Dance spectacular Poacher goes out in style
by Abigail McFarlane After an amazing
closing ceremony by James Traynor it’s
time to say a final goodbye to Poacher 2017. With singing, dancing and a fantastic performance from special guests Diversity. After a Little Mix tribute act, the crowd was ecstatic in their excitment for the main act.
“I’m just so excited, I’ve never seen them perform live before and can’t believe I have this opportunity at Poacher” said Duncan, 13, from Story Book Legends subcamp. Harris, 10, who is camping with Duncan said “I really hope they do lots of flips, they’re so cool!”. Starting with bright
lights, the dancers did not disappoint as they hip-hopped their way through a medley of songs. This was not all that the crowd enjoyed though as Diversity included the audience throughout their performance. Scouts and Guides were tasked with getting four of their team’s oversized
balloons to the front of the stage from the back of the crowd. Due to one of the green team’s balloons popping, the red team won. However, during the dance off, the green team proved succesful after their Diversity representatives performed more back flips than their
competitors. The Audience confirmed Diversity had closed the show with style with a big scream after the dancers had taken their bows. “You have been the best audience ever!” said Ashley Banjo, choreograoher for the group. “That was an awesome
experience” said Darcey,11, from 8th Boston Wyberton. “A fantastic, spectacular performance, I loved it!” said Cai,10, from 8th Boston Wyberton. To follow the incredible dance group, a DJ kept the crowd smiling. The air was electric and it meant Poacher ended on a high.

A perfect ending to Poacher by Jake Dixon Last night’s closing ceremony was a fantastic ending to a fantastic week here at Poacher 2017. After parading in with their subcamps, participants were treated to a thrilling ceremony with singing, dancing and special guests Diversity. The atmosphere was incredible as campers of all ages remembered what an amazing week they have had. Many campers had tears in their eyes as they watched the video montage, put together of the week. Poacher’s Got
Talent winner Freddie gave an awesome performance on the Main Stage with the crowd going wild throughout the performance. Before Father Gavin closed Poacher 2017, flags from the 22 countries were lowered and then paraded out of the showground. Flags from the previous ten Poachers were also flown to celebrate Poacher’s 40th birthday. Father Gavin gave an inspiring speech, looking back at the highs and lows of the week, with highlights including the tomahawk throwing.
Constellations, mini Land Rovers and basketball by James Traynor Our reporters have been out all week covering nearly all of the over 80 activities on offer, watching, interviewing and furiously scribbling all the way. Now we are at the end of the week, we’ve been totting up the ones we have missed and giving them an extra special mention. Mini land rovers mysteriously escaped our reporting until now. Maria from 7th Lincoln on Movie Legends thought it was really cool. “The more I practiced the better I got and the less I dropped the ball. The hardest bit is going down the ramp,” she said. The roller disco was another initially overlooked activity by us reporters and what a
shame. There is lots of fun to be had, with good music and good company. Chelsea 43rd Northampton, Storybook Legends said, “it is a great way to destress and have fun with friends.” She’s been 5 times this week and “enjoys the good music as she can dance along to it.” The wheelchair basketball passed us by due to being conspicuously hidden next to Staff Catering. Despite that, it has been a hit. Iris is from 8th Crosby on Comic Book Legends has been twice this week. “You can go fast and score, but if things go wrong the blame is shared across the team. I’ve definitely improved since yesterday.” The planetarium is also downstairs from
our office and all the participants are contained within the inflatable which makes interviewing difficult. I did manage to catch Ruby and Poppy as they left, who loved it. “It was cool seeing the constellations. We learnt so many cool facts,” they said. Did you know for example that it takes five years to get to Jupiter? It is quite tricky to talk to people while they’re drumming, meaning more planning was required. Speaking at the end of their session, Allison, Ellie and Eleanor from 1st Saxilby Guides enjoyed the different rhythms which they said were easy to learn. “They were full of energy,” they said.

