This year, let’s all give to Each One, Plus One Choose your favorite local nonprofits, then find a new one to support through the annual OCFA campaign.

hat matters most to YOU? Now in our 60th year, One Call for All has changed the landscape of giving on Bainbridge Island for generations, supporting the important work of nonprofits serving our community and raising the profile of philanthropy. It’s a pretty simple mission: nonprofits do good work in our community, we we send out an appeal letter called the Red Envelope, and then people like you give to what matters most to them, enabling those organizations to continue their vital work. Thanks to you, we raised more than $1.5 million last year, and every penny went straight to the nonprofits you care about!

“One Call for All is one of those amazing efforts that embodies what is so special about Bainbridge Island.” - Sheila Hughes, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art “Bainbridge Island is the place that it is because of the multitude of people and organizations that show up do to their part…. Kudos to OCFA for being the thread that sews our island’s web of goodness together.” – Lara Hansen, EcoAdapt “We are very thankful that One Call for All pays all of the fees for the donations and give donor a chance to include ALL organizations they care about in one convenient gift.” – Lisa Horn, West Sound Wildlife Shelter

GIVE TO ‘EACH ONE, PLUS ONE’ If you’ve been a part of this Bainbridge tradition for a while, you might have a list of favorites that you choose each year. This year, we invite you to consider adding one new organization to your list of what matters most to you. Donors last year gave 13,000 individual donations to our nonprofit partners – we’d like to see that number increase by 10 percent. It’s a lofty goal, and we hope you’ll help us reach it by choosing Each One, Plus One! Each one that you give to, plus one new one! If you typically give $100 to five charities, consider finding another whose work inspires you, and make it $120 for six organizations. If you’re used to giving $20,000 to 20 charities, try $21,000 to 21!

MEET OUR FEATURED FIVE Choosing what matters most to you might be easy or challenging, but included in this insert are articles about our five featured organizations: West Sound Wildlife Shelter, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Bainbridge Island Child Care Center, EcoAdapt and Kitsap Rescue Mission. We hope you’ll be inspired by their work and might pick one for your Plus One. Or peruse all 125 organizations to learn about one you’ve not supported in the past. WE WELCOME SEVEN NEW ORGANIZATIONS FOR 2019 We welcome seven new organizations to the Red Envelope Campaign this year: Bainbridge Food Forest, Girls on the Run Northwest, Give to Heal, Nurse Meg’s Beacon of Joy Endowment, Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, WEAVE Presents,

and Wilderness Land Trust. Welcome to One Call For All! OCFA OFFERS SO MANY EASY WAYS TO GIVE One Call for All has come a long way since board members knocked on doors to collect for nonprofit agencies, We now offer donors the opportunity to give to as many local nonprofits as they’d like, by check, credit card, monthly donations, or even gifts of appreciated assets. In our last campaign, individuals gift ranged from $6 (divided up among the donor’s six favorite charities) to $100,000, and so truly, giving through One Call for All is for everyone. Support as many organizations as you’d like. The average donor chooses seven, but many broaden their impact by donating to the Community Fund (divided into “shares” distributed to organizations based on how many donations each receives) or to One Call for All operations, which supports all agencies by maintaining our website, postage, printing, credit card fees, and more. Our community is special, made even more so by the amazing people who lead and work in our island’s nonprofits. YOU are the reason these organizations can serve our island. Please give generously to what matters most to YOU.

raccoon struck by a car, a chipmunk mauled by a cat, a sparrow sickened by a dirty feeder, a fledgling eagle that’s plummeted to earth from the safety of its nest. West Sound Wildlife Shelter treats all its patients like the best free clinic, without regard for insurance or ability to pay. Just the satisfaction of seeing a beautiful creature released back into the wild to scamper or fly again. “If you’re sick, injured or orphaned, we’re here to take care of you,” says Lisa Horn, the shelter’s executive director – “You” being the myriad mammalian, avian and reptilian creatures that share our Bainbridge Island home and sometimes need a trip to the emergency room. The shelter’s five-person staff and nearly 100 volunteers provide restorative (sometime palliative) care for the several thousand sick and injured animals that are brought in to the shelter at Bloedel Reserve each year.

