Welcome to the 2019 Golden North Salmon Derby By DOUG LARSEN AND JERRY BURNETT The salmon are returning, and it’s time for the iconic family event of the Juneau summer — the 73nd annual Golden North Salmon Derby! The Territorial Sportsmen would like to invite you out on the water from August 16-18 for the chance to win more than $100,000 in cash and prizes contributed by our generous local contributors. But it’s not just about the money and prizes. By participating, you will be helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, which has provided more than $1.8 million in scholarships to Juneau area students since 1953. So how does this all work? First, you need to buy your derby ticket at one of our local vendors — Dehart’s in Auke Bay, Sportsman’s Warehouse or Juneau Mercantile and Armory in the Valley, Western Auto Marine in Lemon Creek, and Harri Plumbing and Heating or Foodland IGA Hardware downtown. The tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for kids ages 6-12. One ticket (plus alternates) will be drawn from all ticketholders, regardless of whether they fish or not, to be eligible to participate in the $46,000 High Five contest being sponsored by Bullwinkle’s Pizza. Once you have your ticket it must be validated by a Derby official before you can fish in the derby. Derby validations start at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, August 16th, and the validation is good for the entire event. Lists of validation stations and hours are included in this publication as well as on the Derby website, http://www. goldennorthsalmonderby.com. As you head out on the water, be sure to go slow and observe the no-wake safety zones in Douglas, Auke Bay and Amalga harbors. With the potential for more than 400 vessels and up to 2,000 people on the water over the weekend, we want to make your safety a priority. Please check the maps of the safety zones, be courteous to all boats that are around you, and don’t risk disqualification by going too fast. Once you are out at your favorite fishing hole, fish to your heart’s content while following all

appropriate Alaska Department of Fish and Game Regulations. Remember, each salmon that you turn in to the derby is sold to fund the scholarship program for the youth of Juneau! Because these fish are sold to a commercial processor, there are a few simple guidelines to follow: 1. All fish must be kept in the round. Do not gut or gill your fish. 2. Ice down your fish as soon as they are caught. Ice is provided throughout the derby at Amalga, Auke Bay and Douglas harbors and at several validation stations on Friday as well. 3. Keep your fish in first-class, bright condition by keeping them in a cooler that has a 2:1 mix of seawater to ice. When you have caught a particularly big fish, or if it is simply time to turn in your haul of fish for the day, head for one of the three weigh stations … where you now have a decision to make. If you think your fish might be in the running for one of the Top 73 prizes that are determined by weight, let the Derby official know that you would like to weigh your fish, and your fish will be officially entered in the derby. If you decide not to weigh your fish, you still have a chance to win by turning them in as scholarship fish. By doing so, you will be entered in a drawing for more than $5,000 in prizes, as well as the chance to win up to $50,000 in the High Five drawing sponsored by Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company and the Coeur Alaska Kensington Gold Mine. For more details on all prizes, be sure to read the prize sections in this publication carefully. Once again, Alaska Glacier Seafoods is providing a packer boat located in the South Shelter Island area that will be accepting only scholarship fish throughout the weekend. The packer is not a weigh-in station, but can be a convenient option to drop off your scholarship fish in order to keep them as fresh as possible and to avoid any congestion in the harbors. Announcements will be made over the marine radio on Channel 16 as to the location and availability of the vessel. Unofficial results for weighed fish will be

updated on the derby website each evening throughout the weekend. The results will be certified on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and all official results, including the winners of the scholarship fish drawings, will be posted to the website by Wednesday, Aug. 21. All prizes will be given out at awards night on Thursday, Aug. 22 at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall, starting at 7 p.m. The Golden North Salmon Derby is an annual

tradition that has been the backdrop for building family memories for 73 years. Whether you have fished the derby for decades, or if this will be your first time out on the water, we hope that you will join us in this important fundraiser for the youth of Juneau. See you on the water! Doug Larsen & Jerry Burnett Derby Co-Chairs

AWARDS NIGHT Derby prizes will be awarded beginning at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22, at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall. Winners or designated representatives must attend awards night, and must present their entry and weigh-in ticket stubs in order to claim their prizes. The official list of all prize winners will be available on the salmon derby website at http://www.goldennorthsalmonderby.com on Wednesday, Aug 21. Winners of the Scholarship Fund and Special prizes must show their scholarship fish ticket to claim their prize from Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. on awards night.

