How does KONP organize and pull off the largest annual exhibition event on the Olympic Peninsula, despite having a staff of less than a dozen people? They prepare almost year-round and enlist the help of professional event planning specialists and local service club volunteers. “We love the Clallam County Home and Lifestyle Show, and this year’s event will be every bit as special as people have come to expect,” said KONP Sales Manager Stan Comeau. “Spring is right around the corner and we anticipate this year’s event to be bigger than ever.” Organization for the 38th annual KONP Home and Lifestyle Show started last March, immediately following last year’s show at Port Angeles High School. Comeau noted, “It’s almost getting to be an ongoing year-round process,” as staff teamed up to look at what went right last year and eyed possible improvements. Last summer, KONP sales and marketing specialists began contacting exhibitors, looking for those interested in returning for the 2020 event, then marketing for replacement vendors to sell out the show.

While many stalwart local businesses have returned to the same booth locations at the Home Show, Comeau said KONP attempts to “keep the show fresh” with new faces, including many startup ventures each year, both from local and Puget Sound areas. The transformation of the Port Angeles High School gymnasiums from an athletic facility to the Clallam County Home & Lifestyle Show venue starts Thursday night prior to the event. Once Saturday morning rolls around, the Clallam County Home and Lifestyle Show doors open for thousands of Peninsula residents who take advantage of the free admission. KONP staff welcomes the event kickoff. “We can kind of relax [once the show starts] because the show sort of takes care of itself,” Comeau said. “The exhibitors — that’s their time to shine. It’s all about them, and we’re just there as a caretaking role, to observe and be available.” The Clallam County Home & Lifestyle Show will take place Saturday, March 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. BATHROOM REMODEL REMOVES BATH PROJECT SUBMITTED BY DIANE GROVE AND DONNA ATWOOD OF SEQUIM Although our bathroom still functioned fine, we found that we didn’t have a need for a bathtub in the master bathroom and the shower was very small. So, to give us more space for a larger shower we removed the jetted tub and separate, small, square shower. We replaced them with a tiled walk-in shower with a pony wall and glass blocks. In the shower we now have a rain shower head and separate wand shower head as well as a bench seat. We chose to add safety rails inside the shower and at the walk-in entrance, even though the need for them could still be years away. We designed the shower to be long enough that no shower door would be needed, added heated tile floors and a new chair-height toilet. We hired Justin from Sun City Builders of Sequim and were very impressed with him from the beginning, during the bid process and all the way through the final walk through. We had a rudimentary design of what we wanted and he made it happen. Justin and his work partner were prompt each day and worked diligently through the day with minimal to no breaks. He completed the project within the three-week schedule as promised. They removed all the old items that needed to be disposed of and the debris from the construction was dealt with promptly. They left the work area and bathroom in a pristine condition. We couldn’t be happier with our end result.

Vegetable gardeners: Start your engines! Begin planning your garden now BY JEANETTE STEHR-GREEN The North Olympic Peninsula is notorious for its short growing season. Its long, cool springs and early arrival of fall-like temperatures make it difficult to grow some vegetables. You can get a jump on the growing season, however, by starting some of your vegetables from seed indoors. 10  FEBRUARY 2020 | HOME & GARDEN

INDOOR SEEDING CANDIDATES

Vegetables typically started indoors include crops that grow slowly but cannot be planted until the weather warms, such as eggplants, peppers and tomatoes, and cool-weather crops that do not germinate well in cool, wet soils, such as cabbage family

members (including kale, broccoli and cauliflower), leeks and chard. Little benefit is realized from starting fast-growing cool-weather crops indoors, such as lettuce, spinach and radishes. These and crops that do not transplant well, such as those with large seeds (such as beans, peas and corn) or large taproots (such as

carrots) are usually seeded directly into the garden.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

You want your seedlings to be ready to go in the ground as soon as the weather permits, but you don’t want these “starts” to outgrow their containers while you wait for outdoor conditions to improve. Peninsula Daily News / Sequim Gazette

To decide when to plant, first determine the approximate date that you can transplant the newly grown seedlings into the garden. Cool-weather crops can go into the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. Warm-weather plants usually need to wait until the threat of frost is well past and temperatures are consistently warm. If you do not know the best time to plant outdoors, consult the seed packet. Then calculate how long it will take the vegetable to grow from a seed to a transplantable size. Based on the information on the seed’s package, add up the days required for the following steps: • time from planting the seed to sprouting (known as the “days to germination”) (typically five to 20 days) plus • time from seedling to a strong start (usually six to 10 weeks) plus • acclimation time for the plant to become accustomed to outside conditions before planting it in the ground (see “transplant shock” below). Using the sum of these numbers, count backwards from the desired outdoor planting date; that’ll give you a good idea of when you need to start your seeds indoors. In general, on the North Olympic Peninsula, cool-weather crops can be started indoors in January and February for planting out in late March, and warm-weather crops can be started in mid-March for planting out in late May/early June.

