Seniors Week 2016 1
SENIORS CARD Seniors Card holders can reap benefits during Seniors Week and throughout the year, with more than 770 businesses offering a diverse range of discounts on products and services. Tasmanian residents who are 60 years and over, and retired or not working more than 20 hours a week in paid employment are eligible for the Tasmanian Government Seniors Card. If you are eligible for a Seniors Card but don’t currently have one, call into any Service Tasmania shop with three pieces of identification – one with your date of birth and one showing proof of your Tasmanian address – and complete an application form. A Service Tasmania officer will witness your form, and once approved, give you a receipt that acts as a temporary Seniors Card. This enables you to start accessing discounts immediately, including during Seniors Week! Service Tasmania can also help with change of addresses and applying for a replacement card. The 2017–2018 Seniors Card Directory will be released in December 2016 and will be available from Service Tasmania, LINCs and local government offices. You can also have a Directory sent to you by phoning 1300 13 55 13. By keeping a copy of the Directory handy, you’ll be able to take advantage of great deals whilst on shopping trips. New businesses are always joining the Seniors Card Program so it’s worth regularly checking online for updates at www.seniors.tas.gov.au or by following us on Facebook.
Not too familiar with the internet? Then Seniors Week is a great time to visit a LINC or Online Access Centre for lessons about searching online. More than 100,000 Tasmanians are enjoying the rewards of being a Seniors Card holder – join them now!
MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER Every year Seniors Week delivers a great range of events that promote active ageing and highlight the many ways in which older people in Tasmania can get involved in their local community and try something new. This year’s Seniors Week theme, Cultural Diversity, celebrates our dynamic and culturally diverse State and supports greater inclusion for all Tasmanians. The Tasmanian Liberal Government values older Tasmanians and recognises their contribution to our social and economic wellbeing. The Government is again pleased to partner with COTA Tasmania to deliver Seniors Week.

Seniors Week 2016 3
CEO’S MESSAGE Welcome to Seniors Week! This is the sixth year that COTA Tasmania has facilitated this wonderful and much anticipated program of events and I’m pleased to say that we are again able to present a wide variety of events across the state. Seniors Week is now well established in its mid-October timeslot as evidenced by its popularity with both participants and organisers. This year’s over-arching Seniors Week theme is cultural diversity and we will be acknowledging this at our official launch event, which returns to Launceston after several years. COTA is collaborating with the Migrant Resource Centre – Northern Tasmania to present a launch function showcasing the cultures and talents of some migrant communities in the north. We are very much looking forward to that. More details about this special launch event at the Tailrace Centre
(and how you can be part of it) are published elsewhere in the program, which has retained the reader-friendly format successfully introduced two years ago and again includes the popular Daily Planner, which allows you to more easily identify the events that appeal and make your Seniors Week activity planning a breeze! We’ve again had to expand the size of the program to cater for another record number of events around the state. This year there are nearly 600 events on offer featuring a number of events in new locations, including the upper East Coast and hinterland. Our wonderful Seniors Week supporters include the Tasmanian Government, which had the vision to start this activities program for seniors 19 years ago and continues to support COTA Tasmania in presenting the annual Seniors Week program. We also welcome the support this year of the Public Trustee. We also welcome back Tas Networks, The Senior Tasmania newspaper, Metro Tasmania, MerseyLink Coaches and the LINC network.
You are encouraged to support these much-appreciated sponsors and program advertisers whose assistance is invaluable. I want to acknowledge our small but dedicated team at COTA for their commitment to making Seniors Week as varied, accessible and enjoyable as possible. I also thank the organisers for their contributions towards making Seniors Week another exciting, varied and successful week of activities for seniors. Again we are using the tagline: Discover. Imagine. Together because we continue to believe that this phrase perfectly represents the spirit of Seniors Week events, whether they be creative, information-based or a physical activity. Whatever you do in Seniors Week this year, we hope you do indeed, discover, imagine and enjoy, together. Cheers, Sue Leitch Chief Executive Officer, COTA Tasmania

