ABERDEEN BOBCATS League: Evergreen 2A • Head Coach: Todd Bridge • Colors: Blue & Gold 2018 Record: 1-8 • Five-Year Record: 10-35 • Stadium: Stewart Field State Titles (Since 1973): None By Rick Anderson For the GH News Group

Stylistically, at least, Aberdeen football will have a new look in 2019. First-year Bobcat head coach Todd Bridge has installed variations of the double-wing offense he used to win a couple of Pacific 2B League championships during a six-year stint at North Beach. Veteran coach Hugh Wyatt, who assisted Bridge at North Beach and has conducted numerous clinics and produced videos on the tightly compressed offense, has joined the AHS staff. Coming off a 1-8 season and shy on experience, the Bobcats won’t be ranked among the favorites in the top-heavy Evergreen 2A Conference. With members of Miller Junior High’s unbeaten 2018 club entering the varsity pipeline, Bridge doesn’t dispute the contention that this season could be the first installment in a longerterm process. But the Bobcats coach is already impressed with the progress he has witnessed in preseason drills. “From what I’ve seen in June and July, the kids’ dedication to learn our

New Aberdeen head coach Todd Bridge

system couldn’t be better,” he said. The Bobcats lack the size to overpower many foes. Bridge, however, doesn’t believe that’s an essential component of the double-wing. “You don’t have to be big, strong bruisers in this type of offense, although it helps,” the Aberdeen coach observed. “You have to be quick, smart and committed to the program.” Senior tailback Morgun Morrow, a strong inside rusher, and junior wingback Connar Sherman, more of slashing-type

speedster, figure to handle a good share of the ball-carrying in the run-oriented attack. The fullback job is up for grabs, with seniors Logan Vasquez and Kole Lewin and junior Garrett Springer in the mix. Eli Brown, an impressive 225-pound freshman, could also fit into the backfield picture. Cody Bemis, a senior who began last season as a wide receiver but eventually converted to quarterback, will likely call signals this year. Josh Fritts, a 230-pound senior, returns at center. He’ll be flanked by senior Dylan Richie and junior Jaden Hoseney at the guards and senior Payton Woodland and sophomore Liam Heikkila at the tackle slots. Junior Tydus Morrow is the projected starter at tight end, with junior Austin Neeley at a wide receiver. Senior placekicker Gio Pisani earned all-conference honorable mention recognition last year. Limiting big plays, an Aberdeen bugaboo in recent years, is perhaps the top defensive priority. “We’ve got to play

very disciplined, assignment-oriented football on the defensive side,” Bridge stressed, Although the defensive lineup is somewhat unsettled, potential starters include Fritts, Hoseney, Heikkila and Tydus Morrow up front, Woodland, Springer, Richie, Brown and Sherman at linebackers. Morgun Morrow and junior Jeremy Roberts are projected for two of the secondary spots. Aside from Wyatt, the bulk of Bridge’s assistants are holdovers from last year’s AHS staff. They include Joe Fagerstedt, Cory Martinsen, David Tarrence, Gage Martell and Zach Carpenter. Although Black Hills ended Tumwater’s long league-title reign last year, Bridge projects the traditionally powerful T-Birds as the team to beat in the Evergreen 2A Conference. Black Hills and W.F. West of Chehalis (coached by Elma alum Danny Hill) rank as other contenders.

ELMA EAGLES League: Evergreen 1A • Head Coach: Ron Clark • Colors: Blue & White 2018 Record: 8-3 • Five-Year Record: 22-27 • Stadium: Davis Field State Titles (Since 1973): 1997 & 2001 (Class 2A) By Hasani Grayson Grays Harbor News Group

With the return of their quarterback and an experienced defense, Elma is looking to make another run to the postseason in its 2019 campaign. The Eagles’ 2018 season came to end with a 40-21 loss to Meridian in the first round of the state playoffs, but head coach Ron Clark thinks he’s got a solid foundation of players to build on going forward. “They seem to be athletic, they can move and their fairly fit. They move fast and they’re experienced,” he said. Cody Vollan will resume duties as signal caller this season after he helped to lead his team to the state playoffs for the first time since 2001. Vollan’s speed and athleticism was a big part of Elma’s offensive approach last season and the same looks to be the case this season. However, in addition to using his legs, Vollan will be asked to use his arm a bit more this season as the Eagles plan to use screen passes and quickly-developing passing routes to get the ball out of the quarterback’s hands before the defense can react. Clark is happy to have last year’s starting quarterback returning to the field, but he will have to make due without last year’s leading rusher, Taitum Brumfield, who graduated after last season. Clark said this season will see more ball carriers getting chances to make plays.