OLD SEEDS: TO USE OR NOT TO USE? Over time, seeds lose their ability to germinate and produce healthy plants. If stored in cold, dark, dry conditions, most seeds are good for a couple of years. If you want to use seeds from previous growing seasons, but don’t know their age or whether they were stored properly, you can determine their viability by doing a germination test. 1. Spread 10 to 25 seeds from the pack on a stack of two or three moist paper towels; 2. Roll up the towels loosely and seal them in a plastic bag or container; 3. Keep the bag or container in a warm place (70-80 degrees) and wait for the seeds to germinate. Check the seeds periodically to see how many have sprouted. Allow up to a week after the expected days to germination (printed on the seed packet) for the seeds to sprout. If at least half of the seeds germinate, the seeds can be used, but you might want to sow them thicker than you normally would. If less than 50 percent germinate, it would be best to discard them. Planting seeds that do not germinate or grow well is a waste of your time. Worse yet, it could delay getting your garden in the ground.

PLANTING MATERIALS

Before planting the seeds, give some thought to the containers and soil. Just about anything that will hold soil and has drainage holes will work. Keep in mind that if the containers are very small, you might need to transplant your seedlings into larger containers before transplanting them into the garden. If the containers have been used previously, soak or drench them prior to planting with a solution of 1 part laundry bleach to 10 parts water. New containers do not require such treatment. Although you can use any good quality potting soil, commercial soilless seed-starting mixes, composed of vermiculite, peat and coconut coir (which is gaining in popularity), are highly recommended. It is good to wet the planting medium before use, especially these soilless seed-starting mixes, because they can repel water. Let the medium drain before planting. Peninsula Daily News / Sequim Gazette

2.

3.

SEED STARTING STEPS

Fill the containers with the moistened potting mix and tamp it down; add additional soil, if needed, but leave enough space at the top of the container for watering. Plant the seeds at the depth recommended on the seed packet. If you are unsure about the seeding depth, plant the seed twice as deep as its width. For insurance, some gardeners plant two or three seeds per container or cell. If all of the seeds germinate, they keep the healthiest seedling and snip off

the others at the soil line. This is especially wise if you’re using older seeds. Moisten the newly planted seeds with a mister or a small watering can. Cover the containers with plastic wrap or a plastic dome to help keep the soil moist before the seeds germinate. Place the newly planted seeds in a warm location (65 to 75 degrees). Heat mats made especially for seed starting can increase the speed of germination as well as the percentage of seeds that sprout. But they are not critical if

6.

7.

you have placed the newly planted seeds in a sufficiently warm spot. When the seedlings start to sprout, remove the plastic covering to allow for good airflow and move the seedlings to the sunniest spot in your home, often near a southfacing window. Water the seedlings when the soil surface dries; be careful not to overwater or wash the seedlings out of their containers. Do not allow the containers to stand in water. TRANSPLANTING YOUR STARTS Your starts can be transplanted into the garden when weather conditions are right for the plant and the seedling has a good root system. Do not, however, wait overly long to transplant them because the seedlings can outgrow their containers and become stressed. Prior to transplanting, water the seedlings so that the soil around the roots does not fall apart when you remove them from their containers. When you transplant, do not pull the seedlings out of their containers by the stem and try not to disturb the roots.