Reaching Italy on the radio
by Jake Dixon
Participants have been tuning in to Radio Caroline this week. They have been collecting call signs from other radio communicators. If the Scouts and Guides collect 25 call signs they receive a communication badge. Erin, 11, from 27th Lincoln Scouts, Movie Legends, has been going back to the base throughout the week. “I’m working
hard because I want the badge. It’s been really fun talking to people from around the world.” The furthest Erin had reached was Italy. Sam, 14, from 1st Wivenhoe Scouts, Movie Legends, was also tuning into the different frequencies. “I think it’s a really cool skill to have. I like the different ways of communicating with the world,” he said. Scouts and Guides have been whizzing around on ice skates this week.
With confident skaters and those who are a bit wobbly it’s been a great opportunity. They have also been whizzing down a water slide. The slide is an inflatable meaning participants can slip with great speed and have lots of fun. The bumper car football has also been great fun with tense matches. Petrol heads and football hooligans united for fun as they tried to steer towards a goal.
Rock Legends raise £200 for lifesaving charity A subcamp has raised hundreds of pounds at Poacher for first aid charity Lincolnshire LIVES. The Rock Legends subcamp has been asking people for £1 every time they charge their mobile phone at the subcamp headquarters. By doing this they have raised around £200. The money was presented to Lincolnshire LIVES at the subcamp headquarters yesterday afternoon. Lincolnshire LIVES has been providing first aid at Poacher all week and has been based at the first aid post.

Fun to be had in the arena
by Hamish Arnold For those who were looking for a more relaxing game with a competitive edge, Frisbee golf and croquet were for them. Riley and Daniel, both 13, from 11th Grimsby
Scouts on Movie Legends subcamp were enjoying the Frisbee golf. “The wind can make it more difficult, but sometimes it can help you too,” they said. “It’s quite difficult to
start off with, but once you get the hang of it, it’s good fun.” The game requires the player to throw a Frisbee towards a large basket with a flag in it, much like a golf hole, and the winner is the one to get the
Frisbee into the basket in the fewest number of throws. Croquet has been around for over 150 years, and it is alive and well at Poacher this year. Teigan, 11, Chloe and Kaitlyn, both
How to feel ten feet tall by Jake Dixon Over the week you may have seen some people walking around who are head and shoulders above the rest. This would be because they’ve had a chance walk on stilts ranging from a couple of feet tall to six feet tall. If you managed to master
the six-foot stilts you may well be one of the ten people lucky enough to earn one of the stilt walking team’s fluorescent neckers! Thomas from 15th North Hykeham said putting on the stilts makes you feel like you’ve gone from being 11 to 21 in two seconds.
He said: “Once you’ve got going you don’t want to stop!” Lexi and Abbey from 2nd Seaton Delaval thought it was pretty cool and they liked looking down on the people who were normally taller than them. They said it was a weird feeling.
12, Fern, 13 and Megan, 15, from 2nd Ilkeston Guides on Movie Legends subcamp were enjoying playing croquet. “You have to hit the ball through all the hoops and then hit the pole in the middle
to win,” they said. “It’s good to play with friends, because you can have a good laugh.” They joked that the surface didn’t lend itself to croquet playing, but they still had a great time anyway.
Sharp shooters of the week Well done to everyone who has had a go in the shooting range this week. The Shot of the Day for each day was: Sunday: Cas Potterton, 78, Lincoln District Scouts

Poacher unites for 40th
by Arrow news team
Across Poacher children and adults were celebrating its 40th birthday with a huge banquet. Storybook had two rows of tables running from one end of the camp to the other, with everyone in the party atmosphere. David played happy
birthday on the trumpet outside the subcamp HQ as everyone tucked into their party food. There were some awesome cakes in the subcamp with one fairy-tale castle being baked and decorated here on site by Welton Guides. The participants were really in the party
mood with Mexican Waves and even a pass the parcel. A large crowd gathered outside Historical Legends HQ to welcome the Poacher FM team. They were all singing along to the radio and making lots of noise to get into the spirit. 87th Nottingham, St
Albans and Boston were some of the groups celebrating Poacher’s birthday. All spare space around the Movie Legends subcamp HQ was occupied with table after table as the entire subcamp celebrated 40 years of Poacher. One group
released a bunch of balloons into the sky, while others chanted and cheered and sang live on air on Poacher FM. British Scouts Overseas on Comic Book Legends were having their own party with lots of food. The rest of Comic Book Legends gathered
outside their HQ, all dressed up enjoying the celebrations. They all chanted ‘there aint no party like a Poacher party!’ before leading ‘Happy Birthday’ with the whole camp joining in singing.
Movie Legends subcamp were getting into the spirit of celebration at Thursday’s street party. Tables and benches were neatly lined up across the football pitch next to the subcamp HQ, for the masses to eat a picnic and enjoy the party. Orla and Millie from 2nd Raunds were enjoying their pasta salad. They said they were nervous as they were due to perform at the final of Poacher’s Got Talent. 11th Grimsby Scouts enjoyed being together
with their whole subcamp. Edward, 10, Sam, Josh and Daniel, all 12, from Winterton Scouts loved the atmosphere at the street party. Each group brought meals they had prepared on their sites and enjoyed each other’s company. 15th Brighton were looking forward to their dinner. Most of the participants were at their first Poacher. They said: “It’s like going to your first football match and it’s the World Cup final.”
Russell Kirk, of Comic Book subcamp staff, led a chorus of Scouts and Guides in song. Donned in his snazzy Comic Book suit and with an amp playing Poacher FM he led his campers in renditions of party songs such as the Hokey Cokey, Music Man and Happy Birthday. Among those enjoying the celebrations in front of the Comic Book HQ were 1st Maidstone Girl Guides from Canada. Cady said: “It’s amazing to see so many people here.” Eleven-year-old Maya, of 1st Bradley Guides,
was at her first Poacher event. Thirteen-year-old Ellie said it was cool to be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Poacher. “It’s a great opportunity to come here and meet so many different people,” she said. “You get to try new things you didn’t think you would get to try.” William, 12, of 20th Lincoln Scout Group, said the camp was amazing. “I only recently heard about Poacher and now I’ve heard it’s 40 years old.”
Walking onto Storybook on Thursday anyone might have thought all the campers had disappeared. The wind carried the sound of their voices but there was no-one in sight. However, if you ventured further into the subcamp all its residents could be found having a giant party in the side streets. The green roads throughout the campsite were lined with tables and chairs combined with a riot of colour and noise. Walking down the walkways there was a
huge variety of food on the tables - everything from fajitas to baked potatoes, chilli to take away pizza. Seren Cranston, 10, from 1st Washingborough Guides explained what the party was all about following a particularly rowdy rendition of “Thunderation”. “It’s Poacher’s 40th and we’ve brought our tables out and eating outside. We’re all celebrating in different ways. One group let go of loads of balloons and we’re all singing different songs.”

