Fathoms’ Grand Parade to usher in summer Geiger to lead Summer Fest runs through Fathoms Fourth of July parade BY BOB SMITH

PORT ORCHARD — South Kitsap’s traditional entree into summer — Fathoms O’ Fun’s Grand Parade — will take over Bay Street at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, with its usual assemblage of colorful floats, marching bands and dance teams. The parade through downtown Port Orchard Saturday will be the 52nd restaging of the summer festival’s premier event. Sharron King, chair of the Fathoms O’ Fun Summer Festival, said she’s expecting the usual fun and flamboyance as in past years when the parade lineup begins its march. So far, King said, the list of participants this year — under 100 — is somewhat shorter than last year, although parade favorites, such as the Kitsap Mustangs, the South Kitsap High Community Band and the traditional assortment of community festival floats, will be on hand to liven up proceedings. The grand marshal this year is Port Orchard civic leader and former businessman Robert Geiger. Kitsap Credit Union is the parade’s primary sponsor this year. On Friday, the day before the parade, and running until 5 p.m. on Sunday, the Fathoms’ vendor show and bouncy toys activity will take place at the gazebo located at the Port of Bremerton’s Marina Park at Port Orchard. At 6:30 p.m. at the same location, the classic-rock band “Ignite” will play its lively assortment of tunes until 8 p.m. On the day of the parade, the Hot Foot 5K Race, sponsored by SKFRVA, will begin at 9 a.m. at South Kitsap Regional Park. And throughout the day until 9 p.m., the

The Sequim Irrigation Festival Float was the winner of the Mayor’s Community Festival Float Award last year at the parade. Princess Liliana Williams waves to the crowd during the 2018 Fathoms parade. 4th U.S. Company C will conduct live demonstrations of Civil War living history while in period dress. Other events during Saturday will keep folks entertained until parade time: a horseshoe tournament at the park, goldfish races at the Kitsap Bank drive-thru parking lot, and a performance at the gazebo by the Tammy Frost Band.

After the parade concludes, an air show over Sinclair Inlet will be presented by Boomtown Productions. At 10:15 p.m., the Bremerton Bridge Blast fireworks show off the Manette Bridge will be visible from the Port Orchard waterfront. Sunday’s festival highlight will be the return of the Fathoms O’ Fun Dinghy Derby on Sinclair Inlet. The

event starts at noon. Port Orchard’s own Fourth of July fireworks show, sponsored by WAVE, will blast off at 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. A complete Fathoms event schedule and a list of parade participants are included inside the Independent’s Fathoms O’ Fun Summer Festival special section this issue.

PORT ORCHARD — Very few citizens of our Kitsap County burg have cut as wide a swath as has Robert Geiger. Now 91, Geiger’s name is synonymous with this city of 14,000. His last name graced the front sign of Geiger Family Rexall Pharmacy from 1957 to 2009 at the location where 7-Eleven now sits just off Bay Street in Port Orchard. Perhaps most notably, this community leader and former small business owner is best remembered for his civic service. Geiger served 46-plus years as a member of the City Council until the end of 2007, when he retired from office. His years as a councilmember were recognized as having been the longest continuous tenure of any elected official in the state of Washington. Fittingly, at the end of his time in office, Port Orchard City Hall’s council chambers were named in his honor. On Saturday evening, Geiger and his wife Ursula — the couple married in 1959 and are celebrating their 60th anniversary of marriage this year — will sit atop a convertible while shepherding over the Fathoms O’ Fun Summer Festival’s Grand Parade along Bay Street. And Geiger will serve as the parade’s grand marshal. Geiger said he remembers the “Days of ‘49’” celebrations in Port Orchard, a precursor to the Fathoms festival that now enlivens South Kitsap’s summers. He was a sponsor of Royalty Court contestant Sharon GEIGER, SEE 2

