Shadowhawksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; commander relieved of duty The commanding officer of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 141 has been relieved of duty by Commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, while operating in the Gulf of Oman Tuesday, according to a release from the U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs Office. Cmdr. Karl Pugh was relieved by Capt. Jeffery A. Davis following non-judicial punishment proceedings for an alcohol-related incident that occurred July 12 during a port visit to Manama, Bahrain. VAQ-141 executive officer, Cmdr. Michael J. Miller, has assumed command of the squadron.

NASWI gears up for aviation centennial By K ATHY REED

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is preparing to celebrate the Centennial of Naval Aviation in grand style, with its first public event of this magnitude since its 60th anniversary celebration in 2002. The main celebration will take place Saturday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with activities at both the Ault Field Base and Seaplane Base. The public event gets underway with a 5K Flightline Run at 9 a.m. on Ault Field. Runners should be at the start line

at 8 a.m. Online registration is available through 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 27. Cost to pre-register is $25. Those who register on race day must do so in person, at least one hour prior to start time. Cost to register the day of the race is $30. The price includes a commemorative T-shirt, chip timing and a commemorative coin for all finishers. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each age group. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors to Ault

Field can spend the day walking through static displays of military aircraft, ranging from vintage World War II planes to modern Navy jets, patrol aircraft and helicopters. Navy Search and Rescue will perform an over land rescue demonstration on Ault Field Base at 11 a.m. and an over water rescue will be demonstrated at noon on Seaplane Base. There will be classic cars on display at both locations as well, and

EVENT| FROM PAGE 1 Whidbey Island Radio Control Society will be conducting demonstrations at Ault Field throughout the day. Another event highlight at Seaplane Base will be the 2 p.m. splash down of a PBY Catalina in Crescent Harbor. The PBY was one of the first planes to arrive at NAS Whidbey and is generally hailed as one of the most useful and versatile aircraft of the second World War. According to NAS Whidbey’s commanding officer, there will be no shortage of things to see and hear. “They’ll see a lot of old airplanes and be able to take a look at them. Some planes will be all painted up. There will be a Growler there, and a

number of old warbirds,” said Capt. Jay Johnston. “There will be some good speakers, too, who can relay stories of the good ol’ days.” Tales of Naval Aviation will take place in Hangar One, and will feature various speakers throughout the day, ranging from survivors of the Battle of Midway to those who conducted combat operations in Vietnam and Korea, to authors who have written about World War II battles, the A-6 Intruder and about the Navy in Puget Sound. The first speaker will take the stage at 10:30 a.m. There will be no shortage of entertainment for children, either. There will be the ever-popular bouncy toys, a climbing wall and carnival games all day in the Kids Zone, which will

be located in Haviland Hangar. There will also be clowns and face painting from noon to 3 p.m. Seattle’s Museum of Flight will present its traveling show, Flying Gizmos, at 10: 30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Predators of the Heart, Washington’s largest traveling wildlife exhibit, will have shows at 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Those interested can also stroll through the exhibit of Centennial of Naval Aviation quilts. Local quilting groups will also be on hand to demonstrate and answer questions. For those who can’t go home without a souvenir to commemorate the day, squadrons will be selling patches, hats, mugs and other memorabilia. Food and concessions will be available at the Ault Field location only.

Centennial Program: A special section covering NAS Whidbey Island’s aviation celebration will appear in the July 27 issue of the Whidbey News-Times and in the July 29 issue of the Whidbey Crosswind.

Other Events: There are a few Centennial events scheduled leading up to the grand event on July 30: Thursday, July 28 Golf Tournament at Gallery Golf Course: The Centennial of Naval Aviation golf tournament is full. However, reservations are being accepted for a waiting list. If enough reservations are made, officials say they will open an afternoon tournament. The event is open to the public. Island life and its unique culture are on full display at this year’s Loganberry Festival. The 22nd annual event will be held Saturday and Sunday at the historic Greenbank Farm. “Back to the Farm” is this year’s theme, and it encompasses food plus a whole lot more, according to festival volunteer director Faith Wilder. “Nurturing what is best about the land and lifestyle of Whidbey is what the farm is all about,” said Wilder. “That philosophy is reflected in our reinvigorating the Loganberry Festival to reflect an amazing community — the organizations, arts, foods and entertainment that make the island and the farm so special.” It wouldn’t be Whidbey without the Navy and this year local sailors from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island have helped in a big way. Public affairs spokesman Tony Popp said their volunteers will be involved with everything from cooking hamburgers to supervising the pie-eating contest.

