Strawberry Festival: Be inspired at this island tradition Since 1909, Vashon’s Strawberry Festival has been a yearly tradition. This tradition has turned into an island showcase of our talents, the causes we support and three packed days of activities for islanders and visitors alike. Festival is a celebration of our history and our now. Vashon Island is home to many creative people: from musicians to artists, beverage makers and cupcake-bakers, to nonprofits who work diligently to enact change, and our entrepreneurs who do more than just make a living. Festival is a time to show off a little. This year, we’re proud to present an aerial arts performance, and more, featuring UMO School of Physical Arts. Professionals and their students will undoubtedly awe audiences with two Saturday performances at

Emerson and Zero Waste Vashon, festival-goers can use event recycling stations to drop off their recyclable materials to be sorted and cleaned properly. This is a radical step toward reducing trash. As far as we know, this is the first time a major festival has created an active recycling effort. We know it’s worth the effort,

Get set for festival: Join the parades
veryone loves a parade, and the Strawberry Festival features two of them, the grand parade on Saturday and the Classic Car Parade on Sunday. Children start off Saturday’s festivities with the kids’ parade, and the grand parade quickly follows with a host of longtime favorites — antique tractors, the Thriftway shopping cart drill team and the grand marshal traveling the parade route in a place of honor. Plenty of others join in: colorful floats, dancing troupes and the ukulele band, among them. The parade starts just past the south end of town and proceeds north, ending at Ober Park’s Park & Ride lot. Performance areas for parade participants will be in front of the Voice of Vashon Studio, the intersection of Bank Road and Vashon Highway, Pandora’s Box and in front of the Vashon Library. Floats and vehicles will park on the east side of Vashon Highway between 171st and Gorsuch Road for further viewing. The grand marshal will announce the winner of the Grand Marshal Choice

Award — the marshal’s favorite parade entry — at 1 p.m. at the Ober Park Stage. The winner will receive a trophy to display for the year. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20. Watch for the fire engine leading the way. And to prepare to lead the festivities, kids (with their parents or caregivers) should gather in front of the Methodist church in time to step off at 10:45 a.m.
On Sunday, the Tom Stewart Memorial Classic Car Parade will begin at 11:45 a.m. and will feature unique and vintage cars from across the Pacific Northwest. Once the parade ends, attendees will be treated to close-up views of the classic rides. The visual trip through automotive history will start at Vashon Center for the Arts. Drivers will head north on Vashon Highway through town, passing a stage in front of Island Queen, where they will be announced, then on to Bank Road. There, they will turn east (left) and turn left again onto 103rd (the street behind IGA). Then they will turn left onto 178th Street and pass in front of the post office. From there, they will head up 100th Avenue — in front of IGA back to Bank Road. After the parade, they will park on Vashon Highway between Bank and the street stage in front of Island Queen. The best viewing will be along Vashon Highway from Bank Road to the theater and at the four-way intersection in town. The parade is a memorial to the late businessman and owner of Misty Isle Farms, Tom Stewart.

Take part in Burby run/walk Museum to host ice cream social For the 39th year, the Bill Burby Inspirational 10K Run and 5K Run/ Walk will allow Strawberry Festival revelers a chance to stretch their legs and burn off the festival food calories. On the morning of Saturday, July 20, dozens of runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels will lace up their running shoes and take part in the event. The race begins in front of 4 Paws vet clinic at Gorsuch Road and Vashon Highway. The course follows paved country roads with some challenging hills along The Dilworth Loop. Check-in and registration begin at 7 a.m. and closes at 8:15 a.m. Day-of-race fees are $40 for adults and $25 for children. Fees go to support Vashon High School athletic teams and provide the annual Bill Burby Wellness Scholarship to a high school senior who has demonstrated a healthy lifestyle. The race is in honor of Bill Burby, a beloved teacher and coach at Vashon Island High School, who was dedicated to island youth sports and healthy life choices. Top finishers will receive gift cer-

The Heritage Museum will kick off Strawberry Festival on Friday with an ice cream social. Guests will be able to build their own sundaes in the museum’s backyard. There will also be barbecue available from Aeggy’s. Museum volunteers will offer lawn games, and live music will be provided by Kat Eggleston and the “Riverbend” bluegrass band with Chuck Roehm, Dick Gordon, Peter Larsen, Paul Colwell, Mike Witmer and Dave Lang. An island-centric silent auction, which started July 5, will close Friday evening at the ice cream social. Items are mostly island-related and include a cruise on
Quartermaster Harbor with island historian Bruce Haulman, a photographic portrait taken by noted photographer Rick Dahms and a multitude of items donated by island businesses. The social will meet
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Vashon Heritage Museum, 10105 Bank Road. Tickets are adults $10; families $25 and youth $5. They are available at the door, in advance at the museum or at the Vashon Bookshop.

