From its beginning as a railway stop, lumber mill settlement, and rural agricultural town, Covington has grown to a population of approximately 19,850 residents today. The city’s location, nestled in SE King County, makes it a desirable place for locating families and businesses. Covington is geographically framed by regional recreational amenities, being about 30 minutes from the Puget Sound to the west and 30 minutes from the Cascade foothills to the east. Covington is also close to several institutions of higher education including community colleges and universities like Green River College, Renton Technical College, University of Washington (Seattle or Tacoma) and many more. Covington boasts amenities that are essential to residents and visitors including a wide array of retail, food and service-based businesses, a brand new hospital, and the completion of the Covington Community Park, the city’s largest park featuring amazing amenities. A new development known as Lakepointe will also begin taking shape on 256th Street. This project features about one million square feet of retail/commercial space to house new shops, restaurants, and possibly a hotel and movie theater. The property will feature a small lake available for recreation use and up to 1,500 housing units. In the past 20 years as an incorporated city, regional growth has made significant impacts on Covington. As growth occurs, it

sometimes takes a while for roads to catch up. The city is excited to proceed with work on two major road projects in the near future – SR 516 widening from Jenkin’s Creek to 185th Place SE and the 204th Connector from SR 516 to SE 256th. While the city council encourages economic development, it also believes that the participation of social service programs at a local level is the true soul of the city; recognizing that an unmatched quality of life is a necessity rather than an unattainable goal. Because of this, active residents can enjoy many city-sponsored events that promote public involvement and community pride. Covington’s signature events include the Covington Days Festival, Summer Concerts in the Park, Covington KidsFest, Sausage and Cider Fest, Outdoor Family Movie and Concert, and the annual Tree Lighting. Almost all events are free for residents and they are also a great opportunity for local businesses to participate as vendors or sponsors and show their commitment to their community. For residents or business leaders who want to be more involved, the city has six volunteer commissions including the Youth Council, Economic Development Council, Parks Commission, Arts Commission, Human Services Commission and Planning Commission. The commissions are made up of dedicated volunteers that care for or have a stake in the community. Volunteer opportunities are also available in the police department and for city events.
