for tidbits of queer lore. We issued a questionnaire that asked people specific questions about Vashon’s LGBTQ life. We spread the word through newspaper articles and asked people to give us photos, artifacts and stories. We even held a “story

circle” to encourage people to tell us stories we hadn’t heard. Island historian Bruce Haulman worked with us every step of the way, and he recruited Jessica DeWire to design the exhibit — a happy decision because she knew pieces of history we didn’t, and her sensibilities inform the unusual presentation that museum-goers will experience. That experience starts with walking into a claustrophobic closet and coming out yourself, to access exploration of the island’s rainbow history. Artist Brian Fisher collected the anthems people have come out to and created window art with the theme “Let’s Dance!” This exhibit recruited a sizable, engaged advisory committee, ranging in age from 17 to 70-something, including the president of the Queer Spectrum Alliance at Vashon High School, which lobbied for the first all-gender bathrooms in the state. We think this is a must-see exhibit. Look for related programs and events of all types, and check out vashonpride.com. — Stephen Silha is a filmmaker, freelance writer and consultant. Ellen Kritzman has volunteered with many island nonprofits and was a founding member of the Vashon Pride Alliance.

The Heritage Museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays at 10105 SW Bank Road. For more information about the museum, including its permanent collection and the LGBTQ exhibit, see vashonheritagemuseum.org. Courtesy Photo

Island theaters: A showcase for the arts By Elizabeth Shepherd

V

ashon Center for the Arts, which opened its doors in 2016, is a $20 million state-of-the-art performing arts, education and exhibition space located at Cemetery Road and Vashon Highway. The stage in the center’s Kay White Hall is large enough to hold the 70-voice Vashon Island Chorale, and yet, with 300 seats, still feels intimate. In the coming months, VCA will boast an impressive array of events, many of which are part of VCA’s ongoing Arts & Humanities lectures, jazz series, classical music series and family shows. Drama Dock’s production of the rock musical, “The Who’s Tommy,” opens on June 28 and runs on weekends through July 7. Vashon Opera will present Guiseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata,” in the Kay White hall on Sept. 17 and 19. Other summer fun at the center will include Garden Tour-related events in June, and a rolling Vashon Summer Arts Festival in July and August. Visit vashoncenterforthearts.org to find out more. Open Space for Arts & Community’s story began in 2005, when islanders David Godsey and Janet McAlpin purchased a former Seattle’s Best Coffee warehouse and packaging plant. The

couple had a vision for turning the cavernous space into a place to practice and present circus arts, including trapeze, acrobatics and aerial work. But they also wanted to make the facility available to other islanders — a place, said Godsey, where people could “realize a dream.” Today, Open Space is thriving, and with recent renovations now boasts a black box theater, a grand hall big enough to accommodate 600 guests for auctions and other community events and a lobby space that can be transformed into an art gallery. The building is also the site of UMO Ensemble’s aerial school. There are also 3 acres of grounds, with a breathtaking view of Mount Rainier for outdoor events. Beginning this summer, Open Space will be the site of a concert series presented by Vashon Events, a Rotary-sponsored outdoors Blues and Brews Festival featuring Coco Montoya and other musicians on June 29, and “Open Air,” an annual outdoor aerial performance festival on Aug. 3. Civic Rep, the resident theater company of Open Space, will present “Top Girls,” by Caryl Churchill, with a cast of female island theater artists. The next performance of Open Space’s ongoing burlesque series, Burlesco Notturno, will take place on Nov. 2. For more information about events and renting the space, visit openspacevashon.com. Vashon High School’s theater, a 265-seat proscenium stage, is housed in an 80,000 square foot, bright and modern facility that opened in 2014. The space has been used not only as a classroom and the site of school band concerts, open mics and plays, but also as the venue for community talks, musical events and local theater productions. In keeping with the school district’s aim of welcoming all islanders to visit and use a facility they paid for with tax dollars, rental rates for community groups to use the theater are very low. But the theater is adaptable for a variety of presentations and is comfortable for audiences. There are also large makeup and dressing rooms backstage. The Free Range Folk Choir and Vashon’s community theater group, Drama Dock, have both been regular users.