A veterinarian treats an injured raptor at West Sound Wildlife Shelter. Demand spikes during the summer months, when new critters are birthed into the world and more people are outdoors and interacting with local wildlife. Around 500 patients per year come from around the island, and the balance from the Kitsap Peninsula and dozens of surrounding communities.

Each new patient receives a veterinary assessment of its injuries and the prospects for successful treatment. Some cases are grave. But a remarkable number are treatable, and after a suitable shelter stay the animals are transitioned to outdoor enclosures to climb, hop, run, fly, or swim in preparation for release.

Since 1975, PAWS has been YOUR animal welfare organization on the island, helping pets and their people every day. We are asking for your continued support through One Call for All. Without YOU there would be no help for companion animals like these kittens who came from a hoarding situation or these pups who needed vet care, in our community. Please check out our website at www. pawsbink.org to learn more about the many programs PAWS offers on Bainbridge Island in North Kitsap. of Bainbridge Island & Northand Kitsap P O Box 10811 Bainbridge Island, WA 98110 206-842-2451 www.pawsbink.org paws@pawsbink.org

The success rate is impressive: Some 85 percent of mammals and 75 percent of birds are released back into the wild and familiar surroundings, by law within three miles of where they were found as safety allows. “We don’t want to put an opossum that’s been mauled by a dog back in the same yard with the dog,” Horn says. An unfortunate number of cases are “abductions” by humans: baby mammals or birds found alone and brought to the shelter by well-meaning but misguided Samaritans. “Somebody comes along and sees a baby animal and they say, ‘Oh, it must need its mom,’” Horn says, when in fact Mom has just gone away for a while to forage or hunt. “Unfortunately they get so worried about little ones out in the wild, they sometimes bring them to us when they don’t need to.” That’s where the shelter’s education and outreach programs come in. Accompanied by wildlife “ambassadors” – raptors, a turkey vulture, an opossum – former patients no longer able to survive in the wild, handler-educators visit local classrooms and civic clubs to give people a direct connection with wildlife, encourage See WILDLIFE, Page 5

With expansion in mind, the center has an option to purchase 12 acres of “the most gorgeous forest you’ve ever seen” near Port Gamble. A capital campaign is already underway. The new location will give the center enough room to segment its operations: a public-facing education center and gift shop for visitor engagement, with the hospital facility and outdoor enclosures tucked away out of sight for the comfort and recuperative health of the patients. Even with a move to Port Gamble, Horn says, the shelter will maintain an intake center on Bainbridge Island. Support from One Call For All maintains the shelter’s day to day operations: direct animal care including purchase of hospital supplies and medications, and mealworms, crickets and other munchies to feed the patients during their stay. Horn says islanders are fortunate and blessed to share the ecosystem with so much wildlife, whose wellbeing is a barometer of the health of the environment. No wonder the folks who

New roots for a longtime kids’ center

Long-running Bainbridge Island Child Care Center debuts a sparkling new K-6 campus on High School Road.

E

ven with 45 years in business as a popular “life-saver” for working parents, Bainbridge Island Child Care Centers may at this moment in time be the island’s best-kept secret. With a sparkling new campus, more program space than ever and the school year in full swing, the center still has room for more students in its affordable, accessible pre- and after-school programs. More kids welcome; parents, inquire within. “The whole heartbeat of this is for the working parent, providing excellent experiences for kids while their parents are at work,” says Shelley Long, executive director. “The kids are happy here – a lot of time they don’t want to leave when their parents get here.” You’d be hard pressed to find many island businesses with a longer run, certainly in the child-care sector. The center was founded by islanders Joyce Veterane and Meg Hagemann as “Berry Day Care” in

