HolidayTV | British Holiday Specials

Happy Christmas from across the pond By Kyla Brewer TV Media

TV fans are a lucky lot during the holidays. Watching festive television specials and holidaythemed episodes of beloved shows is a time-honored tradition in many households, and fans of British TV are particularly fortunate. Across the pond, broadcasters often gift viewers with lavish extended editions of their favorite programs, and many of them will make their way into North American homes this season. On this side of the Atlantic, broadcasters sometimes feature holiday themes in regular TV episodes, but British broadcasters have a propensity for producing longer, stand-alone Christmas specials, which often air outside a series’ regular run. Shows such as “Call the Midwife,” “Doctor Who,” “Victoria,” “Downton Abbey” and “The Office” have been highly praised for their special holiday editions. The U.K. film and television industry has earned a reputation for superior period dramas, and “Call the Midwife” has a long-standing track record for topnotch Christmas specials. Inspired by the memoirs of British nurse Jennifer Worth, the show follows the lives of nurse midwives working in London’s poverty-stricken East End in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The show premiered in 2012 to widespread acclaim and has aired a stand-alone holiday special between each season since the very beginning. PBS executive Beth Hoppe expressed appreciation for the popular series in an official release about the 2016 holiday special when it was scheduled to air on the network. “The series has been praised for its compassionate and bold approach to issues, including stillbirth, mental health, abortion, homosexuality, race

and disability,” Hoppe said of “Call the Midwife.” When the show began, Vanessa Redgrave (“Julia,” 1977) narrated the story as nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine, “Line of Duty”) as she worked alongside her fellow midwives and the nuns of Nonnatus House, a nursing convent. Raine left the show after season 3, but many of the core cast have remained. Jenny Agutter (“The Avengers,” 2012), Judy Parfitt (“Dolores Claiborne,” 1995), Helen George (“Strictly Come Dancing”) and Miranda Hart (“Miranda”) also appear in the series. Over the years, “Call the Midwife” Christmas specials have dealt with such topics as mental illness, teenage pregnancy and adoption. Fans will be happy to know that another Christmas special is in the works to premiere before the new season begins in 2019. Perhaps the most popular period drama to emerge from British television lately is “Downton Abbey,” and it, too, has gifted fans with several Christmas-themed specials. Since its premiere in 2010, the show has captivated audiences with the saga of the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic servants at their Yorkshire country estate known as Downton Abbey. Oscar winner Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park,” 2001) created the program, which features a very large cast of talented performers, including Hugh Bonneville (“Paddington,” 2014) as Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, and Elizabeth McGovern (“The Handmaid’s Tale,” 1990) as his wife, Cora, the Countess of Grantham. Michelle Dockery (“Good Behavior”), Laura Carmichael (“Marcella”) and Jessica Brown Findlay (“Albatross,” 2011) portray their daughters, Mary, Edith and Sybil. The show chronicled their tumultuous lives from

1912 to 1925 over the course of its six-season run, which included five Christmas specials. In fact, the final episode of the series aired as a Christmas special on Christmas Day in 2015, a bittersweet holiday treat for viewers. Like so may other British specials, the Yuletide editions of “Downton Abbey” feature stories of romance, tragedy and scandal. Each one wraps up significant moments in the Crawleys’ lives, from the births of children to the deaths of loved ones. Those hoping for a glimpse inside a Royal Christmas may want to look out for the holiday edition of “Victoria.” Created by Daisy Goodwin (“Jamie’s Kitchen”), the show is a fictional retelling of the days of Queen Victoria, played by Jenna Coleman (“Doctor Who”). On this side of the pond, the program airs under PBS’s “Masterpiece Theatre” banner, and it’s earned considerable acclaim from North American audiences. British holiday specials are gifts for all

1846, Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert (Tom Hughes, “The Game”), hopes to recreate the Christmastime joy of his youth. For her part, Victoria tries to make an African girl named Sarah (Zaris-Angel Hator, “Black Earth Rising”) feel welcome within the palace. Tensions are high between the Royal couple, but the holiday spirit has a habit of bringing people together. “Victoria” is expected to return to ITV in early 2019 with eight episodes set in 1848, a turbulent time for the monarch. Those hoping for another Christmas special may be out of luck, however. No plans for another holiday edition have been announced, but at least fans can revel watching Coleman and Hughes in the 2017 special. Of course, the U.K. is known for much more than just period dramas, and so is Coleman. Fans of the iconic television series “Doctor Who” may remember the actress as Clara Oswald, who served as the companion of both the 11th and 12th incarnations of the alien time-traveler known as The Doctor. A Time Lord, The Doctor traverses the universe in the TARDIS, a time-traveling space ship that looks like a blue British police box. The quirky science fiction show first aired on the BBC from 1963 to 1989, and was revived in 2005. Over the years, 13 actors have taken on the coveted role of The Doctor, who regenerates when it’s time. Past Doctors include William Hartnell (“The Army Game”), Peter Davison (“Campion”), David Tennant (“Broadchurch”) and Peter Capaldi (“The Thick of It”). This year marked a big change for the series with its first female Doctor as Jodie Whittaker (“Black Mirror”) took the reigns from Capaldi in the 2017 Christmas special in front of nearly eight million viewers. Believe it or not, “Doctor Who” Christmas specials have peaked even higher in the ratings over the years. The top-rated Yule-themed “Doctor Who” special featured Tennant’s Doctor alongside Kylie Minogue (“Neighbours”) as Astrid, a waitress on an intersteller replica of the Titanic who helps the hero prevent the space liner from crashing into Earth.