Vaughn, whose stint as Fathoms O’ Fun Queen led to a term as Miss Washington. Geiger’s pharmacy store also sponsored numerous youth groups and young students over two decades. In addition to his time as an elected city official, the Lincoln High School of Tacoma and University of Washington graduate was the familiar Bob Geiger face behind the pharmacy’s counter. While running a small business is difficult any day of the week, Geiger said he remembers when it sometimes became a life-or-death proposition. In the 1970s and 1980s, he and other pharmacists endured troubling instances of robberies and burglaries. During that time of rampant drug use in the nation, the former pharmacist said no business was immune to holdups and break-ins. “Every pharmacy in the state of Washington had been robbed

at least once” during those years, he said. His business had been broken into by burglars seeking drugs — one instance via entry hatches cut from the business above his and other times busting through the store’s entry doors. Thankfully, those turbulent times have passed, he said. The pharmacist shared a favorite, more enjoyable story from his days at the pharmacy: Geiger recounted how one day, a big black Cadillac pulled up outside the store and the driver came inside. He asked the pharmacist to venture outside and speak with his mother, who was inside the Caddy. When Geiger leaned in toward the car’s window, the hand of the man’s mother jutted out and grabbed him. She then placed a big kiss on his lips and asked Geiger, “How does it feel to be kissed by a 90-year-old woman?” The retired businessman now lives a quieter life with Ursula in the same Port Orchard home they’ve lived in since 1959. The couple has three children, two of whom are retired South Kitsap High School teachers. Daughter Carol Nelson was a Fathoms

Queen at one time, and granddaughter Bailey Jo Nelson also took on Fathoms’ queenly duties. The longtime Port Orchard community icon has seen the ups and downs of this community over the past 62 years. Asked if he had any observations to share about the city’s long-term future, Geiger said he is as interested as anyone to see what the future holds for Port Orchard. “It’s as unpredictable as anything else because good things happen here and there,” Geiger said. “But most of the buildings downtown are owned by people who don’t do anything with them except collect the rent.” The Fathoms parade’s grand marshal said that he hopes current community leaders instead look to the example set by Hannah Langer, widow of Frank Langer, who purchased Kitsap County Bank in 1922 (it was renamed Kitsap Bank in 1987). She became the first female bank president in the western United States and ran the operation until 1972. “Mrs. Langer had the best interests of Port Orchard at heart while running the bank. More leaders should follow her example,” he said.

Ed Fisher: ‘I was appreciative, humbled and very honored’ Longtime SK football coach to have field renamed for him this fall BY MARK KRULISH Kitsap News Group

PORT ORCHARD — Ed Fisher’s coaching legacy at South Kitsap speaks for itself. His teams won 80 percent of their games (197-49), made 17 state playoff appearances in 22 seasons, made three finals appearances and won one state championship. He’s known locally as the coach in charge of what was once one of the most consistent and dominant football programs in the state, but soon every person from around the state and country who visit South Kitsap will get to know his name. Fisher made the trip up from Arizona, where he currently lives, to Port Orchard last week as the South Kitsap School District Board of Directors made it official — Joe Knowles Field will become Ed Fisher Field this fall. A dedication ceremony is currently slated for Sept. 13, South Kitsap’s home opener against Rogers. D.J. Sigurdson, an administrator in the South Kitsap School District and Fisher’s former assistant and eventual successor, was the one to notify Fisher at his home. “First, I sat down,” Fisher said when he was told the news. “Then I was very appreciative. I was humbled and very honored.” Speaking with the Independent by phone, Fisher fondly recalled his time in Port Orchard and the support he received from the community. “When we were at away games, we would have as many or more fans than the home

team,” Fisher said. “They very much enjoyed it. A sense of pride developed in the community — even though we were just ‘little Port Orchard,’ we could play in Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Spokane. We could play with anyone.” Hired at the age of 25, Fisher was tasked with turning around a program that had been successful throughout its first three decades but struggled following the departure of coach Stener Kvinsland in 1957. The five coaches who followed went a combined 35-93-6 until Fisher took over in 1974. He had previously coached at a high school in Oregon for two seasons and spent one year at the University of Hawaii. “It was real simple,” Fisher said. “I was hired to teach our students and coach our football team, and I just did my job and I did the best I could.” After a modest start to his career, South Kitsap went 7-2 in 1978 and 1979 and finished 7-3 in 1980. The Wolves won double-digit games every year in the first half of the 1980s and reached the state championship twice — they lost to Gonzaga Prep, 25-7, in 1982 and to Juanita, 41-27, in 1984. Those Juanita teams in the mid-to-late 1980s were notable for featuring many of the kids from the Kirkland team that won the Little League World Series in 1982. Despite those close calls, South Kitsap continued to be one of the state’s most consistent programs during the rest of Fisher’s run. “The credit, as I explained to the school board, it goes to the players, the coaches, the administration, the faculty and the staff that we had assembled,” Fisher said. “They paved the way so we could be as good as we were. It’s about the people here that they had assembled. They did a great job.” The dream of finally win-

two years, the Wolves had graduated a number of experienced players, including future