Elma head coach Ron Clark

“We relied on Tatum. Tatum pounded it,” he said. “The ball will be will be distributed more evenly amongst all our running backs, receivers and quarterback.” Vollan’s efforts in the rushing game will be aided by running backs Brady Shriver and Mikia Diacon along with occasional carries from wide receiver Tysen Richardson in Elma’s wing-T offense. Elma’s offensive line will feature fresh faces with all five blockers starting for the first time on varsity. Clark said the instincts of his new linemen will allow them to gel quickly, with hungry young players waiting to see the field at those positions if the starters need any extra motivation. “We have five new starters on the line this year, but they will come together. We’ve got some really good looking sophomores behind them and that’ll help them come together faster.” Special teams is seeing a

minor shake up this season as well. The graduation of linemen and kicker AJ Hernandez left a void that will be filled by Rodrigo Luna at place kicker. Luna kicked extra points occasionally last season and showed off his accuracy from long range, hitting a 40-yard field goal in a junior varsity game. “We have hopes for Luna. We’ve been blessed with kickers the last few years, so I hope we keep that going,” Clark said. “We have some young soccer players out here that I think might be able to turn into punters and kickers.” In addition to his increased role in the offense, Richardson will be continuing his punting duties for the fourth season. Richardson has been punting the ball to a handful of players who are all competing to be the primary return man as that position is still up for grabs. On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles will be

going with a 4-2-5 defensive scheme after employing it for the first time last season. As opposed to the 4-4 defensive front employed by many high school teams, the two outside linebackers take on different coverage responsibilities. Defensive coordinator Larry Raynes said the players are picking up the defensive concepts more quickly this season after running the 4-2-5 last year. “Their knowledge of the defense was good,” he said. “This is the second year we’re running the same defense so they were much more knowledgeable coming in, didn’t have to learn as much. Speed is important on defense for me, so that was really good to see.” The defense will be a bit shorthanded to start the season as all-league linebacker Jesus Torres recovers from a surgery he underwent in the offseason. The coaching staff is hoping to have him back by Week 3 of the season.

HOQUIAM GRIZZLIES League: Evergreen 1A • Head Coach: Jeremy McMillan Colors: Crimson & Grey • 2018 Record: 10-1 • Five-year Record: 33-16 Stadium: Olympic Stadium • State Titles (Since 1973): 0 By Hasani Grayson Grays Harbor News Group

Hoquiam is hoping a slew of talented returners will put them on a path to compete for a state title and is hoping for a starting quarterback to emerge early in the season. The graduation of last year’s signal caller Payton Quintanilla has opened up an opportunity for Dane McMillan and Cayden Kempf to compete for the position. Rayyon Dayton, who took most of his offensive snaps at wide receiver last year, is also being c o n s i d e re d f o r t h e quarterback position. Whichever one of the trio ends up lining up under center this season will still likely be featured heavily in the offensive at a different position. Hoquiam head coach Jeremy McMillan said he is feeling confident about the players he has at all 22 positions on the field. “They’re pretty experienced with what we’ve been doing and we’ve been able to add a few things with some wrinkles here and there,” he said. “They have a lot of

fun playing football so we’ll go as far as the kids let us.” The quarterback position is still up in the air but the offensive strategy will look similar to last year’s regardless of the quarterback. Coach McMillan estimates that the 2018 Grizzlies ran the ball about 53 percent of the time, presenting one of the more balanced attacks in the league. Quintanilla used his athleticism to lead the rushing attack last year with 587 yards while Matt