MUSIC AND FILM FEATURE AT SENIORS WEEK LAUNCH 10.30am Monday 3 October, Tailrace Centre, Waterfront Drive, Riverside – ALL WELCOME! Guests at the official Seniors Week launch in Launceston on Monday 3 October will be in for a real treat with several special performances planned to entertain patrons as part of our cultural diversity theme for this year’s Seniors Week program. The launch event returns to Launceston this year, being held exactly a week before the official start of Seniors Week activities on 10 October. This year’s venue is the bright and airy Tamar Room at the popular Tailrace Centre in Riverside, featuring ample free parking and level access to the building and facilities – and great views! All are welcome to attend this free event, which kicks off informally at 10:30am with tea, coffee and conversation before the start of formal activities 11:00am. We will hear brief addresses from COTA CEO Sue Leitch and other guests including a speaker from the Migrant Resource Centre in Launceston, which has collaborated with COTA in the planning of the official launch performances.
The Migrant Resource Centre will share the great work they do in helping people from other countries integrate into the local communities and will also tell us about the development and production of a special short film made by several members of the local migrant community about their elders. A jazz ensemble from the acclaimed Australian Army Band Tasmania will play for guests on arrival and again after official proceedings. During the launch ceremony we will be entertained by special performances from some extremely talented youth artists from humanitarian backgrounds ahead of the screening of the trailer for the short film. Then it’s more conversations and more morning tea! To assist with catering and general planning, RSVPs are preferred. Contact admin@cotatas.org. au or call 6231 3265 and leave a message if unanswered. See you there!
Seniors Week 2016 5
TasNetworks is committed to providing a reliable power supply 24 hours a day, however, unplanned events can cause the power to go out. It is important you take some time to learn about power outage safety and preparation. Unplanned events include things beyond our control, such as strong winds causing powerlines to clash, trees falling or lightning striking powerlines, electrical faults, bushfires and car accidents. Whatever the cause, TasNetworks works to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. While we do our best to limit the time the power is out, in some cases – particularly in emergencies, such as severe storms and bushfires – power outages can last several days. We understand having no power is frustrating and inconvenient, but with a little planning, you and your family will be well prepared if you do lose power. This is particularly important for Tasmanians who may have limited mobility, impaired vision or health problems that increase their reliance on an uninterrupted power supply. Preparing for a power outage starts long before it happens. Here are a few steps you can take today, to prepare for a power outage in the future: • Develop a preparedness plan and share it with your family and/or close friends. Be sure everyone knows what to expect and what to do if the power is out for a prolonged period. • Make a list of local emergency contact numbers, including 13 2004 for reporting a power outage, or fallen powerlines to TasNetworks. • Prepare an emergency kit and store it in an easily accessible location. Check regularly to make sure the kit is well stocked and all equipment is in good working order. Items could include: – A battery-operated radio – A battery-operated torch (do not use candles as they can increase the risk of fire) – Fully charged mobile phone with important contact numbers stored – Non-perishable food, water, utensils and a can opener – If you use electricity for heating, include some extra blankets and clothing – A first aid kit and any medications essential to you and your family’s health.
6 Seniors Week 2016
Stay safe during power outages Good planning and preparation before a power outage occurs is critical to your safety and comfort. An important part of this is understanding how to keep safe during a power outage. To help, we’ve put together a list of things to keep top of mind when the power goes out: • Always stay well clear of fallen powerlines, they may be live. Report fallen powerlines to 13 2004. • If you experience dimmed or flickering lights, turn off and unplug non-essential appliances. Do not touch your switchboard or anything metallic (including taps) and call the TasNetworks Service Centre on 13 2004 (using a mobile phone only). • Check your CablePI – when it is working correctly it will show a solid green light. An alarm or flashing amber light indicates a problem. • Disconnect or turn off all appliances such as chargers, TVs, computers, laptops, modem/routers or any appliance that will turn on automatically when power is restored. If several appliances start up at once, they may overload electrical circuits. • Use a portable generator with extreme caution. Always use it in a well-ventilated area and connect appliances directly to the generator. Keep the generator dry and do not use in wet conditions. • Stay informed by checking the TasNetworks website, following TasNetworks on Twitter and Facebook, listening to your local ABC radio station or calling TasNetworks on 13 2004. You can help to keep our community safe by sharing this information with your family and friends. For more outage safety and preparation tips visit

