Fall in love with food and film during Savor By Erin Wygant
San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau
Summer’s blackberries drop from the vines and fall paints the islands with golden hues. It’s a season of fresh, local foods, thought-provoking films, and community fellowship. Experience all fall has to offer right here in the Islands during Savor the San Juans. “Savor” is an annual fall celebration of food, farms and film, now in its 12th year. Discover the gourmet archipelago at its finest and enjoy farm tours and demonstrations, harvest dinners, and much more. All three islands will hold all-day, free farm tours that include activities such as sheep shearing demonstrations, a fermentation workshop, and cider pressing. The San Juan Island Farm Tour will be September 21st-22nd, Orcas Island September 28th-29th, and Lopez Island October 5th-6th. Also on
October 5th, enjoy the Friday Harbor Fall Farm Parade, featuring local tractors, horses, goats, and more! Each farm tour kicks off with a breakfast benefitting the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild and includes local eggs, meats, and produce.
NEW SAVOR EVENTS Orcas Island Winery will host a DIY Cheese Board Workshop with Girl Meets Dirt to kick off the Orcas Island farm tour on Friday, September 27th from 6-8pm. Other local vendors and makers will also be featured at the winery during this family-friendly event. On October 26th, join Coho Restaurant and Madrone Cellars for a special wine dinner featuring wines from Madrone’s estate winery on San Juan Island. Inspired by French Champagne, Bordeaux reds and the dry white wines of Alsace, it’s a taste of Europe in the San Juan Islands.
Explore a medley of local and international films at the Orcas Island Film Festival on October 10-14th and the Friday Harbor Film Festival on October 25-27th.
In addition to award-winning documentary films, several premieres, and special events, these film festivals focus on the filmmakers themselves, with Q&A sessions and post
viewing discussions. Friday Harbor venues are within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal, airport and float plane dock, presenting an opportunity to discover the historic waterfront town’s galleries, museums, and shops without a car. Enjoy a ‘beercation’ and break out your lederhosen for San Juan Brewing Co.’s Oktoberfest on October 12th. Try local brews and a German-themed menu at this festive event. Finally, cap off your fall festivities with the 3rd annual Hops on the Rock festival. Shutting down the streets of Eastsound on November 9th, it’s a weekend of drinking, dancing and NovemBEER events all across Orcas Island. Live music, local food, and 20+ local breweries from around the region will be featured. We invite you to embrace your island community—its artisans, farmers, chefs and filmmakers. Consider a staycation and enjoy lodging, dining, and transportation specials during harvest season. Take in the glow of an autumn sunset, a smooth glass of wine, or a moving film. Find all these events and more at www.VisitSanJuans.com/savor.

5 tastes that define the San Juan Islands By The San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau
2. Heritage Fruit
In the late 1800s, the San Juan Islands were the top producer of fruit in Washington State, including award-winning cherries, apples, plums, pears, strawberries and more. The Orcas Island Artworks in Olga is a former strawberry barreling plant that at its height in 1941, barged 241 tons of strawberries and 2.5 million strawberry plants to farmers throughout the region. With the irrigation of the Yakima Valley in the early 20th century, that industry died, but the heritage orchards and a new generation of passionate orchardists are exploring the market, growing more fruit, and creating added value products like lush preserves and savory sauces from Girl Meets Dirt.
Delight in the unique, local flavors that make the San Juans special. Try oysters-on-the-half-shell fresh from a pristine, cold bay. Sip a handcrafted wine, beer, or cider made from locally foraged botanicals. These are some of the unmistakable flavors that define island cuisine.
1. Shellfish
The San Juan archipelago is full of shallow bays fed by cold freshwater springs, the perfect conditions for sweet, briny oysters to grow. Buck Bay Shellfish Farm on Orcas Island is a hidden gem where you can stop in for a couple of pounds of fresh clams or oysters, or you can while away a whole afternoon shucking oysters and drinking wine (BYOB) while looking out over the serenity of Buck Bay just yards away. Westcott Bay Shellfish Farm on the north end of San Juan Island is another great place to get a taste of the islands. With trails connecting to English Camp, this shellfish farm is a destination for hikers and bicyclists as well.
3. Seaweed & Salt
Stroll any of the islands' dozens of beaches, and you will see and smell two of the most distinctive food ingredients in the Salish Sea pantry: seaweed and salt. Strewn along pebbled beaches are ribbons of bright green sea lettuce, bull kelp, and lacy red branches of Palmeria dulse. Local foragers gather seaweed which finds its way onto local plates as salads, sauces, and garnishes for fish and shellfish. Ursa Minor on Lopez Island is known for using locally foraged food in its ever-changing menu. Local farmer Brady Ryan started San Juan Island Sea Salt, made by collecting salt water from the Salish Sea. Now flavored with botanicals such as smoked madrona bark, dried kelp, lemon peel and various dried herbs, the sea salt is a delicious way to bring out local flavors.
4. Lavender
In any list of definitive island flavors, lavender deserves its own category, partly because it is a cultivated botanical rather than a forged one. But it's also an important part of island culture. Pelindaba Lavender Farm has been growing lavender and creating lavender products for almost 20 years. At the farm, you can stroll the lavender fields, learn about how lavender oil is extracted and distilled into almost 250 products made onsite, including many food products such as lavender teas, salad dressings, ice cream and herbal rubs.
5. Light, food-friendly wines
“We ‘Savor the San Juans’ all year long!” OrcasIslandChamber.com
All three of the main islands have wineries and vineyards that produce beautifully crafted wines. Whether a light, refreshing white that fits perfectly with seafood and light meats, or a robust red meant for an elegant evening, these local spots have it all. San Juan Vineyards, Lopez Island Vineyards, and the Orcas Island Winery each have unique styles and inviting atmospheres that welcome visitors and locals alike to sip and savor the San Juans. Find out more about upcoming farm tours, harvest dinners, and other events during Savor the San Juans this fall.