Brown averaged 5.7 yards a carry and picked up 358 yards last season with 11 touchdowns. Dane McMillan may be throwing the ball this year but did well catching it last season with a teamleading 475 yards as a sophomore. On the defensive side of the ball, Brown led the team in tackling from the linebacker position with 101 and tacked on 3.5 sacks. Hoquiam will also benefit from the return of Cameron Bumstead at cornerback who tied for second on the team with four picks last season. Coach McMillan said he plans to run a 3-3 defensive front with some variations to keep opposing offenses honest. “You have to be able to run what fits your style of kids and whatever athletes you have,” he said. “We have a lot of linebackers . That’s why we run that 3-3-5 and different variations of that.” Along with the individual talent that has the coaching staff excited, McMillan also said he’s looking forward to a group that has shown good chemistry during the

offseason. “I like what the team has. They have a lot of energy and they’ve done a lot over the summer. They’ve been playing together for a long time,” he said. “Every team every year is a different identity and I like the direction the kids are heading in.” Hoquiam was part of a league that featured stiff competition at the top of the standings with three teams competing for the 1A Evergreen title late in the season. Coach McMillan hopes to go undefeated in league play in this year but he doesn’t expect it to be easy. “The Evergreen league is going to be tough, as it was last year, With the new head coach at Forks and Carry (Nagel) getting it going at Tenino. The Grays Harbor teams are doing a great job between Elma Montesano, and ourselves so I like where the league is at.”

MONTESANO BULLDOGS League: 1A Evergreen • Head Coach: Terry Jensen • Colors: Maroon & Grey 2018 Record: 8-3 • Five-Year Record: 45-12 • Stadium: Jack Rottle Field State Titles (Since 1973): 1983, 1994 & 2012 By Rick Anderson For the GH News Group

All things considered, coach Terry Jensen was pleased with Montesano’s 2018 football season. He’s even happier that eight starters from that team are returning this season. Monte’s 2018 resume — an 8-3 record, second place in the Evergreen 1A League and a 13th consecutive state playoff appearance — was relatively modest by recent school standards. But the Bulldogs had only three senior starters on last year’s roster. “Last year, we didn’t know what to expect, we didn’t know whether we’d even make the playoffs,” Jensen recalled. “I think we were overachievers.” But with most of that club back, the veteran Bulldog coach makes little effort to hide his optimism. “We’re bigger, faster and stronger than last year and now we have some experience,” he said. “I think we have some depth that we lacked last year and that creates some competition at some positions.” The Bulldogs open their season Sept. 6 with a home non-leaguer against Aberdeen. To be sure, the three

Head coach Terry Jensen

graduating starters will be missed. Running back/ defensive back Teegan Zillyett, quarterback/linebacker Shaydon Farmer and lineman Kai Olson all earned all-league recognition on both sides of the ball. To replace leading rusher Zillyett, the Bulldogs may resort to a running back-by-committee formula. Senior fullback Brent Hollatz, senior wingback (or Z back, in Monte’s parlance) Sam Winter and speedy junior halfback Aydan Darst will divide the majority of carries, with sophomore Isaiah Pierce and junior Kasen Willis-Werner also on hand. “All three have (different) strengths,” Jensen noted. “I think we have more weapons, but it isn’t like (last year), when it was third-and-1 and

we were going to give the ball to Teegan Zillyett.” Trace Ridgway, a 6-foot2, 202-pound junior who succeeds Farmer at quarterback, will also contribute to the running game. “He is a mobile quarterback.” Jensen said. “He’s just going to need game experience. He’s definitely a threat running the football.” When Ridgway takes to the air, all-league receiver Winter and senior wideout Braden Dohrmann figure to be his favorite targets. Senior Jordan King is the probable starter at tight end. Three-year starter Tanner Nicklas and 306-pound sophomore Kenny Koonrad will likely open up front. The other offensive line positions are up for grabs, with seniors Kodi Hunley, Eion Gallington and Eli Wilson and juniors Jack Anderson, Cayleb Reninger, Stephen Rademacher, Justin Arndt, Josh Corbett, Dayton Holmstrom and Brandon Cilk in the running. Defensively, Jensen is hopeful the Bulldogs will rectify last year’s struggles to match up with physical teams and an occasional inability to contain mobile quarterbacks. The defensive unit will be led by returning all-leaguers Hollatz, at linebacker, and

Winter, at outside linebacker. Defensive end Ridgway, nose guard Nicklas, linebacker King, outside linebacker Darst, cornerback Dohrmann and free safety Colby Adams are the other returning starters. Competition at some defensive positions could be fierce. For example, Jensen said that Pierce, Cole Daniels, Jaeger Didion, Malaki Osbekoff and Hunter Schnoor are locked in a tight battle for one linebacking job. Koonrad, Cilk, Gallington, Reninger, Willis-Werner, Connor Hollatz, Alex Mesquita, Aaron Lano, Lucas Salstrom and Isaac Pierce are others who figure to see action defensively. Nicklas is a returning all-league punter. Jensen sees Elma and defending champion Hoquiam as his team’s chief competition in the Evergreen 1A League. Assistant coaches Brian Hollatz, Jeff Klinger, Brad Pocklington, Rob King, Eric Stanfield, Ken Waber and Ryan Wilson round out Monte’s experienced high school staff.

