embers of Holly Worrell’s Life Skills class at Oak Harbor High School got a special visit last Friday from Santa’s Elves — but these were very special elves indeed. Personnel from Patrol Squadron 40 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, including Cmdr. Brett Mietus, carried in armloads of gifts, winning delighted cries from students, which elicited big grins from the Fighting Marlins. The event was the brainchild of Naval Aircrewman Operator Second Class Glyn Schopen and his wife, Lonnie, whose son, Jayson, is in the class. “Every time we relocate, wherever it is, we adopt a class,” explained Lonnie. “When we got here we found out (Ms. Worrell) was buying class supplies out of her own money and we wanted to help.” The Schopens asked Worrell to make a “Christmas” list of all the supplies she needed. Glyn took it to his fellow Fighting Marlins. “I addressed the shop, telling them I’d like for us to raise money or donate gifts to help these kids out for Christmas,” Glyn said. “They were on board.” In all, VP-40 personnel raised $300 in cash and donated another $100 in gifts. The Schopens matched the amount and went shopping for items on the list. At the party, students opened packages containing items like Legos, small white boards, mops, plastic storage bins and much, much more. “It’s breath-taking. I did not expect this,” said Worrell, who has been at OHHS for about a year a half. “It’s going to be insanely helpful,”

Navy Band NW plays a merry melody By Kathy Reed Whidbey Crosswind
Anyone in need of a good dose of the holiday spirit had only to attend the “Home for the Holidays” concert by Navy Band Northwest last Saturday to feel infused and enthused. In a performance before a nearly packed crowd at the Oak Harbor High School performing arts center, Navy musicians and vocalists brought the holidays to life. The annual performance is a tradition for many in the community.

Yellow Jackets head home from Iraq Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 138, the Yellow Jackets, will be home just in time for the holidays. After a six-month expeditionary deployment in Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn, VAQ-138 is scheduled to return to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Friday. The squadron left last May on short notice, according to a release from NAS Whidbey Public Affairs, flying five EA-18G Growlers, marking only the second time an expeditionary Growler squadron has deployed.
“I had high expectations and they were exceeded,” said Cmdr. Tabb Stringer, VAQ-138 commanding officer. “The squadron’s professionalism was amazing, despite not knowing where or when we would deploy. The stress of that uncertainty never showed in people’s attitude or performance.” In their first deployment flying the Growler, the Yellow Jackets flew 785 missions and had more than 1,800 flight hours. Look for details of the homecoming in next week’s Whidbey Crosswind.

New leadership for Garudas By Lt. JOSHUA BROWN VAQ-134 Public Affairs
Cmdr. Gregory Byers has become the 34th commanding officer of Electronic Attack Squadron 134, following a ceremony on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) Dec. 8. Byers served as the squadron’s executive officer for 16 months before taking the helm as commander. The Garudas are currently on their second deployment on the Carl Vinson. A native of San Diego, Calif., Cmdr. Byers graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign in July, 1993 through Aviation Officer Candidate School. Cmdr. Byers is no stranger to NAS Whidbey, transferring to the Patriots of VAQ-140 after completing his initial Prowler FRS training with VAQ-129 in July, 2001. From the Patriots, Byers was selected for flight instructor duty, reporting to VAQ-129 in March, 2003. In October of 2004, Cmdr. Byers reported to VAQ-132 for his department head tour where he served as Quality Assurance Officer and Elec-
tronic Warfare Officer before assuming duties as Operations Officer. Cmdr. Gregory Byers He joined the squadron on deployment onboard the John F. Kennedy (CV 67) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. From there Byers reported to the Pentagon for duty on the Chief of Naval Operations staff in the Air Warfare
Directorate . In August 2010, Cmdr. Byers reported to VAQ134 as Executive Officer and began work-ups for the Garudas’ first carrierbased deployment in 16 years. VAQ-134 completed a seven-month deployment onboard the Carl Vinson (CVN 70) in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn in June. The squadron deployed again Nov. 30. He has accumulated over 3,000 hours of flight time in eight different Naval aircraft. He and his wife, Tiffany, have two children, Joshua and Alyssa.

GIFTS | FROM PAGE 1 she continued. “When I buy things I usually buy curriculum, so some of the stuff we have is as much as 30 years old.” “It is a challenge getting supplies,” said Janice Gaare, director of special programs for the Oak Harbor School District. “As we’ve seen a decrease in funding it has left almost no funding for supplies.” But the visit was about more than a party and presents. It was about community, too. “It really inspires teachers and students and shows how much the community supports them,” Gaare said. “It’s very important to do this,” said Glyn. “It lets the community know the Navy is there to help them in any
kind of need. We’re here and we can be an extra set of hands.” “It’s community involvement my population of students don’t usually get,” said Worrell. Students had a gift of their own to share with the Fighting Marlins. They presented VP-40 with a huge card that read “Thank you” and “Happy Holidays” on the front. When they opened it up, it was filled with personal letters of thanks from all the students. Then is was time to get down to business, as students had baked cookies for their visitors to decorate. Sailors and students shared tables and chatted with one another as they spread icing on the cookies and adorned them with sprinkles and different col-

