Picnic serves up food and fun
Motorcycle accident claims life of Whidbey sailor By JUSTIN BURNETT
Whidbey News Times
The search for a missing Naval Air Station Whidbey Island sailor ended late Friday when his body was discovered in a yard off Yates Road. Nikolas “Nik” Ngo, 21, was found at about 5 p.m., according to Lt. Tim Sterkel of the Oak Harbor Police Department. A 911 caller noticed the wreckage of Ngo’s motorcycle and notified authorities. Ngo, an enlisted man with Maritime Patrol Squadron (VP) 69, had been missing since Sept. 7. “It’s always a tragedy when you lose anyone in the Navy family,” said Navy Public

aturday’s 10th annual military appreciation picnic served up heaping doses of soda pop, hot dogs, pulled pork, and fun for the several hundred family members and guests who attended the free event held at Oak Harbor’s Windjammer Park. This year’s picnic was blessed with beautiful weather, a great turnout, and a reminder, if anyone needed it, of why America appreciates her military: Towering above the picnic tables, tents, and crowds, was a huge American flag that hung draped between the crossed ladders of two fire trucks for a 9/11 memorial.
The picnic was a way to show gratitude to military members and their families. The recipients responded in kind with a grace and style that complemented their professional calling. There was Yvette Esparza, Navy wife and mom, helping her kids paint crafts at the “Paint Your World” table. “This picnic is a wonderful idea,” said Esparza, wife of EOC Noah Esparza. She explained that her husband is currently serving in Bahrain. “It’s especially timely, since our husbands are deployed right now; this helps our kids feel connected.” That sentiment was echoed by many others. AD1 Charles Khulenberg and AWS2 William Rush were there with their families, as well as Rush’s dog, Blue. “We’re out here with our families, just enjoying the extra weekend of summer,” said Khulenberg, referring to the pleasant 70-degree-plus temperatures and sunny skies. Both men said the pulled pork picnic lunch and soda “tasted great.” “Now we’re heading over to check out the cars,” said Rush, referring to a car
show event taking place at the west end of Windjammer Park. Yuko Morrow, wife of NCSC Ken Morrow, watched as her son, Kody, tossed a boomerang to his friend, Jonah. “This is a great service to all of us,” said Morrow. “It’s been good food and fun all afternoon today.” Topping off the enjoyable day were the great sounds of live music by El Colonel Blues and Paid ‘N Full that filled the air. From jazz to country to classic rock, vocalists backed by guitars, saxophone, drums, and flute offered songs for everyone’s listening enjoyment. The natural beauty of the setting, and the pleasant weather, made for a stellar occasion. Swimmers filled the lagoon, and sun-bathing abounded in the nearlyperfect temperatures. AZ2 E.J. Rupert, his wife, Tiffany, and sons Quincy and Dylan were just finishing up their picnic. “The food was delicious; just great,” said Rupert. Tiffany added, “We’re going

t was a homecoming in two parts, but by late Friday afternoon, all members of the Cougars, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 139, were home. The jets arrived at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Wednesday afternoon, amid cheers, hugs and kisses. Crew members disembarked one plane at a time, leaving some loved ones to wait just a little while longer until the last plane was secured. Kathryn Jones, wife of Cougar commanding officer, Cmdr. Russ Jones, was on hand with 11-year-old Hannah and 2-anda-half-year-old Eli. The couple’s 8-year-old son, Ryan, was on a Tiger Cruise with his grandfather. “The hardest part (of a deployment) is watching your children miss their dad,” she said. “We picked this life — they don’t have any choice.” Jones said it’s surprised her that as their children get older, deployments get harder, because Dad has been able to spend time with them, coaching their sports teams and being a regular part of the children’s lives. “They get used to having him around, so it’s hard when he’s gone,” she said. “But at the same time, they’re very proud.” The Cougars returned from a sevenmonth deployment on the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), in which the EA-6B Prowler squadron took part in three worldwide operations — responding as part of Operation Tomodachi following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and supporting Operations New Dawn and Enduring Freedom. Family members said technology helped
make the separation easier. “You know what’s awesome is Skype,” said Jessica Kjenaas, who was waiting to welcome her husband, Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey Kjenaas. “Every time they were in port we got to Skype. You feel so much more connected.” Lt. Keith Drown could not get home soon enough for his wife, Ashley, who said playing the role of a single parent to Cassidy, 4, and Chase, 19 months, was tough. “This day could not come fast enough,” she laughed.
Part two The anticipation was repeated Friday afternoon, as family members waited anxiously for the arrival of the rest of the Cougar’s maintenance and support personnel. Heather Alvarez and her husband, Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Cesar, spent their first anniversary apart. “We’re going to do birthdays, anniversary and Christmas all at once,” she said. This will be her first and last deployment, Heather said, as Cesar will leave the Navy in a few months and transfer to the Army Air National Guard. “Knowing he’s coming home for good is a little intimidating,” she said with a smile. “I don’t quite know what to do with this man who will be underfoot for the next 40 years.” Lorili McDowell said she and her husband, Logistics Specialist Second Class James McDowell, prepared for his long separation from her and their son, 15-month-old Thomas, by making lots of videos of James reading bedtime stories. “We did everything we could possibly