NORTH BEACH HYAKS League: Pacific 2B - Coastal • Head Coach: Jamie Moodenbaugh • Colors: Black, White & Gold • 2018 Record: 0-9 • Five-Year Record: 25-24 Stadium: Lt. Jim Davis Field • State Titles (Since 1973): None By Scott Johnston For the GH News Group

Call them the “Hungry, Hungry Hyaks.” The North Beach High squad and new head coach Jamie Moodenbaugh are determined to make the 2019 season the year the team turns things around. After building to a Pacific 2B league power under former coach Todd Bridge (a Don James player who is now at the helm in Aberdeen), the Hyaks went 2-7 in 2017 and were winless last year, with Moodenbaugh being the Hyaks’ third rookie head coach in three years. A 1990 Wishkah Valley graduate with BA and MA degrees from Central Washington, he was defensive coordinator at Montesano HS for eight years, then took a break from coaching to watch his two sons participate in sports at Hoquiam. A rare combination of a coach who is also an art teacher, the 47-year-old Moodenbaugh spent the last four years supporting the development of 6-12 program in Napavine and working the varsity staff in that district. The Hyaks will run “a spread offense, with some wing-T touches,” and a

little play action from senior QB/RB Garrett Armbruster and sophomore QB Matt Roland. “Garrett has really shown some leadership,” Moodenbaugh said. “(He is) hungry to play, asks a lot of questions … wants to get better every day.” The coach credits Roland and senior lineman Matt Smith, “a great leader,” as the two Hyaks who spent nearly every day all summer

in the weight room. A small but quick defense (only two linemen are over 200 lbs.) will run a 3-5 scheme. Moodenbaugh said three more players to watch are sophomore lineman Josh Armstrong, who is one of the building blocks of the program according to Moodenbaugh, junior lineman Takwitaano Estavillo, who as the new coach puts it has a “great personality in

the locker room,” and sophomore TE/SS, Westin Fruh, who the coach dubbed a “manchild.” Moodenbaugh and new staff feel four wins is an achievable goal this season. Though admittedly the Hyaks realize it is a rebuilding year, Moodenbaugh said his players are entering the season believing in what they are doing. “These kids see it very positive,” he said. “They’re lifting each other up and buying into a structured program that is going to hold them accountable.”

PE ELL-WILLAPA VALLEY TITANS

League: Pacific 2B - Coastal • Head Coach: Josh Fluke • Colors: Red, White & Blue • 2018 Record: 9-3, 6-0 • Five-Year Record: 46-13 • Stadium: Crogstad Field (Willapa Valley) & Trojan Field (Pe Ell) • State Titles (Since 1973): 1983, 1994 & 2012 By Hasani Grayson Grays Harbor News Group

With three key players coming back for the 2019 campaign, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley is ready to make another run to the state playoffs. The Titans had their 2018 season ended with a 35-26 loss to Northwest Christian in the opening round of the state playoffs. PWV held a 20-7 lead at halftime but surrendered 21 points in the third quarter in what ended up being their final game of the season. If the Titans take that next step this season it will likely be due to the play of their returning seniors. Quarterback Logan Walker will be under center again this season after taking over the starting role last season when Matt Pearson went down with an injury in the season opener. Walker threw 11 touchdowns in 11 games in PWV’s run-heavy offense last season. Titans head coach Josh Fluke said the injuries at quarterback and other key

Head coach Josh Fluke

positions last year helped younger players gain experience that could be beneficial this year. “We were plagued with injuries bad. At one point we were down six starters by mid-season,” he said. “We got a few of the younger kids to play and they did really well the rest of the season. Some of them will be starting again this year.” Walker will spend a lot of time handing the ball off to Max Smith and Peter Hamilton who are also seniors.