THE TOP 73 PRIZES! The first 73 contestants catching the largest salmon will have their choice of any one of the prizes except the first prize, which goes to the largest fish, and prize number 73, is reserved for the person catching the 73rd top weight. With the exception of the 1st and 73rd place prizes, the 2nd place finisher gets his or her choice of any remaining prize, then the 3rd place winner and so forth, until all prizes are claimed. Only one of the top 73 prizes will be awarded to each contestant. In case of a tie, the earliest entered weighed fish will receive the highest standing. If winners or their designated representative are not present on awards night to claim prizes, unclaimed prizes will revert to the derby committee.

Currently, there are 11 students active in our program. The TSSF, Inc. Board Members are Gary Hedges, President; Brita Rice, SecretaryTreasurer; Jerry Burnett, Trustee; Trevor Larsen, Trustee; and Jack Manning, Trustee. Funding for the scholarship program comes primarily from two sources: the net sales of salmon donated through Territorial Sportsmen’s annual Golden North Salmon Derby and the return on investments in the Foundation’s endowment fund. Participants in the 2014 derby donated salmon worth $20,511; we also received an additional $10,000 from Territorial Sportsmen, Inc, and $100 gift in memory of Charlie Robinson. Derby proceeds from the 2015 derby were $21,856.55 and $24,008 in 2016. In 2017, we received two donations in addition to the Salmon Derby receipts of $31,750.60. Randy Hurtte, owner of Stellar Financial Services, donated $250 directly to the scholarship fund. An anonymous donation of $15,000 was also received, for a total of $47,000.60. In 2018, Derby receipts were $28,064 and the Scholarship Foundation also received a second donation of $250 from Stellar Financial Services. SPECIAL PRIZES

except for the page of the organization’s minutes reporting that the [Territorial] Sportsmen discussed plans for holding a summer derby “at the Tee Harbor and Point Bishop, or thereabouts” to take place “during the summer months with prizes awarded,” no other records exist specifying that a derby actually took place that year. At the time, summer derbies were a common occurrence in the Juneau area. They usually consisted of weekend and holiday outings organized by friends and neighbors, most of which took place in the area of Marmion Island, located at the southeastern end of Douglas Island. In any case, by 1947 the Territorial Sportsmen were planning their first officially sponsored derby. They initially discussed sponsoring two – one to take place at either Marmion Island or Point Bishop, and a second later in the season at Tee Harbor. Eventually plans evolved as part of the American Association Outdoor Writers Convention. The Daily Alaska Empire reported that the group would include 50 nationally known wildlife photographers, newspaper columnists, magazine and book writers, and representatives from the game departments of several states. They were scheduled to arrive in Juneau via a flotilla of small boats on August 26. The ensuing plans soon took on all the appearances of a contemporary media event with the Territorial Sportsmen’s first president, Milo G. Clouse, actively promoting the efforts by speaking to local organizations and receiving extended newspaper coverage. Clouse looked upon the derby as an opportunity to establish Juneau as the greatest tourist and sports center in Alaska. He predicted that the derby would grow into the largest and most important event in the Territory and hoped that a log clubhouse would be built from some of the proceeds. Beginning with the first official derby, [the Territorial] Sportsmen published brochures outlining

THE FIRST GOLDEN NORTH SALMON DERBY Written years ago by Karleen Alstead Grummett

It was during the period of reconstruction following World War II that the idea for sponsoring a salmon derby first became a goal of the Territorial Sportsmen, Inc., who had incorporated on August 15, 1945. According to charter member Wayne Johnson, the Derby was initially formed to fund the organization’s deer feeding program for the purpose of protecting subsistence deer hunting. The new fund raiser was called the Salmon Derby, scheduled for only one day and destined to be interrupted by equinoxal storm. Larry Parker, former Juneau mayor, remembers the first derby taking place in 1946. However,