NFL linemen Benji Olson and Tony Coats. They went 8-2 and 10-1 in 1992 and 1993 but were eliminated both years by Newport in one-score games. The players stepping in were talented but untested at the varsity level, but South Kitsap rolled through its regular season schedule — its smallest margin of victory was 11 points. However, the unheralded and relatively undersized Wolves lacked true star power and were still not considered serious state title contenders. They had played poorly in the first half the week before against Wilson before rallying and coming away with a 36-20 victory.

“I only felt real good for about the last 30 seconds of the state championship game,” Fisher said. Cathartically, the Wolves beat their nemesis from the 1980s, Juanita, in the opening round and beat Newport on a last-minute touchdown by Justin Smith to reach the championship. Ryan Lareau booted a 45-yard field goal — then a state finals record — to open the scoring in the first quarter. Brad Ecklund then rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries as the Wolves bested Walla Walla 15-10 in a tense, dramatic final at the Kingdome. “Those kids battled so hard,” Fisher said. “They had a chip on their shoulder and they were determined.”

The rare-earth metal dilemma for Washington, United States Hopefully, when American and Chinese leaders meet to resolve trade differences, talks won’t break down and result in a new round of tariffs or product restrictions. It is in both nations’ interests for presidents Trump and Xi Jinping to find common ground. Our state has a lot riding on those negotiations. The Brookings Institute points out that Washington would be “the worst off” of any state because 154,000 people are employed in industries that would be By DON BRUNELL affected by new Chinese countermeasures. Especially troublesome is that the Chinese indicated they may cut off exports of rare-earth metals to our country. They are important because of their unique magnetic, luminescent and electrochemical properties that make many technologies perform with reduced weight, emissions and energy consumption. The U.S. Geological Survey adds: “These special metals provide greater efficiency, performance, miniaturization, speed, durability and thermal stability.” While the 17 elements classified as “rare earth” are not commonly known, they are critical components in products ranging from smartphones and laptop computers to batteries, electric vehicle and jet engines, wind turbines, LEDs and major weapons systems. The U.S. currently imports 80 percent of its rare-earth metals from China. China sits on 40 percent of the global deposits and currently produces 80 percent (120,000 metric tons) of the world’s supply. Australia is second, making 20,000 metric tons. Our government has a “Critical Minerals List” consisting of 35 metals considered to be vital to our national economy and security. “For 14 of the 35, the U.S. is completely import-dependent, and in 10 of those 14 cases, China is the U.S.’s largest supplier or the world’s largest producer,” Larry Reaugh, American Manganese CEO, wrote in a recent Economic Standard editorial. The U.S. has one rare-earth mine, which was closed in 2015 after the owner went bankrupt. The Mountain Pass open pit is located in southeastern California — 60 miles southwest of Las Vegas. When operational, the ore was sent to China for processing. Here’s the dilemma. Mining and processing rare-earth metals is messy and most countries don’t want to deal with the associated pollutants. Nowhere is the contamination more evident than in China itself. The giant Mongolian open pit mine in Bayan Obo is 75 miles north of Baotou, a city of 2.4 million people. The mine produces the bulk of the world’s rare-earth metals and does so as a byproduct of iron-ore mining. The ore is transported to Bautou’s outskirts for processing. The rareearth minerals are separated and purified using hydro-metallurgical techniques and acid baths. The spent processing water is pumped into a six-mile-long tailing pond. The foul waters of the tailing pond not only contain all sorts of toxic chemicals, but also radioactive elements such as thorium, which if ingested, causes cancer, London’s Guardian newspaper reported in 2012. Before the factories were built, there were just fields of watermelon and tomatoes as far as the eye could see, Li Guirong, former secretary of the local Communist party, stated. Irrespective of the results of the latest U.S.-China talks, our country is heavily dependent on foreign nations for metals we need to propel our high-tech economy and military. The dilemma is that no one wants a Bayan Obo mine or Bautou processing plant in their neighborhood. Part of the solution is to recycle and recover as many components as possible — and not send our used batteries, cellphones and electronics to