COURTESY PHOTO BY MARY JO STANSBURY “In fact, we’re looking at a unique sort of partnership this year with the farm,” said Popp. “One that could perhaps serve as a model for future efforts. “After all the expenses are subtracted, the Navy and the farm will split the gross proceeds. The Navy volunteers can pick their choice of nonprofit organizations to receive donations. The farm will be able to keep their half of the proceeds to benefit their farmer training program,” he said. Other ways in which Navy personnel are helping include assisting children’s activities, overall set-up and take-down of equipment needed for food preparation and more. Farm publicity volunteer Victory Schouten called

the Navy volunteers’ spirit “amazing”. “We really appreciate the Navy’s generous participation” said Schouten. “We would love to encourage a great number of Navy families to come out and enjoy the festival. It is really very family-centric, and they would have a great time.” The festival itself has greatly expanded this year to include more than 100 booths and exhibitors, reflecting the farm’s role as a center for sustainable agriculture, recreation, environmental education

and small-scale economic development. There are a

Veterans stand down in Freeland The top of the flyer for the Veterans Stand Down Saturday in Freeland encourages people to “pass it on” if you know any veterans. I happen to know quite a few, so I figured this would be as good a way as any to spread the word. The Veterans Resource Center in Freeland is sponsoring the event, which will be held at its community center at 1796 Main St. from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Veterans from all eras are welcome to attend this event, which includes free screenings KATHY and referrals. There will also be information on enrollment and REED benefits, housing, loan counseling, vision and hearing screenings, mental health and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Veterans can also take advantage of free haircuts and/or free pet washes, and there will also be support services available for family members. Add to the mix barbecue, live music, demonstrations and giveaways, and it’s sure to be a wellattended event. I’ve had the opportunity to attend a few events at the Veterans Resource Center, and I have to say I have been impressed. The center’s board is made up of people who truly care about the veterans in our area, and there are a lot. The center’s mission is to make a difference and to connect Whidbey Island veterans to the resources to which they are entitled, and the volunteers do it with respect and courtesy. Those interested in attending Saturday’s event should bring along their DD-214, discharge papers, VA card or retired military ID. Traveling wall coming to Anacortes The American Veterans Traveling Tribute and Traveling Wall will be coming to Swinomish Casino in Anacortes Aug. 25 to 28. The mission of the project is to travel the nation to honor, respect and remember men and women who have served in the armed forces and to pay specific tribute to those who sacrificed their lives as part of that service. Because the tribute is mobile, people may visit the memorials without having to travel great distances. The centerpiece of the exhibit is the Traveling Wall, an 80-percent scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Its 370foot length contains all the names etched on the original. AVTT’s traveling wall is the largest replica in the United States. Several other memorials and exhibits are also included in the traveling exhibit. Visit www.avtt.

Hunter education class set for August The 2011 hunting season is approaching, and the Central Whidbey Sportsmen’s Association wants to make sure hunters are legal and trained. As part of its ongoing Firearms Safety Program, the CWSA is offering a hunter education class in early August. The course is free and all necessary materials will be furnished. Pre-registration is required. The class is open to all hunters, but in particular for those born after Jan. 1, 1972. According to Washington state law, individuals born after that date must show proof they have completed a hunter education class when purchasing a hunting license. The class consists of four sessions. Individuals must

attend all four sessions to receive a certificate of completion. Sessions will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 3 through Aug. 5, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 6. All sessions will be held at the CWSA clubhouse, located 2.5 miles south of Coupeville. PBY luncheon set for Tuesday The PBY Memorial Foundation will hold its monthly no host luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the CPO Club on Ault Field Road in Oak Harbor. Brown is a graduate of Oregon State University and holds a bachelor’s degree in science. He has served in the U.S. Navy and is a 30-year veteran of the Washington State Patrol.

Frederick Martin, a media officer with Commander, U.S. Navy Central Command Public Affairs in Bahrain. This is the second Whidbey Island squadron commander to be relieved of duty this year. Cmdr. Timothy Murphy, former commander of VAQ-129, was relieved of duty April 11, following a citation by Anacortes police for driving under the influence.