I

t’s hard to believe, but it’s been more than a decade since islanders first thrilled to the sound of their own resident opera company. Now, Vashon Opera — with 21 full scale opera productions, three children’s operas, a long-running lecture series, 10 gala events and an operatic recital to its credit — has just closed its 10th anniversary season with a stellar production of André Previn’s “A Streetcar Named Desire,” an opera based on the heart-wrenching play by Tennessee Williams. In September, the company’s production of Guiseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” will bow at Vashon Center for the Arts, marking the start of 11 seasons of opera on Vashon. In “Traviata,” as in most of Vashon Opera’s past offernings, the production will feature a winning combination of local talent and rising regional and national opera luminaries. A chorus made up of singers culled from the membership of Vashon Island Chorale will take the stage. But these lucky amateurs will share the stage with professional opera singers, cast in demanding principal roles. Vashon Opera’s founders, Jennifer and Andy Krikawa,

have also appeared in principal roles in many productions. James Brown, who has long served as the opera’s conductor, stage director, musical director and orchestra arranger, wields the baton, directing a professional orchestra that included local heroes, such as cellist Douglas Davis and violinist Karin Choo. For Jennifer Krikawa, the opera’s artistic director, the island’s support of the company has meant the world to its founders and artists. “The community has kept us pushing forward and saying yes, we’re going in the right direction, and this is worth it,” Jennifer said. “We have truly felt this is wanted, this is needed, this is loved.” Jennifer, a slender, full-throated soprano, moved to Vashon in 2004 with her husband Andy, an accomplished baritone. At the time, the couple was intent on leaving their opera careers, which demanded constant travel, behind them. Andy, they had decided, would work a regular job, and Jennifer would become a full-time mother to the couple’s two small children. But both Krikawas had sung at venues that included the New York City Opera, and it didn’t take long for word to get around on Vashon about their vocal prowess. The first to be clued in were parishioners of St. John Vianney Church, where the couple joined the choir and served as cantors. For some, the development might have seemed like a gift from God. Islanders Jo Ann and Tom Bardeen were among those whose jaws dropped when they first heard the Krikawas sing at the church. Almost immediately, Jennifer said, Jo Ann recruited her to join the Vashon Island Chorale. “She said, ‘I’ll be picking you up on Tuesdays, and you’ll be going to the chorale,’” Jennifer recalled, with a melodious laugh. After Jennifer sang “The Magic Flute,” produced by islander Nancy Bachant and directed by Elizabeth Nye in 2006, and subsequently performed a sold-out recital, the Bardeens led the drumbeat to persuade the Krikawas to found their own opera company. “We were behind them 100 percent,” Jo Ann said, noting that she and her husband had been inspired by seeing an opera produced in an intimate setting in Venice. “We

Early on, the opera performed in unexpected and even rustic locations. Its first production was presented at the old Vashon High School theater, a now demolished structure that had grown dilapidated with age. The opera’s spring productions were presented at Bethel Church, another unlikely setting for grand opera, but one that was embraced by the community and church members. Audience members sat in the pews, and at intermission, wandered into the church’s grounds and into the social hall to sip lemonade and nibble on cookies provided by the ladies of the church. Jennifer looks back on those years with pride, recalling how the company was able to create memorable experiences for the audience in non-traditional settings. “It was always like this little miracle that we were able to pull things off in a very professional way,” she said. “People were always impressed by the production values

and how we transformed those spaces.” But in the spring of 2016, with the grand opening of the new Vashon Center for the Arts, the company finally found a more expansive stage, better acoustics, and perhaps most importantly, an orchestra pit. “Now that we have the pit, we have 23 orchestra members, and it really feels like we represent what opera sounds like,” Jennifer said. And for Jo Ann Bardeen, who continues to serve as the chorus master of the company she first championed, the experience of being part of the opera has been transformative. She recalled how she once counted the islanders listed in the credits for one opera and discovered that 105 locals had helped bring the company’s production of “Carmen” to the stage on Vashon. “To be part of the entire process of creating an opera is absolutely magical,” she said. ashon has a thriving farming community, which is showcased each week from April to December at the weekly Farmers Market. Throughout the growing and harvest seasons, customers will find plant starts, justpicked fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers and an array of handcrafted items, from wooden spoons to jewelry. Baked goods, meat, handcrafted caramels, artisan canned goods and hot food items round out the offerings. Market hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in the Village Green. In the winter, the market moves indoors, creating an excellent place to shop for holiday food and gifts. Often there are special events throughout the year, including a harvest fair in September and Cider Fest in October. The market accepts a variety of payment types, including checks, credit and debit cards EBT and WIC. For more information about the market and to sign up for the weekly “fresh sheet,” see vigavashon.org. Those who would like the market to come to them should read about “Vashon Fresh,” an online ordering service from Vashon growers, found on the same vigavashon website.