Now he’s walking, jumping and running.” Friends Chrystal Tidwell and Sonia Pena were there waiting for their husbands - best friends who met in boot camp - to come home. It was the first deployment for both of them. Tidwell’s husband, Aviation Structural Mechanic (Safety Equipment) Daeshawn left when his daughter, Taniyah, was 22 days old. “It was my first deployment and my first baby,” Tidwell said. “It was just hard doing everything by myself.” “He’s always been my rock. Not having him here has been really tough,” said Pena of her husband Nathan, an Aviation Machinist’s Mate.

Patrol and reconnaissance mission in slow transition By K ATHY REED
Whidbey Crosswind
According to the chief staff officer of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10, the maritime patrol community is in a state of transition. Capt. John Radka was the guest speaker last week during the monthly Navy League meeting at the Officers’ Club on NAS Whidbey. He said while the maritime patrol community is small, it makes up about a third of the population of tenant commands currently housed at NAS Whidbey. Radka said the community is undergoing a
transition to a “family of systems,” including the P-8 and BAMS (Broad Area Maritime Surveillance) unmanned aircraft. “In addition to new aircraft, there will eventually be changes to come down the road,” he said. “There are several different platforms, equipment upgrades and personnel structure changes that come along with the “family of systems.” According to Radka, the current program of record calls for reducing the present fleet of 154 P-3 Orions to 117 P-8 Poseidons by fiscal year 2021. For NAS Whidbey, the official program of record calls for standing up four squadrons

constantly reviewed and evaluated for efficiency every fiscal year. “It’s one of those political climate things that is hard
to predict,” he said. “As we eventually transition to the P-8, obviously budget constraints will determine how many of those 117 we get.” Whether or not the program of record changes, the patrol and reconnaissance mission has not changed and is likely to become more robust, according to Radka. Maintaining a fleet of aircraft for training across the entire fleet will be key. “All NAS Whidbey Island VP and VQ aircrews are trained locally then deployed, so it’s critical to have the training equipment and aircraft in place,” Radka said. “And the importance of ensuring personnel receive realistic,
robust and effective simulator training will increase as well.” In the days of budget tightening that are likely ahead, it means streamlining functionality in both equipment and personnel. The Navy is looking at being able to integrate new operating systems into the P-8 while currently consolidating one VQ squadron and one special projects squadron. “We will have a slight reduction in personnel with the consolidation of VQ and VPU but virtually no change to the number of aircrews,” Radka said. “Like everything else in Naval Air, we’ll work our way through it.”
Summit Assistance Dogs takes third Group will use cash prize to fund new program for veterans By K ATHY REED
Whidbey Crosswind
Whidbey Crosswind readers helped push Summit Assistance Dogs of Anacortes into third place in the second annual Local Pepsi Refresh Project, sponsored by Walton Beverage and the Whatcom Community Foundation. Summit will receive $4,000 to help with start up costs for its new S.O.S. (Serving our Soldiers) program, which will provide service dogs for wounded soldiers or those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Three dozen local nonprofit organizations within Walton Beverage’s distribution area of Northern Island, Skagit, Whatcom and San Juan counties participated in the competition. Members of the public voted online for their favorite proposal. The four organizations with the most votes were granted prizes ranging from $10,000 for first place to $2,000 for fourth. In addition to the online voting, people could turn in receipts for Pepsi products purchased. Each dollar spent was worth one “power vote.” Those power votes are what helped push Summit into third place, according to
Kaitlin Isle, marketing and special projects coordinator with Walton Beverage. “Purely based on online vote, Summit was in eighth place, but the power votes bumped them up to third,” said Isle. “They were very close to second. They had almost $850 in receipts.” “While we had hopes of winning the big prize, this $4,000 will still go a long ways towards launching this veterans program,” said Erik Mann, a development associate for Summit Assistance Dogs. “We still have a long way to go in developing all the details of the program, but are hopeful to be placing dogs with veterans by the end of 2012.” Summit also recently won a 2011 Toyota Prius as part of the Toyota 100 Cars for Good initiative. The car will be presented to Summit at a ceremony Monday in Burlington.

