Welcome

TO SEQUIM LAVENDER WEEKEND!

Welcome to Sequim Lavender Weekend, where we celebrate this beautiful and fragrant purple herb! For the past 23 years, lavender lovers have been traveling to Sequim from around the world to soak in the beauty, fragrance and fun during this action-packed weekend. The popular Street Fair is located at Carrie Blake Park again this year. We hope you enjoy the natural setting as you stroll through the artisan booths and enjoy the music and delicious food. One of the highlights of Lavender Weekend is

visiting local lavender farms. This year there are 17 farms and one commercial nursery open for you to enjoy. Each farm is different and has its own unique character reflecting the personality and style of the owners. Try to visit as many as your time allows, and experience the array of activities offered at each farm. In addition to all the lavender events, there are art shows, a quilt show, wine tastings, musical performances and more community events throughout the weekend.

An event of this scope and caliber really takes a village to produce. I want to thank all the organizations that are hosting activities and all of the volunteers who are providing the necessary support. Relax, breathe deep and enjoy your visit to the Lavender Capital of North America and Sequim Lavender Weekend. Dennis Smith, Mayor City of Sequim

B&B FAMILY FARM

5883 Old Olympic Highway • 360-504-2585 • bbfamilyfarm.com

B&B Family Farm is excited to participate once again in the tradition of Sequim’s Lavender Weekend. Our farm is open May through September and is always free, including Sequim Lavender Weekend.

You will find more than 13,000 plants of 16 different varieties growing on our farm, and many folks also will get to see the lavender hanging to dry in our almost centuryold barn. We have fantastic photo

opportunities throughout our property with our barns, Olympic Mountain range backdrop and beautiful lavender fields. Our family — Bruce, Bonnie, Kristy and Zion (and kids!) — is excited to share our story and our love of lavender by providing informational tours of our lavender drying and processing. Additionally, we have distilling demonstrations from our certified International Perfume Foundation distiller, Zion, plus lavender harvesting information and bud defoliating and cleaning demonstrations with our unique “jitter-bud” lavender cleaning machine. Our tours happen continuously throughout the day with little to no waiting.

We have a beautiful new gift shop full of handmade lavender soaps, lotions, award-winning essential oils and many other treats — all made here on our farm. U-cut lavender is available and easy to access. We will have lavender lemonade for sale and several activities for kids during Lavender Weekend. We are easy to access on Old Olympic Highway and have 12 sprawling acres with plenty of parking. B&B Family Farm is family- and pet-friendly and has a relaxed and low-key atmosphere. Join our family as we celebrate another season of lavender in Sequim. We look forward to meeting you!

JARDIN DU SOLEIL LAVENDER FARM 3932 Sequim-Dungneess Way • 360-582-1185 • jardindusoleil.com

Our family farm is excited to share our eighth festival and the farm’s 20th with you. Come visit our “Garden of the Sun,” the only farm in Sequim surrounded by hundreds of acres of untouched Dungeness scenery. This year we are adding new crafts and new experiences, like a Volkswagen photo booth bus, and we are continuing favorite Jardin du Soleil traditions and our popular shuttle service from downtown out to the farm. You can check out all the weekend has to offer without driving around. While visiting Jardin du Soleil, some of the things we are proud to offer are the experience of getting lost (and found) in our garden maze, listening to the bees while cutting your own fresh bundle and watching your family smile while they enjoy our new and unique family-friendly lavender crafts. Hang out and listen to great music on the lawn or browse vendors featuring some amazing handcrafted jewelry, art, clothing and even get an original henna design. Our gift shop is fully stocked with Jardin du Soleil signature items and so many new products you haveto see. We also are superexcited to welcome back Pacific Pantry, which will be serving handmade lavender sausages and other local dishes. Make sure to get to Thor early if you want to try some of Viking Feasts’ chocolate ice cream. Of course, he’ll have lavender ice cream, too, featuring local Dungeness Creamery

milk and Jardin du Soleil Royal Velvet lavender. Local beer, Finnriver cider and wine also will be served. This year we again have teamed up with Olympic Lavender to bring you more than 15 acres of Dungeness Lavender Festivities — which means two great farms for one admission. By starting your day at the Jardin du Soleil Lavender Festival and taking advantage of our free shuttle service running to the Sequim Farmers Market, other downtown events and Olympic Lavender every 30 minutes all weekend long, you can experience all that Sequim Lavender Weekend has to offer. We look forward to seeing you out on the farm!