News flash: Some vacationing Americans are dying in the Dominican Republic

In defense of Joe Biden’s abortion switcheroo BY DICK POLMAN

National political columnist

H. L. Mencken, the famed crusty commentator, said one century ago: “A politician is an animal which can sit on a fence and yet keep both ears on the ground.” I thought of that quip the other day when former Vice President Joe Biden magically declared that he supports federal Medicaid funding for poor women seeking abortions. Biden had staunchly opposed such funding for decades — and had restated Dick Polman his opposition as recently as June 5. But then the next day, he suddenly announced his support because — in his words — “circumstances had changed.” You bet they had. Biden is a front-running candidate for president, and even though polls show him beating Donald Trump by margins that exceed those of his Democratic rivals, he still needs to hose down liberals who think he’s too much of an old-school moderate. Most urgently, he needed to get himself in sync with a party base

that supports abortion access for all women regardless of income — especially now with Roe v. Wade under attack as never before. So, in response, Biden made the decision to speedily flip-flop on federal Medicaid funding. All Democratic presidential nominees since 1992 have supported that funding. In recent days, liberal activists and pundits long hostile to Biden have been quick to pounce on the guy, painting his policy reversal as a sign of weakness. But all politicians — indeed, often the most successful ones — are wont to be flexible from time to time, recalibrating their views for reasons of political expediency or exigent circumstances. Some of our biggest flip-floppers are lionized on monuments. Thomas Jefferson hated public debt so much that he called for a constitutional provision that would strip the government of its power to borrow money. Then as president, he reversed himself. He bought the Louisiana Territory from France with borrowed money and justified it by saying, “Is it not better that the opposite land of the Mississippi should be settled by our own brethren and children than by strangers of another family?”

Abraham Lincoln campaigned for president and marked his 1861 inaugural by promising that the feds would not force existing slave states to free their chattel. He initially defended “the right of each state to order and control its own domestic institutions according to its own judgment exclusively.” We know what happened to that promise. One of the most notorious flip-floppers was Franklin D. Roosevelt, known back in the day as a chameleon of no particular fixed convictions. He stumped for the White House in 1932 by promising fiscal conservatism and a balanced budget; after he won, he launched the New Deal. He often shifted leftward only when liberal activists (including the First Lady) pressured him to do so. Frances Perkins, one of his Cabinet members, said that FDR was guided by “his feeling that nothing in human judgment is final. One may courageously take the step that seems right today because it can be modified tomorrow.” More recently, Barack Obama reversed himself on same-sex POLMAN, SEE 5

Gun store suspect arrested in Las Vegas PORT ORCHARD — Chrissayn Borweick’s Las Vegas experience came up snake eyes the night of June 20. Borweick, 17, has been on the lam since last month after Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office issued a $750,000 warrant for his arrest on first-degree burglary charges stemming from

his participation in the overnight theft of 98 firearms from a Gorst gun store on April 29. The suspect, believed to be a Burien resident, was arrested as the primary suspect in the burglary by U.S. federal marshals and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers. Enjoy your Fathoms O’ Fun Summer Festival weekend! BY SHARRON KING

