What if we had not won the Revolution? H

ave you ever thought about what the world would be like if we had not won the Revolutionary War? I did the other day while thinking about the Fourth of July. And, thinking of how England works today, here is what I came up with: some questions, some conclusions, some conjecture. Many of our country’s early heroes would instead be criminals: George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams and many other fathers of the revolution. And Benedict Arnold would be a hero. The U.S. practices the federal constitutional republic form of government, while the U.K. uses constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary system. We would not have a president; we would serve the queen. We would probably not be able to elect an American to the office of prime minister. We could not have anyone serve in the House of Lords, the governing body. And our representatives

A VETERAN’S VIEW Jim Daly in the House of Commons would be in England more than half the year, which would make it difficult for them to represent their constituents. We would be using pounds and pence, not dollars and cents. Banks would be different, and building societies (which could be equated with credit unions) are primarily members’ savings to provide mortgages to members, not full-service financial institutions. Properties and houses would be much smaller, often handed down

from generation to generation, and owning acreage would be only for the extremely wealthy. Our judges would not be elected. Instead, lower court judges would be appointed in some kind of competition by the Judicial Appointments Commission. Much of English law is settled in small claims courts and magistrate courts. There would be no state courts per se. We would only have one state, probably called America. Would we even have higher courts in America? Or would we have to travel to the U.K.? Would we have Americans on the High Court? Our taxes would be much higher. The top rate of federal income tax is 35% in the U.S., and it becomes lower until we earn more than $398,100 in a yearIn the U.K. the tax rate is 40% if you earn more than £42,475 (U.S. $52,583) and 50% if you earn more than £150,000 (U.S. $189,000). Also, Social Security is charged at 5.65% of most incomes, compared with the equivalent National

Insurance, which is calculated at 12% (although only above income of £7,605, or U.S. $9,582, per year). But the reason Americans rebelled was that taxes were being levied against individuals and on items imported into America that were not charged in England. I think the most obvious difference is that we would be driving on the left side of the road and not on the wrong side of the road as we do today. There also might not be any muscle cars, hot rods, drag races, recreational vehicles, SUVs or pickup trucks. And I don’t believe we would have our “interstate” highway system. Would we have personal computers? The internet? Cellphones? They were invented in the United States as it exists now, unencumbered by U.K. rules on business investment and research. Much of the medicine used today might not exist, either. Speaking of medicine, health care would be free. The U.K.’s general practitioners are on

contract with the government to provide services, even if they are not government employees. Hospital workers are all government (National Health Service) employees. I can’t really fathom how different our world would be today if we had not won the Revolutionary War. These thoughts are only a few fairly obvious differences. There are nuances in government and politics, economy, education, law, society, technology and so much more that would cause infinite differences from what we are to what we would have become. Would you want to live in America if we had not won the Revolutionary War? Not me. This is the greatest country in the world, just the way it is. Jim Daly, a retired captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, is a member of the Aberdeen Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 224, and the Vietnam Veterans of America.

The first week of July is a very busy time around Grays Harbor. Numerous events will celebrate America’s Independence Day, including the 40th annual Tokeland Parade. In addition, there’s plenty going on up north for Chief Taholah Days — the Quinault Indian Nation’s annual commemoration of the signing of the Quinault Treaty in 1855. That massive festival includes a variety of sporting competitions and much more from July 3 to 7. Within these pages is a complete rundown of the major community events going on this week.