TROUBLESHOOTING Starting seeds indoors is relatively easy and most problems can be prevented with a little forethought. Damping off. Damping off is a fungal disease that causes young seedlings to wither and topple over. Once it appears, you cannot save those seedlings. To prevent damping off, maintain good air circulation over your seedlings and do not overwater them. If damping off occurs, remove the affected seedlings as soon as possible, dispose of the soil and clean the pots as directed above before using again. Leggy seedlings. If plants do not receive sufficient light, they will become spindly. Given our northern latitude and cloudy days, supplemental light is often needed. Suspend fluorescent lights or specially marketed “grow lights” two inches above your plants; raise the height of the lights as your

seedlings grow. Provide seedlings a total of 16 hours of light exposure daily, allowing them at least eight hours of dark. Transplant shock. Once seedlings are well established, gradually expose them to outdoor conditions before planting them in the ground (a process called “hardening off”). Start by placing seedlings in a shady, protected location outside for an hour or two. Each day, leave the plants out a little longer and expose them to a little more direct sunshine. After a week to 10 days, the starts will be ready for transplanting. Although you can buy many vegetable starts at local nurseries and retail stores, if you grow your own, you will have a bigger selection of crops and varieties, such as heirloom, newly released and novel varieties. You also can save money starting vegetables from seeds since you can buy several packs of seeds for the price of one six-pack of starts. Finally, starting seeds indoors can satisfy that late-winter-need-to-dig-inthe-dirt longing, a desire that hits most gardeners at this time of year. So, what are you waiting for?

Picking the right paint for your project Questions to ask yourself before starting BY ANGELES MILLWORK & HARTNAGEL BUIDLING SUPPLY When working at a paint counter, the question most often asked is, “What kind of paint should I buy?” The answer to that question is different with each customer, but it can usually be determined by considering three factors:

1. Where are you using the paint? 2. How much protection does the painted surface require? 3. How long would you like the sheen to last? By answering these three questions, you can narrow your focus to a few choices with minimal effort.

WHERE ARE YOU USING THE PAINT?

We can answer this question in two parts. The first consideration is whether you are painting

inside or outside. Exterior paints and interior paints have different formulas created to make them protect and last in their intended environment. Exterior paints tend to focus on UV resistance and flexibility in order to avoid cracking as the temperature outside rises and falls. Interior paints tend to be more focused on washability and holdout (how long your sheen will last). Some paints are formulated to withstand frequent washing and scrubbing without much loss of sheen, whereas others are not. As a general rule, if you want a paint that will hold up to frequent scrubbing, avoid paints at the low end of the price spectrum. The second part of the question is what part of the building you will be painting. Most interior walls are painted in either an eggshell or satin sheen, whereas bathrooms and kitchens are typically painted in a semi-gloss to provide extra washability and protection. The higher the sheen level, the more protection your paint provides. This leads us to question No. 2… PAINT CONTINUES ON PAGE 18 >>

HOW MUCH PROTECTION DOES THE PAINTED SURFACE REQUIRE?

Some parts of our homes need more protection than others. For most of your home, a high-quality latex paint will do just fine. There are, however, exceptions: Your front door, kitchen cabinets and floor trim can benefit from the added protection of an enamel paint instead of latex. In the past, enamels had a longer drying time than latex paints, but with new water/oil hybrid enamels (also called waterborne alkyds) you can get the extra protection you need without the extended dry times. These products can cost a bit more than latex paints but are well worth the extra cost. Another consideration is humidity. Bathrooms and washrooms can be at higher risk for mold, mildew and fungi. If you want to keep your home free of these pesky microbes, consider paints and primers that contain mildewcides and antimicrobials. Packets of mold inhibitors can be purchased and mixed into paints at nearly any paint counter. PAINT CONTINUES ON PAGE 19 >>

HOW LONG WOULD YOU LIKE THE SHEEN TO LAST? Obviously if we had the choice, the beautiful shine and soft glow of our paint would last forever. Sadly, no paint holds its luster forever. Here is where price comes into play. We all know that you get what you pay for, but this is especially true in the world of paint. Odds are, if you buy a lower-end product, you’re not going to get a decade’s worth of holdout from it. Ask yourself, “How long do I need this to look like new?” Is your project a rental property, a fixer-upper for a quick flip, or is it your dream house? If you are planning on repainting in a few years or are selling your house, then the more affordable options will suit your needs just fine. If, however, you are only planning on painting once this decade, then a high-quality paint is what you want. Remember, the cost of labor (or your own time) should be considered alongside the material expense. More expensive paints can leave you

scratching your head asking, “Why is this one so much more than the others?” Longevity is the answer. Higher-quality paints keep their sheen much longer than ordinary paints, not only providing excellent protection, but keeping your home beautiful as well. A new paint project can be daunting, but knowing the answers to these three questions will steer you in the right direction and take some of the stress out of selecting the “right” paint. If you feel like you’re getting in over your head, drop by your local paint counter and have a chat with a paint specialist. Chances are they can not only answer your questions, but they’ll also give you some great tips on preparation and technique.