OUR VIEWS
Let the fur fly I have decided, after just over two years of marriage to a wonderful man, that our household will never achieve total peace among our pets. We are a blended feline family, you see. We each happily owned two cats before we got married, which means we now have four. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to have four cats. In the same house. They are not outdoor cats, although one of them thinks he’d like to be every now and then. A few minutes in the great outdoors and he can’t wait to get back inside where it’s safe. Safety, of course, is relative when he has two adopted kitty sisters who hate him with a passion. KATHY My, how the fur flew when we first brought our felines REED together! It doesn’t fly as often these days, which may be giving us a false sense of security. Hissing seems to be a constant background noise. We’ve gotten so used to it that we only get involved when it escalates to spitting and growls. Occasionally they forget they hold an intense hatred for one another and they’ll actually sit peacefully a few inches apart. They don’t know this, but I have even seen them start to play with each other a few times. As soon as they realize what they’ve done, they shake it off and begin grooming themselves. So when I read Dr. J.M. Keil’s column this week, I could relate. Digestive issues with one cat can be bad enough — digestive issues with four has me scrambling regularly for the hand-held carpet cleaner and calculating the cost of wood floors. In the end, it appears we will just have to live with their occasional tummy troubles. Kitties are complicated creatures, but I wouldn’t trade any of ours for the world. Besides, all four of our felines have a new common bond, one that has united them in a way they probably never expected — they all hate the dog. -Kathy Reed, editor

Why does my cat get sick?
T
his is one of the most common concerns that owners of cats bring to OR me. It’s such a common problem that Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate AKE Thesaurus lists “cat” as a synonym for vomit – honest! I wish that there was an easy answer for every cat that presents with the problem of intermittent DVM vomiting, but like most problems, including medical ones, there is rarely an easy answer for a complex issue. Many people start with the assumption that the problem is simply hairballs, and hairballs can cause problems, including intestinal obstruction in some cases. In case you missed it, April 29 was National Hairball Awareness Day – honest! If you need planning details for next year’s event as well as scads of other cat tips visit www.cattipper.com. Hairballs are caused by excessive shedding, which

a cat then ingests as they groom themselves. The hair can then cause irritation of the stomach and GI ETS tract resulting in vomiting. The most effective way to help reduce the problem is to comb your cat on a daily basis. Most cats learn to enjoy the sensation. I recommend a metal IEL flea comb, which gets down to the skin and does a good job of removing dead hair and stimulating the skin, but there are a number of commercial products on the market as well. Another thing to consider is adding fish oil or other oils high in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to help improve your cat’s hair coat. These fatty acids are also heart healthy and promote normal joint health as well so they are a great nutritional supplement to consider in any cat. There are a number of hairball diets and over-the-counter hairball remedies that can be