Everybody’s happy at Bainbridge Island Child Care Center! 1974, to provide strawberry farm workers – the island still retained its agricultural character in those days – with quality child care. Their vision was a program with solid curriculum in a nurturing environment, values that still inspire today’s BICCC. The only childcare center on the island to provide before- and after-school care to children through grade 6, BICCC has been the home away from home for more than 130 children per year. Its three programs, preschool, Kid’s Club and Big Kids, offer a

dynamic curriculum with an emphasis on explorative learning. After three decades as a land tenant on the school district campus next to Ordway School, BICCC several years ago purchased a 2.5-acre parcel on High School Road for its K-6 programs when Voyager Montessori relocated. (BICCC’s pre-K programs are still housed on Cave Avenue near the ferry.) Montessori’s board selected BICCC to receive the property at a below-market rate.

Then the renovations began. A $1.5 million “Little Red Schoolhouse” capital campaign and support from Bainbridge Rotary funded a new modular main building and two fully refurbished classrooms, all united around a landscaped central plaza and flower garden. The surrounding acreage has plenty of room for activities and outdoor learning; mixed forest and rolling, grassy play areas give kids space to roam the natural world and burn off extra energy. The new campus opened this summer, right on the school bus line and just down from the Bainbridge Island School District main campus. Early drop-offs can get ready for school (breakfast included) in a warm, safe environment, and then bus right up the hill to begin the school day – then bus back down to await pickup when Mom and Dad get off work. During summer and school breaks, the center is open daylong, 6 to 6:30. “Parents still have to work,” Long says. The new luxury of space has Long and her staff shuffling students from one module to the next with the daily ebb and flow. A second-grade pilot program this year focuses on land and environmental art; the grades 3-6 program includes themed days with PowerPoint lessons and See CHILD CARE, Page 8

Many Island families have known the three program directors, Brigitte Wilson, Bridgette Springer and Anne Campbell, for over 20 years. Campbell has been on staff for 40 years, long enough to earn generational loyalty. Lily Karsten attended BICCC programs as a kid and now brings her own daughter,

Art museum our ‘cultural living room’ The humanities flourish at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, now so much more than just a visual art gallery.

W

hat was envisioned as a library of sorts, a gallery that anyone could just walk into and share, has become more of a “cultural living room.” With dramatic growth in its humanities fare, film and music festivals, forums and lectures – all wrapped around its foundational draw, the visual arts – Bainbridge Island Museum of Art has blossomed into a regional nexus of ideas, aesthetics and exchange. “I think of the museum as the perfect storm of opportunity,” says Sheila Hughes, BIMA’s executive director. BIMA opened in 2013, the vision of island philanthropist Cynthia Sears. The gallery focuses on contemporary works by artists from around the Puget Sound region, highlighting both recognized talents and emerging names. Major exhibitions turn over three times per year, meaning 15-20 new shows are offered annually in a range of media.

BIMA’s major exhibitions turn over three times a year, meaning 15-20 new shows. Anchoring the island’s most prominent intersection, where highway meets ferry, the museum draws 100,000 visitors annually – 90 percent of them from beyond Bainbridge shores. The summer months are humming, as visitors pouring off the boat stop in to experience the galleries as they pass to and from Winslow.

Hughes has a saying, “A stage is a terrible thing to waste,” and indeed BIMA’s modest auditorium has emerged as one of its best assets. Popular jazz and R&B music festivals, themed film series, lectures and other humanities fare revolve around the space named for patron Frank Buxton.