Chair, Fathoms O’ Fun Festival

Summer greetings to all the wonderful citizens of Port Orchard, Kitsap County and beyond! It’s Fathoms O’ Fun Summer Festival time! We invite you to help us kick off the summer. The Fathoms O’ Fun Festival Board would personally like to invite you to come and enjoy the many activities taking Sharron King place on June 27-30 in downtown Port Orchard during our Grand Parade and Summer Festival. There will be more than 60 vendors for your shopping delight beginning at noon through 6 p.m. on Friday, June 28, then from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. We have activities planned during the day. See our schedule of events for those days in this special section or at www.fathomsofun.org. On Friday, we will have a Civil War “Living History” display with a hospital unit and a Union camp. This will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Come on down and see what a hospital unit out in the field really looked like during the Civil War times. Our 52nd Grand Parade begins on Bay Street at 6 p.m., Saturday. Enjoy all that the parade has to offer, including nine out-of-town community festival floats in addition to our very own “award-winning” float; our SKHS Community Marching Band; drill teams; drum lines; novelty entries; youth groups; car clubs; commercial units; the return of the Mexican Dancing Horses; a tourism unit from Kizzmit, Canada; the Military Mobile Museum and more. Many thanks to all the great volunteers that it takes to put on this hometown parade, as well as the nearly 1,200 folks just in the parade itself. Bring the kids down for the Gold Fish Races at noon on Saturday at the Kitsap Bank drive-thru. You don’t need to bring anything — just come down and register, race a goldfish (cracker) and then take home some goldfish treats. On Sunday, we will have the third annual return of the

Dinghy Derby starting at 1 p.m. on Sinclair Inlet, so don’t miss the fun and cheer them on. Music, music, music … This year, you can enjoy four bands during our wonderful Summer Festival at the Gazebo. From 6:30-8 p.m. on Thursday evening, our Concerts by the Bay summer band series continues with the “Ranger and the Re-Arrangers” live band. On Friday Night, from 6:30-8 p.m., come hear “Ignite.” And on Saturday — Parade Day — you can listen to the great sounds of the “Tammy Frost Band” from 3-5 p.m. Then close out the day following the parade from 8 to 10:15 p.m. with public dancing in Grand Ball style to the music of “Big Bear Band” It’s all happening at the Marina Park gazebo in Port Orchard. Don’t worry about eating before you come. We have great food vendors! Our Concerts by the Bay series is on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every week and will continue through the first Thursday of September. Go to our website at www.fathomsofun.org for the full concert schedule. Not only can you enjoy our beautiful waterfront, but you can also just kick back and visit with your friends, make new friends and watch the kids play in the park as you listen to great music. Capture the moment and all that there is to enjoy on the waterfront. There will be another great Fourth of July Grand Fireworks Show over Sinclair Inlet, sponsored by WAVE for the 12th year, which will bring plenty of activity to the downtown waterfront with various bands scheduled to play from noon to 10:30 p.m. (check our website for listings). This annual show brings as many as 60,000 spectators to view the show. We are truly appreciative of WAVE for their continued sponsorship. If the citizens of Port Orchard and Bremerton would go to our website and click on the “Donate” button, we could put on a larger show. We really need community support. All of you have been watching a free show for more than 30 years. Won’t you help us to have a great show by donating? On the second Sunday in August — the 11th — you can once again enjoy the Fathoms O’ Fun Festival by the Bay, a great craft and vendor KING, SEE 12

Being part of Royalty Court means being someone special BY HELENE JENSEN

Director, Fathoms O’ Fun Royalty Court Scholarship Program

Growing up in Port Orchard in the 1970s, the Fathoms O’ Fun Festival was a household name. The big Fathoms O’ Fun Festival weekend was the highlight of the summer! I remember looking forward to participating in the Grand Parade, watching the Royalty Court Helene Jensen riding on the float, going on all the rides at the waterfront carnival and — finally — watching the fireworks on the Fourth of July. To be part of Fathoms meant you were someone special! Times have changed but what Fathoms represents has not. Fathoms O’ Fun, for those who do not know, is a community organization run completely by volunteers. Our volunteers work tirelessly to provide you with rich and inviting events within the South Kitsap community. Over the years, Fathoms has evolved from just a one-week event in June through the July 4th holiday to something that creates fun for the community all year long, starting as early as March with the crowning of our royalty as part of our scholarship program. For more than 50 years, we have been enriching our youth by helping their college dreams come true. Our program provides much more than just monies for college. We also provide young people with invaluable connections to local community businesses by expanding their communication skills to help them acquire future jobs and gain confidence in who they are as individuals and who they can grow to be. The selection process for becoming part of the royalty court can be tedious, but it’s very rewarding. Many comments I have heard throughout the years are of the same theme:

even if you don’t make it on the court, the lessons you learn by participating are priceless. Each contestant is required to develop a platform on something they are passionate about. They are required to write a 500-word essay about their passion, which is sponsored by our very own Debbie Macomber. In addition to writing their speech, they then deliver it orally to several service groups in the South Kitsap area. We kick off our competition with the first judged event at the Royalty Tea sponsored by the Port Orchard Soroptimist Club each year at Harper Church. Other groups that help with the judging process include the Port Orchard Lions, Rotary, and the Eagles and Kiwanis clubs, just to name a few. The Port Orchard Toastmasters Club critiques each contestant to help prepare them for their final speech. Each contestant is also required to go through a 10-minute private interview in which they are asked questions on their platform and application by a panel of five judges consisting of community business owners and past court members. On pageant night, each contestant answers an impromptu question, performs a talent and models formal wear of their choice to demonstrate grace and elegance. Thanks to some of our generous sponsors — the Port Orchard Lions Club, Air Masters, the Port Orchard Soroptimist Club and many more — we give away up to $5,000 in scholarships and prize money each year Being part of the Fathoms Royalty Court gives the member an opportunity to make lifelong friends and travel to parades from city to city on our award-winning float while representing Port Orchard. Not only is this fun, but it develops confidence for members of the Royalty Court to network among dignitaries, apply for jobs and to learn so much more. We also offer many vol-

unteer opportunities with local businesses and service groups to assist them in various community events. In just four short months, our young people will have contributed more than 800 cumulative hours — and counting! The hours are demanding and sometimes very tiring, but the great things in life never come easy. The most treasured assets are the ones we work the hardest to obtain. I often remind these youngsters that life’s little twists and turns help make the journey that much sweeter when it is achieved. Without these obstacles, we would take it all for granted. Efforts like this help our them feel comfortable in their community while bringing an awareness of the events around them. Their participation helps them perfect their public speaking skills and teaches them how to network. Most of all, being a part of Fathoms helps them gain connections — for life. I want to take a moment to thank some of our sponsors for their constant support: WAVE, Kitsap Credit Union, Kitsap Bank, Port Orchard Lions Club, Air Masters, Debbie Macomber, Stokes Auction, Rill Chapel, Port Orchard Ford, West Bay Auto Parts, Sound Storage, Mile Hill Storage, Papa John’s, Windermere Real Estate, Brisco Inc., Port Orchard Bay Street Association, City Councilman Fred Chang, Columbia Bank, Rotary Club of South Kitsap, Port Orchard Eagles, Kiwanis Club, Soroptimist International of Port Orchard, Gazebo Florist, Rings and Things, DeFord Photography, Olde Central Antique Mall, Harper Church, Christian Life Center, Ace Hardware, City of Port Orchard, Port of Bremerton and Kitsap County, just to name a few. Thank you, everyone! If you want to be part of this program, please visit our website: www.fathomsofun.org. Royalty Court applications will be available in the fall.

Woman leads deputies on wild two-county car chase BY BOB SMITH

Kitsap News Group

PORT ORCHARD — A 21-year-old woman was charged with second-degree assault and attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle in Kitsap County Superior Court after she engaged law enforcement officers from three jurisdictions in a wild car chase June 19 that spanned two counties. Cortney Nicole DockenChilds, identified as a transient, initially eluded a Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy at approximately 9:51 p.m. on June 18 after her Kia sedan was stopped on a

traffic violation. As the officer approached the vehicle, she allegedly sped away. After engaging in a pursuit, the officer terminated the chase. A few hours later — at 1:11 a.m. on June 19 — the deputy identified the suspect Kia in the driveway of a home at the 3900 block of Southeast Castlewood Drive in Port Orchard. Parked behind tall bushes nearby, the deputy watched as the suspect vehicle, without its lights on, speed away through a stop sign at an intersection. Making a wide right turn, the driver headed onto Maple Crest Lane, then sped through

a second stop sign at the intersection of Maple Crest Lane and Southeast Conifer Park Drive. With the deputy in pursuit, the Kia continued on its way westbound on Southeast Conifer Drive. Gaining speed, the Kia failed to yield to multiple traffic lights and maneuvered around roadway spike strips put in place by Port Orchard Police officers. The pursuit continued down Feigley Road and into Gorst, according to KCSO. Blowing through the stop sign at the intersection of Feigley and West Frontage roads, the suspect vehicle turned left, where a marked