PETS | FROM PAGE 4 used, but usually grooming and fatty acid supplementation are all that is necessary. If not, then the vomiting may be related to another issue. Once people get beyond hairballs they almost always think next of food allergies or food sensitivities and so begin switching foods in an effort to find something that will keep their cat from vomiting. Food allergy is a problem in cats. The most common ingredients that cats can become allergic to are beef, chicken, fish, eggs and milk. The common symptoms of cats with food allergies are related to the skin (ear infections, severe itching with scabs and secondary infections). Vomiting is NOT a common symptom of food allergy. The only way to determine if your cat has a food allergy is to do a food trial for 8 to 12 weeks using a
hypoallergenic diet that contains ingredients which your cat has never been exposed to. The bad news is that after you spend the time and effort to find out what your cat is allergic to they can go on and develop new food allergies over time. After considering hairballs and food allergy we are left with the many medical conditions for which vomiting IS a common symptom. One condition that has been linked to chronic intermittent vomiting is obesity. Some of these cats are food obsessive and eat their food so quickly that they regurgitate it fairly undigested. One strategy to help these cats is to either feed them small amounts at regular intervals or to place some large, smooth, clean rocks in their food bowl so they have to slow down and pick their food out to eat it. As we continue up the ladder of complexity other medical conditions that need to be considered include

liver and kidney disease, cancers of the stomach and GI tract as well as a number of autoimmune-like problems such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis, and eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Often these medical conditions are also accompanied by weight loss in addition to the vomiting. Once you start considering these conditions your cat will need to undergo some diagnostic testing to help to get to an accurate diagnosis. Vomiting in cats is a common problem. Finding the reason why your cat is vomiting is not always easy and I would recommend enlisting the help of your cat’s veterinarian to help find out the cause. Cassidy Drown, 4, claps in excitement as she sees members of VAQ-139 return to NAS Whidbey Island Sept. 7. Maintenance and support personnel returned Friday. KATHY
COUGARS | FROM PAGE 2 Kimber Meade, an Aviation Machinist’s Mate Airman, won a ‘First Kiss’ drawing so her husband Andrew, an Aviation Electrician’s Mate Third Class, was the first sailor off the plane. But the homecoming was a little bittersweet for the dual Navy couple. “I’m getting ready to deploy with VP-1 (Maritime Patrol Squadron) in two or three months,” Kimber said. Cmdr. Jones greeted each sailor as he got off the plane, but it was his wife, Kathryn, who perhaps said it best. “We have an amazing group of Cougar families,” she said. This was VAQ-139’s last deployment in the Prowler. The squadron will soon begin training with VAQ129, Fleet Replacement Squadron, for its transition to the EA-18G Growler.

Joshua Hattery the Airborne Electronic Attack Integration Award for his efforts while serving in VAQ-139 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The award was created to recognize outstanding efforts in the integration of diverse airborne electronic attack systems. Recipients are commended for their ability to coordinate with various owners and users to increase electronic warfare effectiveness. “With a heritage of developing advanced electronic warfare system technology, Raytheon is dedicated to recognizing outstanding achieve-
ments in electronic warfare effectiveness,” said Nick Uros, vice president for Raytheon’s Next Generation Jammer program. “It’s an honor to salute Lt. Hattery for his contributions and commitment to improving airborne electronic attack systems.” Lt. Hattery was presented the Airborne Electronic Attack Integration Award on Aug. 20, during the Airborne Electronic Attack Ball, one of many events held during AEA Week at NAS Whidbey. t was a day made for reflection. The sun shone, the breeze was light, stirring a large American flag suspended from ladder trucks from the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and Oak Harbor Fire Departments, a truck from North Whidbey Fire and Rescue centered between them. Approximately 150 people, not including firefighters, turned out for Oak Harbor’s 9/11 memorial ceremony at Windjammer Park Sunday, quietly paying their respects to the 2,977 civilians, 23 New York City police officers, 37 port authority officers and 343 New York City firefighters who died in the terrorist attacks on our country 10 years earlier. Navy Region Northwest Fire and Emergency Services Battalion Chief Sean Merrill acted as master of ceremonies. “2,977 civilians walked out the door on what they thought was a normal work day, never to walk home again,” he said. “A lot has transpired since then. We’re gathered together as a community to remember that.”
Community effort The memorial was definitely a community effort. The colors were presented by Marines from the Marine Aviation Training Support Group 53 at NAS Whidbey, the National Anthem was sung by Sarah Reinstra and speakers included Island County Sheriff Mark Brown, Oak Harbor Mayor Jim Slowik, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue Chief Marv Koorn and Whidbey Island Naval Air Station commanding officer Capt. Jay Johnston. An emotional Capt. Johnston, who was assigned to the Pentagon at the time of the attack, shared his experiences with the crowd, speaking without notes, pausing occasionally to hold back tears, but in the end praising the work of the first responders and everyone involved in putting the Pentagon back together. “It was a mess for weeks and weeks. It was a testimony to teamwork,” Johnston said. “We talk about Team