derby rules and other associated information. Inexplicably, the first one listed the derby as sponsored by the Juneau Sportsmen Association. It is not clear why this was done, although a sportsmen’s group with the same name existed before the War, and some Territorial Sportsmen favored changing the organization’s name to Juneau Sportsmen. In any case, all future derby pamphlets carried the official organization name, [Territorial Sportsmen, Inc.]. The official derby name was coined in 1948 by Territorial Sportsmen Larry Parker and Jack Glover. Parker ran an offset printing press and engraving business in a shop he shared with Glover, a commercial artist. Parker had recently worked on a fireworks display for a Fairbanks celebration using the word “Golden” in their official name. After Glover noted that the derby was probably the farthest north in the world, Parker said the two then put their observations together to create the Golden North Salmon Derby name, which they first used in their “Golden North Sport and Travel News” advertising brochure, a forerunner to the present “Derby News.” By August, regulations were issued by the Derby Rules Committee comprised of representatives from area service clubs, including Larry Parker, Kiwanis; Rod Darnell and E. L. Keithahn, Rotary; Milo Clouse, Lions; Mrs. Dean Goodwin, Business and Professional Women; Mrs. Norma Johnson, Soroptimist; Fred Henning, Juneau Merchants Association; Henry M. Hogue, Territorial Sportsmen, and Homer Nordling, American Legion. Rules specified the age limit for derby contestants as ten years, and ages 10 to 16 were required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Women and youth could receive help in landing fish, although this rule changed in 1949 to specify that anyone could receive assistance in gaffing fish after they were played to the side of a boat. All boats were required to include at least two registered occupants and official starting and warning signals would sound near the judges’ floats. Thirty items comprised the first prize list, which included a 1947 Plymouth “Deluxe” automobile, and a boat and outboard motor. These two prizes would hold the traditional first and second award slots for many years. The two largest king salmon would be awarded first and second prize, with other prizes awarded among other species. Although a number of prizes were donated by state sporting goods manufacturers, as today, local merchants donated most of the prizes consisting then primarily of rods, reels, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear. All items were displayed in the Alaska Electric Light and Power office window across from the Baranof Hotel, and award ceremonies were scheduled for the Juneau

Sportsmen made some rule changes. Starting time was moved to 8:00 am and boat owners were advised of possible inspections by Coast Guard officials. Small craft were required to carry red flags for emergency use and larger boats would display white flags for warning boaters to end fishing and return to shore by 4:00 pm. Entrants were given numbers to facilitate fish weigh-in. [Territorial] Sportsmen also moved the official Auke Bay float location from Auke Bay Recreation Area to Jim Hickey’s float in Auke Bay, and added another station at the Auke Bay Forest Service float. The second derby attempt succeeded. Richard Peter of KINY Radio, with the assistance of Andy Thorgaard, planned to broadcast derby news from and Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose aircraft and Bob Druxman was to give unofficial derby results from Auke Bay during their daily five o’clock newscast. On September 7, they reported that Dick Harris had won the first Golden North Salmon Derby with a 38 pound, 4-ounce salmon. ABOVE: 2017 Golden North Salmon Derby

ballpark, which was then located where the Federal Building now stands. [Territorial] Sportsmen also served as boat brokers, matching people with available boat space. At the time, cruisers and sport boats were not as prevalent as today and entrants fished primarily from small open skiffs, commercial halibut boats, or from vessels belonging to the Alaska-Juneau Gold Mine. [Territorial] Sportsmen expected 200 boats to compete for the estimated $4,500 in prizes. Juneau’s Daily Alaska Empire proclaimed that boat whistles would “reverberate throughout the area to signal the opening and closing of the derby,” and a warning signal would allow fishermen to reach weigh-in stations before the 6:00 pm deadline. Floats were to be anchored off Tee Harbor and Auke Bay Recreation Area, where the Soroptimist and Business and Professional Women’s clubs planned a picnic barbecue free for all derby contestants. Even the Mendenhall Bar had been dredged, allowing a four-foot clearance at a 15-foot tide. The Coast Guard offered two boats to patrol the derby, but also requested assistance from all boat owners. Meanwhile, Milo Clouse was arranging for a fleet of eight vessels, including the Monterey, a 110-foot yacht skippered by Jack Westfall, and three Fish and Wildlife Service and Forest Service boats, to meet the Outdoor Writers when they arrived in Ketchikan and escort them through the Inside Passage to Juneau. Unfortunately, fog and icebergs in the steamer channel delayed the writers’ departure from Petersburg and all local welcoming festivities were