Sportsmen will host pancake breakfast When you wake up for Strawberry Festival, you’ll want go to the Pancake Breakfast. This tradition starts out parade day right. But you can do it both mornings of festival weekend: 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday. The breakfast, held in the IGA parking lot, is hosted by the Sportsmen’s Club. The menu will be the same as in years past: pancakes, sausage patties, orange juice, milk, coffee, strawberries and other pancake fixings. Tickets are $5 for kids, $8 for seniors and $10 for adults.
Take in aerial arts show More than 30 students and teachers from the UMO School of Physical Arts will perform pieces inspired by the universe. The show will feature gymnastics and aerial routines, parkour, clowning and more. Students choreographed both shows. Performances will be from 1 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Ober Park Stage.
Festival kid zone: Head to Vashon Theatre The Bubble Fun Kids Zone follows in the great Vashon tradition of having a space for kids to run free and play. Contained within the Vashon Theatre parking lot, the Fun Zone will feature a bungee station, bouncy house, obstacle course, climbing wall, slide and a bubble attraction. Tickets are available for purchase at each attraction. For parents, a beverage garden will be open. The theater will show Disney’s live-action “The Lion King” throughout the weekend. Other enticements for children will be scattered around festival grounds, including a giant slide at the north end of town near the Chamber of Commerce office.
Village Green: Stop by hub for local art For the third year, the Village Green will be a hub of island art and artists. Gather Vashon will move its store to the green’s covered area and feature the work of several island artists. Additional local artists will set up their own booths around the perimeter of the park and offer their work for sale throughout the weekend. At right, artists and patrons mingle amid art in the green at last year’s festival.

Getting here: Ferry, bus and shuttle Ferries In addition to Washington State Ferries’ regular service to the island, the King County Water Taxi will provide extra service to Vashon on Saturday for the festival. Sailings will depart downtown Seattle every hour on the hour between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sailings will depart Vashon on the half hour between 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Shuttle service
Vashon Island’s population nearly triples during Strawberry Festival weekend, and organizers recommend taking advantage of the shuttle and Metro buses. Shuttle stops have signs, and visitors can wave the shuttle down if in a safe place for it to pull over. Accessible vehicles are available upon request. Please tell the shuttle driver, and they will request one at your stop. The north-end shuttle runs from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The shuttle will attempt to meet ferries, pick up passengers along the way and drop them off at Ober Park. Return trips pick up at Ober Park. The last shuttle leaving Ober Park back to the ferry will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The south-end shuttle runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. It
will meet arriving ferries and drop visitors at the Vashon Senior Center then proceed to Agren Park and back. Return passengers can catch the shuttle at the senior center on Bank Road or the Chevron station in town. The last shuttle leaving the senior center for the south-end ferry will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The cost for the shuttle is $2 each way per person. Children under age 5 are free. Please bring exact change.
Road closures Vashon Highway is closed through town during Strawberry Festival. Traffic is routed onto Cove Road, 107th Avenue, Bank Road, 103rd Avenue, 100th Avenue and 178th Street. 100th is for northbound traffic only, while 103rd is for southbound traffic. For a detour map, see vashonchamber.com.
Bus service The regular Saturday and Sunday Metro bus schedules will be in effect; however, on Saturday, Metro has added service and is providing extra Route 118 departures from the Vashon ferry terminal at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 12:45, 2:35 and 3:55 p.m. All buses will follow a detour around town. Times will vary slightly from the regular schedule. Get complete bus schedules online at kingcounty.gov/depts/transportation/ metro/schedules-maps.aspx.
Parking and permits Those who drive to town will find parking scarce, and many roads to town will be closed much of the weekend. A limited number of accessible parking permits will allow some to park closer to town. Call the chamber of commerce at 463-6217 to obtain one. Parking will be offered at the Island Funeral Services lot Saturday. All-day parking is $5 and benefits the Vashon Senior Center. Access to the parking lot will be via 100th Avenue. Head south on 100th Avenue at the four-way stop by the post office. The road ends, and cars must drive on grass to get to the lot. Follow the signs. Reserved parking is also available at the Vashon Presbyterian Church on Saturday only by donation. Money gathered will support Vashon Youth & Services. This year’s Strawberry Festival will include almost 60 music acts, filling five stages located at the festival’s beverage garden, Snapdragon, Pandora’s Box, Ober Park and a new street stage just across from Colvos Brewing. The heart and soul of the festival’s lineup is music by islanders, for islanders. From Publish the Quest to St. Ophelia to Portage Fill to The Free Range Folk Choir, Vashon’s vibrant music scene will be in full bloom on Strawberry Festival stages. While most of the Strawberry Festival music lineup is local, there are notable exceptions. General Mojo’s, a psych-rock band born out of Seattle’s house show scene, will play the beverage garden stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 19. Heels to the Hardwood, a rising Seattle Americana band, will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, in the beverage garden. The Spice, a Seattle band that fuses hip-hop and reggae, will play at 10:30 p.m. Friday on Snapdragon’s stage. Three more off-island bands, Spank Williams (bluegrass and country-western), Del Vox (rootsy garage band music) and Tin Foil Top Hat (pop) will play the festival’s new stage in the middle of the street, next to Colvos Brewing, in back-to-back shows starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 21. Other Seattle bands slated to strum and toot their horns at the festival include The Freams (blues, soul and rock) and Amigos Nobles (rhythm and blues and rock). In addition to all the music on festival stages, there will also be two shows presented at the Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi during the festival. Island Bound, a reggae ensemble from Tacoma and Seattle, will play at 8 p.m. Friday, July 19, at the Bike. Loose Change, a longtime island band, will take the Bike’s stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20. Both shows are for all ages until 11 p.m. and 21 and older after that. All the festival’s music stages are booked by Vashon Events, a local nonprofit helmed by Allison Shirk and Pete Welch. While Welch began assisting with the booking of Strawberry Festival stages in 2008, Vashon Events became the official musical curators of all the stages in 2011. “We hope the audience will support the music by listening enthusiastically, dancing when moved to do so and tipping the bands generously,” Welch said.