“... Whether it’s a terrorist strike or a heart attack, they expect to see first responders running in while others are running out.” – Chief Marv Koorn Whidbey here, but I think it was Team USA back then. That may sound like a cliche, but we had first responders and urban search and rescue teams from all over the country converging on the Pentagon and I know you did the same in New York. “Thank you for all you do,” he continued. “We witness it every day. You guys stand 24/7 watch and then some, both on the military side and the civilian side. I don’t know what they pay you, but it’s not enough, so my hat’s off to you.” Johnston described how watching firefighters unrolling a giant flag from the top of the Pentagon building became his defining moment. “I wasn’t at Iwo Jima when they planted the flag, but I kind of believe it was a lot like that,” he said. “It was a symbol that we’d taken control of the situation; we’d taken control of the fight and I’d like to think we’ve had control of the fight ever since, although the war has been going on for a while.”
Sign of the times Chief Koorn reflected on how terms like “terrorist attack” and “situational awareness” have now become part of our country’s vernacular, but that the expectations for first responders haven’t changed. “That fateful day in 2001, the world saw the undying courage and the unfailing response of firefighters, first responders, law enforcement officers, military and citizens all working together to save other people,” Koorn said. “Always remember, people look to us as first responders “Serving all your automotive needs on Whidbey Island from 1990 - 2007, I’m back in the area! when all hope is lost. Whether it’s a terrorist strike or a heart attack, they expect to see the first responders running in while others are running out.” “You cannot help it — it’s in your DNA. The need to get involved, the high sense of civic spirit and duty, and the dedication to the protection of life and property,” said Mayor Slowik. “That is what you do as first responders. You are the heroes of this community.” Sheriff Brown recalled the feeling of unity sparked by the attacks. “I do remember how engaged citizens became immediately following Sept. 11. How they suddenly became observant in identifying suspicious behavior, how they became concerned for their neighbor’s welfare, how they developed a patriotic sentiment that reflected a feeling of solidarity as well as unity,” Brown said. Prioritizing public safety and ensuring proper training for first responders is how we can pay homage to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, Brown said.
Tolling of the bell A traditional bell ceremony followed the speakers. “When a firefighter has had his or her last ride, we ring the bell,” said Merrill, explaining the series of five measured dashes and pauses that make up the ‘tolling of the bell.’ “This signal was a sign of honor and respect for all firefighters who had made the ultimate sacrifice and it has become a time honored tradition for the fire service. Today we will ring the bell for all first responders all civilians and all military who have made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11.” Following the clear chime of the bell, two members of the Island County Firefighters Pipes and Drums performed a bagpipe version of “Amazing Grace,” and two parachutists glided into the park, trailing an American and MIA/POW flag, and bringing the 10th anniversary observance of 9/11 to a close.

PICNIC | FROM PAGE 1 to walk around a little now, and enjoy some of the activities going on for the kids.” And there were a lot of things for kids to do. Small children flocked to the bounce houses set up by the windmill in Windjammer Park. Others enjoyed face painting, balloon animals, craft painting, and a variety of games. Those who felt more daring made their way over to the rock climbing wall by the lagoon. Clinton Brown, 8, son of former MA2 George Brown, proved that courage comes in small packages, as he fearlessly made his way to the top. “It was an awesome thing to see,” said his dad. Climbers were coaxed on by the encouraging directions and advice called up to them by the spotters positioned at ground level: “Reach up above your head — that’s it,” “Keep going,” and then, “Great job!” This picnic abounded with examples of the military helping and encouraging their own. Like many of the climbing wall monitors, they gladly stepped up to volunteer their time and enthusiasm for Saturday’s event.

Molly DeLeon, the skee roll game operator, doled out equal amounts of prizes and complimentary remarks to the youngsters lined up to take turns at her game. Frisbees, bracelets, wind-up toys, boomerangs, and more were there for the taking — and even those who weren’t so lucky, still took home a consolation prize. “That’s okay, here’s some-

Area business sponsors included Costco and Whidbey Island Bank. Oak Harbor’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Whitehead-Muzzall Post donated the beverages.
