Eyes by POC 2012

Eyes by POC With the experience gained in optics, POC decided to take the next step, with the conviction that we would be able to make a difference in this field as well. Our sunglasses use NXT lenses, which were initially developed for fighter jet canopies. These lenses offer extreme impact, temperature and chemical resistanace, together with superior optical performance compared to the existing technologies, such as polycarbonate.

This is us POC is a Swedish company that is based on a strong mission: to do everything

we possibly can to save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents, for gravity sports athletes, by developing and renewing what personal protection is all about. When it comes to increasing the degree of protection, POC has already set a new standard with patent technical solutions in construction, material combinations and engineering.

experts in the areas of safety, medicine, health care, advanced product development, and testing. All of our products have been tested by top gravity sports athletes and are then further refined to perfection. These athletes love to go flat out, how ever, without risking cuts, bruises, headaches or more serious injuries such as back and brain damage. The end result is a line of lightweight, high performance gear that offers the ultimate protection against injury, thanks to its superior impact absorption and penetration resistance.

POC works in a cross-scientific way from its office in SaltsjĂśbaden, just outside

of Stockholm, Sweden. The organization has competence in different fields, including engineers, material specialists, industrial, and graphic designers, as well as neurologists and specialists in spinal cord injuries. Stockholm is an important center for some of Europe’s leading research and development

When POC develops a product, we do it all in the spirit of doing our very best.

When it comes to safety, quality and performance, we never compromise when choosing a construction or material, even if this would mean cheaper products or increased margins.

Lens Technology In the 1990’s the US Army required a lightweight transparent material that would provide ballistic protection without compromising optical performance. This new material would have to provide reliability, protection, weather resistance, along with ballistic and optical requirements. The material was further developed into NXT ® lenses. Ballistic resistance

Lens coatings

Since NXT were developed as ”visual armor”, the ballistic resistance is excellent. These lenses are so unlikely to break from violence that we even deliver them with an ”unbreakable” warranty.

The superior lens technology offered in POC’s NXT lenses thanks to the base material is helped out by additional coatings, to make sure the clear view is not disturbed by scratches, grease, light reflections or water.

The NXT lenses pass the ANSI Z87.1 High-Velocity Impact Test, which is considered to be one of the most stringent impact and projectile penetration standard for optical lenses. In this test, 1/4 inch (0,64 cm) steel projectiles are shot at the lens at a velocity of 150 ft/second (164,6 km/h).

Stress cracking The strength of the NXT lenses make them non-sensitive to stress-cracking, giving us more possibilities for the design and a better product for the end user.

Chemical resistance Unlike polycarbonate, NXT lenses provide excellent resistance to solvents and chemicals.

Anti reflective coating – This coating reduces the appearance of reflections

and glare in the lens surface. The coating’s several layers are chosen to produce alternating interference so that reflected light beams are eliminated while transmitted light beams are unchanged. Hydrophobic coating – Thanks to this coating, water and perspiration will immediately form droplets that slides off the surface. The lens stay clean and free of distortion that would otherwise be caused by the water. Anti scratch – This coating prevents scratches that otherwise can damage the

surface of the lens. Oleophobic coating – By adding this coating, the lens will withstand fingerprints and dirt caused by grease. The result is a more clear view as well as making the lenses easier to clean. The lenses also stay clean much longer than ordinary lenses.

POC Specific Lens Technology Refractive index

n1 sin 01 = n2 sin 02

The refractive index of a medium tells how much the speed of light is reduced inside the medium. When light passes P n n index from one medium to another, the angle/ v v velocity direction of the light will change, 0 depending on the difference of refractive normal index between the two mediums. In the O 0 case of sunglass lenses, the smallest Q possible change is desired to provide the best optics (less distortion of the light). NXT lenses have a refractive index of 1,53, which is the same as for glass, to be compared with 1,59 for polycarbonate. 1

Specific gravity This measurement describes the material’s weight per volume unit in relation to water. A lower specific gravity basically means a lighter sample at a given volume. NXT lenses have a specific gravity of 1,11, while polycarbonate has 1,22 and glass, known to be heavy, has 2,53.

Abbe number The refractive index depends on the wavelength of the light, meaning a light ray consisting of many colors (different wavelengths) will be refracted at different angles, depending on what color is observed. The phenomena is called chromatic dispersion and, generally, the index of refraction is greater for shorter wavelengths. For the visible wavelengths, this means that for example blue light (shorter wavelength) bends more than red light (longer wavelength). The chromatic dispersion differs between transparent materials and the Abbe number is the measurement of a material’s variation of refractive index with wavelengths. The Abbe number is defined as:

n 1 V= n D –n F – c

where nD, nF and nC are the refractive indices of the material at the wavelengths nD = 589.2 (yellow) nm, nC = 486.1 nm (green/blue) and nC = 656.3 nm (red). A higher value of V (Abbe number) means a lower dispersion of the different visible color when light passes the material.

Photochromic Different light conditions call for different tint of a sunglass lens. By applying a customized photochromic system, we can offer a lens that quickly automatically adapts to the light conditions of the day. The photochromic dye is embedded in the lens, meaning it will never be affected by wear and tear of the lens.

Polarization The technology of polarizing lenses is common in sunglasses technology as a way of reducing glare. Polarizing lenses work by filtering randomly polarized electromagnetic waves and leaving only a portion which is polarized parallel to the orientation of the filter. If light is first partly polarized by reflection in a surface, for example water, the glare from this reflection can be absorbed by the polarization filter in the lens, meaning to reduce glare for the user. Although polarization is basic technology, NXT polarized lenses have the polarizing element infused directly in the lens through a proprietary process. Thanks to this, the lens become thinner, more durable and get better optics than traditional film-based polarization filters.

HCD – High Chromatic Definition These high chromatic definition lenses intensify the natural color contrast by boosting the wavelengths that the eyes’ receptors actually react on. HCD also harmonizes the color fluctuation caused by the interplay between light and shadow. The result is prevented eye fatigue and improved reaction time. Normal chromatic respons of the eye