LAVENDER CONNECTION 1141 Cays Road • 360-681-6055 • lavenderconnection.com

The Olson Family welcomes you to relax and spend a summer day with us! Our farm is open to the public Fridays through Mondays throughout the summer when lavender is in bloom (visit lavenderconnection. com for up-to-date hours) and is always free to visit, even during Sequim Lavender Weekend. Lavender Connection farm has 40 varieties of lavender to view — from

light pink to dark purple — with most available for U-cut, making for truly unique lavender bundles. Our farm property also offers exceptional photo opportunities of multi-colored lavender fields and our recently renovated historic barn. Visit our quaint store, located in the barn; our boutique products are handmade with lavender essential oil distilled from our own plants. Head to the copper still and watch as we distill the oil. Learn about the different uses and kinds of lavender we grow, then stop by the “Essential Oil Bar” to smell many varieties of lavender essential oil, all available for sale. Finally, visit our “perfumery,” where you can sample a variety of

different essential oils and fragrances, then use our lavender essential oil as a base to invent a lavender scent that is uniquely your own (available during Lavender Weekend only). We offer lawn games such as bocce ball and cornhole (for kids and adults), as well as benches and picnic tables throughout the property. We invite you to bring a picnic, a good book or just your camera, and stay all afternoon! Even your pets are welcome, as long as they are leashed. Finally, we encourage anyone with a military ID (including retired personnel) to visit and cut a free bouquet of lavender. See website for more details.

NELSON’S DUCK POND & LAVENDER FARM 73 Humble Hill Road • 360-681-7727 • nelsonsduckpond.com

More than 45 years ago, Harry and Gail Nelson purchased 40 acres of undeveloped land in Sequim with the dream of one day retiring there. Over the years they sold off parcels to put their five children through school, ending up with 5 acres of their own. In 1996, the Nelsons joined the Sequim Lavender Growers Association, and the family has been a member ever since. The youngest daughter, Amy Lundstrom, and her husband, Jeff, purchased the farm 10 years ago. On the farm they have more than 2,200 lavender plants of several varieties, mainly Grosso,

Provence, Super, Royal Velvet, Folgate, Pacific Blue and their newest variety, Phenominal, which might be available for U-pick, depending on the weather. As always, there is no admission fee. The farm features a lovely gift shop, “The Garden Shed,” where you can pick up all your gardening and lavender needs from lotions and potions to its famous lavender lemon poundcake, garlic lavender pepper and even lavender mocha fudge. Be sure to stop by Tilly’s Lemonade Stand, operated by their daughter Tilly, and purchase a glass of ice cold lavender lemonade. Proceeds during the Lavender Festival are

donated to the Sequim Food Bank. Jeff also will be sampling up many delights, highlighting all the farm’s spices. If you just want to sit back and relax, bring a blanket or sit at one of the tables and enjoy the quiet of the pond. When you’re out by the pond, you might spot Norman, our resident turtle who likes to sunbathe around the farm. Ever since Gail and Harry started the farm, all of their family has come back every year to help with the weekend. They’d like to thank all family, friends and neighbors for always being there to help them keep the farm running. If you can’t make it to the farm, stop by their

Meli’s Lavender was established by Monica and Sergio Gonzalez to help their daughter and son pay for college. The couple planted about 1,000 lavender plants in the winter of 2015 and have been working to grow the farm ever since. The farm has evolved into a family project and, throughout the year, they work to make it a better experience for visitors. During Sequim Lavender Weekend, visitors can visit our farm for U-pick activities or visit us at our Carrie Blake Park booth to purchase lavender plants, fresh bundles, wreaths and natural lavender products.

booth at the street fair and say hello to their oldest daughter, Livie, and her aunts, uncles and cousins. Nelson’s Duck Pond & Lavender Farm is the only second-generation lavender farm in Sequim. They strive to keep their family’s traditions going, and their dreams for expansion are great. Who knows, maybe someday they’ll be a third-generation lavender farm! You’re welcome to sit by the pond and read a book, wander through the lavender field or stroll through our gift shop. Bring a picnic and stay a while. “We hope to see you soon!”

Hours are Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the event is free, and free parking is offered at the entrance to Blake Avenure and at Fir Street and Brown Road. There is a shuttle that runs from these two parking lots to the park. Watch for signs coming off U.S. Highway 101 and directions to general parking and ADA parking. There is limited ADA parking at the Street Fair. Visitors need to be aware that some areas of the park are paved, but the park is mostly grass and gravel with uneven surfaces. Sequim Lavender Growers Association members will offer original and hand-created gifts and personal care items produced from their Sequim lavender harvest at their vendor booths. The imagination is limitless when it involves the ancient and modern uses of lavender — from hydrating oils, lotions and soaps, relaxing eye pillows, culinary ingredients and pet apparel to the beautifully prepared lavender bouquets and loose lavender buds. And, of course, unique and hard-to-locate lavender plants will be available at the Street Fair and the farms. This lavender-themed event consists of a high-end juried street fair made up of all types of artisans with a wide variety of techniques and products. Offerings include photography, fine art, pottery, metalwork, leatherwork, carvings, jewelry, fibers, glass, pet supplies and precious minerals and rocks. Artisans from throughout the country make the Sequim Lavender Festival one of their must-do seasonal events. The famous LavenderStock will take place at the James Center for the Performing Arts main stage and will feature opening ceremonies Friday and live music and entertainment all three days. On Saturday night, a Street Dance will be hosted in the park from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Black Diamond Junction will once again be rocking the free street dance. The Food Court should not be missed! A wonderful array of food is available to visiting foodies. Don’t miss the barbecue, fish and chips, six flavors of lavender ice cream, street tacos, Greek and Thai food, coffee, doughnuts, kettle corn, elephant ears and more. There are several returning favorites and a couple of new things to try! Admission is free. Located in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, Sequim lavender farms enjoy an ideal climate for growing lavender, making it “America’s Provence.” Farms are family owned and family friendly, inviting visitors from around the world to experience the beauty and fragrance of lavender. The Sequim Lavender Experience is a co-op of agritourism lavender farms and gift shops, working both independently and cooperatively in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Each Sequim Lavender