PAGE 11

postponed. When it did occur a day later on August 31, the derby was suspended by high winds and rough water. Larger vessels and the Coast Guard were kept busy until late into the night helping small boats back to port. Former board member Dean Williams remembered that he and his partner had salmon on their lines when the halibut boat came alongside to tell them GOOD LUCK, ANGLERS! the derby was over. “We didn’t want to quit,” We’re all winning because Williams said, “but they every derby entry supports hoisted us, the fish and scholarships for Alaska kids. the whole works onto the deck.” The derby was rescheduled for the following Sunday and fish already turned in would qualify for prizes. Unfortunately, members of the Outdoor Writers had to leave town as scheduled. Before the rescheduled derby took place, [Territorial] heclagreenscreek.com

2019 DERBY VOLUNTEER DEDICATION Kami Bartness is no newcomer to the Golden North Salmon Derby. Growing up in Juneau, she was introduced to it at a very young age by her fishing enthusiast father, Ole. Ole and Kami’s mother, Sandy, had a fishing charter business for years, and several of their clients fished and placed among the derby prize winners. Kami, for her part, helped out as a deck hand on her parents’ boat, the 37 foot M/V Islander, and though she never placed among the derby prize winners, Kami was on the derby grounds beginning when she was a toddler of two or three. According to Kami, her five years of crewing was “the best job I ever had!” For a time, the M/V Islander was the boat sponsored during the derby by KINY Radio and took to the derby grounds with past derby legends like Dick Garrison and Rudy Pusich. Kami Bartness remembers them well. As for her family’s success in the derby, Kami Bartness is proud to point out that her son, Erik, placed among the prize winners twice, with 20.5 lb and 21.0 lb cohos. “He even got a trophy” she proudly quips. Kami Bartness’s dad was among the first recipients of the Territorial Sportsmen’s scholarships, receiving one in 1956. That scholarship allowed Ole to go to college, obtain a degree in engineering, return to Juneau and fulfill a full and productive career in his home town. Kami Bartness realizes that her grandparents couldn’t have afforded the college tuition back in the day, which is why she is so appreciative of TSI and why she has volunteered so much time and energy to the organization and its mission over the past two decades. It’s Golden North Derby time in Juneau. Stop by the Juneau or Auke Bay marina and stock up on bait and – of course – high-quality Petro Marine fuel. You want everything to be just right out there.

docks under the tutelage of Mary Pegues. Two years later, as Mary and other longtime volunteers took well-deserved “retirements” from the event, Kami Bartness stepped up to oversee the organization and logistics of the Douglas, Auke Bay and Amalga dock crews and she began her tenure as the lead at the Auke Bay dock. Besides her commitment to the derby, Kami Bartness stepped up to serve 12 years on TSI’s board of directors. She also served for several years on TSI’s scholarship committee. Now, with a scant year and a half left before she can retire from her State job, Kami Bartness recently mentioned that she may be interested in getting back on the board. This is incredibly great news for the organization and our community! When asked what she enjoys most about her involvement in the derby, Kami says unequivocally that she has fully fallen in love with the event. “It’s something I look forward to every year,” she says. “I love the friendly competition and good natured jabs among derby anglers,” she adds. Furthermore, she loves seeing and interacting with friends and new acquaintances each year. “There’s a group of guys who have shown up to be the first to get validated at Auke Bay for several years now. I love seeing them come, and I love how they step up and help me make coffee and attend to last minute preparations.” While serving on TSI’s scholarship committee, Kami Bartness found herself impressed by the enthusiasm, positive attitudes and drive of many of the high school applicants. “It gave me faith in the future of our state,” Kami reflects. “In a time where there is so much in the news about youth and drugs, it was inspiring to see young people with their heads on straight, with goals for their futures and a desire to contribute back to their roots.” Kami has been impressed by the number of scholarship winners who have returned to Juneau after obtaining their higher education and become contributing members of our society. “It’s heartwarming,” Kami reflects. Over the years, Kami has witnessed some funny incidents during the 3-day derby event. “Eight to Ten years ago, when we were still using the old ramp at Statter Harbor, I watched a guy and his wife launch their boat,” Kami remembers. “The guy had his wife back the trailer down the ramp, thinking it would be great practice. Well, things got ugly pretty quick! The wife lost control, the trailer jackknifed, and the boat went flying off the trailer. Thankfully, it actually ended up in the water, though it was offshore floating away, with the husband yelling at his wife and the wife crying like a baby.” Kami’s advice? “Don’t use derby weekend as the time to teach or practice trailer backing!” Besides the trailer incident, Kami Bartness recalls at least 3 times when anglers dropped nice, award-placing fish in the water while attempting to hand them off to dock volunteers. “It’s a sick feeling for both the angler and the dock worker to see a 20+ lb salmon drop between the dock and the unloading boat,” Kami says. Her recommendation? “Be sure the dock volunteer has a GOOD STRONG hold of your fish before letting go!” And then there’s the 58 foot M/V Endurance II, owned and operated by derby co-chair, Jerry Burnett. “When that monster comes into sight of our dock,” Kami says matter of factly, “I feel tremendously intimidated, and I tell dock workers and bystanders alike to brace themselves!” Thankfully, Jerry has always managed to dock his boat safely, without damage or injury to people or facilities! And beyond the derby and her impending retirement? Well, Kami is engaged to be married next May 16 in Juneau. Kami, her fiancé Gerald Grant and several family and friends will cruise from San Francisco to Juneau, get off the cruise ship for the wedding ceremony and then reboard the ship to continue on to Skagway and back to San Francisco.