The dangerous duo accounted for the lion’s share of the team’s rushing yards with Smith leading the Titans with 1,215 yards. Hamilton also made key contributions to the running game with 663 yards and nine touchdowns in 2018. Fluke has been working in some screens and other short passes into the playbook but the ground game will continue to be the focal point of the offense this year. “There’s a chance we might throw it around a little more, but we’re not going away from our run game when you got backs like Peter Hamilton and Max Smith,” he said. Smith figures to be a big part of the defense from the linebacker position as well. Smith leads all of this year’s returners with 71 tackles in 2018. Sam Western is also returning to the defensive back field this year after coming away with three interceptions last season. Fluke said that he has a lot of depth on defense this year that will create

competition for playing and keep starters fresh if they need a rest. “A few of the subs could probably fight for the spot and I just have to be the coach that picks the one that starts that game,” he said. “If someone gets tired and needs a blow I’ll have a sub of the same caliber to put in. It’s been a long time since I’ve had that.” Fluke also mentioned that the veteran presence on the roster will allow him to go away from their base 4-4 defense and give the opposition different looks depending on the scenario. As the Titans prepare to take the field with a senior signal caller and two senior backs, Fluke said he has his eye on a run to the state title game. “I’m hoping we end up being one of the top teams like every team wants to be,” he said. “Every team wants to be state champs. Everybody’s goal is to be state champs and be number one.”

OCOSTA WILDCATS League: Pacific 2B - Coastal • Head Coach: Chris Raffelson • Colors: Crimson & Black • 2018 Record: 5-4 • Five-Year Record: 13-31 • Stadium: Griffin Field • State Titles (Since 1973): None By Ryan Sparks Grays Harbor News Group

In his second year at the head of the Ocosta Wildcats football program, head coach Chris Raffelson proved he was the right man for the job. Ocosta, which seemingly had a permanent spot in the lower half of the 2B Coastal League for nearly a decade prior, finished 5-4 under Raffelson in 2018. It was the first winning season for the Wildcats since 2009, where they also finished 5-4. But Raffelson understands his team cannot rest on its laurels, especially after losing their top rusher, two top receivers, their defensive leader and the majority of its formidable linemen to graduation. Entering his third year at the helm, Raffelson is confident his program will remain competitive in league as his players have a better grasp of the system, and it begins with third-year starting quarterback Cole Hatton. “It’s huge. (Hatton) has been with us all three years and has really helped develop this program,” Raffelson said of his play-caller who passed for 120.4 yards-per-game with 12 TDs to four interceptions in 2018.

Head coach Chris Raffelson

Part of developing that program is taking the reins off his players a bit more as they become more familiar with Raffelson’s system. “This year, we’ll have the full playbook in,” Raffelson said. “We kind of split the playbook into three sections. That way we weren’t overloading the kids. … We’ve kind of finished putting (all the plays) in this year and that’s something our kids were studying over the offseason to build this program.” Raffelson points to players such as Hatton, Christian Taylor, Isaac O’Hagan and Brandon Thomas to fill key skill position roles on the team in 2019. Taylor led the

Pacific League with six interceptions last season and, along with linebacker O’Hagan, will be looked upon to lead a Wildcats defense which had trouble stopping the top-tier teams in the league in 2018. On offense, Raffelson noted the development of Thomas, a dynamic player with speed (he ran a 4.7 40 time during combine practice drills). “He’s got great hands and is one of our best receivers on the team,” Raffelson said of Thomas. “He’s a utility player. We can put him anywhere. He’s a good defensive player and offensive player.” On the line, Raffelson is looking to his two returners — Devin Godfrey and Jorge Orozco — to anchor the front, particularly Godfrey, who will be responsible for making the calls in his junior year. “In our line, the center has to be really intelligent,” Raffelson said of Godfrey. “He makes all the line calls so you have to have someone that is strong enough to play the position and intelligent enough to know every position … He needs to pick up blitzes, see the blocking schemes. He’s in charge of who blocks who on the line. So we have to have an intelligent guy to play center.”

Ocosta quarterback Cole Hatton (13) throws a pass during the Wildcats’ practice on Thursday, Aug. 22.

While they are undersized when compared to last year’s team, Raffelson sees a faster, more talented team in the current iteration of the Wildcats. “Last year, we had a really big line. We’re going to be a little bit lighter on the line this year. … We won’t quite have the depth we had last year. … It’s tough to replace size. … But we’ve also got a lot of talent coming up. Our sophomore class from last year has a lot of talent and a lot of speed. … Overall, I think we have a lot more speed and talent spread throughout the team.” As he has made an incremental step in building the Ocosta program, Raffelson hopes the 2019 Wildcats can reach the next rung of the proverbial ladder. “Our goal is to always make the playoffs,” he said. “This year, we’ll try to push a little bit farther and try to get past that crossover game and into the (state) playoffs. It’s always been a goal to do a little better than we did last year. We were above .500 last year and our plan is to be even higher than that this year.”

