Seniors Week MONDAY 13 – SUNDAY 19 OCTOBER 2014

Discover Imagine Together EVENTS IN THE SOUTH Seniors Week 2014 1

Seniors Card holders can reap benefits during Seniors Week and throughout the year, with more than 770 businesses offering a diverse range of discounts on products and services. Tasmanian residents who are 60 years and over, and retired or not working more than 20 hours a week in paid employment are eligible for the Tasmanian Government Seniors Card. If you are eligible for a Seniors Card but don’t currently have one, call into any Service Tasmania shop with three pieces of identification – one with your date of birth and one showing proof of your Tasmanian address – and complete an application form. A Service Tasmania officer will witness your form, and once approved, give you a receipt that acts as a temporary Seniors Card. This enables you to start accessing discounts immediately, including during Seniors Week! Service Tasmania can also help with change of addresses and applying for a replacement card. New businesses are always joining the Seniors Card Program so it’s worth regularly checking online for updates at www.seniors.tas.gov.au or by following us on Facebook.

The 2015-2016 Seniors Card Directory will be released in December 2014 and will be available from Service Tasmania, LINCs and local government offices. You can also have a directory sent to you by phoning 1300 13 55 13. By keeping a copy of the Directory handy, you’ll be able to take advantage of great deals whilst on shopping trips.

Not too familiar with the internet? Then Seniors Week is a great time to visit a LINC or Online Access Centre for lessons about searching online. More than 94,000 Tasmanians are enjoying the rewards of being a Seniors Card holder – join them now!

Message from the Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier Welcome to Seniors Week 2014. Seniors Week is an ideal time to explore activities in your local community and find out what is available throughout the year. It is a time for being creative and finding new hobbies; increasing your knowledge and sharing your skills; as well as connecting with friends and making new ones. It is a time for having fun! Seniors Week is an important annual event for promoting healthy ageing because our physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing are vitally important. This year, the dates for Seniors Week have changed, but the theme remains the same, capturing the essence of what Seniors Week is all about: Discover. Imagine. Together. In 2014, Seniors Week also has emphasis on activities that connect generations—young and old, being and doing things together. Nurturing these important connections helps strengthen our communities.

The Liberal Government recognises the vital contribution that seniors make to the social and economic wellbeing of the Tasmanian community. During the last election, we committed to invest an additional $450 000 in protecting and supporting older Tasmanians through addressing elder abuse. The Premier recently announced our $555 000 investment into Tasmanian Men’s Sheds, addressing social isolation issues among older Tasmanians. I would like to thank the many organisations, groups and clubs who devote their time and energy to host Seniors Week events. Without your commitment to our local communities, Seniors Week would not be possible. I warmly encourage older Tasmanians and the wider community to get involved in Seniors Week. Enjoy discovering and imagining together with your friends and family while participating in the diverse range of events on offer. You can keep up-to-date with what is happening during Seniors Week, including any changes to the program, by visiting the COTA Tasmania website at www.cotatas.org.au Have a wonderful Seniors Week. CEO’s message This is the fourth year that COTA Tasmania has facilitated this wonderful and much anticipated program of events and I’m pleased to say that we are again able to present a wide variety of events across the state. This year Seniors Week has a new date for the first time in its 17-year history. Research we conducted after last year’s program showed that the clash with the revised school holiday dates was not popular with many patrons or organizers so we made the bold move to break with the traditional 1 October commencement date and move to mid-October, again influenced by stakeholder consultations. The first of October is traditionally the International Day of Older Persons and COTA Tas is still paying homage to this occasion by scheduling our official Seniors Week launch on this day with a special family-friendly event in Hobart to be held in conjunction with the official proceedings. This innovative, totally new event has an intergenerational theme and thus has the title It’s On for Young and Old – a Day on the Green. Grandparents, children and grandchildren from the community are invited to attend to participate in a wide array of fun activities suitable for young and old, as the name suggests. More details about this special family event are published elsewhere in this program, which has retained the reader-friendly format successfully introduced last year and again includes the popular Daily Planner, which allows you to more easily identify the events that appeal and make your Seniors Week activity planning a breeze!

Our wonderful sponsors include major sponsor the Tasmanian Government, which had the vision to start this wonderful activities program for seniors, 17 years ago and continues to support COTA Tasmania in presenting the Seniors Week program today. Other sponsors include The Senior Tasmania newspaper, Metro Tasmania, Merseylink and Phoenix Coaches. You are encouraged to support these much-appreciated sponsors and Program advertisers whose support is invaluable. I want to acknowledge our small but dedicated team at COTA for their commitment to making Seniors Week as varied, accessible and enjoyable as possible. I also thank the many organisers for their contributions to make Seniors Week exciting, varied and a great success. Discover. Imagine. Together – perfectly represents the spirit of Seniors Week events whether they be creative, information-based or a physical activity. It has added relevance this year given our desire to see more inter-generational participation in Seniors Week and beyond. Whatever you do in Seniors Week this year, we hope you do indeed, discover, imagine and enjoy, together. Sue Leitch CEO COTA Tasmania

Feedback/Your Stories In order to ensure the continuing success of Seniors Week and maintain its place on the Tasmanian event calendar we encourage you to provide your feedback. How has Seniors Week enriched your life? Why do you support Seniors Week? What ongoing friendships/networks have you gained as a result of Seniors Week?