After a lifetime spent on stage as a performer, one of Buxton’s last gifts to the theatre before his 2018 passing was a piano. “It’s a gift to have a little 100-seat, jewel box-size auditorium,” Hughes says. Hughes worked in the nonprofit cultural sector in Seattle for 25 years, producing such bigtime fare as Bumbershoot and Teatro Zinzanni that drew hundreds of volunteers to support the programming. Even so, she’s wowed by the level of engagement she finds on Bainbridge Island. A cadre of some 60 docents cover BIMA’s front desk every hour of the day, then selfeducate so they can lead museum tours themselves. They take tickets at concerts and festivals, pour wine at events, even hang the new exhibitions. “I’ve never seen volunteerism like this, coming from such a wall of generosity,” she says. “It’s so humbling.” Five years in, some things at BIMA haven’t changed: it’s still open seven days a week and there’s still no charge for admission, which Hughes calls “mind blowing.” School field trips are central to the See BIMA, Page 10

Their mission: sheltering the displaced Kitsap Rescue Mission helps those on the streets, but faces an uncertain future at its home in downtown Bremerton.

I

t’s a cruel irony when a shelter for the homeless is itself displaced. Kitsap Rescue Mission in Bremerton is maintaining critical daytime services for the area’s most vulnerable population, even as its overnight shelter has been shut down by the City of Bremerton until fire sprinklers are installed. While the mission looks for capital funding for short-term building improvements – overnight stays have been moved to the local Salvation Army, for now – the demand for day-to-day services and the underlying challenge, homelessness, remains. “These are people we’re talking about,” says Nancy Olsten, executive director. “We can talk about homelessness in terms of numbers and stories, but if one person is out there at night without the right clothing and it’s wet and the wind comes up, we’re talking about a life.” Founded in 2009 as a mobile meal provider, Kitsap Rescue Mission put down

Kitsap Rescue Mission in downtown Bremerton provides meals, shelter and other relief. permanent roots with purchase of an aging but spacious building in downtown Bremerton in 2015. The facility is now open daily year-round, offering 26 beds for overnight stays and a drop-in day services for those with nowhere else to go. Drawn in ones and twos from the surrounding streets each morning, they

come through the door for a cup of coffee, a donut or sandwich, maybe a shower or some clothes. Case workers and counselors help them tackle the underlying problems that have led to homelessness. PO boxes are available for receiving mail, and phones to help clients get back on their feet. “There’s a huge ‘readiness gap’ between

living on the street and applying for a job,” Olsten says. While West Sound homelessness is something of an “invisible problem” compared to Seattle streets, in human terms the statistics are sobering: on any given night in Kitsap County, there are 146 men and women sleeping without shelter. Only about two-thirds of the estimated 450 homeless people can find a fixed roof, leaving the rest to take refuge wherever they can – in tents, automobiles, parking garages or other places lacking security and warmth. The mission welcomes them all, from new moms carrying tiny babies in arms to older gentlemen ambling in with walkers. Homelessness is often ascribed to addiction or mental health issues, but Olsten said many clients have been forced out of permanent housing by rising rents. Eight in 10 have an annual income of less than $10,000. Half have no income at all. The physical toll of displacement is always apparent. “When you meet someone who’s 55 who’s been on the streets, you might think they’re 70 by their appearance,” Olsten says. “It’s a very hard life.”

Year after year, island neighbors join together to support the work of local nonprofit organizations through One Call for All’s Red Envelope Campaign. This campaign provides one place to give while allowing thoughtful individuals and families to support multiple deserving local organizations with one gift. In addition to the chance to easily give to multiple nonprofits, 100% of your contribution goes directly to the organizations you designate. There are no fees to the organizations or to you, so that these worthy nonprofits can focus more of their resources on serving our community and less on fundraising and administration. In last year’s campaign, thousands of islanders came together to raise $1.5 million, and every cent went directly to the nonprofits.

Don’t give up hope – learn and adapt EcoAdapt shares wisdom and strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change in a warming world.