Superman and cliff hanger
by Jake Dixon
Three motorcyclists took to the skies yesterday lunchtime entertaining the crowd with some amazing twists and tricks. Commentator Bert got the crowd excited for the start of the show and talked through the different stunts the East Coast Freestyle Motorcross Display Team were performing. After each jump the crowd gave an almighty cheer as they stared
in awe at tricks they could only dream of performing. Tillie and Tilly from 2nd Lincoln thought the riders were absolutely crazy. “The only way we can describe it is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” The riders, Ryan Pasch, Nez Parker and Wayne Jacobs, performed a whole range stunts in the air including ‘superman’, ‘cliff hanger’ ‘kiss of death’ and ‘seat grab indy.’ Many of
these tricks involved dismounting from their bikes in mid-air, holding on with only their hands, and then getting into different positions. The motorcyclists even had a competition to see who could perform the best trick where each rider did three jumps and the rider with the loudest cheer from the crowd won. In the end it came down to a jump-off between Nez and Wayne with Wayne narrowly claiming the
title of best trick. The trio have been riding for around ten years and spend and lot of time practicing and perfecting each trick they perform. Alice from 1st Coddington Rangers thought it was breath-taking. “It gave me goose bumps,” she said. The riders said that being in the air is so good. They said: “It’s one of the best adrenaline rushes you can get.”

Friends to last a lifetime by Holly Sloan
Poacher 2017 has come to an end, so it’s time to look back and reflect upon the adventure of a lifetime our participants have experienced during the week. With 5500 Scouts, Guides, Leaders and staff there has been a variety of activities to take part in, from crafts to ice-skating, inflatables, the zipline and kayaking. We’ve had barn dances, cinema nights, discos and ice-cream, and we were even treated to a fantastic display by the Red Arrows. We’ve been out and about talking to Scouts and Guides to find out what their favourite moments of the week have been. Chatting Scouts from 44th Colchester, Movie Legends subcamp, Joe, 13 said: “My favourite
activity was the Kayaking because I fell in the water multiple times, got my shoes wet, went around and around in circles and had loads of fun”. One of the most prominent themes of Poacher2017 has been about making friends, and Ollie, 11 has done just that. He said, “Meeting new friends from different countries. I’ve met some people from Australia, Kenya, and lots of other places”. Elizabeth, 10 and Emily, 11 from Sleaford Division Guides, Storybook Legends subcamp talked about some of their happiest memories of Poacher 2017. Emily said, “My funniest moment was when I was on the water zorbs and I fell over!”, while Elizabeth added “My favourite moment was the Segways, because I felt like I was

The chocolate is also way better here!” To sum up, we asked Poacher 2017 participants to describe Poacher in a few words. Scouts from 14th Walton on the Hill Scouts, Movie Legends subcamp said it was “It was cool, amazing, unbelievable”, while Sleaford Division