4 Seniors Week 2014

When attending Seniors Week events, please take the opportunity to seek and complete an official survey form. It will only take a take a couple of minutes to answer the questions but your feedback will be invaluable to COTA TAS in its efforts to plan even better Seniors Week programs into the future. It’s on for Young and Old

A Day on the Green

B

Sponsored by The Senior newspaper

Last year COTA Tasmania broke with tradition and for the first time in the 16-year history of Seniors Week, conducted a special public and media event to officially launch the revised, new-look official events/ activities guide. This took place in Hobart’s Elizabeth Street mall and featured a seniors flashmob, which almost upstaged the Minister’s speech. That public interaction and involvement with COTA was very successful and inspired COTA to conduct something similar to launch the 2014 program. For some time COTA Tas has wanted to promote more interaction between older members of the community and their younger relatives and friends. It seemed to us that Seniors Week would be a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and start a conversation about various generations sharing experiences, knowledge and life! Older people are the custodians of culture, values and have been long recognised as the social ‘glue’ in our communities. So we set out to harness this enthusiasm and decided to make this the theme of our media/public launch of this year’s Seniors Week. We decided to make it a fun activities day for all ages and it suddenly made sense to bring forward the formal launch event traditionally held on day one of Seniors Week, and amalgamate them all into one big happy event. So we have! With the fantastic support of longtime Seniors Week sponsor, The Senior newspaper, together with the encouragement of the Grandparents raising Grandchildren Support Group, COTA Tas has arranged an inter-generational fun day in the outdoors with lots of varied, interesting and stimulating activities to entertain guests of all ages and abilities.

The result is an event called It’s on for Young and Old – A Day on the Green sponsored by The Senior. It’s to be held on Wednesday 1 October at the C3 Convention Centre in South Hobart – a perfect venue thanks to its good parking, level ground and access and modern facilities. Not to mention its spacious and comfortable indoor arena should the notoriously fickle October weather force us off the green grass and onto carpet! A Day on the Green commences at 11am and finishes around 2pm. Members of the public are invited to attend, especially generations of families because we’ve planned a range of interesting and fun activities to suit all ages. We’re encouraging the older guests to try the traditionally youthful activities and the youngsters to try some activities and sports that were popular “back in the day”. These will include activities such as quoits and egg and spoon races – just a few of the many interesting all-ages events that will be facilitated on the day by Life Be In It. There will also be half hourly entertainment, a jumping castle, knitting activities, balloon magic, and information booths. We encourage patrons to bring a picnic, or you can enjoy a free sausage or two from the Moonah Rotary barbeque (although a donation would be welcome!). Drinks and café food will be available from the C3 café. And let’s not forget the official ceremonies. At 11:30am we’ll hear brief addresses from COTA CEO Sue Leitch and Parliamentary Secretary Guy Barnett, who will officially launch Seniors Week to be held two weeks hence. Then it’s back to the fun and games and picnic and barbeque. Admission is free with gold coin donations encouraged for some catering and activities. Updated information about this event including transport options and how to find C3 will be available on the COTA Tasmania website. See you there! And if you can’t make we’ll hopefully see you out and about at a Seniors Week activity somewhere between 13 and 19 October.

Discover. Imagine. Together.

Seniors Week 2014 5

Go green, go free with Metro this Seniors Week Did you know that seniors and students make up the largest portion of Metro’s passengers? It seems fitting then that this year’s theme for Seniors Week is intergeneration. Under one name or another, Metro has been transporting Tasmanians for more than 120 years. Perhaps you have memories of catching a bus to school or down to the beach with friends.

So this Seniors Week, go green, go free with Metro.

As a major sponsor of Seniors Week, Metro wants to encourage seniors to get back on the bus. From Monday 13 October to Sunday 19 October 2014, Seniors Card holders with a Greencard can travel free on any Metro bus. Just present your Greencard and Seniors Card and you won’t be charged a fare.