Pugh graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992. VAQ141, deployed Cmdr. Karl Pugh with CVW-8, is the first Growler squadron deployed on a carrier. The Shadowhawks are embarked on board USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), conducting support operations for Enduring Freedom and New Dawn, as well as maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

Navy to disestablish 29 NJROTC units

GREAT LAKES (NNS) — The Navy announced that it will disestablish 29 Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) units, effective June 30, 2012, including two Washington units. The 29 units are currently on probationary status for failure to meet statutory and regulatory minimum student enrollment standards. “Our goal is to maintain a high-quality program that ensures the full range of NJROTC activities are available for participating students across the nation and overseas,” said Rear Adm. David F. Steindl, commander, Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), which oversees more than 600 NJROTC units at accredited high schools across the nation. “We are extremely proud of what the NJROTC program offers participating students, so it was important for us to work with each non-compliant high school and continue to support the NJROTC program as long as possible. However, due to projected future funding levels, it is no longer possible to maintain NJROTC units that fail to meet minimum enrollment requirements and are not in compliance with program directives.” Steindle said. Title 10 United States Code, Chapter 102, Section 2031, and Department of Defense Directives require a minimum enrollment of qualified students for NJROTC units. NJROTC is a citizenship development program that instills in students at secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development. The classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, team competitions, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) seminars.

Running club builds strength on many levels Whidbey Island Running Club focuses on strength of body, mind and character By MELANIE HAMMONS

Everybody wants their kids to be physically fit and strong. Finding programs that emphasize strength of character served up with healthy doses of encouragement and sound advice can be more of a challenge. That’s the prescribed regimen at Whidbey Island Running Club, a year-round team founded in 2008 by coach Catie Rodeheffer and her husband, Bill. “It is such a privilege to be a facilitator for letting kids see that hard work produces results,” she said. WIRC is sanctioned by USA Track and Field, and supported by North Whidbey Parks and Recreation. The team has grown from 20 members at its inception to over 70. Members practice in groups at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. At least half the participants are from Navy families, said Catie, and quite a few are siblings. Team members are encouraged to participate in a variety of running events and track and field meets. These range from low-key fun runs and “all comers” meets all the way through regional and national Junior Olympic events.

Well-rounded training “The things we try to emphasize — sensible training, goal-setting, agility and strength — these carry over successfully to many other pursuits,” Catie said. “Running is a great springboard for all sports.” Some of the kids do

discover a passion for running. Others are there for the physical fitness aspect, and all appear to enjoy the camaraderie that results from shared group experiences. “My favorite thing about running club is the game time on Fridays,” said Kendall Sirak, 14, referring to the more informal fitness routines and games that WIRC follows at Friday practice. The coaches emphasize leadership skills, too. The kids take turns choosing and leading the calisthenics and strength-building exercises. Teamwork is also taught, especially when they are part of a relay team. Rodeheffer says the youths bring a variety of goals and expectations to the club. “I see kids, especially in the advanced group, whose goal is to make the nationals,” she said. “These are the kids who desire to take their fitness to the next level — that’s a goal I think is very reasonable. “For most of the other kids, there’s a desire to keep fit. I think that’s great as well, because if the goal is to keep moving, and participating, it will help them lay a foundation to achieve a baseline of physical fitness for life,” she continued. Some even see their social life blossom. Because of the teamwork and shared experiences, new friendships form. WIRC members benefit from the wealth of coaching experience the Rodeheffers have compiled over the years. “Bill has been coaching since 1983, and I started in 1985,” said Rodeheffer. “We’ve lived in a variety of

locations: Taiwan, South Dakota, and the Pacific Northwest. The common element is that we’ve coached and shared a passion for running wherever we’ve been.”

Many benefits WIRC holds an additional advantage, one that Rodeheffer says became apparent to her only recently. A Navy family in the process of moving to San Diego, Calif., was looking for a similar club for their three children. “She was very thankful for the experience her kids have had in our running club’s environment,” said Catie. “Because all the clubs she’s looked at in San Diego are try-out only.” Rodeheffer said that WIRC’s philosophy is quite different. “If anything, I envision a fitness program that’s accessible to all kids,” she said, “from those who are not athletic to those who desire to progress to high levels.” Parents seem pleased with WIRC’s approach to physical conditioning for their children. “Our daughter, Nikki, has seen her fitness level improve dramatically since joining WIRC,” said Tracey Blanchard. “What is extra nice is that Coach Catie and Coach Bill make the training so fun for the kids.” As if improving physical fitness, leadership skills, and general knowledge were not enough, WIRC takes on community projects as well. That is also something many parents support. “We appreciate the training and genuine concern that has been extended

to all the athletes,” said Master Chief Avionics Technician Chris Chelberg, whose daughter, Kaitlyn, competed in the 100-meter sprint at regionals. “We also really like the fact that the club gives back to the community by performing park cleanup at Fort Nugent once a month. This community gives us so much — it’s very important that we give back to them,” said Chelberg. This weekend, some club members will hit the road to attend Junior Olympic Nationals in Wichita, Kan. Temperatures there have been in the 100’s, Rodeheffer noted, quite different from Whidbey Island. The Rodeheffers plan to help WIRC members with techniques to beat the heat while staying