Andrew Dilley (4-year scholarship) has always been a fisherman, too young to remember when he caught his first fish. Since then, he has won prizes in the Golden North Salmon Derby, become a hunter, trapper and archer. Dilley was a member of Thunder Mountain High School’s basketball and track and field teams. He plans to attend college at UA Southeast, majoring in marine biology. He will attend a fifth year and earn his Master of Arts in teaching. He hopes to teach in the Juneau School District during winters and captain a charter boat in the summer

Jacob Hammer was awarded $2,800. Jacob just graduated from Wrangell High School. He is commercial fishing this summer and will attend a 4-month electrical lineman’s course at the Northwest Lineman College in Idaho beginning in October. He boats the Stikine River and supports Ducks Unlimited.

Katrina Buchanan

Katrina Buchanan was awarded $2,500 for her final term to become a paramedic. She is training with UAF and is in Austin, Texas this summer for the externship portion of her training. She will be working with experienced paramedics and will return to Alaska to take statewide and national license tests. She plans to continue working at the UAF fire department, then apply to Capital City Fire and Rescue or explore wildland firefighting options available in Alaska.

Michael Fair

Dalton Hoy

Dalton Hoy (4 year scholarship) is a selfdescribed ‘fishing and hunting …guy.’ This summer he is working as a deck hand on a charter boat. Dalton pays attention to the use, sometimes heavy use and sometimes overuse, of natural resources where he works and plays. He and his family enjoy the Forest Service public cabins in the Juneau area. As a child, he picked up 77 Junior Ranger badges from visits to U.S. national parks. Name a high school activity, from Student Symphony to ice hockey, and note that Hoy likely took part in the activity. He plans to attend UA Fairbanks and will major in structural engineering.

Michael Fair was awarded $1,000 to assist with getting all the credentials necessary for a career change. He has been a stay-at-home dad since June 2017, living in Sitka since then, and wants to work as a fly fishing guide, and assistant hunting guide and a commercial fisherman. He is presently logging hours for his 100-ton captain’s license. He is hoping to remain the stay-at-home parent of his children by earning a living this way. Before that, he worked as a public school principal in both California and Hawaii for short periods of time. He is involved with Stand for Salmon and the Sitka Conservation Society.

Nikki Box

Nikki Box (4-year scholarship) will attend the University of Montana, majoring in wildlife biology. She plans to return to Juneau and earn her Masters in fisheries from the University of Alaska, Juneau campus, taking courses on ocean acidification and climate change. Her long-term goal is to become a Fish and Wildlife trooper. Box has worked as a deckhand on her family’s commercial fishing boat but this year works for Fish and Game as a Fish and Wildlife technician. This job has taken her to the Taku River to work at a fish wheel, lakes sampling stocked rainbow trout and cutthroat study on Prince of Wales Island.