RAYMOND SEAGULLS League: Pacific - 2B Coastal • Head Coach: Luke Abbott • Colors: Red & Black • 2018 Record: 6-4 • Five-Year Record: 32-19 Stadium: Raymond High School Field • State Titles (Since 1973): 1973-74-75 (Class 1A); 1993 (Class B-11) By Hasani Grayson Grays Harbor News Group

Speed and athleticism may cause Raymond to get more creative with the playbook this season. The Seagulls used threeback formations last year and had a pair of thousand-yard rushers carry the ball in 2018. Raymond’s leading rusher last year, Patrick Edwards, graduated but this year’s team will still rely heavily on returning running back McCartney Maden, who ran for 1,091 yards last year with 16 touchdowns. Joseph Villalpando will also get opportunities to carry the ball as the back picked up 537 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Raymond head coach Luke Abbott said speed may be the team’s biggest asset this year. “Speed-wise we’re going to be pretty good. We have some talented guys in the backfield and some guys who have been here before. With the backs, we’re going to be quick and it’s going to be one of our strengths.” Abbott went on to say he

may throw the ball a little bit more than he has in previous seasons to better take advantage of his players’ athleticism. More passing could be on the agenda for Raymond but the competition to see who would be throwing the ball was ongoing in early practices. Jose Delgado took snaps under center on the first day of practice but at least two other players were vying for the position as well. Raymond’s coaching staff is still expecting whoever isn’t chosen as quarterback

to see significant playing time at another position on offense. The Seagulls ran a 4-4 defensive front last year but opposing offenses could see other formations from Raymond in the 2019 campaign. Abbott said the speed that looks to alter the offense may cause him to alter the defense too. “We don’t want to run the same defense when athletes change every year. We might end up mixing that up a little bit this year,” he said. “We’ll have the 4-4 in the playbook and we’ll have another defense as well based on the type of athletes that we have.” Villalpando will be key to whatever defensive scheme Raymond runs as he has the most tackles of any returner with 42 tackles from the linebacker position. He also led the team in interceptions last year with four. Maden and Delgado also chipped in with two interceptions a piece. Abbott will be looking to utilize speed on both sides of the ball but a lack of size could present challenges to Raymond as they look to

return to the postseason. He said injuries, especially on the line could present a serious hurdle. “I think where we will struggle this year will be on the line. We don’t have as much size as we did last year or previous years,” he said. “Depth is going to be a problem at this level too. One or two injuries happen and a team is going to look completely different because you lean on specific people in 2B football.” If his team can stay healthy, Abbott thinks it can continue the pattern of competing for a state-playoff berth. “Every year, regardless of what we have coming back, we consider a successful season a winning season,” he said. “We have been to the crossover or the playoffs every single year I’ve been here and that’s continuing to be our goal.”

SOUTH BEND INDIANS League: 2B Independent • Head Coach: Chuck Spoor • Colors: Maroon & Gold • 2018 Record: 2-6 • Five-year Record: 19-25 Stadium: Millam Field • State Titles (Since 1973): 2010 By Hasani Grayson Grays Harbor News Group

Postseason play is off the table for South Bend this season but players and coaches were still hard at work implementing a new playbook. Due to concerns about roster size, the Indians will play 8-man football in the 2019 season after competing with 11 players on the field in 2018. The move means South Bend won’t compete against Pacific 2B teams and is playing as an independent against smaller teams in the 1B section. The Indians are ineligible for the state playoffs this season after a ruling was handed down by the WIAA this summer. The Indians will be led by new head coach Chuck Spoor who was a long-time assistant coach with South Bend’s football program. Spoor’s focus as an assistant was on the defensive side of the ball, but said he’s more than happy to let one of his assistants draw up a defensive scheme with just eight players on the field. “I’ve been the defensive

