t ee str g rin sp SITE MAP In downtown Los Angeles, a new vernacular of residential architecture has appeared. Due to major incentives from City Hall, and the push to revitalize the downtown area, Live/ Work apartments are filling many obsolete and abandoned commercial buildings. Alexandria Hotel was once one of the most luxury space for events in early 1900s. In its heyday from 1911 to 1922, it was used as the scene of speeches by U.S. Presidents William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson. It was also the place where Paul Whiteman, known as the “Jazz King”, got his start as bandleader in 1919 and where Hollywood held its most significant balls during the early days of mostion picture business. The narrative started with that an artist, a designer and a performer would get individual studio and living area and share a communal kitchen and dining room. Under this scheme, they would be able to control their privacy through a sliding semi-translucent panel. The design scheme began with introducing oblique lines in both plan and section. These lines would regulate residents’ daily routine and interactions between one and other. In plan, they indicated circulation paths to destinated programmes. In section, they served as elevation changes and futher developed into furniture sets which accommodated accordingly to human body’s function. In the scheme, there were slant surfaces becoming multi-function uses based on inclination of human body. For existing Ballroom and Palm Court, they were recognized as structure frame of Baroque enrichment. In any floor, each resident would possessed a piece or even more of this architectural beauty. Consequently, when the contemporary design scheme came across with Baroque architecture, it architecturalized an extrordinary spatial experience for the Live & Work apartments.