Hallie Woodhall, Tom Hughes and Jenna Coleman star in “Victoria”

The program drew more than 13 million viewers when it aired on Christmas Day in 2007. Coleman’s first appearance as Clara is actually in the Christmas special “The Snowmen,” which premiered on Christmas Day in 2012. In it, she enlists The Doctor’s help to stop an entity known as the Great Intelligence from creating an army of ice people. Other holiday editions have featured everything from robot Santas, alien spiders and wooden humanoids. While the original run of the series didn’t feature proper Christmas specials, the new “Doctor Who” has included a holiday treat every year since it was revived in 2005, and this year will be no different. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, showrunner Chris Chibnall confirmed that the new season would feature Whittaker’s Doctor in a Christmas special in addition to the 10 regular episodes. It remains to be seen whether Whittaker’s holiday offering will entice as many diehard fans as past Christmas specials In addition to sweeping dramas and legendary science fiction, British television is known for comedy, and one of the most memorable holiday specials

of the modern television era was the official finale of the BBC Two mockumentary “The Office.” After creators Ricky Gervais (“Extras”) and Stephen Merchant (“Extras”) announced they wouldn’t be writing another season of the hit series, they appeased disappointed fans with a two-part Christmas special. The holiday program revisited the characters from the comedy, including Gervais as David Brent, who was once the general manager of the branch of a paper company where the other characters worked. Martin Freeman (“Fargo”) appeared as witty Tim Canterbury, the antithesis to kiss-up Gareth Keenan (Mackenzie Cook, “Game of Thrones”), and Lucy Davis (“Wonder Woman,” 2017) portrayed office receptionist Dawn Tinsley. The special wrapped up the agonizing will-theywon’t-they storyline between Dawn and Tim in a bow for fans of the series. Christmas specials run the gamut from drama to science fiction, and even comedy, so there is truly something for everyone this holiday season. antagonist. He looks more like a homely hound dog than a reindeer, but reindeer he is — he was banished from the rest of Santa’s troupe for petty thievery and sent to live in a place with the charming moniker of the Cave of Lost Rejections. Scratcher tricks Rudolph and Frosty after being recruited into a dastardly scheme, but we’re never really told what becomes of him in the end. Suffice to say he won’t be pulling Santa’s sleigh anytime soon.

Annabelle (“Annabelle’s Wish” — 1997) Annabelle may not start out as a reindeer, but she gets there eventually. The young calf is born on Christmas Eve, and after meeting Santa and his reindeer, Annabelle wishes to be able to fly herself. It’s not until years later that a selfless act makes its way back to her and Annabelle finally has her dream recognized: Santa turns her into a sleek young reindeer and she flies off with him and his team. Warmheartedness ensues.

Scratcher (“Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July” — 1979) The success of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” led to a number of lesserknown (and arguably sillier) Rankin/Bass sequels. One of these, “Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July,” introduces the ignoble Scratcher as a secondary

I saved my favorite for last. OK, so Zero isn’t exactly a reindeer, nor is he exactly alive, but he saves the day (in a sense) in decidedly Rudolph fashion, so he deserves a spot on this list. Jack Skellington’s ghostly pet dog in the Halloweenslash-Christmas-themed stop-motion favorite sports a glowing jack-o’-lantern nose, which allows him to lead a well-meaning but tragically misguided Jack’s team of skeletal reindeer into the human world to deliver monstrous toys to all the little children. Things don’t go as planned for the woeful Jack — he just doesn’t quite get how to pull off being Santa Claus — but Zero is by his side through it all.

Did you know that Rudolph sired an equally stop-motion son? Well he did, and his name’s Robbie. The Claymation Robbie doesn’t share his pop’s nasal luminescence, but his own schnoz has a remarkable worldwide tracking ability that leads him to the North Pole, where he hopes to join Santa’s reindeer team as its navigator. Depicted as a bit of a slacker, Robbie eventually buckles down in order to compete in the Reindeer Games and live up to his famous father’s name.