ored icing. The social aspect of the gathering was a good exercise for students, one they had been preparing for all week. “It’s probably one of the best days for the students,
because they get a lot of attention and they get to socialize,” Lonnie said. “I’m sure they’re overwhelmed and overjoyed.” “We spent the whole week talking about this. It’s a big change in our schedule,” Worrell said. “My kids don’t get a lot of this kind of social interaction. It’s all good things they need to learn.” “You can see the excitement and the enthusiasm of the kids,” agreed Gaare. “It’s exciting for them.” Before Navy personnel left, Cmdr. Mietus had one last gift for the students one for each of them that they got to take home and open later. “Thank you for inviting us today,” Mietus told the students. “This is the absolute best thing any of us will do all day.”
NJROTC sweeps awards at district contest It was a day of firsts for Oak Harbor High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps drill and rifle teams. In the first drill meet of the season, held Dec. 10 at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma high school, the cadets of Wildcat Battalion dominated among the 10 schools in the district, with a majority of first-place finishes. Team awards for first place included color guard one and two; unarmed and armed drill teams; physical strength team one; air rifle team one. Physical strength team two placed second, and air rifle team two placed fourth. Individual awards included the following categories: unarmed drill team commander Joyce Abides, second; armed drill team commander Josh Koorn, second; air rifle overall shooter awards — Artan Cetin, fifth; Chel Moore, second; Josh McVey, first; physical strength Ironman/ Ironwoman awards — Josh McVey, first; Cody Hernkind, second; Jahleel Vester, fourth; Joyce Abides, fourth; Tricia Desquitado, third; armed drill down (Simon says/rifle drill movements) — Sean Crosby, fourth; and Darlene Salcedo, second. The Northwest drill and rifle conference has 34 schools in Western Washington and Oregon and consists of units representing Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps JROTC programs. Cmdr. Michael Black and Chief William Thiel lead Oak Harbor’s NJROTC unit.

NAVY VIEWS Happy Holidays! ’Twas just days before Christmas and while hard at work, several visions of unfinished chores stole my smirk. Most presents were wrapped — very prettily, too, but still I had writing and baking to do.

What is your favorite holiday treat and why?
The stockings were hung and the lights filled the air, but not one single goodie or treat was prepared. Christmas spirit was lacking and for this I was sad, ’til I spent a few hours with a great Navy band. With music so cheery and so full of life, it made me forget all the work and the strife. Working on stories like VP-40 at school made me think this whole season could really be cool. With people like those in the Ladies Auxiliary, it’s plain folks on Whidbey understand things quite clearly.

Lindell, the sun also rises
I
have a history of not waking up on time. The problem started when I was a teenager, and everyone thought it was just a phase. “She’ll grow out of it,” they said. “What teenager gets up early anyway?” By my 20s, however, it was clear that I am, by nature, not a morning person. I went through several alarm clocks trying to find the perfect one. Nothing worked. This greatly annoyed my thennew Naval-Academy-trained husband, who can wake up to the faintest of wrist-watch alarms at 4 a.m. if he has to. When I had my first child at age 24, everyone thought my sleepymorning days were over. No more
hitting snooze. No more asking people not to talk to me for 30 minutes and until I had eaten my morning cereal in total silence. A baby, they said, would not put up with these things. And, as fate would have it, my first baby is, and continues to be, a person who does his best thinking before the sun comes up. Unlike most children who do their homework after school, Ford saves his to do at 5 o’clock the next morning. My next two babies, Owen and Lindell, are not morning people. They are either blessed or cursed (take your pick) with the ability to pretend mornings don’t even

happen. In fact, until last week, Lindell wasn’t aware that the sun rises. (Here’s where I blame the new dog.) Sparky wakes up at 5 a.m. Ford lets Sparky out, and in due time, I hear the thump of paws climbing the stairs outside my bedroom. My new (successful) alarm clock: a wet dog nose and bad breath. Since we got Sparky in October, my routine has been to come downstairs, put out the dog food
bowl, and fall back asleep on the living room couch. Meanwhile, Ford does his homework and reads his books. Last week, however, for reasons I will never understand, Lindell woke up at 5 a.m., too. He wanted waffles. Then he wanted Cheerios. While Lindell slurped his milk, Ford introduced him to the world of morning. “You’ll see the sun rise out the window soon,” Ford said. Lindell dropped his spoon. “The sun rises?” he asked. “Yep, and you’ll start to hear birds, too,” Ford said. I worried that Ford was making this sound like too much fun. And sure enough, later that day, Lindell said, “Can we do that middle-of-the-night thing together again?” “What middle-of-the-night

thing?” “You know, where Ford and I watch the sun and you make us breakfast?” “That’s not a good routine, Lindell,” I said. “I kind of liked having company,” Ford said. “So can we do it, Mom?” The next morning, I woke up to Sparky’s breath and Lindell’s smiling face at the side of my bed. “Time to do that thing where we sit in the dark, Mom,” he said. “How about we sleep in the dark, Lindell?” Two minutes later, I was making waffles and waiting for the sun to rise. “I like our new routine,” Lindell said. I didn’t answer. I was still half asleep.