Experience farm reflects the unique vision and personality of its owners and the surrounding landscape. These destination farms are open to the public throughout the growing season, and many extend their hours well beyond the summer months. Each gift shop offers a diverse selection of handcrafted lavender products made with the finest essential oils in the valley. Whichever farms or shops you visit, you’ll enjoy beautiful fields of lavender and high-quality lavender products created by lavender professionals. The Sequim Lavender Experience invites visitors to experience the beauty of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley with its vast landscape of iconic lavender farms and gift shops.

Blake Ave. • Free admission The Sequim Lavender Festival celebrates its 23rd year in the heart of Sequim during the weekend of July 19-21. Solely produced and managed by the membergrowers of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association, the Sequim Lavender Festival will include activities and attractions to delight visitors of all ages. The Sequim Lavender Street Fair is located in Carrie Blake Community Park this year. This beautiful venue will host more than 150 crafts and lavender booths, a diverse food court, live music and more. This lavender-themed event consists of a highend juried street fair made up of all types of artisans with a wide variety of techniques and products. Offerings include photography, fine art, pottery, metalwork, leatherwork, carvings, jewelry, fibers, glass, pet supplies and precious minerals and rocks. Artisans from throughout the country make the Sequim Lavender Festival one of their must-do seasonal events. Local nonprofit groups also have been invited to participate with a free booth.

SEQUIM LAVENDER FESTIVAL AMBASSADORS

This year the Sequim Lavender Festival welcomes Melissa Murray, who has taken on the task of rounding up “Lavender Ambassadors” with enthusiasm. Also by her side, working effortlessly, is Kathy Powell. Thanks to both of them! The Lavender Ambassadors are always happy to let visitors know about our area, reflecting the charm and goodwill of Sequim and the surrounding valley. Many of the Lavender Ambassadors are family members from each of the

farms on tour, as well as from the Sequim Lavender Growers Association general membership. They are too numerous to list, but each one is a valuable member of the festival. Thanks goes out to the family members who come from near and far, always with a smile on their faces for this great event. Thanks also to the Sequim Visitors Center for all the help during this weekend and all year long. A huge thanks from the Sequim Lavender Growers Association

during the Sequim Lavender Festival Weekend. We could not do this event year after year without you. NONPROFITS The Sequim Lavender Growers Association is a nonprofit organization that takes pride in working with other nonprofits in the area. It is the backbone of the community and this event. I’m a creative who works in contemporary fine art photography. My creations are imaginative imagery, sometimes with humorous, darker viewpoints. My work directly responds to my surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. I also find inspiration from simply watching a movie or listening to music. Typically my process is to think of a story then go out and photograph each element. One completed image can contain two tot five images while other elaborate images can contain over 50 different photos. I wanted to do

The Sequim Lavender Growers Association (SLGA) are once again pleased to partner with the Sunbonnet Sue Club of Sequim for the 2019 festival. Each year they have donated a quilt to our organization. SLGA proudly hangs this quilt on our main stage each year, and then it will be raffled off the next year. All proceeds of the raffle sales go into a scholarship fund for a local student. This year SLGA is pleased to give away a scholarship to Fischer Jensen, who was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. SLGA is proud of her accomplishments and knows she will continue to shine at Western Washington University. The quilt design is a “One Block Wonder.” It is made from one fabric that is cut is strips, cross cut into segments that are then pieced together. A four-patch block is made from four pieces of

Sequim Lavender Weekend 2019 • 43

FOOD COURT Sequim Lavender Festival

Our food court is even bigger and better than last year! The Sequim Lavender Growers Association (SLGA) loves the returning food vendors and know that festival-goers look for them year after year. Due to popular demand, we’ve added more choices. Food vendors will be serving up lavender ice cream, Thai, Greek, barbecue and kettle corn. There will be plenty of seafood selections, including soups, fish and chips, crab cakes and salads, plus grilled hamburgers, garlic fries and corn dogs! New in 2019 are three more delicious food vendors: Sequim Valley Product’s Funnel Cakes, Pop’s Sausage Grill and Athena’s Mexican Food Truck.

The festival welcomes back the Cedars at Dungeness, who will be hosting the festival wine, beer and spirit garden. In addition to their usual tasty offerings, they will have lavender margaritas and lavender martinis. The garden is conveniently located near the food booths and the allday music on the James Center for the Performing Arts stage. Enjoy a glass of your favorite beverage while relaxing and listening to music. Back by popular demand will be lavender wine. We have teamed up with Hurricane Hills Winery, and they will be making lavender blackberry wine for tasting and purchasing. It is made from one SLGA farm’s culinary lavender. We look forward to seeing you at the Sequim Lavender Festival!