Have your say... Get involved in Tasmania’s Active Ageing Plan
What would you like to see for older Tasmanians over the coming years? COTA are currently working with the Tasmanian Government to develop Tasmania’s Active Ageing Plan. We want to hear from you to help us build opportunities that will lead to healthy, active and connected lives for older Tasmanians.
What do we already know? In 2012 Tasmanians identified the following priorities as the most important to them as they age: • health and wellbeing • access to facilities and services • social connections, family and friendships • transport • housing and home maintenance ‘Facing the Future’ – a Baseline Profile on Older Tasmanians, COTA 2013
The Active Ageing Plan will acknowledge that Tasmanians retain both their diversity and aspirations as they age. By the year 2020, one in four Tasmanians will be older than 65 years; by 2030 this will be one in five. ‘Facing the Future’ – a Baseline Profile on Older Tasmanians, COTA 2013
By exploring ways in which older people can continue to contribute to the rich diversity of Tasmanian life, the Active Ageing Plan will build communities that support and benefit older people in ways that benefit Tasmanians of all ages. In 2011, 45% of Tasmanians aged 65 and over worked over 30 hours a week – a third of these people worked more than 45 hours a week. ‘Facing the Future’ – a Baseline Profile on Older Tasmanians, COTA 2013
8 Seniors Week 2016
Older Tasmanians contribute their skills and knowledge to the economic wellbeing of Tasmania, actively contributing to our community through paid and unpaid work. • 44% of Tasmanians between the ages of 65 and 74 years have undertaken voluntary work. • 30% have cared for an aged person or a person with a disability. ‘Facing the Future’ – a Baseline Profile on Older Tasmanians, COTA 2013
Older Tasmanians contribute great value both to other Tasmanians and our businesses. COTA acknowledges funding of $125,000 from the Tasmanian Government to develop the Active Ageing Plan, in partnership with the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
We invite your input into Tasmania’s Active Ageing Plan: • come along to a consultation • call our office to find out when we are holding one near you • go to our website; or • call us (COTA TAS) on (03) 6231 3265

PUTTING YOU AT THE CENTRE OF EVERYTHING WE DO TasNetworks is proud to be supporting Seniors Week in Tasmania and celebrating the important contribution our seniors make to our community. Tasmanian seniors will be aware that the electricity industry has played an important role economically and socially in Tasmania, and has seen a number of significant changes in its history. In 2014 this included the creation of TasNetworks, as a result of the merger between Aurora’s distribution network and Transend’s transmission network. TasNetworks is Tasmania’s electricity network service provider, supplying power from generation sources to homes and businesses, through a network of towers, substations and powerlines. This includes
One of the most engaged and enthusiastic supporters of the annual Seniors Week activities program is Tasmania’s LINC network, which is a part of the State Government’s Department of Education. LINC services are available from 68 locations around the state, providing the Tasmanian community with access to a range of educational and community services delivered by LINCs, branch libraries, Online Access Centres and the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office (TAHO).
the ownership and operation of the poles and wires that deliver electricity to more than 280,000 Tasmanians. With network costs making up about 60 per cent of the average Tasmanian electricity bill, TasNetworks has an important role to play in ensuring we maintain downward pressure on electricity prices, whilst delivering a safe and reliable service. Sustainable and predicable electricity prices are important to our customers and that’s why they’re important to TasNetworks. Our aim is to make our customers central to everything we do, and we are in the process of changing and transforming our business to achieve this goal. Our vision is to be ‘trusted by our customers to deliver today
and create a better tomorrow’, and our ambition is for our business to provide a better future for all of our customers, and the community. With care, collaboration, innovation and hard work, we believe we can create value for our customers and value for Tasmania as a whole. Just as the energy we provide impacts homes and businesses across Tasmania, the efforts of our senior community power a positive and socially-cohesive community. I trust that you will enjoy the opportunity to participate in Seniors Week, as we come together to celebrate the valuable contributions of older people. Lance Balcombe Chief Executive Officer TasNetworks

Army Band a fitting finale There’s nothing like the sound of a full military band to arouse the senses and get the feet tapping. Thanks to longtime Seniors Week sponsor The Senior newspaper, a limited number of older Tasmanians will enjoy this experience when they attend a special free concert by the acclaimed Australian Army BandTasmania. This special Seniors Week concert will be held at the Wrest Point Hotel’s iconic Showroom from 2pm on Sunday 16 October.
It will be a case of first in bestdressed for the 300 free seats in the Showroom, where guests will enjoy an hour’s concert of classic and popular tunes followed by an afternoon tea provided by The Senior. This concert will be the last major event of Seniors Week 2016 and a fitting way to celebrate the end of the popular annual program. The event is free but bookings are essential at http://australian-armyband-tas-free-concert.eventbrite. com.au or call COTA Tasmania on 6231 3265.