Head Coach Chuck Spoor

coach for quite a while and coach (Preston) Crow is taking over the defense this year. As a defensive guy, I think I’d be pulling my hair out with an 8-man defense because it’s a tough job,” he said. “We’re going to look at some different sets and see what works with our personnel, but it’s a lot of field to cover.” The difficulties on

defense will be eased a bit by Mayson Estle who saw a lot of time at free safety last season as he returns for his senior year. The defense was still a work in progress in early practices as the offensive game plan looked to be set. South Bend will run the veer, a version of the option offense that typically places two or more running backs in the backfield. Chase Flynn will be one of the primary ball carriers this season and will be receiving handoffs from quarter back Hunter Clements, who was primarily used as a running back himself last season. Freshman Max Crow will function as the backup quarterback and could see playing time at other positions as the season progresses. Spoor said some minor adjustments had to be made to the offense as well to compensate for having three less players on the field. “We’ve had to go through and adapt some of our blocking schemes to 8-man so there are some differences there,” he said. “We’re trying to utilize

more of the outside of the edges a little more with fewer guys on the field.” Line play is something South Bend coaches hope will develop throughout the season as young players compete for time in the trenches. “The line may be a challenge for us as we try to find the right pieces, but we’ll get it figured out,” Spoor said. With playing time with the position group up for grabs, Uriel Zeferino is expected to be one of the anchors up front and will likely play center on the offensive line. Not being able to compete for a playoff spot isn’t ideal but Spoor said he hopes his young roster is able to enjoy this season and learn the game. “We definitely want to have kids be as successful as we can be under the circumstances,” he said. “Each game can be its own little victory and hopefully the kids will do the best they can and have fun.”

TAHOLAH CHITWHINS

2019 TAHOLAH ROSTER

League: 1B Northwest • Head Coach: Donald Waugh • Colors: Red, Silver & Black • 2018 Record: 5-2 (1B Coastal) • Five-Year Record: 19-22 • Stadium: Ben Charley Sr. Field • State Titles (Since 1973): 1997 (Class B-8) By Hasani Grayson Grays Harbor News Group

The return of an experienced quarterback has the Taholah Chitwhins ready to open up the offensive playbook as they look to climb to the top of the standings in a new league. JauVon James-Juneau will be under center again this season as he takes the helm of the offense in his junior year. Chitwhins head coach Donald Waugh said he’s looking forward to another year with his signal caller. “We have some experience coming back this year. JauVon James-Juneau is going to be under center again this year and he’s a state javelin thrower and a really smart guy,” Waugh said. James-Juneau will have a valuable weapon in the backfield with him as Makya Ortivez-Hicks will see a lot of carries as the primary running back in the offense.

Joining him in the backfield will be James Orozco. Orozco spent a lot of time lined up as a wide receiver last season, but the coaching staff has given him more time at running back in preseason practices. Waugh said the returning experience on offense will allow him to experiment a little with the playbook this season. “We’re probably going to mess around with a little run-pass option this year,” he said. “I always like to start off with a base package and have that available and we’re looking at forming a run-pass option package to see how that goes.” Taholah will look to take advantage of its experienced players while cultivating some of the young talent on the roster as well. The Chitwhins have close to 30 players on the roster this year, including 11 freshmen and eighth graders.

Waugh said there could be playing opportunities for some of his less experienced players on special teams and is hoping the depth will be able to provide the starters with some rest when needed. “As far as depth, 30 is something new for us for sure. I haven’t been able to utilize a lot of depth, especially in special teams. Hopefully we can use as many of these kids as possible and keep our starters fresh.” Waugh mentioned he likes to have a base package for his offense to operate out of, but wasn’t as rigid when it came to defense. Taholah is entering its first year in the 1B Northwest, a league that features passheavy programs that look to spread the field on offense. The move to Northwest league is a departure from the 1B Coastal that featured local teams like Mary M. Knight and the now defunct

2018 review: Stellar performances, memorable rivalry games By Rick Anderson For the GH News Group

A 2018 Twin Harbors prep football season filled with stellar individual performances and some memorable rivalry games ended sooner than desired for the majority of clubs. Four area teams — Hoquiam, Montesano, Elma and Pe Ell-Willapa Valley — earned state playoff berths. Only the then-unbeaten Grizzlies, however, survived the opening round and they were eliminated in the Class 1A quarterfinals. Hoquiam, Montesano and Elma all ran afoul of members of the traditionally powerful Northwest 1A Conference in state competition. But several Twin Harbors clubs had moments to savor during regular-season play. Hoquiam, Montesano and Elma, in fact, each won their opening five games