Weddings on Vashon

F

or those planning a Pacific Northwest wedding, there is no more beautiful or convenient location than Vashon Island. Only 15 minutes from Seattle, Vashon is lauded as a rural escape that makes visitors forget they are in the middle of the bustling Puget Sound region, right between Seattle and Tacoma. Vashon boasts quintessential Northwest scenery and provides a setting for couples looking for anything from quiet beaches and expansive views to rustic farms with rural charm. While Vashon’s setting may be the standout feature for those seeking to tie the knot, island weddings are made easier with local creative bakers, skilled caterers, unique mobile food and beverage options, talented musicians, florists and photographers. From longtime islanders who choose a do-it-yourself affair, to those who travel here for a destination wedding and put tasks in the hands of professionals, they’ll find resources they need right here on the island. For many, a wedding represents the realization of a dream, and Vashon only adds to the magic of the day.

Getting started: the Chamber of Commerce Vashon is a popular place to get married, and whether couples are planning their special day on the island from home in the Pacific Northwest or from across the country, the Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce can help connect them with the right people and places for the event. Jim Marsh, director of Vashon’s chamber of commerce, says the chamber frequently gets calls from couples asking about getting married on Vashon — a place he believes is an excellent wedding choice. “It is rural and full of natural beauty, yet close to Seattle and Tacoma. It’s accessible, but with a remote feel,” he said. Marsh and other chamber staff members are happy to talk with couples and assist as they plan. “We try to know everything we can. If we don’t know, we will find someone who does,” Marsh said. The chamber website features a wedding section with a directory to a range

of vendors and services, from bakers to musicians to officiants. There, couples will find a wealth of information, whether planning a large formal winter wedding or a casual summer wedding on the beach with close friends and family. Should they wish to, couples who get married on Vashon can create a truly one-of-a-kind event, Marsh said, with everything from local food and beverages to island musicians to homegrown flowers all adding to the celebration, whether it lasts a day or longer. Marsh noted that among the benefits of an island wedding is that most guests enjoy making the trip to Vashon, and many plan time to enjoy what the island has to offer — great beaches, parks, restaurants and shops — and often stay an extra day or more. “It can kind of be one big adventure with a wedding,” he said. What’s more, Marsh noted that for many people, where they get married becomes a part of their lives for years to

Churches The island is home to several denominations and a wide variety of churches, ranging from the historic Burton Community Church near a marina, to the charming Havurat Ee Shalom on the island’s west side. For a larger venue near the center of town in a traditional building, the Vashon Methodist Church offers the church sanctuary and fellowship hall for rent.

Farms

If a rustic style wedding better suits you and your beloved, try the Old Chaser Farm or the Triplebrook Guest Cottage and Barn, which rent out spaces for catering and can accommodate small or large parties. You may also want to consider the Madrona

Meadows Bed and Barn as a destination for a private ceremony or island retreat after you say “I do.” Gardens What could be better than a wedding set amid vibrant, colorful and masterfully cultivated plants you won’t see anywhere else? Lavender Hill Farm is a beautiful venue complete with rolling hills, green pastures and breathtaking views of Quartermaster Harbor and Mount Rainier. Similarly, Vashon Field and Pond offers accommodations for up to 500 guests and plenty of amenities, including a staging area, parking, guest house and even space for camping. Finally, Herban Feast’s Frogsongg Gardens, on 16 splendid acres, is beyond compare with a bubbling stream flowing across an English garden-inspired estate that can accommodate up to 150 people and is available for events June through September.

Non-traditional spots

For an alternative venue that is new to the island and has already made a name for itself with weddings, try the Lodges on Vashon, a stylish and contemporary collection of bungalows with beautiful courtyards all located in the center of town. There are also many community event spaces such as the large Open Space for Arts & Community or the Vashon Sportsmen’s Club with ample room for your guests to spread out. Looking for something nautical? Washington State Ferries has you covered — they allow for weddings aboard the ferry fleet. Call 206-464-6400 with questions. Finally, those with connections on Vashon should consider using them. Many memorable island ceremonies are held at the lawns, barns or waterfront homes of island residents.