Rudolph (“Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer” — 1964) Rudolph is undoubtedly THE quintessential reindeer. The fella with a very shiny nose was brought to life first in a poem, then in a song based on the poem, then in a 1964 Rankin/Bass stop-motion TV special based on the song, which is how many of us came to know and love him. “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer” is a staple during the holidays, and Rudolph himself, who famously saved Christmas one stormy night thanks to the very appendage that made him a target of scorn from his peers, has become an enduring icon of the yuletide season.

HolidayTV | Mickey’s Christmas Carol

Merry Christmas, Mickey By Joy Doonan TV Media

I

t’s a Christmas tradition in many households to watch at least one screen adaptation of the beloved Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” before the holiday season is up. What better recipe for wholesome holiday entertainment, then, than a Dickens crossover with the Disney universe? Disney’s 1983 animated holiday special “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” combines the enduring charm of Dickens’ story with familiar characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. The cartoon has been a popular item on the average family’s holiday must-watch list ever since. This year marks the 35th anniversary of “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” as well as the 90th anniversary of Mickey Mouse himself, who first debuted as “Steamboat Willie” in 1928. There’s no more felicitous time than now to get into the spirit and tune in to this animated classic as it airs throughout the Christmas season. Nominated for a 1983 Academy Award for Best Animated Short, “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” paints a trademark Disney flair over many aspects of the original tale. In the process of storyboarding the film, animators strategically decided on which Disney personas would best suit the characters of the story, giving rise to such memorable Christmas characters as Scrooge McDuck in the role of Dickens’ original crotchety Ebenezer, and an unconventionally Goofy version of Bob Marley’s ghost. What eventually became “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” was originally a Disneyland record and read-along book set produced by the Walt Disney Players in the early 1970s. A team of Disney animators, led by director Burny Mattinson, later set

out to adapt the record to the screen. This was a landmark project, as it was the first time Mickey Mouse, the character who represented the genesis of the Disney empire, had appeared in any of the company’s films in the previous 30 years. In a docu-short on the creation of “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” Mattinson explains that in the process of revitalizing Disney’s most quintessential character, the production team set to work to find parts for other familiar faces from the Disney vault. This included the casting of Toad, from 1949’s “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad,” as Fezziwig during the Christmas dance scene in which the Ghost of Christmas Past (Jimminy Cricket) shows Scrooge his youth. The film was also a landmark project in the sense that it was the birthplace of some long-standing beloved Disney voice acting careers. Wayne Allwine, for example, got the part of Mickey, which he then kept, continuing to provide Mickey’s voice from 1977 until 2009. Likewise, it was the result of “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” that Alan Young came to be the longtime voice of Scrooge McDuck, which he provided right up until his death in 2016. The success of “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” brought on a renewed cultural endearment to Mickey Mouse. Disney seized on this fandom in the ‘90s, when it produced the 1999 holiday special “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas,” which is comprised of three shorts: “Donald Duck Stuck on Christmas,” “A Very Goofy Christmas” and “Mickey and Minnie’s The Gift of the Magi.” While perhaps not as iconic as the 1983 film, this special also became a popular holiday classic in its own right, and its creation is a testament to the Disney legacy that “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”

helped to revive. An honorable but playful take on the original story of “A Christmas Carol,” “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” never gets old as an annual holiday viewing tradition. Celebrate the 35th anniversary of this cartoon classic by checking your local listings to see when it airs this Christmas season.

The Elf on the Shelf (“An Elf’s Story: The Elf on the Shelf” ” — 2011) Ever wonder how Santa finds out who’s been naughty and who’s been nice? He’s got a fink, and that fink is the Elf on the Shelf. The 30-minute animated special is a televised version of the children’s book “The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition” by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell. The story tells of Santa’s “scout elves,” who hide in people’s homes taking note of what goes on before flying back to the North Pole to report to Santa on what they’ve witnessed. Despite some criticism the Elf has received for his stoolie tendencies, many a shelf now finds itself graced with an elf come Christmastime.

Every hero needs a sidekick, and Hermey is Rudolph’s. A fellow misfit, the well-coifed Hermey bears the distinction of being one of the only elves at the North Pole who doesn’t look completely identical to his peers (the others being his grouchy boss and one tall guy with glasses). But what really sets him apart is his ambition to be a dentist rather than a toymaker in Santa’s workshop. His dentistry book serves him well when he yanks out all the teeth of the Abominable Snow Monster, rendering him harmless to the denizens of Christmastown (rather a grisly fate actually, as anyone who’s had a tooth pulled can attest).