KCSO patrol unit with emergency lights blazing waited at the entrance of Frontage. Gaining speed, the Kia headed for an apparent head-on collision with the patrol vehicle, partially off the roadway, when the suspect vehicle swerved slightly to the right at the last moment, avoiding a crash. The Kia continued on and made a left turn onto the northbound lane of State Highway 3, traveling southbound. With the deputy who had nearly been hit in pursuit, the

suspect driving the Kia continued motoring in the oncoming lane of southbound SR 3 at speeds of 95 miles per hour, the report stated. According to the deputy’s report, there was no traffic on the roadway at the time. Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies joined the pursuit as the suspect vehicle crossed into their county’s jurisdiction. The deputies deployed a spike strip at SR 3 and Romance Hill Road, which was successful in blowing out two of the Kia’s tires. The vehicle continued south-

bound on SR 3 just south of SR 106 before it came to a stop on the northbound shoulder. The suspect, a white female with short blonde hair and wearing a white shirt, then fled the vehicle and ran into the woods on the eastbound side of the road. A Kitsap County K9 team tracked down the suspect and placed her in handcuffs. Docken-Childs is being held on $100,000 bail for the felony assault charge and $10,000 on the secondary charge of eluding police.

Force women in soccer playoff hunt with 8-0 blowout BY MARK KRULISH Kitsap News Group

EAST BREMERTON — In a must-win game, the Oly-Pen Force women’s soccer team was firing on all cylinders, blitzing Black Hills FC with eight goals in an 8-0 win June 23 that keeps them alive for a playoff spot in the Northwest Premier League. A pair of locals were at the heart of the offensive outburst — former Klahowya

star Isabelle Severns recorded two goals and three assists and South Kitsap graduate Hailey Parker scored a hat trick. They, along with South Kitsap grad Emily Wilkins, were unstoppable up front. The trio hasn’t had much time together on the field this season, but they have been able to find chemistry quickly in the hopes of getting the Force to the postseason. “[Hailey] graduated in May,

I graduated in June and I just got back from college a week ago,” Severns said after the game. “So us three up top — me, Emily and Hailey — we’ve only had a week to practice and play together. It can be difficult, but we’re all competitive and we all really want it.” Severns scored the first two goals of the game, knocking home a cross from Abigal Nordquist in the third minute. She scored again in the 20th

minute off a pass from Jessica Haga. That might have been enough with the way the Force were controlling the ball, but the goals kept coming as the

players kept finding ways to break down the Black Hills defense. “We’re all pretty competitive, so we wanted to knock some in,” Severns said.

In the 24th minute, a long ball sent Severns away down the left sideline and she laid up a pass for Parker, who had plenty of room for a clean strike to make it 3-0. Four minutes later, a Severns cross went over the head of Wilkins, but Parker was trailing the play and walked right into a shot to give the Force a 4-0 halftime lead. “The win today was needed, 100 percent,” said keeper Ricci Wiedbrecht, a former South Kitsap Wolf who picked up her NWPL-record seventh clean sheet. Another former Klahowya Eagle, Emily Peters, set up the fifth goal on a nice cross from the left side. Miranda Hoidal had to take a couple of whacks at it but eventually got it through the defense and past the keeper. Nordquist picked up a goal in the 67th minute, then Parker completed her hat trick with a strike off the left post in the 82nd minute. Wilkins scored the final goal of the game in the 89th minute. The Force rebounded well from their game played a little less than 24 hours beforehand. It looked like they were headed for a draw against the Washington Timbers before their opponent shocked them with an 88th-minute goal. Six teams qualify for the NWPL playoffs and four have already been clinched, so the Force can secure their spot with three points from their final game. That match takes place on the road in Centralia on Sunday, June 30, at Tiger Stadium. It should be a highly competitive game as the Force take on Twin City Union, another team fighting for one of the final two playoff spots.