L

ara Hansen won’t shade the truth: climate change is a tough issue for anyone to face. With almost daily news of melting ice caps and warming oceans, it might be easy to give up hope. Hansen, co-founder of Bainbridge-based EcoAdapt, hopes you won’t. “The greatest despair would be if we did nothing,” she says. “The only way we are going to fix the mess we’re in is to change what we are doing. Despair that leaves us in the status quo won’t make things any better.” Founded in 2008 by Hansen and Eric Mielbrecht, EcoAdapt offers educational programs and forums to help concerned global citizens meet the challenges of a warming planet. Their points of focus: adaptation, those actions needed to prepare for and respond to climate change, and mitigation, or changes islanders can make in their day-to-day practices to help slow or offset its effects. The group’s information clearinghouse

Reduce your carbon footprint, EcoAdapt’s Lara Hansen says. is the Climate Adaptation Knowledge Exchange (CAKEx.org), the largest georeferenced, open access, database of adaptation resources, what Hansen calls “your online adaptation destination.” State of Adaptation, the group’s research wing, surveys and assesses such areas as coastal management and water resources, while Awareness to Action workshops

apply the adaptation lens to any local issue, including Bainbridge Island’s Comprehensive Plan. Local action is critical, Hansen says. “As island dwellers, we must start considering the implications of climate change in all our local decision making,” she says. “How will what we are planning to do on our island affect greenhouse gas

emissions – we have to get them down to close to zero from fossil fuel sources – and how will we be vulnerable to the changes we are currently and will continue to experience?” At home, Hansen says, islanders can reduce use of fossil fuel-based energy as much every day, including transportation choices (bus, walk or bike) and consumer choices (buy less, buy used, buy local, buy without packaging). “Ideally,” Hansen says, “we’d like for Bainbridge to be the innovator that moves the climate action needle.” EcoAdapt has partnered with NOAA, the US Forest Service and other federal agencies to advance the science and raise critical awareness. The discussion is moving forward, Hansen says, and the time for dramatic action is now. “Since I started working on this issue there has been tremendous growth in the number of people who are thinking about it and how we now talk about it. People are now very matter of fact that it is happening,” she says. “Unfortunately I see very little action to change the trajectory we are on or change the way we operate in all facets of modern life to address the changes we will See ECOADAPT, Page 17

The

ilderness Land Trust

People live, work and raise their families on Bainbridge Island because of the proximity and access to public lands. Washington’s designated wilderness is a wildlife safe haven for threatened and endangered species, a reservoir for clean air and water, and an opportunity to experience the profound beauty of nature. The Wilderness Land Trust acquires and transfers private lands (inholdings) to public ownership that complete designated and proposed wilderness areas, or directly protect wilderness values. Our lands program currently has numerous active projects just a short drive from the island, specifically in the Wild Sky Wilderness and Henry M. Jackson Wilderness. Our goal is to systematically acquire private inholdings to remove the threat of residential and resort development, road construction, mining and logging, stitching together the fabric of the wilderness and eventually making it whole for future generations. MISSION

Continued from page 11 As the near-term need for fire sprinklers plays out so the shelter can resume overnight services in its own building, Kitsap Rescue Mission’s long-term vision is much more ambitious. Thanks to volunteer labor and materials donated by Lowe’s, the mission has begun a $3 million capital campaign and renovation to add capacity and expand services. When fully restored, the facility will offer an overnight shelter for 45 persons and two-year transitional housing upstairs for 45 more, along with a commercial-scale kitchen and a broader array of services. “When we’re finished, we’ll be able to have 45 people overnight in the shelter,” Olsten said, “so that will be quite a big jump.” Funding through One Call For All will go toward the mission’s capital needs and general operations serving Kitsap’s homeless. Whether you see them or not, the homeless are among us. The mission recently took in a young woman who’d just been released from the county jail, pregnant and with nowhere else to turn. “She credits us with saving her life,” Olsten said, “getting her off the street and giving some time to find some other resources.” Learn more at www.kitsaprescue.org.

No one should have to sleep outside. Give to Kitsap’s only year-round homeless shelter and save lives. www.kitsaprescue.org