Metro Launceston 168 Wellington Street Launceston

To get your free Greencard go to www.metrotas. com.au or visit: Metro Shop Hobart Ground floor 22 Elizabeth Street Hobart

Metro Burnie 28 Strahan Street Burnie

Don’t worry if you don’t already have a Greencard. Metro will waive the usual $5 fee for seniors who lodge an application between Monday 1 September and Monday 13 October 2014. Event listings

Transport for seniors

This program contains a comprehensive listing of Seniors Week events throughout Tasmania. Every effort has been made to ensure correct listings, but it is recommended that details be confirmed prior to attending events.

On the north west coast, the operators of Phoenix Coaches and Merseylink are once again most generously providing free bus services to Seniors Card holders during Seniors Week.

Other events In some parts of the State, activities have been planned in addition to those in this official program. Please check with your local council, community groups and local newspapers for information about any other events that may be held in your community. Special access People with disabilities or requiring special access should contact the event organiser prior to attendance.

Public liability Event organisers should have appropriate insurance cover while participating in Seniors Week including, but not limited to, public liability insurance. While COTA TAS is responsible for coordinating and promoting Seniors Week, individual event organisers are responsible for all insurances for their own specific activity. About COTA Tasmania… Our organisation is best known these days simply as COTA Tas but we are incorporated as the Council on the Ageing (Tasmania). COTA’s vision is: An inclusive society which values, supports and respects older people. COTA’s mission is: Promoting, improving and protecting the rights and interests of older Tasmanians with a focus on the vulnerable and disadvantaged. We’re an independent not-for-profit incorporated body with a volunteer board of directors who meet regularly. The Board has several sub-committees providing specialist advice. We also have a Policy Council looking at social policy that affects older people. COTA Tas has a small staff; a full-time Chief Executive and several part-time project officers who have responsibility for delivering a range of activities and benefits to seniors.

component – a highly acclaimed 200 page demographic profile of older Tasmanians, which has been widely used by many organisations and individuals.

COTA TASMANIA

We’ve recently completed a Volunteering project to highlight the important role older volunteers’ play in our community life and we’re in the final throes of analysing and reporting on an extensive research project about the information needs of older Tasmanians. And of course this year we’ve organised the new and innovative A Day on the Green on 1 October.

One of our major projects is of course Seniors Week, the very popular annual activities program devised by the state government 17 years ago and which has been organised by COTA Tas for the past four years. While Seniors Week is our highest profile project, COTA Tas is very engaged in several other areas of seniors’ welfare. We are active seniors advocates, participating in committees and forums, liaising with sector peak bodies and lobbying local, state and federal governments in regard to policies and issues affecting seniors such as energy costs, affordable housing, accessible transport, information access, cyber security, elder abuse, information needs and more. To assist us in keeping abreast of community sentiment and issues, COTA facilitates a successful program called Conversations with Our Community. This program involves volunteer seniors from several communities in the state’s south being the eyes and ears of their local communities. They meet regularly with our project officer to advise of concerns and issues that assist us to develop policies or to escalate the concerns to appropriate authorities. COTA Tas is currently working to expand this program statewide. Another highly regarded COTA Tas activity is our Peer Education program. These are a series of education and information sessions delivered, as their name suggests, by the peers of older people. These personable presenters are trained by experts in the respective subjects and then present the sessions in a variety of convenient and accessible locations. Recent peer education subjects have included fire safety in the home, internet safety, Beyond maturity blues, and the quality use of medicines. Last year the very popular You’re Worth It pilot peer education program about financial elder abuse won COTA Tas a major innovation award. Thanks to a special long-term state government grant we’ve been able to undertake a special multi-faceted project as part of the Tasmanian government’s Inclusive Ageing Strategy. Late last year COTA Tas delivered the first major

Grandparents and Relatives Raising Children Group Grandparents and Relatives Raising Children is a service developed for grandparents, relatives and kinship carers providing timely and useful information on services, networks, tips, stories and support available to carers. There is no doubt that the role of becoming a parent the second time around is very different to the first. Research has shown, and it is often talked of, the major upheaval to carers lives; the isolation, the energy drain and the financial and legal difficulties they face. There is often little preparation for the new role carers have taken on with a host of unforeseen problems they encounter. At the same time grandparents, relatives and kinship carers talk of the love they feel for the children in their care and the satisfaction that comes from being able to protect and nurture them. Carers have shared stories of challenge and perseverance. They speak of the joy they feel in watching the children they care for thrive and in the giving and receiving of love. This new life can be daunting without good supports and clear information.

Who is running Grandparents and Relatives Raising Children Group? Mission Australia and Baptcare are running a joint group. Working together with the Grandparents Advisory Counsel to develop a program that is tailored to the needs of those who are caring for children who are no longer placed with their parents. Our aim for this group is to work with families around their needs and to help them access the services best suited to them and their current situation. The delivery of the group will be both information and support based and we would like it to be co-lead by Mission Australia, Baptcare and those who attend the monthly gathering. We want this group to be best suited to your needs and aim to support you, not what we think you might want to hear and know.