After 100 years Betty is still LEARNING
“they don’t know what they are missing; it’s such fun and makes me think.”
Some might think that after 100 years of life, there would be not much left to learn about things. Not so, for spritely and vivacious centenarian Betty Smith who achieved her magic milestone back in July. Betty loves learning about new things and different trends and regularly attends School for Seniors and U3A to increase her knowledge. “I like science and learning new things and going to these classes makes me use my brain” says Betty, who wryly says she could sometimes teach the teachers a thing or two, especially about health and ageing...! Modern digital communication devices play a large role in Betty’s life and she strongly credits them with helping her keep her mentally active, “even though they can be time wasters.” When COTA visited Betty was playing a card game on her computer which she also uses to do her internet and other tasks.
22 Seniors Week 2016 • daily planner (south)
“The card game has got hundreds of combinations and it’s never the same so it really tests me and makes me use my brain – and that’s good!” She has mostly daily text conversations on her mobile phone with her children and grandchildren – “when I don’t forget to recharge it when I’m shopping” – and relaxes in her comfy chair with her Samsung tablet (device not drug!) to chat and share photos with her family, locally and around the world. She laments the fact that the majority of her friends aren’t interested in using social media – “they don’t know what they are missing; it’s such fun and makes me think.” Asked her secret to a long life, Betty cheekily said: “if I told you it would not be a secret!” Then said that she believes her longevity is probably due to thinking positive, by using her brain as much as she can, and coming from good Lancastrian stock! Go Betty. See you on Facebook...

About COTA Tasmania… COTA is the lead organisation in Tasmania for older people; for the issues that they may be facing, and for celebrating their successes. We are passionate about the rights of older people and speak regularly with all levels of government and a broad sector of the business and community sectors, and of course, older people. We’re an independent not-forprofit incorporated body with a volunteer board of directors who meet regularly. The Board has several sub-committees providing specialist advice. We also have a Policy Council looking at social policy that affects older people. COTA Tas has a small staff; a fulltime Chief Executive and several part-time project officers who have responsibility for delivering a range of activities and benefits to older people, ranging from information about age care reforms, elder abuse, active ageing, and information sessions for older people. We also provide policy feedback on a variety of subjects such as health reform, transport, retirement incomes and workforce issues for older workers. One of our major projects is of course Seniors Week, the very popular annual activities program devised by the State Government 19 years ago, which has been organised by COTA Tas for the past six years. While Seniors Week is our highest profile project, COTA Tas is very engaged in several other areas of seniors’ welfare.
30 Seniors Week 2016
We are active older people’s advocates, participating in committees and forums, liaising with sector peak bodies and actively lobbying local, state and federal governments in regard to policies and issues affecting older people such as energy costs, affordable housing, accessible transport, information access, cyber security, elder abuse, information needs and more. Another highly regarded COTA Tas activity is our Peer Education program; a series of education and information sessions delivered, as their name suggests, by the peers of older people. These personable presenters are trained by experts in the respective subjects and then present the sessions in a variety of convenient and accessible locations. COTA Tasmania is currently working with the Tasmanian Government to develop Tasmania’s Active Ageing Plan. We want to hear from you to help us build opportunities to lead healthy, active and connected lives for older Tasmanians. See page 24 for more information on how you can have input. facebook.com/COTATas @COTATas
You can help us to speak out for older Tasmanians! COTA is an independent, not-for-profit body that relies on income from various government and private sources for its sustained operations. You can help COTA Tasmania to continue our advocacy and education activities to assist Tasmanian seniors enjoy a high quality of life. You can become a COTA volunteer or alternatively, make a tax deductible donation. For more information visit our website www.cotatas.org.au, email admin@cotatas.org.au or call us on 6231 3265.
