ECO-SYM Ecology is relationships and interactions between organisms and their environment. Symbiosis is a harmonious and synergistic collaboration. Eco-Sym is the harmonious and synergistic collaboration between man and nature at Horseshoe Cove. The ebb and flow of both man and nature across the site is enabled by intentional intervention, meant to minimize the human footprint while maximizing the enjoyment that a human visitor can receive on this cultural landscape. The site becomes an exterior exhibition space which expands upon the programs and activities of the Bay Area Discovery Museum, while becoming an accessible public amenity. In order to act in a way that is BENEFICIAL to both humans and the natural habitat, a strategy of EBB and FLOW is deployed. EBB – Removal of the deteriorating seawall and previous site infill enables the natural water systems of the site that existed at the time of the Miwok Indians and before military interventions. An existing, freshwater stream is daylighted and the result will be a restored wetland with a natural affinity towards the healed edge of the shoreline. FLOW – As the bay water freely flows into the newly created wetland, so too do people flow across the site on the paths created for them. The earth that was removed to create the wetland does not go to waste, but is swept up onto a small framework to create a berm on the edge of the site – an adept balance of both natural and human structure and activity.