— perhaps the only time those three schools were all unbeaten at the midway point of the regular season. Paced by senior quarterback Payton Quintanilla (the Evergreen 1A League Most Valuable Player), league defensive MVP Matt Brown and all-state defensive back Jackson Folkers, the Grizzlies went on to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 prior to their state quarterfinal playoff exit. Hoquiam had the added satisfaction of sweeping its three Grays Harbor rivals en route to the Evergreen 1A championship. Folkers enjoyed his signature moment in Hoquiam’s 28-7 non-league victory over Aberdeen in early September. The senior wide receiver/ defensive back intercepted four passes (probably a record for the ancient series) and also caught five passes for 140 yards as the Grizzlies

notched their fifth consecutive win over their trans-Myrtle Street rivals. Rayyon Dayton blocked a last-minute field goal to enable Hoquiam to survive a challenge from much-improved Elma, 14-13. One week later, Quintanilla racked up more 300 all-purpose yards, threw three touchdown passes and also scored on an interception return as Hoquiam topped Montesano, 37-25, in what has become a seemingly annual league title showdown. The Grizzlies opened state competition in impressive fashion, overwhelming Stevenson, 49-0. But with Quintanilla hobbled by an ankle injury suffered in practice, the Grizzlies had no answer for Lynden Christian’s speed in a state quarterfinal at Aberdeen’s Stewart Field and fell, 45-6. Despite fielding a team

that contained only six seniors, Montesano made its 13th consecutive playoff appearance and also notched its 13th straight win over rival Elma in the East County Civil War. The latter accomplishment assuredly did not come easily. After Elma took the lead on Taitum Brumfield’s touchdown run with about five minutes remaining, Montesano countered with a scoring drive of its own. Shaydon Farmer’s 12-yard TD pass to Sam Winter with 25 seconds left gave the Bulldogs a 25-19 triumph in one of the most exciting of recent Civil Wars. The Bulldogs punched their ticket to state with a 32-7 rout of White Salmon in the district crossover round, but were blitzed by Mount Baker, 48-7, in their state opener. U n h e ra l d e d e n t e ring the campaign, Elma turned some heads by ending a 13-year state playoff drought. Paced by Brumfield’s running and much-improved line play, the Eagles were only two plays (the blocked field goal against Hoquiam and Montesano’s late touchdown) away from an unbeaten regular season. Brumfield, who rushed for more than 1,300 yards during the season, amassed 159 of them in a 33-21 state-qualifying victory at La Center. The Eagles

hung tough for much of the way against heavily-favored Meridian in a state opener the following week, but eventually bowed out, 40-21. One year removed from a district playoff appearance, Aberdeen found the going tough in the rugged Evergreen 2A Conference. The Bobcats notched their lone win in midseason by topping Centralia, 21-14. Pe Ell-Willapa Valley repeated as the Southwest Washington 2B Coastal Division champion and earned its fourth consecutive state berth. The Titans also enjoyed a dramatic rivalry victory, as Max Smith’s interception in the end zone preserved a 28-24 win over Raymond. The PWV combine had the most frustrating state experience. Following a lopsided district win over Winlock, the lower-seeded Titans traveled east of the mountains and bolted to a 20-0 lead over Northwest Christian of Colbert in their state opener. But they fell victim to a Crusader comeback in a 35-26 loss. Raymond and Ocosta experienced roller-coaster seasons. After dropping their first three contests, the Seagulls put together a six-game winning streak to reach the district crossover round. After a district loss

to Wahkiakum, Raymond failed to survive a tiebreaker mini-playoff that determined the district’s final state berth. Ocosta took a different route to the crossover playoffs. The Wildcats won their first four, then lost three straight league outings before staying alive with a must-win over Chief Leschi. Ocosta’s season ended with a district loss to Adna. South Bend and North Beach struggled in the 2B Coastal Division. The Indians will play as an 8-man independent team this season. Due to player shortages elsewhere, Taholah and Oakville were the only area schools fielding 8-man squads last season. Neither qualified for state. The Twin Harbors were well-represented on Associated Press all-state teams announced in December. Hoquiam’s Folkers, as a defensive back, was the Harbor’s lone firstteam selection in the 1A classification. In the 2B class, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley’s Smith (linebacker), Sam Western (tight end) and Carson Cox (defensive back), Raymond’s Patrick Edwards (running back), Christian Anderson (defensive line) and Jose Delgado (placekicker) and Ocosta’s Kobe Beck (defensive back) were first-team choices.