Christmas with all the trimmings — that’s what greeted guests last week at Oak Harbor Veterans of Foreign Wars post 7392, as the Ladies Auxiliary hosted a Christmas party and luncheon for senior citizens. “We’re quite pleased with the turnout, said Ladies Auxiliary president Joanne McDaniel. A decorated Christmas tree graced one corner of the VFW hall, and rows of tables in two different rooms accommodated diners, while Christmas music played softly in the background. Following the meal, a very slender Santa who, with help from Mrs. Claus and their loyal elf, “Sugar Plum, handed out presents to each guest. Santa just couldn’t seem to escape the grateful hugs and kisses that came his way whenever he presented guests with their gifts — not that he was really trying. “This is the best part of
this job — getting hugged by all these ladies, he said. A special treat this year was Santa’s Corner, a table filled with items remaining from the auxiliary’s November charity auction. “Folks from the community were so generous with their auction donations this year, said McDaniel. “Seniors sometimes find it hard to get out and do Christmas shopping. We had these quality, small items left over from the auction, and thought, ‘why not give them the opportunity to shop here for free?’ Santa’s Corner included an assortment of angel figurines, decorative plates, candle-holders, Christmas mugs and other items perfect for last-minute gift ideas. Just how long the ladies auxiliary has been hosting the senior Christmas party, is anyone’s guess, said member Achsah Haun. “I’ve been here for 30 years, and as far as I know, we haven’t missed a year, she said. However long it’s been going on, it is one way the
auxiliary thanks seniors for their military service through the years and the many other valuable contributions they make to the community all year long. Take 88-year-old Oak Harbor resident Coetta Engel. Although she requires a walker to get around, she has managed to supply the auxiliary with all the peanut brittle for its annual auction for the past three years. “Even though I don’t get around like I used to, baking is still there for me, said Engel. “It gives me

“It wouldn’t be Christmas without a concert, said Linda Barfuss, who attended with her parents, retired Cmdr. Paul and Sue Bixby. “I was raised with these concerts so we always go to the military concert. It’s a tradition. “You can’t miss such great music, agreed Paul Bixby. “This is just part of how we celebrate. “We try to come every year, said another concertgoer, NaDeane Jensen. “It’s a neat afternoon. Members of Navy Band Northwest often appear at functions in small groups. The holiday concert, however, features the entire band. It’s something members begin preparing for well in advance. “We start practicing in early November at the very latest, said Lt. j.g. Robert Coats, director of Navy Band Northwest. “We do our best to do a wellrounded show that everyone is able to enjoy. This year’s concert was no exception. Musicians Third Class Alena Dashiell, Sarah Reasner and Stephanie Brainard
(At left) The Grinch tries to steal the baton from Lt. j.g. Robert Coats as MU2 Derek Brainard sings the Grinch’s theme song during the Navy Band Northwest concert Saturday. (At right) MU3 Gregory Lopes sings “Oh Holy Night. (Below right) MU2 Jay Gillespie plays the saxophone on his arrangement of “The Christmas Song. KATHY REED/WHIDBEY CROSSWIND
performed an Andrews Sisters-style medley of holiday tunes, including “Winter Wonderland and “I’d Like to Hitch a Ride with Santa Claus. An excellent rendition of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch, by Musician Second Class Derek Brainard, gave audience members a good laugh when the Grinch himself appeared, at one point even trying to steal the baton from band director Coats. Several of the arrangements were done by members of Navy Band
Northwest as well, including a jazzy version of “The Christmas Song, more commonly known as “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, which was arranged and played by Musician Second Class Jay Gillespie. The popular music group Passage broke

out from the rest of the band and played a couple of selections as well. Other solo performances included “Oh Holy Night by Musician Third Class Gregory Lopes and Musician Third Class Alena Dashiell, who sang “Santa Baby. Even Santa Claus took time out from his busy schedule to make an appearance, passing out candy canes and greeting members of the audience. Creating a well-rounded program is part of the challenge of planning the holiday concert each year. “We have to make sure it’s appropriate for the season and honors all the various traditions, said Coats. “It’s always different and such a good selection of music, said Oak Harbor Mayor Jim Slowik. “And the community turns out for it. It was well received and ties the Navy to the community. While this was not the first time retired Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Technician First Class John White had heard Navy Band Northwest perform, this was his first holiday concert. “It shows off their musicianship and was a nice variety and great selection of music, he said. When asked whether the holiday concert would become an annual event for him, White said, “It certainly could be.
