back her up. She’s also one of the employees who enjoys hiding the office doll, which is about four-feet tall and named Claire, in various locations for him to find. Once the property managers hid Claire in an attic at a vacant unit and sent McFadyen there to deal with an issue. They never saw his reaction, but Allen said it was enough to hear about it later. His employees are what makes the job fun for McFadyen, he said. He was born at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, grew up on Whidbey and graduated from Coupeville High School. He moved away for a time and returned in 2006. He has two children and thought Whidbey would be the best place to raise them. He was also drawn back to the island because his family owns the real estate office. “If I screw this up, holidays at my mom’s are going to be a little awkward,” McFadyen said with a laugh. So far, his employees think he’s doing a good job — or, more precisely, the “best” job. Of fice Manager Stephania Schleipman said McFadyen is always fair and supportive. “He’s always looking out for us,” Schleipman.

Not all employees would feel comfortable hiding creepy mannequins and doll heads in their boss’s bathroom or backyard. But when that boss is Jason McFadyen, it’s a regular occurrence. His ability to take (and a dish) a joke is part of the reason he’s been voted best boss in the 2019 Best of Whidbey competition. “We laugh a lot,” McFadyen said, sitting in his office at Windemere Real Estate in Oak Harbor, where he’s been managing broker for seven years. Above him looms a giant portrait of Kramer from Seinfeld. As long as his employees get the job done on time and do it well, he’s perfectly fine with some hijinks along the way. As a leader, he aims to avoid micromanaging but will help someone if he or she needs it. “Anytime we have an issue, he’s always there to listen and help deal with it,” Property Manager Jacklyn Allen said. In the three and a half years she’s been there, she’s had a number of angry property owners or renters, and McFadyen is always there to

He oversees eight people on his staff and is charged with bringing in new properties to be managed. “I get the business, they manage it,” he said, pointing to the next room, where several of his employees were. Every day is different and he appreciates the variable schedule.

But he said he mostly enjoys the job because he has employees who understand him. He has clear expectations about work being completed, but he maintains a very casual attitude around the office. “As long as everything gets done, it’s pretty laid back,” he said. Among all the adjectives his employees used to describe McFadyen, one stood out: best. “I worked for myself before,” Allen and, “and I like him better as a boss.”

Small-town divorce attorney is Whidbey’s favorite — again By JESSIE STENSLAND

In society at large — and especially in movies — divorce attorneys often suffer from a bad reputation. Yet longtime Coupeville attorney Molly McPherson is lionized by her clients and the community at large. She has been voted as top attorney in the Best of Whidbey contest year after year, always one step ahead of Oak Harbor attorney Chris Skinner. McPherson said helping people through divorce and child custody struggles is something she takes very seriously, but it can be gratifying work as well. “It might sound like a cliche, but it’s nice to be able to help people when they are in a really bad position,” she said. McPherson practices law in the historic building on Front Street where she was raised. Her parents ran a candy store, McPherson’s Confectionery, for years in the building. McPherson said it felt like she was destined to go to law school. After graduating Valedictorian from Coupeville High School she went to the University of Washington and

then law school at Seattle University. She returned to Coupeville and opened a law firm that quickly became successful. Her mother, Joan McPherson, went to law school when she was 49 years old and became a superior court judge. Molly McPherson’s mother joined her in 1997, and they opened a general law practice called McPherson & McPherson. Their ran their law firm based on the principles of “mutual respect, regard for the law, straightforward legal advice, and ethical, vigorous legal representation.” Her mother is no longer practicing, but Molly McPherson is still going strong, even with three kids in school. McPherson obtained a masters in law degree in taxation. In the past she represented clients in a wide range of cases, including criminal cases, but nowadays focuses mainly on divorce law — though she also does some wills and probate. As a divorce attorney, she is in the unique position to be able to help people who are going through the most difficult period of their lives. The cases can be very emotional, especially when children are involved.

People with Alzheimer’s can still enjoy having visitors

Don’t let Dementia or Alzheimer’s rob you of pleasant visits with your friend or family member. It takes a little practice but it’s entirely possible to experience rewarding visits and have a rewarding conversation with them. Here are a few simple tips from the Alzheimer’s Association to help improve your next visit. Limit visitors to 1 or 2 people at a time. Too many people can be overwhelming. Schedule visits for the time of day when your older adult is usually at their best. Minimize distractions by keeping the environment calm and quiet. Turn off the TV or loud music and ask any non-visitors to go to another room. Keep your tone and body language friendly and positive. Don’t speak too loudly.

Make eye contact and stay at their eye level. Introduce yourself even if you’re sure they must know you. “Hi Grandma, I’m Joe, your grandson.” Speak slowly and in short sentences with only one idea per sentence. For example: “Hi Mary. I’m Jane, your friend.” or “What a beautiful day. The sunshine is nice, isn’t it?” or “Tell me about your daughter.” Give them extra time to speak or answer questions, don’t rush the conversation. Use open-ended questions because there are no right or wrong answers. Be ok with sitting together in silence. They may enjoy that just as much as talking. • Follow their lead, don’t force conversation topics or activities. • Validate their feelings. Allow them to

express sadness, fear, or anger. • Enter their reality. Go with the ﬂ ow of the conversation even if they talk about things that aren’t true or don’t make sense. • Share and discuss memories of the past. They’re more likely to remember things from long ago. • Come prepared with an activity, like something to read out loud, a photo album to look at, or some of their favorite music to listen to. • Give hugs, gentle touches, or massage arms or shoulders if the person gives permission and enjoys it. DON’T • Say “do you remember?” This can cause

anger or embarrassment. • Argue. If they say something that’s not correct, just let it go. • Point out mistakes. It just makes them feel badly and doesn’t help the conversation. • Assume they don’t remember anything. Many people have moments of clarity. • Take mean or nasty things they say personally. The disease may twist their words or make them react badly out of confusion, fear, or anger. • Talk down to them. They aren’t children and you should show the proper respect. • Talk about them with other people as if they’re not there.
